Everton 2 - 0 Liverpool

I actually got to Goodison Park a bit early, so took the opportunity to venture into St Luke’s and had a look around the Everton Heritage Society exhibition. I recommend it to all if you get the chance.

I grabbed some food and stood by the Holy Trinity statue, waiting for my nephew where we had agreed to meet. I got halfway through and then spotted a young lad wrapped in a sleeping bag sat on the corner of the Gwladys Street. He didn’t look in great shape, so I gave the rest to him. He was grateful and told me he was starving.

I had my middle brother’s season ticket, and we took our seats on the back row in the centre of the Upper Bullens, right behind the commentator gantry in front of us and could see Gary Neville, who looked pleased at the end.

Half-and-half scarfs. They bug me at the best of times. Why? And how could anyone wear scarf that has Liverpool on it? I’ll leave that one there.

The team were fantastic and worked themselves into the ground. They never gave in. Even at 2-0 and when they got the opportunity, they went for the third.

Godfrey was given a torrid time as they were targeting him and that flank frequently, but he stood up to the task, even if at times he got caught on the back foot. Inevitable when you are under that much pressure, but he coped well and had cover.

I don’t need to say much about Tarkowski and Branthwaite. They won just about everything thrown at them and commanded the box. Just about every corner and I don’t know how many times bodies flew in the way of the ball when Liverpool did threaten, but nothing was getting through. Jarrad was majestic and got his goal to put us on the way. I sometimes wish he would stop it as I’ve no doubt the hawks will be circling.

And when they did get through, Pickford was at his best to stop them.

Harrison had his best game for us in my opinion. He worked incredibly hard as did most of the team. Idrissa was Idrissa and I was actually a bit concerned when he was taken off. He is a very important player for us.

Dominic was brilliant, and that leap above the Liverpool defenders was magnificent. At the time, I didn’t know who it was and had to ask. I just saw a great leap to overpower the Liverpool defence and in it went. Pandemonium.

McNeil ran and ran. He was once again very hard-working. They all were. You can pick from any for Man of the Match. The best team performance this season in my opinion. But for me it has to go to Jordan Pickford, for those several crucial saves.

I don’t know what it sounded like to those watching on TV, but the atmosphere was electric. The person sat next to me commented that you wouldn’t even know there were Liverpool supporters in the stadium as we rarely heard them. Goodison is at its very best.

Despite my optimistic outlook, I spent a lot of the last 20 minutes clock-watching at the screen over by St Luke’s wondering if it was operating in a slow-motion time warp as it hardly seemed to be moving.

The only sour note of a great night was at half-time when we went to get a couple of bottles of Coke-Cola (yes, I needed sugar and energy!). A young lady was stood wearing a Liverpool shirt and took quite a bit of abuse. Totally unnecessary and we are better than that. Fair credit to the stewards for stepping in before I did to defuse the situation. I think they moved her into the Liverpool section.

So pleased for the team who have been fighting adversity, but more pleased for those supporters who haven’t given in and won’t. The challenge now is to treat every game like a derby and show the same levels of desire and commitment. We’re just about there. All the players can do is impact what is in front of them on the pitch. All we supporters can do is back them as we did last night. It’s a two-way relationship.

The scenes at the end were unbelievable. I don’t think many left the ground as Spirit of The Blues and Forever Everton rang out and we watched the players take the deserved plaudits before leaving the pitch.

Onto the Arkles. My nephew joined me. A few bitter Reds shouting off as we walked along Priory Road. The irony of the term, but they were not happy!! The Arkles was pretty much void of Kopites, which almost disappointed me. I think they must have all gone home.

My sister and cousin (both Everton) drove out to pick us up and drop me off in town for the late coach. She’s worked at Anfield and their offices opposite the Pier Head since they moved some of their operation, so knows all the short cuts. I think it might have been deliberate, but we drove past Bramley-Moore Dock.

The coach journey back was an epic as always, made worse by a crazy driver, who I was convinced was either under the influence or couldn’t drive. As we randomly drifted between lanes and nearly hit the back of a lorry, I thought he was going to put us in a ditch.

For very different reasons than Chelsea away, this is going to take a day or two to come down from. I’m still running on adrenalin.

Believe, Everton. Never ever stop believing. You didn’t last night. We are doing this.

Danny. Well said. We don't want that type of scum.

Yes, the RS do it to us. But we are better than that. What a result, and I guess 6 more points will secure us.

That's if Forest win all their remaining games, but our goal difference is better. My heart tells me we are safe though.

Great report as ever, Danny. Pity about the half-time incident. We don't need those types being Evertonians. Leave that sort of behaviour to other supporters.

