Fan Article End of Term Report and Future Needs Sam Hoare 27/05/2025 59comments | Jump to last As I’m sure I can rely on Robert Tressell to provide a transfer target article that is as comprehensive – if not more so than my annual piece – I thought I might try a different tack with more of a squad breakdown. I think our needs moving forwards are fairly clear cut but here we go anyway. A big summer lies ahead with a re-build needed that seems quite unprecedented for an established Premier League club. Current Squad I’ve gone through our squad with my assessment of the players’ levels and hence where we need to strengthen. The grades are as follows: A top class player, capable of playing for a Top 4 Premier League club in his position. A good Premier League player, likely to be starting for a mid-table Premier League club and possibly playing in Europe. A solid player, able to do good work for a Premier League club in the bottom half. A player likely to be found at a club fighting relegation or playing for one of the better Championship clubs. Not ready for the Premier League. Goalkeepers Jordan Pickford (31) A One of our best and most reliable players over the last few years. Will likely be here next season unless a large offer arrives and may even be given the captain's armband if Coleman joins the coaching staff. Joao Viginia Leaving Asmir Begovic Leaving Right-Back Nthan Patterson (23) D/E Most of us had high hopes for the swashbuckling Scotsman but he has never really kicked on since his first season and has failed to impress a succession of managers. His contract runs for a couple more years. He could perhaps be a back up but may be best sold or loaned. Seamus Coleman (36) D (when fit) Could probably still do a job when fit but has had bad luck with injuries and sadly cannot be relied upon to be consistently available. May well move to join the coaching staff this summer. Ashley Young Leaving Roman Dixon (20) D/E With only a couple of games to his name, it’s difficult to make a judgement on the youngster. He certainly has the athleticism to succeed at right-back and could be a back-up but needs first-team games to develop. Centre-Back Jarrad Branthwaite (22) A/B Probably deserves an A though he started the season a little shakily at times. He has looked to be back to his best recently and will hopefully not be sold unless a huge offer over £70M comes in. I believe our PSR position will look better from this summer onwards and I expect to see him stay. James Tarkowski (32) C A solid pro who we have relied on a lot over his time here. He put his body on the line constantly and at some point that may begin to tell. He may well sign a new contract and will likely be here and hopefully fit for next season. At some point over the next few years, he will need to be phased out and may have lost a yard of pace already… but he's still a stalwart. Jake O’Brien (24) B/C Has looked excellent since Moyes arrived and did great work as a right-back where he could potentially play next season when Tarkowski returns. Long term he will be a replacement for Tarkowski or Branthwaite. He has the potential to get to the very top. Michael Keane (32) D A valiant servant who has got some important goals and is better than he perhaps will be remembered for. Still unclear if he will get a new contract. Could possibly be a cheap 4th choice but perhaps a young option would be better. He could be a great signing for a promoted team planning on a low block or even an ambitious Championship team (like Wrexham?). Left-Back Vitaliy Mykolenko (25) C Another who has looked much better under Moyes. The tough Ukrainian is hard to get past and has locked down the likes of Salah and Saka admirably but still lacks ability on the ball. He will probably stay first choice next season due to other weaker areas but a more progressive left-back will likely be needed at some point. Right-Wing Jack Harrison Leaving Jesper Lindstrom Leaving Centre-Midfield Idrissa Gana Gueye (35) A/B Remarkably, he seems to be getting better with age and I don’t think he would look out of place in any top team, as he proved at PSG. He is better on the ball than many give him credit for and defensively is one of the best in Europe. I really hope he stays as he would be one of the hardest players to replace. James Garner (24) C/D I was quite tempted to give him a D. He’s a very solid professional with some useful versatility but I don’t think he really does enough in either defence or attack. He’s tidy enough but has not become the playmaker we hoped he might. His fans may say he’d do better with better players around him but I'm not sure I see it currently. Tim Iroegbunam (21) D/E We’ve not seen a huge amount of him but I have big worries over his positioning and reading of the game. He definitely has some great physical attributes and perhaps could be used higher up the pitch in more of a Doucoure role. Looks to me like he has some learning to do and may be best sent off on loan to the Championship. Harrison Armstrong (18) D/E Bit of a wildcard who did very admirably at Derby County on loan. The Premier League is a big step up and it’s difficult to tell how he would fare. Moyes will presumably take a good look at him in pre-season. Unless Moyes