Mateusz Hewelt 41
Goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt joined Everton as a first-year scholar in
the summer of 2013.
Polish-born, the youngster had previously
played in the Republic of Ireland for Stella Maris and Shelbourne FC and
was looking to secure Irish citizenship.
Hewelt was a regular for the Under-18s in 2014-15, while also
finishing the campaign in goal for the Under-21s and traveling as
back-up with the senior squad. On 3 July 2015, he signed his
first professional contract, keeping him at the Club until June 2017.
He played in goal for most of the Under-21 games in 2015-16, edging out Jindrich Stanek, who would be released at the end of the season. But the arrival of Marteen Stekelenburg would ensure that he had no chancre of getting anywhere near the first team, despite going to Austria with them for pre-season training in July 2016.
Hewelt was called up to the subs bench for a handful of senior games in the Premier League during December 2016 when Stekelenburg was out injured. He would go on to rack up a decent number of clean sheets for the U23s in their successful bid to win Premier League 2 in 2017, and on the strength of that, his contract was extended for another two years..
But he saw less action for the U23s the following season, suffering an injury that would keep him out for 2 months, with competition from Louis Gray and Joe Hilton reducing his opportunities. And despite getting one senior game on the subs bench, in Cyprus against Apollon Limassol, with Stekelenburg being out for the rest of the season, Joel Robles was getting the nod as understudy for Jordan Pickford.
Confirmation that Mateusz Hewelt had peaked in his time at Everton came when Marco Silva and Marcel Brands ditched Robles but brought in young Joao Virginia from Arsenal as the official third choice senior goalkeeper despite his tender age of 18.
Hewelt would struggle to get U23 games for the rest of surely his final season as an Everton player as he vied with Joe Hilton and Virginia for the goalkeeper's spot in David Unsworth's double-winning Under-23s side. But both he and Joe Hilton wold lose out, being released at the end of the season as Everton trimmed their bloated Under-23 numbers.