A little bit of banter is one thing but needing stewards to step in is not good. Whoever the lady was, she now thinks were all morons. On behalf of decent Evertonians everywhere I apologise to her.

As for the game, it's good to finally get the "can't beat them at home" jinx out of the way.

I trust the players will not do "Everton that " come the weekend v Brentford. I wonder if Maupay will show his face. I know he can't play but his attitude to us whilst he has been on loan has been disgusting.

Danny, You were not far from me in the Upper Bullens, wish I would have seen you. What a game we played, bullying and antagonising the team who usually do that to their opponents. Instead, we were at them from the off, gave them leeway just before half-time but picked up the pace from the start of the second half and could have had a couple more goals to rub it in.

Being honest, Liverpool could have had a couple too but we deserved to win that game and Liverpool and their fans knew that in the last 10 minutes or so. In fact, I never came across any Red fans as I walked along Bullens Road at the end of the game, mind you that was a good few minutes after the game finished.

If we keep playing like that, we can win the last four games that's why I'm worried we might let Liverpool back into the title race if we beat Arsenal – no matter that we haven't won there for donkey's years: How long was it before we beat Liverpool at Goodison before last night?

Made up you witnessed that performance last night, Danny, and had a great night with some of your family.

It really annoys me to hear us giving away fans dog's abuse. I've sat in Anfield with my Everton scarf on and only got good banter, admittedly we lost.

Sven, actual name Mike, my brother-in-law who is a red season ticket holder was the first to send a congratulations message. Would be great for it to return to being the friendly derby.

Although I was in stitches when I heard ringing out "The city's all ours, fuck off back to Norway, the city's all ours". I might have to work out how to set my iPhone up so that plays when Sven calls.

"...but picked up the pace from the start of the second half"

Very noticeable was that, Dave – has driven me mad in just about every other game this season (and previously). We don't start playing 'til 55 or 60 minutes in, then immediately look like we need subs on!

Great stuff, Danny – see you Saturday for the next instalment of this loopy season!

I was nervous until the second went in, then I relaxed. They weren't up for it – they were well beaten and they knew it.

Difficult to pick a MotM – I was especially pleased with and for Dom. The back four were awesome, and “even” Young played a big part.

But for me, the difference to recent performances was Idrissa Gana Gueye. He was magnificent! UTFT

Super read again, Danny, as always. It was brilliant to beat them last night.

I've got family up from down South on Saturday, they are Brentford fans. I'm gonna take them to see the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock and will probably pop in to The Arkles on the way to the ground. COYB

Idrissa was tenacious, Mark.

Sorry we didn't catch up, Dave. Next one, so we can have a chat. I always enjoy our conversations.

Right, let's get these blue boys moving and push them over the line, starting this weekend.

I didn't expect a report from you today, Danny, so I sent you a private WhatsApp message.

I was and still am overjoyed for all Evertonians last night, but I was particularly delighted for you. You've been mocked by the cynics and doubting Thomases for your seemingly unrealistic optimism, but you don't shy away and your faith has remained unshakable. Never once have I seen a "I-don't-fancy-this-one" post from you. No matter who the opposition.

Seems everyone at Goodison believed last night. Even the players

They say it can move mountains.

Robert @5,

I think in truth, the "friendly derbies" died something like 40 years ago. Since then, we have been on the end of some dreadful abuse.

I would never say we are saints but the constant vitriol is damaging. Sad to say, even within families, you can get uncalled for abuse, I know that one!

I went to live in France for a few years back in 2015, so I got over to see games on a regular basis, proudly wearing my colours home and away.

What was so surprising, nay, upsetting, was the level of abuse I would get, not only at the motorway cafes but in the streets walking to the grounds. Never once did I cover my shirt or hide my scarf.

Mostly I could just laugh at the comments and move on, but the worst abuse I have had was on a bus going back into town after a game when 6 or 7 Reds decided it was reasonable to swear at me, call me names that would curl a telephone book, spit at me until I had to get off the bus. In my own city.

I know there are brilliant supporters on both sides, as well as the idiots, but you know, Robert, after giving so much abuse for so long, I am not surprised when opportunity comes to give it back in spades.

That's not to say it's okay to jeer or ridicule but its adversarial tribal nature goes back to the dawn of time.

Danny, brilliant, just brilliant! All those matches, week-in & week-out... but I bet nothing can compare to that win. It will still make you smile when you are old and grey.

I had bought several of my grandkids (4 of them) full kits to give to them for their birthdays here in New Zealand and Australia, eldest being 13, as well as three of my own sons and daughters.

It made me wince but I had thought we may not be even in existence before their birthdays were done, but there will be a family or two walking proudly around Brisbane and here in Hawera in royal blue to bemuse the locals.