plans to use him a fair bit, I’d reckon another loan (at Derby again, perhaps) may be best. He has time on his side and must be developed right. A star in the making. Orel Mangala (27) Leaving Left-Wing Iliman Ndiaye (25) B The Senegalese looked an ‘A’ before his injury but has struggled at times since coming back. Definitely one of our players of the season and top scorer to boot. It’s possible he may be used in the Number 10 position but has fitted in well on the left and will be a big part of the team next season. Dwight McNeil (25) C Despite a season disrupted by injury, he has done well with some big moments and is a reliable threat at set pieces. It will be interesting to see where he is used; he is less comfortable on the right where Moyes has played him recently. It could be that he is not first choice next season and as such may be available if a decent bid comes from a promoted team. Attacking Midfield Abdoulaye Doucoure Leaving Carlos Alcaraz (22, on loan) C We’ve not seen a huge amount of the Argentine but what we have seen is very promising. Moyes has tended to prefer Doucoure’s physicality and that may be a sign that he won’t see Alcaraz as first choice but nonetheless with such a low buy option of £12M it would seem a no-brainer to bring the talented youngster in permanently – especially as he can play in a few different positions. Striker Beto (27) C My man Beto has had a much better season and begun to look a more rounded striker in the last few weeks. He’s definitely not the smoothest operator but his goal return for minutes played is impressive and he certainly occupies defenders. At some point, we’ll want a better striker but they are hard to find and very popular. I’m not sure Beto does well as a sub as he needs game time to build momentum. It will be interesting to see if Moyes has faith in him to lead the line next season. Calvert-Lewin (28) C Another frustrating and unproductive season for him. His departure seemed inevitable and it seem likely that only his poor form and presumable lack of enticing offers has seen him return to the negotiating table recently. When fit, he’s a better link player than Beto and I’d be happy to see him stay as a squad option on a reasonable deal but it feels like a fresh start might be best for both parties. Youssef Chermiti (20) D/E Tough to know where the Portuguese is as we’ve seen so little of him. I had high hopes for him going into this season but injury struck and Moyes has not seemed to fancy him since. Desperately needs game time so I’m hoping he gets a loan next season and flourishes. Armanando Broja Leaving Areas to Reinforce 1. Right-WIng For me we’ve needed a good right-winger for years and it should be the top priority this summer. With Ndiaye or McNeil on the left, we have some guile and trickery so I’d like to see a real speedster on the right. Someone who can beat defenders at will whilst working hard and of course bagging a few goals and assists. Sounds easy enough, right? There are plenty of possible names and I’m sure Robert Tresswell will go through the options but I’ve always like Ernest Nuamah, who works hard, beats people, and is capable of scoring more. We’ve tracked him for a while though difficult to say how he’ll be after injury. he could be available at a cut price though possibly an unlikely option due to his ACL problems. Other names (of varying plausibility): Yaser Asprilla, Franco Mastantuono, Jesus Rodriguez, Lamine Cisse, Anis Hadji, Abdule Fatawa, Oliver Antman, Assan Diao, Dilane Bakwa, Dario Osorio, Omari Hutchinson, Jaden Philogene, Lucas Ferreira, Senny Mayulu, Cyraque Irie, Riquelme Felipe, Ben Doak, Johan Bakayoko, Amad Diallo, Tyler Dibling, Oscar Bobb, Wilson Odobert. 2. Right-Back Let’s re-build that right flank! O’Brien did a great job there but we would have so much more balance with a right-back able to defend well whilst also overlapping and getting crosses or good balls in. I’ve always been gutted that we didn’t sign Denzel Dumfries. Apparently it was pretty close for a time so I would like us to look at his heir apparent, Givairo Read; he’s only 18 and has had a great first season for Feyenoord, getting up and down his flank and managing 6 assists. Unlikely perhaps that Moyes places trust in such an untested quantity so here are some other names: Kyle Walker-Peters, Bashir Humphries, Lorenz Assignon, Guela Doue, Igor Serrote, Vanderson, Martim Fernandes, Ivan Fresnada, Josh Vagnoman, Elias Baum, Milan Van Ewijk, Tiago Santos, Isaa Kabore, Trai Hume, Wesley, Joel Drakes Thomas, Nelson Semedo, Vladmir Coufal. 3. Centre-Midfield Possibly an attacking midfielder could be in this spot but we have Ndiaye, McNeil, and presumably Alcaraz soon who could all play there, so I’m concentrating a little further back where I think we are lacking. Moyes loves a Championship player and so my pick here is Hayden Hackney who has been one of the best midfielders there this season. He reminds me a little of Adam Wharton (though at 23 he’s older) in that he is very composed and able to find a pass in even the tightest of spots. He also works hard and is able to carry the ball well. Not the quickest perhaps but a smart, well-rounded player who I think is more dynamic than James Garner. Other options: Tomas Soucek, Tom Bischof, Angelo Stiller, Andrey Santos, Javi Guerra, Lamine Camara, Hicham Bouadi, Luis Bahia, Andy Diouf, Hakon Haraldson, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Anton Stach, Mario Martin, Dan Neill, Chris Rigg, Assan Ouedraogo, Arthur Vermeeren, Hugo Larsson, Ardon Jashari, Malik Tillma, Zeno Debast. 