 January 2001

Jan 31:  Just a point earned from a vital 'six-pointer' against fellow strugglers Middlesbrough who are on a good run.  Goals from Naysmith and Tal allowed Everton to steal a draw from the jaws of defeat after twice going behind.

Jan 30:  In this Daily Mail piece at SoccerNet, Kevin Campbell is the latest player to vent to the press about the seriousness of Everton's current plight.

Jan 29:  Torino centre back Djibrial Diawara has arrived at Bellefield for a three day trial with Everton.

Jan 28:  Mark Pembridge will miss the home match with Leicester after picking up his 5th yellow card yesterday.

Jan 27:  Everton started brightly in this rare FA Cup 4th Round derby but buckled as soon as Tranmere scored, eventually giving up three goals – their second worst home FA Cup defeat to lower league opposition ever.

Jan 26:  Ian Ross – moonlighting from his new job as Everton Communications Manager – provides a comprehensive preview of the Tranmere game in The Guardian.

Jan 25:  Manchester City manager Joe Royle has swooped to sign veteran ex-Everton and Rangers winger Andrei Kanchelskis on loan!

Jan 24:  Walter Smith took very little time to decide that Argentinean defender Julian Maidana didn't cut the mustard; the trialist has been sent packing after just 2 days at Bellefield.

Jan 23:  Tonight's reserve game against Blackburn Rovers at Widnes has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Jan 22:  Not fazed by the culture shock of life in Liverpool, the little Yank has plenty of good things to say about his Everton experience in this Soccer America interview.

Jan 22:  More unbelievable injury news hits Everton as it was determined that Paul Gascoigne will need another operation – to sort out a bizarre repeat of the same thigh/groin injury!

Jan 21:  The joy of Coventry is tempered by more bad news of injuries for Alexandersson and Cleland – who may both be out for "a few weeks".

Jan 20:  For once, a bright start by Everton results in three goals after just half an hour at Coventry.  Solid resistance kept Coventry at bay in the second half until they got a late penalty.

Jan 19:  Everton will also give a trial to Canadian international Kevin McKenna next week.

Jan 18:  Everton are to take Argentine defender and Man City/Blackburn reject Julian Maidana on trial for a week from Monday.

Jan 17:  Peter Clarke, the highly rated young defender who has so far been overlooked through the injury crisis, has agreed a new 3-yr contract with Everton.

Jan 17:  Today marks the deadline for detailed submissions (and models) from parties with proposed schemes for developing the Kings Dock site.  Schemes will be on display in the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, from next Monday.

Jan 17:  Niclas Alexandersson is now a major doubt for the Coventry game, where new records are expected to be set for Everton Squad players missing due to injury, illness and suspension.

Jan 17:  Liverpool Magistrates Court has committed Danny Cadamarteri to trial in the Crown Court on a charge of assault.

Jan 16:  After coming to Goodison to talk to Walter Smith, Blackburn's Christian Dailly has signed for West Ham.

Jan 14:  Despite all the pre-trial hype, Dundee's Lee Wilkie has apparently rejected a one-month loan spell at Everton.

Jan 13:  David Weir is the latest addition to Everton's unrelenting injury crisis; he could be out for up to six weeks with a calf injury...

Jan 13:  David Weir was an early casualty against Spurs, going off injured after just 7 mins, as Everton made an encouraging start.  A number of good chances to score were thwarted, with Everton making lots of pressure in the second half, and Campbell hitting the post, but no goals.

Jan 12:  Gary Naysmith is the latest injury-list addition: a hamstring problem rules him out of the Spurs game.

Jan 11:  Big Dunc apparently broke a bone in his hand repelling invaders... although the Official Website says he has a hamstring injury... Ho hum.

Jan 11:  Steve Lomas has thankfully decided to stay with the Hammers after it turns out that all he wanted was a boost in his contract.

Jan 10:  Steve Lomas is deciding his future after talks with West Ham, Everton and Manchester City as 'Arry the Spiv looks to make another killing...

Jan 9:  Everton Reserves crashed out of the Liverpool Senior Cup, losing 2-3 to Marine.

Jan 9:  Gazza, Gough and Xavier have all recovered from their injuries and may be available for Saturday's Spurs match.

Jan 8:  Referee Rob Styles royal flush of yellow cards handed Everton a suspension whammy at Watford: Moore, Hughes and Gravesen will all be suspended for the match at Coventry.

Jan 8:  A burglar is in hospital after getting into a scuffle with Duncan Ferguson when two men broke into the Everton player's Rufford home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Jan 7:  This Sunday's News of the Screws anti-Everton diatribe has all the hallmarks of a scare-story manufactured from diverse snippets and inferences that are months if not years out of date.

Jan 6:  In the FA Cup 3rd Round, some bad defending allowed Watford to score after just 20 mins.... Hughes finally scored a screamer from a free kick after Page was red-carded.  Then, at the death, Steve Watson grabbed a rare, vital victory with his first goal for Everton – a glancing header off an Alexandersson cross!

Jan 6:  SoccerNet are reporting that Bill Kenwright will finance the Lomas deal out of his own pocket after Everton's bankers declined to extend the £20M overdraft to cover this transfer.

Jan 5:  Everton have made a bid to West Ham United for the services of Steve Lomas, who is now expected to choose between the Toffees and Manchester City.

Jan 4:  Everton's postponed match against Leeds United has been rearranged for Wednesday 7 February, Kick-off: 8 pm.

Jan 4:  Danny Cadamarteri's assault case was adjourned and he will now face a committal hearing on Jan 17.
