 April 2001

Apr 30:  Sporting Life writer Chris Hutcheon considers the Mersey Blues: why Everton consistently under-perform.  Nothing new, but it represents a balanced summary of the many factors behind Everton's continuing low prospects in the Premiership.

Apr 29:  The passing of a true Everton Servant Gordon Watson is marked today by Steve Milne, who remembers one of the Club's unsung heroes.

Apr 28:  Safe!  In a nailbiting rollercoaster against Bradford City, Niclas Alexandersson scored the crucial winner midway through the 2nd half after Duncan Ferguson had equalised Andy Myers' 3rd minute opener.  However, hero of the hour was Paul Gerrard who saved Robbie Blake's penalty and did enough to force Benito Carbone to blast a second spot kick over the bar!  Bradford are now relegated.

Apr 28 - Everton U-17s were unable to progress to the next stage of the playoffs despite beating Sheff Wed 4-0; Newcastle head the mini-group. The U-19s finished their league program as Group Leaders with a weak 0-0 draw against Man Utd.

Apr 27: Everton are wisely maintaining Season Ticket Prices season-ticket prices at their current levels next season, and introducing better deals for kids and OAPs.  However, the insulting "Premium Pricing" remains  – albeit reduced from six games to two.

Apr 26:  Everton have confirmed that Walter Smith has had talks with Ghanaian midfielder Alex Nyarko for the first time since the events of the Arsenal game last weekend.  Nyarko disappeared for 5 days but now has permission to spend some time to ponder his future, which will likely involve football, just not at Everton.

Apr 26 - Everton fan Stephen Price has been banned from attending matches for three years, and fined £170 plus costs by a North London magistrate for invading the sanctity of the Highbury playing area and confronting Alex Nyarko.

Apr 25 - Abel Xavier has been taken straight to hospital after suffering from a bad ankle injury in the Portugal v France International Friendly.

Apr 24 - After announcing that he is quitting football, Alex Nyarko has disappeared, missing training for the third time. Everton are trying to track him down.

Apr 23 - Having been criticised by the Blue two-thirds of Merseyside for appearing to be working against the Kings Dock bid, the Liverpool Echo has now come out in public support of the club's efforts, urging the people of Liverpool to forget footballing loyalties.

Apr 23 - Viewpoint: To Condone or Condemn? Everton are back in the headlines for negative reasons after a frustrated supporter jumped the barrier and confronted Alex Nyarko, offering to swap shirts during the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal

Apr 23 - Paul Gascoigne had to be removed from the action after 24 minutes of his comeback game in Everton Reserves' 1-1 draw with title rivals Sunderland when he felt a twinge in his thigh.

Apr 23 - After announcing that he is quitting football, Alex Nyarko has disappeared, missing training twice. Everton are trying to track him down.

Apr 22 -  Colm Kavanagh can't wait for the season to end.  Uncertainty remains as Walter Smith's incredibly negative tactics see Everton trounced yet again, setting things up for a dreaded "must-win" fixture against Bradford City.

Apr 21 - Ljungberg gave Arsenal the lead but within 2 mins Everton were level thanks to Kevin Campbell's equaliser.  However, a second-half collapse with goals by Grimandi, Wiltord, and Henry – not to mention Xavier's sending off – left the Blues with nothing, except the numbing fear of relegation... And a bizarre incident with fan Stephen Price during the Arsenal game has led Alex Nyarko to say he is quitting football!  Listen to Nyarko's final words...

Apr 21 - Everton U-19s sealed first place in the FA Youth Academy Group, winning 1-0 at Newcastle. No report yet.  The U-17s also won at Aston Villa in their second playoff match.

Apr 16 - A special football match between players from the ToffeeWeb Forum and Red All Over The Land (a Liverpool FC Website) was played this morning – on the day after the 12th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.  The ToffeeWeb team lost 2-1 after leading for most of the match, missing a penalty, and having a clear goal disallowed in a goalmouth scramble.  Match Report at icLiverpool

Apr 14: Everton went down 2-1 to the customary defeat at Aston Villa when Ian Taylor headed the winner 9 minutes from time after a David Unsworth wonder goal had earlier cancelled out Dion Dublin's opener after 25 seconds.  The Blues go into Monday's derby still not clear of relegation danger.

Apr 11 - Brian Viner, a BlueBelly writing for The Independent, meets Richard Gough, the 39 year-old veteran who may or may not be leaving Goodison in the summer.  Worse, it looks doubtful that he will be donning the armour for Monday's derby showdown.
