Season › 2024-25 › News The Rumour Mill The Friedkin Group may turn to Frank Lampard at AS Roma Michael Kenrick | 04/11/2024 33comments | Jump to last There are suggestions that Frank Lampard is among those being considered by The Friedkin Group to replace AS Roma coach Ivan Juric after another loss suffered at the weekend. TFG have not had a smooth ride during their time in charge of the Serie A side who currently sit in 11th place with 13 points from their first 11 games, with scrutiny intensifying on the man brought in just weeks ago. This follows hostility from the fans when TFG sacked club legend Daniele de Rossi after just a handful of games at the start of this season. Asked about conceding 8 goals in consecutive away games (a 5-1 defeat at Fiorentina and a 3-2 defeat a Hellas Verona), Juric admitted: Article continues below video content “It was embarrassing in Florence and it has nothing to do with tonight’s game [in Verona]. It was a complete disaster and I accepted it as just that. Since that day, there’s been a brilliant reaction. Even before that game, we’d been working well, but we have been making mistakes that are hard to explain. The first goal is an example and the second is a foul… “We did score twice and carve out plenty of chances plus a series of sustained attacks. We’re paying the price. “Sometimes, I think football is just like that. We have to stay clear-headed, see what we’re doing and raise our level of focus. Having said that, it’s not just about focus because these mistakes are too big.” Meanwhile, the takeover of Everton by The Friedkin Group is believed to be progressing toward approval from the Premier League, FA and Financial Conduct Authority. Disclaimer () Paul Hewitt 1 Posted 04/11/2024 at 12:07:23 Well if this is true, it doesn't give me much confidence in them taking over us. Kevin Molloy 2 Posted 04/11/2024 at 12:08:21 In terms of red flags, they don't get no bigger. Does this club ever get any good news? Are our new owners really so utterly clueless? If they appoint Lampard, I think we should all just go and find something else to do at the weekend. Fred Quick 3 Posted 04/11/2024 at 12:08:55 Paul @1,It could be worse, mate, they might decide to bring Frank back to Goodison, just in time to play all the heavy hitters in December. John Raftery 4 Posted 04/11/2024 at 13:47:06 Is this a wind-up? Joe McMahon 5 Posted 04/11/2024 at 13:54:53 Really? It's being seduced by the big name again. Gawd I hope this isn't some kind of glance into the new Everton owner's mindset. Jim Bennings 6 Posted 04/11/2024 at 14:13:24 When I first saw this headline I thought they were lining him up for a return to Everton… haha!I hope they aren't more of the same in terms of Moshiri, just appointing "names".I'd love to see us go down the road of a Bournemouth or Brighton, find me a positive up and coming manager that wants to develop a team.I get sick of the tired old Everton philosophical of never breaking the fashion of needing a big Number 9 and no other style will be contemplated. It's hardly brought much success in the modern era. Michael Kenrick 7 Posted 04/11/2024 at 14:47:52 Dead right, Jim! I know I bitch a lot about the headlines but this one from the Echo is despicable:Friedkin Group 'considering' Frank Lampard appointment as Everton takeover wait continuesNo mention of Roma, so of course you assume they mean Everton. Peter Hodgson 8 Posted 04/11/2024 at 15:32:43 Michael @ 7I truly hope you are miles wrong with your thoughts because they (TFG) most certainly would be starting off on the wrong foot at Everton then. I wouldn't wish it on Roma either as it would show one big mistake after another, wouldn't it?If any of this had a scintilla of truth from the Red Echo, my thoughts about them would take a nosedive immediately. It has got to be a wind up or is it just clickbait? Paul Hewitt 9 Posted 04/11/2024 at 15:54:54 Frying pan and fire come to mind. Peter Hodgson 10 Posted 04/11/2024 at 16:08:51 What I wrote @8 may be open to misinterpretation so I think I should clarify it. My comments were all about TFG. When I referred to The Red Echo I wasn't commenting on them being a truthful, responsible or readable rag. No. I think they are absolute rubbish whose credibility is already zero so therefore can't take a nosedive. I apologise if anyone got the wrong impression. Rob Halligan 11 Posted 04/11/2024 at 16:11:00 The key word here is 'may'! They may turn to Lampard for the Roma position. It's not a given, and probably all bullshit. Geoff Lambert 12 Posted 04/11/2024 at 16:44:18 That may just be correct, Rob. Peter Hodgson 13 Posted 04/11/2024 at 16:59:58 Rob @11,It makes no difference If what The Echo says is true. The bullshit worrying thing is that they are considering Lampard in the first place. Are they nuts? Stu Darlington 14 Posted 04/11/2024 at 17:12:31 God help Roma! And God help Everton if this is an indication of TFG's tactical nouse! Fred Quick 15 Posted 04/11/2024 at 17:23:28 Couldn't TFG just swap the current Roma boss with Everton's current boss? It would be interesting to see how that would pan out. I bet Sean doesn't have a passport. Paul Kernot 16 Posted 04/11/2024 at 19:55:23 He made it north of Watford, Fred, so he must have a passport. Tony Abrahams 17 Posted 04/11/2024 at 19:57:45 The report I have just read says they are considering Lampard, because he's been recommended by people close to Everton. Christine Foster 18 Posted 04/11/2024 at 20:41:51 Tony, It was the tea lady.. Jerome Shields 19 Posted 05/11/2024 at 08:26:17 No way. Tony Abrahams 20 Posted 05/11/2024 at 08:38:23 Those days have gone for good, unfortunately, Christine. I remember the old training ground at Bellefield, and getting given cheese on toast from the tea lady who was one of my mate's mother. But when I went into Finch Farm last season, it had all changed and the food wouldn't have been out of place in a seven-star hotel. I wasn't that hungry but I ended up having some sea bass and salad, and it was definitely better than anything I've ever encountered in the five-star