4. Striker Difficult to know if Calvert-Lewin will stay and Chermiti go on loan but, whatever happens, I feel we could use another player able to offer something as a striker who could also fill in on the flank if needed. A Richarlison type who could bring something special and offer versatility to the squad. My preference for this spot is Evan Guessand who has looked a tricky customer for Nice this season. He’s fast and strong, able to score and create with 12 goals and 8 assists across 33 matches. He’s only 23 which is a good age for us to be looking around, fresh but not too raw. Able to do a job in a variety of positions. Some of the wingers I named above could do a job but here are few more names: Richarlison, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Manfred Ugalde, Lucas Strassin, Tolu Arokadare, Liam Delap, Victor Froholdt, Mikkel Bro Hansen, Emmanuel Emegha, Mika Biereth, Diego Luna. 5. Backup Goalkeeper There seems to be roundabout of second string keepers. Walter Benitez is out of contract and would be a great option if he could be persuaded. Perhaps Harry Tyrer might be given a shot after a decent spell at Blackpool. Those feel like the essentials. But certainly there are likely to be positions to still fill depending on who else leaves or if anyone is sold etc. 6. Backup Left-Back Mykolenko will likely be first choice but we need a backup or preferably a more attacking alternative, presumably someone cheap as there are other priority positions. El Hadji Diouf (a name to send shivers!) is a young dynamic left back having a great season for Slavia Prague. He beats players at will and gets up and down his flank all day. Should be cheap and could be a good alternative in matches where we expect to have more of the ball. More options: Junior Firpo, Aaron Creswell, Nathaniel Brown, Sergi Cardona, Diego Moreira, Alvaro Carerras, Diogo Travassos, Harry Amass, Almugera Kabar, Mikayil Faye, Quentin Merlin. 7. Centre-Back Presuming Michael Keane leaves and Moyes does not fancy any of the Academy players (none look ready to me), then we will need a 4th-choice centre-back. If we sell Branthwaite, then we will need a new starter to replace him potentially — though O'Brien and Tarkowski could work. There’s lots of great young centre-backs out there… most of them French! Jeremey Jaquet is the latest young star off the production line at Rennes. He is fast and powerful and at only 19 looks to be a star of the future and the next William Saliba potentially. Other names: Joel Ordonnez, Clement Akpa, Victor Garbiel, Diego Coppola, Ryan Flamingo, Nathan Zeze, Joane Gadou, Ousmane Diomande, Mosquera, Sepp Van den Berg, Otavio, Oumar Solet. Transfer Spending and Future Squad People more knowledgeable than me seem certain that we should have a lot more wiggle room with PSR this summer and could potentially spend some much bigger sums depending on the means and intentions of The Friedkin Group. At Roma this year, they have a net spend of around £90M and I think it’s not totally unreasonable to hope for a similar amount ourselves. At a minimum, we need 5 or 6 new players in and probably 3 to 4 of those will be able to go straight into the first team which usually requires decent expenditure of very canny operating. I can imagine the free agent market being utilised with the likes of Josh Brownhill and Kyle Walker-Peters perhaps appealing to help buff out the squad. To get into Football Manager mode, I believe the players I’ve picked above may cost somewhere in the region of: Carlos Alcaraz: £12MErnest Nuamah: £17MGivairo Read: £15MHayden Hackney: £16MEvan Guessand: £20MEl Hadji Diouf: £10MKyle Walker-Peters: freeWalter Benitez: freeJesper Lindstrøm: loanArmando Broja: loan That’s £90M which I hope might be doable (plus Jeremy Jacquet for £20M if Braithwaite is sold) and would give us a first team and squad that looks like this: PickfordRead Tarkowski Branthwaite MykolenkoGana HackneyNuamah Alcaraz NdiayeBeto Subs: Benitez, O’Brien, Walker-Peters, Diouf, Garner, Lindstrøm, Guessand, Broja. I think that team looks interesting and has the potential to be a real force on the counter-attack. Crucially, the bench looks strong (though there may be better loans to be had than Lindstrøm and Broja) and gives us the chance to loan out Chermiti and Armstrong to hopefully flourish and be ready to join first team in Season 26-27. All the players I’ve theoretically spent money on are 23 years old or younger and would likely grow in value if they did even a decent job. We’ve finished 13th this season and for me next seasona small progression to around 10th or 11th should be the aim. It’s hard to improve rapidly whilst undergoing a big squad rebuild. We need to bring in younger players with resale value in order to emulate the process that has seen the likes of Brighton and Brentford progress. Young gems mixed in with sensible affordable experience. I’m slightly nervous