Captain Craptastic

By Kev Kendall  : 3/4/07
I'm sorry, but I can hold back no longer. Having just read the article by Pete North on Simon Davies, it rang home so true, that it made me smile that someone finally seemed to think as I did, although I actually rank Kilbane alongside him, because (his first season aside, when he was probably our best player — imagine that!) we may as well have played with 10 men the frequency in which Killa could not, or aparently would not try and take on the full back.

But it is Neither of our former international midfield flops I am complaining about today. No, it is our current international midfield flop, the one who has tarnished the honour of being Everton Captain. I am talking of course about Phil "What a Pro" Neville.

Neville is absolute, complete and utter SHITE! Davies and Kilbane where both hillarious in there own way, each of them a true Royal blue waste of space, but at least everyone, including the Media, seemed to recognise that. Neville on the other hand, somehow manages to be awful, and get plaudits at the same time. Oh the work he gets through, he does the thankless, ugly jobs for the team, he makes his pressence felt, he leads by example... Nonesense!!!

He wastes the ball, he cannot pass/cross (well, 1 in every 10, he must have learned that from Beckham), he insists on playing hospital passes or chipping the ball forward head height, but with no power or pace to beat the last defender, and just feeble enough that AJ and Vaughan have to come back to retrieve it. He can't tackle (If he had never played for England or Man Utd, he would have the worst disciplinary record in the prem, he gets away with things Mark Hughes got booked for).

As for covering the pitch, he was supposed to be in a deffensive midfield role yesterday, but whenever Cars went for the 1st ball, Neville just watched instead of making the 2nd challenge, leaving Cars to look bad even tho his selfless contributions in cleaning up Pips mess made it look like Nevilles 1st, poorly timed challenge was priceless. He's not going to create anything like Manny or Tim, so therefore, he should be the Legs, but he wasn't.

He is trully embarrassing, especially in midfield, but Hibbo is a better right-back and Davey WILL find space for him. Yesterday, Manny was out, so Hibbo came in as the next fit player and Neville was moved in to the middle (ala spurs at home. If da Silva, who was on the bench that night, isn't good enough to make a nuisance of himself to the level Neville supposedly does, then he must trully be worthless... while I'm at it, where was Nevilles challenge on Jenas as he strolled to the edge of our box? Defensive midfielder? LOL!!

Hibbo played really well last night, IMO, especially having not played too often recently, so he should keep his place, which means come friday, if Manny is fit, it won't be our least effective player (Neville) making way, it will probably be Ossie. Failing that it will be Vaughany and we'll be back to 451. I cant wait if we sign Manny, and as reported, Barton, because my team would not include Neville:

           Howard
Hibbert Yobo Lescott Valente
          Barton
 Fernandes Cahill Arteta
      Johnson Nugent
Don't bank on it though. Pip has charmed everyone, and he will be a fixture in our side until he is injured or sold — just like Davies and Killa where before. Still, we could still have the 3 of them playing together. Dear God...

Responses:

Thank God someone has said that! I went to the Villa game and, my God, he was awful. Everything good Moyes does with the midfield is ruined by Neville's inability to be good at anything remotely linked to football. He fouls, hoofs the ball away and doesn't contribute towards anything in attack. All in all the worst captain we have had in a long long long time! Shouldn't the captain be someone like Joey Yobo who is an absolute god-send at the moment for our defence?

While I don't share David Moyes's faith in his midfield abilities, I can't say labeling him "Captain Craptastic" and describing him as "absolute shite" is all that constructive. Given the choice, I wouldn't have two creatively limited, defensively-minded central midfielders — Neville and Carsley — in the same team but that speaks more to the lack of depth of talent in the squad than anything else. And, while Hibbert may be a better right back in the defensive side of that role, Neville is far better going forward and at providing ammunition from the flanks when he does so, overall, I'd pick him over Tony every time.