hotels I've been fortunate enough to stay in. But I preferred the old Bellefield if I'm being honest, because everyone seemed a lot closer in those days.Talking about hotels has just reminded me of one of Brian Clough's team talks. Playing at Bramhall Lane one night, the changing rooms were spotlessly clean and spacious, and Clough, who I'm sure had been on the whisky, started rambling. "Look at this here, it's like a five-star hotel, so get out there tonight and play like a fuckin five-star hotel!" It's not rocket science, is it? And that man was rightly called a footballing genius for his incredible achievements. Nigel Scowen 21 Posted 05/11/2024 at 08:43:35 Tony @17,Would be good if we were able to find out who those people close to Everton are, Tony, so we could move them further away. Tony Abrahams 22 Posted 05/11/2024 at 08:53:55 Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, Nigel. But if this story is even remotely true, then whoever is advising Friedkin surely won't be around for long! Danny O'Neill 23 Posted 05/11/2024 at 09:04:51 Sea bass, Tony. When I go out to Anzio, where I used to live, I always had that. As well as a Spaghetti con Vongoli (clams). Not at the same time!!!I appreciate that times and diets have changed, with the advent of Sports Science, but I just wonder if the pampering inside the gates of Finch Farm goes too far. Can't beat a poached or scrambled eggs for a pre-match meal. Maybe I'm getting old!!! James Marshall 24 Posted 05/11/2024 at 09:19:25 11th after 11 games – yes please! It's a low bar, but that'd be progress for us. Tony Abrahams 25 Posted 05/11/2024 at 11:01:58 That reminds me of the soup I had in one of those five-star hotels, Danny. I thought I was getting a soup with lamb in it but it tasted dead fishy. I had been on the ale and was laughing saying "It's a good job I like fish cos this definitely isn't lamb." And then the next day I heard a Mexican shouting "clam", and then it all made sense.I don't know about the players' prematch meal, but it feels like half the Goodison crowd are on sleeping tablets, that's how bad it has become watching us recently. Trevor Powell 26 Posted 05/11/2024 at 12:23:37 Like the comment about "This follows hostility from the fans when TFG sacked club legend Daniele de Rossi"If that defence did not work for de Rossi, what hope has Sean Dyche got?????? John Graham 27 Posted 05/11/2024 at 15:36:17 Lampard is just a name the papers like to put up for any management job which is available or might become available. Guess his agent has a few contacts and wants to try to keep his name current. Comes across as a decent guy, but doubt that he will ever be a good manager. Once our takeover goes through I can't see Dyche lasting too long unless a miracle has happened and we are in the top half of the table. Not too sure if there are any decent managers out there who would be interested in coming to us, but we do need to be looking for a more positive-minded coach who will actually get a team and style on the pitch to make everyone look forward to a match day and not dread it every week.Maybe some of our more knowledgeable contributors can start putting some names forward so we can all enjoy checking them out and put together our wish list. Peter Moore 28 Posted 05/11/2024 at 18:10:17 To my eye, when Dyche first came in, at start of February, it took time for him to know the squad. Then, after his first full pre-season with the squad, he started the season with a front-foot, possession-based, multi-chance creation comparatively expansive game plan! We battered teams in terms of chances and possession but kept losing to late sucker-punch soft goals. Had the footballing gods smiled on us and we had Viktor Gyökeres up front instead of our goal-shy forwards, we would perhaps be loving the style and results.I think Dyche concluded, rightly, we lack the quality to play that way successfully and so, rather than look pretty and get relegated, we needed to be hard to beat and grind out games.Allardyce got us to 8th come May in his season. Pretty ain't effective unless you have the quality we don't have. In future, post-takeover, we can start to progress in every way. Until then, I believe Sean Dyche is truly prefect for us. All we need to do is keep faith, but I realise that most fans now are very happy to knife the leader and think the grass is greener with a newbie Everton manager in this, our final season at Goodison Park. I think that is crazy and flawed thinking. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course. John Raftery 29 Posted 05/11/2024 at 20:52:11 Peter (28), I agree. In our situation, with several players injured, several others feeling their way into the league, and others struggling for form, sacking the manager at this stage will probably make things worse. There is certainly no guarantee a new manager will improve matters. The clarion cries for Potter can be heard but nothing in his CV suggests he is suited to what is a fire-fighting job. I think results will improve as the season progresses. Unlike some, I do not believe December will be a write-off. Indeed it may be just what the players and the fans need. Steve Shave 30 Posted 07/11/2024 at 05:47:13 Surely this is just nonsense. Lampard remains in my eyes the biggest fraud to have managed us. He looked lost despite having a really expensively assembled coaching staff. I liked him as a person and he was a good speaker for the club but he was clueless as he was in all the teams he's managed. I can't see what on earth would qualify him to manage Roma. John Pickles 31 Posted 07/11/2024 at 09:41:49 He's not number 1 on their list, he's behind Koeman and Mike Walker. Peter Moore 32 Posted 07/11/2024 at 21:54:04 The Straq as player-manager is an outside bet. Trevor Powell 33 Posted 08/11/2024 at 12:24:48 Typical slack and easy journalism! Years ago, I was invited to a seminar on how to deal with the press. The main thing that came out was that journalists and editors are lazy bastards who look for the easiest way to fill up column inches!