as to why the likes of Purdy and Thelwell have not been replaced yet and keen that Moyes should not have too much sway over transfer dealings. He has shown good judgement for the most part historically but will naturally favour the short-term gains whereas well run clubs always recruit with an eye to the future. Next season will not be easy; Leeds Utd and Burnley are better teams than we had at the bottom this season and surely Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United will not be as poor. It’s a big summer but with Pickford, Branthwaite, O’Brien, Gana (hopefully) and Ndiaye proving a solid base, I’m hopeful we can continue to build on the good work Moyes has done since arriving. Disclaimer () Andy Crooks 1 Posted 27/05/2025 at 20:47:38 Great article, Sam. Like you, I'm concerned that Thelwell has not been replaced and worried that Moyes might already be involved. We need to be building a squad for the next coach, a few years down the line. Short-term thinking has been a blight.Moyes has done a remarkable job but his is a short contract and we really don't want survival to be our target. Neil Copeland 2 Posted 27/05/2025 at 21:07:55 Sam, I enjoyed reading your article thanks.Did you leave Dwight McNeil out of your team and squad intentionally? Also, do we have to pay for Beto this summer, or is his fee spread over a number of years?I have never heard of most of the players mentioned so a bit of an education for me! Kieran Kinsella 3 Posted 27/05/2025 at 22:14:38 El Hadji Dioufi lol. Didn't expect to see that name here thankfully it is a namesake and not the RS "legend." I think you were pretty accurate with your ratings especially Garner who underwhelms me. Amazing how O'Brien looked like a dud before Christmas and now is looking like a cracking signing. Sam Hoare 4 Posted 27/05/2025 at 22:16:39 Thanks Andy.Neil, Dwight McNeil should be on subs bench. Was rushing end of the article a bit. Though if a promoted team offered £20m+ for him Id be tempted. I believe Beto fee is spread out. Don Alexander 5 Posted 27/05/2025 at 22:56:56 Just as an aside, Paddy Power have created and broadcast this spoof ad;https://www.facebook.com/reel/8497549123703534Says it all really, for the past decades too. David Midgley 6 Posted 27/05/2025 at 00:05:36 Sam. interesting stuff. Have you seen all the players you've listed play ? Are the individual groups i.e centre mid in preference order or are they a collective ? The final group is obviously your preffered one but given that Broja and Lindy have left do you see them coming back ? Is Jack Grealish clickbait ? Rob Tedford 7 Posted 28/05/2025 at 00:44:11 I like some of the players youve listed and totally agree with need pace in the team, heres a few targets Id like to see us get Right back, Omar el hiali, KWPCM, Habib Diarra, Angel Gomez RW, Chukwueze, Roony BardghjiFW Manfred Ugalde, Delap Like your call of diouf for LB Dream window, vanderson diarra cherki, delap, as I said I can dream Paul Ferry 8 Posted 28/05/2025 at 04:14:09 Neil Copeland: 2: "I have never heard of most of the players mentioned so a bit of an education for me!".Top point/post Neil. But, with respect, you need to commit yourself and follow through on what you clearly want to say, You're thinking along the same lines as me mate, that Sam makes most of these names up. What happened to one of last year's top right-flank Hoare picks: Dario Glomoskyriatz from Olympusus? What became of Hodsini Multainmoshuvus,, the FC Treiton right-back, who Hoare kept plugging till the cows come home? Good luck trying to find Multainmoshuvus through Google or the Treiton home page. It's probably safer that Sam is rating the squad this year and people should fact check all those names he gives in throwaway lists. That said, I think Sam's rating are spot on. James Garner (C/D): I might have been tempted to give him a D. After a first-rate comeback game he flatters to deceive. Good at running. One goal in 74 games FFS. Four assists FFS. Nowhere near the tackle/interception value that Gana brings. Cross accuracy 22%; Shot accuracy 29%. We will not get where we ought to be with players like Garns and similarly Dwight McNeil (C): Our midfield goal return rate is so poor. Hopefully - and the signs are there - Alcaraz (C: agree) might help our here if TFG don't fuck up his purchase.Dwights has seven goals in his last 56 appearances for us (7 in 134 appearances for Burnley). 15 assists in 76 games (7.5 a season) is good. His crosses can be shite or sublime; his set pieces can be shite or sublime. Lacks speed. Tim Iroegbunam (D/E): it makes me smile when a few on here talk of Timmy as a top player in the making who has already shown the appropriate signs. Of what? 30 PL appearances (23 off the bench to be fair), zero goals. We have seen nowhere near enough of him to decide whether he is good or poor and he might be either. Beto (C): Somewhat jaw-dropping that you seem happy Sam to have Betters who you rate as "C" to start next season. What's the tally? Eleven goals, sixty appearances (36 as sub to be fair). Never been a striker with a high hit-rate. His five or six one-on-one pitiful fluffs after his goals drained up (put the ball in front of him to run onto and he will score) are not that far