Match Summary

Everton's 100% pre-season record came to an end in Wolfsburg this afternoon with a 2-0 defeat and a decent run-out against the strongest side they've faced thus far. Mario Mandzukic scored a fairly soft goal early on before Tim Howard saved a penalty from Edin Dzeko as Steve McClaren's side began impressively.

A fortuitous second from Karim Ziani that sailed over Tim Howard from 40 yards doubled their advantage and though the Blues were better in a second half disrupted by constant substutions, not much worked and they failed to make a breakthrough.

Though little more can be read into the result that the six wins that preceded it, the defeat and the flat performance that accompanied it will have provided a small check on any belief that this Everton side is the finished article, with question marks lingering over the right side of the team.
