Everton completed the signing of young goalkeeper Chris Renshaw from Oldham Athletic in June 2016. After joining the Latics at the age of 11, Renshaw found himself on the League One side's first-team bench on occasion in 2014-15.
The 18-year-old had apparently been attracting attention from a number of bigger clubs but joined Everton on a 3-year deal. The deal could involve a new arrangement between the two clubs whereby Oldham would have an option to loan players from the Blues' Academy and U21s/U23s side.
“I’m really excited for the challenge,” he said. "I know about the record of how many players Everton have brought through the Academy. That interested me a lot because there seems to be a serious pathway to the first team.
"Every time we played friendlies at Everton, I always used to say the training ground and facilities would make this an amazing club to be at.
"This is a step up but I’m looking forward to it. For me, this year is a development stage, so it’s about trying to get that regular football in the Under-21s.”
Renshaw replaced recently released Polish stopper Jindrich Stanek after 2½ years with the club. He was selected for most of the U-18s matches in his first season. But for the Under-23s, he would spend a lot of the next two seasons bench-stitting as understudy to Mateusz Hewelt, getting to play in just two games at the higher level.
Renshaw did not play a single game for Everton U23s in 2018-19 and it was announced at the end of the season that he had been released.