behind the number of goals. I thought he did well at The Skunks but another howler missed that would have made us safe and was it two headers where he rose well and did not get the ball on target - learn to head the ball down lad, it might sometimes help: google Derek Mountfield goals. That all said, I am deeply impressed that Beethoven's 9th is his music of choice in the car on the way to Finch Farm. What do these four fellas have in common? None of them are good enough at this moment in my view to take us up to where we would like to be. Danny O'Neill 9 Posted 28/05/2025 at 05:15:57 Sam, Another one who posts something that has obviously taken a lot of detailed research.Like Neil, I have no idea who most of those players are that you put forward as options.I don't agree with all of your ratings, but that's all down to opinions, which I respect.Rather than go through the individual ratings you opine, as I'll do that myself once I come down from this emotional season, if I was to rate the team overall?Half-term report. F (for fail) minus. You need to sort yourself out girl, or you're heading for scrap heapSecond half. C minus. Recovered well enough to pass the GCSE. Let that be a warning and show you what hard work can do. Now go and do better.Harsh? Maybe. But it depends on expectations. We didn't live up to our motto over the course of the season. Paul Ferry 10 Posted 28/05/2025 at 05:36:39 Mean Danny: 1st term/semester (D-); 2nd term/semester (B) Danny O'Neill 11 Posted 28/05/2025 at 05:43:36 I know Paul. There were times before and just after Christmas when I was leaving Goodison and other stadiums feeling numb, struggling to comprehend what I had just witnessed. Like you, we've lived through the good times and the dreadful 90s, with Joe Royle's brief spike a welcome relief. But I don't think I've felt as low as I did earlier this season until the change was made. And then it got better. The players were playing with more freedom and the supporters got their mojo back. Paul Ferry 12 Posted 28/05/2025 at 05:55:18 But I don't think I've felt as low as I did earlier this season until the change was made.Completely agree Danny. Worst I've ever felt. In the 90's I just knew we would stay up, that we would get through it. Mind you, I was younger, Dyche drained me of all I had - Everton energy, emotion, hope. I came to hate him, With Benitez I was frozen numb. Dyche I now see was worse and longer. The three hard boiled eggs will always be a blot on our club mate. Thank God is can only get better for our kids and teenagers. Ian Bennett 13 Posted 28/05/2025 at 07:07:54 Amen on that. It was the most demoralising stuff I've ever seen. No goals and game over once the opposition scored. Some thought we could limp through till end of the season. Losing to Southampton twice, they were braver man than I.I am going to pick up on Andy's comment. Moyes buys well, and will buy players that will have a value to the next managers. I can't recall him buying a lot of 30 year olds in his time for big money, and certainly the next managers will inherit a good position. He does need to buy some proven quality within the team mind. It's all well signing good players for the future, but they need to see good players around them now to have any hope of retaining them, to avoid being assst stripped later. That doesn't need to be 30 year olds - but it does need good players that make us win games in the here and now.Building the league positions and perception of everton, is just as important as building the squad in my view. It also gives him the tools to do the job. Fan exoectation is increased, and so he will need players that can support that demand for the majority. We all talk about winning a cup and end the embarrassing drought. He needs to build a squad that has a chance of winning those games. It's what 6 games to win the fa cup? Ian Jones 14 Posted 28/05/2025 at 07:53:33 Interesting read Sam. ThanksIt's just a shame that football is so different these days.As you have indicated... players don't get the opportunity to get extended runs in teams to show what they can do and constant management changes with different tactical challenges doesn't help. Sam Hoare 15 Posted 28/05/2025 at 07:54:44 Paul@8, I wish I was making them up! Or perhaps using AI to write the article. Would save me a lot of time and I'd meet my deadlines quicker.Interestingly my top picks last time were: Iliman Ndiaye, Wilfried Gnonto, Ferdi Kadioglu and Jake O'Brien. All players who had been heavily linked with us. Ndiaye and O'Brien turned out ok. Kadioglu went to Brighton and got a bad injury. Gnonto hasn't kicked on hugely but helped Leeds get promoted and is still very young.Glad you agree mostly with my ratings. I think I would be content to see Beto start next season for us but maybe not the following season. Long term he's probably not good enough but short term he's a pretty good fit for what Moyes wants. He misses some glaring one on ones for sure but then most strikers do. Our public pursuit of Delap probably suggests that Moyes feels the same way you do and wants a new starting striker. I reckon if Beto played all next season he'd bag 10-15 goals and that would do for me, I'd expect a similar return from Delap.David@6, I