Pride is a wonderful emotion, Danny; humility has its place too, but I love the day's descriptions you give because of your love and passion for all things blue, it's worn on the sleeve.

So next time you do it remember, you have a few thousand ToffeeWebbers alongside you. Never alone.

Danny, I am so pleaesed for you and the other superfans who go home and away.

It is a fitting reward for all your optimism and belief.

I have always maintained that if these players can have confidence and belief, they are not too bad – not Top 6 but certainly solid mid-table.

That confidence and belief came out in spades last night and was so good, you have to ask "Where has that been all season?"

The only logical answer is the weight of depression and negativity around the points deductions, referees' decisions and the half-baked takeover and the Chelsea game was an opportunity for Sean Dyche to shake the rafters.

My only concern last night was that, once again, when we go one up, we start to drop back deeper and that blunts us.

Hopefully with renewed confidence and, with the threat of relegation virtually gone, I hope we can continue on the front foot and go unbeaten for the rest of the season!!!!

Jay, that pent-up relief and joy will carry us through to the end of the season in style. We will be safe barring the Premier League – or should I say despite it..

On another thread, it was mentioned about Roy Keane saying players who raise their game are cheats. He is a fuckwit.

Some clubs have great players with the greatest skills, their ability way beyond the norm. Their average skill level never falls below brilliance. Good players can peak occasionally with flashes of brilliance.. the rest are competent, not cheats.

When it comes together, it's called a great team. The sum of all individuals together is far greater than each individual sum.

Keane was a thug on the pitch, as was Vinnie Jones... admire their passion but their intent was to win by fair or foul; if that meant crippling a star, then they thought it was okay.

When the stars line up, you get performances like the other night; when they don't, it's like Chelsea... We don't have enough quality to do it every week but, when it does, that's special.

Christine, keep those young blues believing. Their day will come. And they can come to the Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock and visit Goodison Park.

Let's just keep moving. Brentford, Luton and Sheffield United. We will get there.

I was at the match in our seats in Row B just behind the cameras

I actually nearly met my maker choking on a mint at the start of the Forest game, ironically caused by a sharp inhalation when the words of the song said ‘play beautiful football'… thanks to everyone who helped me not choke !

What a performance! Well done to all fans, players and Dyche. The team worked as a team, the back 4 and midfield moved in unison and were so organized

There were no crazy lunges resulting in penalties or yellows, and we gave away very little around the edge of the box.

Gana was outstanding, breaking things up, giving the ball to a blue shirt, and beating RS orcs again and again.

Garner, Harrison and McNeil chased everything.

Doucoure was off – he still looks like he thinks the ball is a hand grenade without its pin, but at times was so random he contributed positively.

Calvert-Lewin was excellent.

Give the players and Dyche credit and a break – as what a shit time we've really had, some of it real, some of it conspiracy. What seems to have happened is we've finally had a small share of luck.

Final point from me – what a great game the ref had, no-one is talking about him or his decisions which is just how it should be.

Danny, as I have only been a member of TW for this season.

I have read more posts than written, as I am a listener rather than a speaker, but I must say that I enjoy reading your match day accounts because of the insight that you provide into what it is like to be a travelling Blue (and that's just for the home games), covering many a mile in support of our great team.

Thank you for these posts.

Apparently Luke Littler was getting booed at a darts match in Liverpool, he's a Man Utd fan. Littler held his hand up signalling a two nil win for us, he surprisingly was booed even louder.👮👮👮

Anthony Flack 20: "What a great game the ref had, no-one is talking about him or his decisions which is just how it should be".

Pop onto redandwhitekop, Anthony, if you have the stomach for their pathetic whining and bitterness, and you'll see plenty of hysterics about the ref!

On the Soccerbus on the way home, there were just 2 RS on the bus amongst all the blues. I've never been on a Soccerbus where everyone was singing all the way back into town. Someone chatted to the reds and discovered that unfortunately (for them) they were Norwegian. Good natured, just about, "Fuck off back to Norway" chants all the way to the Empire.

I was behind them as we got off and they asked if I could tell them how to get to the airport, they were staying at the Crown in the old terminal. We walked round to Blacklers and finished up getting a taxi together. God I enjoyed that taxi ride!

Be in the Harlech on Saturday see you there.

Danny, a good read as always, thanks. I just missed you at The Harlech before the game.

What a night! I am still buzzin' from it as you can probably tell from the timing of this post – can't sleep! But who cares hey?

Anyway, looking forward to Brentford later today. Wary of the potential anti-climax but a great opportunity to make certain if other results go our way.

How good does it feel to be an Evertonian right now?

Bring it on – UTFTs