try to watch clips on most of the players I've suggested but not extensively. Mostly I read online scouting reports from people whose opinions I trust and cross reference with stats I can find from fbref and whoscored. The lists are not in any order.Grealish is clickbait yes. Would have prohibitively large wages and probably want European football. I guess you never know for sure but would seem very unlikely to me. Paul Ferry 16 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:29:21 I reckon if Beto played all next season hed bag 10-15 goals and that would do for me, Id expect a similar return from Delap. That's fair Sam. I think Delap would. score more and contribute more maybe not by a mile. But wherever we look Sam we need need new recruits. I honestly feel that right-back and striker x2 or x1 are top priorities.Anyway, don't stop please. You and Robert and comparisons between are so valuable. That was a top round of recommendations this time last year. Warm wishes for the writing. Let us know more about the new footy project when everything you have to balance allows. Steve Shave 17 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:33:21 Excellent article thanks Sam, appreciate the time and effort gone into writing that. I mostly agree on your ratings though would give Tarks a B, his solidity and consistency over the years makes me think he has earned that. I love the speculation as I know you and a few others do and spend way too much time watching videos and researching players...dreaming that one day we can compete again. My wish list is unrealistic in the sense that many will be after these players, especially the ones available for free. I would like Wesley at RB (though he is going to be expensive) failing that Walker-Peters (free) if its to be the latter then a really promising youngster to push him by the end of the season. At RM i'd like Fellows (£15m) unless Doak can be got for similar money and the £30M bandied around is just clickbait, I also like Nuamah but as you say, its a risk after an ACL injury. I'd also go for Poku at Peterborough who I have watched alot of videos on, maybe could get him for £4M and could be a diamond in the rough. I do think we need two wingers. Charlie boy for £15M obviously, legend in waiting there and a no brainer. I have touted Delap all season so I don't feel a need to go over it again, he will be the no 9 we have waited for, I would keep Beto too and agree with Paul Ferry that he could get 15 goals next season, i'd be made up for him.Angel Gomes (free) and Davies or Mitchell at Lb (free), someone like John Ruddy as back up GK (free). So that is: £30m Delap, £15m Fellows, £4m Poku, £15m Charlie and Wesley for £20M. Gomes, Ruddy and Davies all on free's. That is a speculated transfer outlay of £84m but of course there would be signing on fees, agents fees etc. So that is my £100m budget wishlist. To save we could go all out for Walker-Peters and save £20m of that. We will be saving a shit ton in wages once the likes of DCL, Doucs and Holgate et al leave. I would keep Keane and Gana, 2 year contracts for both if that is what it takes to retain Gana. Pure conjecture and fun of course, I know this speculation can get up some people's noses. Some job Moyes has this summer, what I don't want to see are his old type of signings, seasoned pro's who aren't going to raise the pulse like Soucek, I have a fear he will go for Coufal who is not good enough unless we are selling Patterson and then he is an able deputy to a much better RB like Wesley or Walker-Peters. Paul Ferry 18 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:41:58 Steve Shave 17. I mostly agree on your ratings though would give Tarkoski a B, his solidity and consistency over the years makes me think he has earned that.Agree Steve. That was the one question I had.Fantastic OP from Sam. Mike Gaynes 19 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:46:05 Sam, great summary and great list. Like Neil, I've never seen or even heard of most of the candidates you mentioned, so I'm glad you and Robert are constantly on patrol. My only disagreement with you is that centre-back isn't the #7 priority. If Keane leaves, it's #1. I firmly believe Tarkowski will not be ready for the start of the season, and maybe not until late fall, so veteran backups for Jake and Jarrad are desperately needed.Re Beto, the goal return for minutes played you mentioned is one every 196 minutes over the past four seasons -- every 186 minutes since Moyes promoted him -- and plus he has missed only 15 games with injury or illness over that period. Solid.(By comparison, the numbers for Calvert-Lewin over that span are one every 376, and 83 missed.)And I have come to agree with you on Iroegbunam. I think he's going to be a fine player, but his defensive instincts are a worry and you may be right that he needs to be farther up the pitch. Sam Hoare 20 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:56:08 Thanks Paul. Currently writing on series 2 of Rivals and have a show about William The Conqueror coming out later this year on BBC 1.Thanks Steve@17, thats a good list. I forgot Fellowes from my list for some reason. Seems a likely Moyes buy though he reminds me more of Ndiaye, tricky rather than explosive and think I was hoping for some real pace on the right wing (like Doak if not overpriced). Poku had a great season, rare for players to jump up two divisions but maybe worth a cheap punt. Wesley looks a quality right back. Delap I have mixed feelings on, not quite so sold as others but has some great qualities and opportunity to improve. Alcaraz is only £12m so theres £3m saved already! Robert Tressell 21 Posted 28/05/2025 at 08:59:58 Great article Sam - and what a difference it makes to actually have a meaningful budget to dream about. It would help the cause enormously to announce a few signings early in the window. Lots of names in there to think about. Hopefully when the window closes we have sorted out the right flank and added pace, quality and depth to a squad that needs some surgery. Paul Ferry 22 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:03:31 Sam, WTC, is that a documentary or fictionalised? Either way, do you go back to Falaise and the Duchy of Normandy? Damn, I'd lost track, Rivals on Disney is huge. You'll be relocating to Holland Park soon. Got season 1 to watch when I'm next sick in bed all day which looks like being Friday.CONGRATULATIONS. Andrew Ellams 23 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:07:52 Sam, is that the new BBC drama on William? I saw a couple of trailers, looking forward to it. https://youtu.be/uNPEeT1NFDI?si=W_dRJZhrVnAA02Wz Sam Hoare 24 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:27:35 Paul, fictional drama. Goes back a bit to Williams youth and the turbulence in Normandy but mainly deals with tussle for English crown culminating in Hastings.Andrew, yes. Though not sure they've released an official trailer yet.Robert @21, yes, seems a while since we've had a fully functioning right flank!Mike@19, I guess I see Branthwaite and O'Brien as two very proficient starters so not sure if it's #1 priority for me but Keane leaving and Tarkowski's injury does make it an important position to reinforce. Andrew Ellams 25 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:29:09 Sam, the BBC did one of those things to look out for this year compilations. Mike Doyle 26 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:31:12 Sam. I trust you won't let your work on Rivals & William The Conqueror stop you exposing the John Simm character (clearly a wrong un') in the next series of Grace? Laurie Hartley 27 Posted 28/05/2025 at 09:39:42 Thanks for this article, Sam. Of all the players you have listed, if I had to pick one only to have an immediate impact on our play, I would pick Jayden Philogene.Admittedly I don't know anything about most of them but I am pretty sure that he would make big difference to our forward play.Second pick would be Dan Neill but that is a pipe dream now Sunderland have been promoted. David Bromwell 28 Posted 28/05/2025 at 11:08:39 If we are aiming to finish next season in the top half of the table, and give ourselves a decent run in the cup competitions, I think we need a squad of 22 players. Currently, we are well short of that number and I would have thought a number of quick fixes together with a number of key signings will be needed. Okay, this is all very obvious, but it will involve a lot of negotiations, and some outlay to secure the key players. I am hopeful that this will all be achieved before the squad head off to the States. We have so few first team starters that last-minute additions will be too much of a risk and leave me feeling nervous. Martin Mason 29 Posted 28/05/2025 at 12:33:57 The really worrying thing is that we will have to have an incredible transfer window to just stand still, hampered by financial limits and Fair Play regulations. Newcastle to buy Guehi and Mbueno? How can we compete with that? And there are several clubs in their situation too. We are going to be limited in potential by what we can spend, especially as we need to buy more players than all but the promoted clubs. What hope do they have, what hope do we have in reality? Sam Hoare 30 Posted 28/05/2025 at 12:47:23 Martin, I think we just have to be clever and scout well, buying players before they have exploded in price.Guehi cost palace £18M and Mbuemo was only £6M. Players who have made an impact in the Premier League tend to be overpriced, which is why I'm slightly wary of throwing the sink at Delap (though the release clause makes him £10M cheaper than he'd otherwise be). David Midgley 31 Posted 28/05/2025 at 12:49:38 Sam. Harold, standing on a knoll watching Normans in the distance. Calls to a captain "Bring me your best archer. Show me what you can do." 1st arrow - Shot into a tree. 2nd arrow - Struck and out of sight. 3rd arrow- Strikes a horse in the backside. Harold, "He's useless. Keep clear of him he'll put some buggers eye out." Robert Tressell 32 Posted 28/05/2025 at 13:03:14 Martin, it's a good point. The reality is we won't enter the new season with one of the 10 best squads. The last 5 years of extreme cost cutting – culiminating in wide scale departures – means the gap is too big.I expect our squad quality will be about 11th to 14th by the close of the window. But we can start an effective building process and should aim for European places and cup trophies. Whether we get there will come down to the recruitment team over performing in the market – and Moyes over performing across the season Christy Ring 33 Posted 28/05/2025 at 13:29:40 Great article, Sam, and well thought out with a good budget.Nuamah a good shout but I reckon he'd cost a bit more. I would love his clubmate Cherki. John Pickles 34 Posted 28/05/2025 at 14:01:17 Great read, Sam, no surprise there. I look forward to comparing our squad at the end of the window to your wish list.Personally, I think the best (or most promising) striker that we can persuade to join and someone on the right to supply him is where most of our efforts and money should go. A competent right back next, with the rest, mainly, free transfers and loans (ideally, with an option to buy). Sam Hoare 35 Posted 28/05/2025 at 14:25:17 David @31, ha! Very good. Though apparently the poor bloke with an eyeful in the Bayeux Tapestry is not Harold after all! Alan J Thompson 36 Posted 28/05/2025 at 14:28:33 Sam, perhaps for novelty value you can get Courtney Cox(?) to do the narrative as I saw on a "Who do you think you are" programme that her lineage was traced back to William the Conqueror. Sam Hoare 37 Posted 28/05/2025 at 14:56:53 Some links with Nick Woltemade this week. Better teams than us chasing him but a really interesting prospect. Built like Peter Crouch but moves like Ndiaye. He could play striker or No 10 or possibly even out wide as he beats players regularly. 17goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances this season. Ed Prytherch 38 Posted 28/05/2025 at 15:46:04 Alan, I believe that a large proportion of British people have lineage back to William I. Three of my grandparents do and the 4th is Welsh. Raymond Fox 39 Posted 28/05/2025 at 15:53:34 Thanks, Sam.To be honest just thinking about recruitment gives me a headache, whoever is tasked with the job at the club has my sympathy.Apart from what I would term an important top match and our own games, I can't sit through a full game so my opinion on most players is not worth much. I think there is a tendency to underestimate your own players because you watch all their time on the field whereas often your seeing highlights of other clubs' players. You can have the best eye in the world for players ability, but the hard part is you then have to agree terms and get them to sign on the dotted line. Danny O'Neill 40 Posted 28/05/2025 at 16:07:45 After the turnaround, we can and should go into next season with confidence.Sorry to beat an old viewpoint, but for those who bet, Forest were odds on for relegation. They almost secured Champions League and are playing in Europe next season. If you believe, it can happen.I'm going into pre-season and next season with my usual spirits and expectations for our club.I've seen enough in the stands to know the supporters believe as much as I do.Everton the Gear Ian Bennett 41 Posted 28/05/2025 at 16:27:30 There's a difference to the Top 10 squad on paper or TransferMarkt, than the results you get. Moyes has proved that by taking points valuations alone, say we come up short.A Top 10 finish for me is the minimum. New stadium and settling in are a challenge, but I do back Moyes to win the home games he should, and take points on the road. 29 points in half a season puts us above Bournemouth by simply doubling up. Even more odd is we lost the same number of games as Champions League Newcastle, despite Dyche's terrible contribution for 2024-25.I accept we are losing some players, but most of what is going delivered nothing on the pitch in terms of results, vs the impact you'd expect from some decent signings. Jeff Spiers 42 Posted 28/05/2025 at 16:30:33 I believe, according to YouTube, we are interested in Jack Grealish. Mike Gaynes 43 Posted 28/05/2025 at 16:39:02 Danny #40, keep beating that viewpoint. I remember Brentford were also considered relegation meat when they came up, and nobody had Bournemouth doing much this season, and look at 'em. So please keep reminding my pessimistic self that a rapid turnaround can happen. Martin Mason 44 Posted 28/05/2025 at 17:00:47 Remember though, you're all correct about the Forest and Brentford analogy but remember that, especially with Forest, they have a deep squad of fair quality with a small group of quality. Remember how many players they bought. Where we will be is a very small squad of what is getting to be pretty high-quality players and very little depth to manage injuries and to rest players. The very fluid defensive way that we play now is amazing and exactly how a small squad is able to play… but is it sustainable? Could we become one-trick ponies after being a three- ring circus? They remind me just now of the Leeds Utd side in the '60s that established itself by playing defensive football which blossomed eventually. Peter Mills 45 Posted 28/05/2025 at 18:50:44 I've been doing my own research on Gustavo Hamer of Sheffield Utd, with whom we've been linked:-“Our player of the season for 3 out 4 seasons, except when we were in the Premier League when we were shite. Good attacking midfielder. Fast!”“Quality player on his day but I'm surprised you're in for him to be honest – not sure he's got the physique to be a top Premier League player. He might look good in a good team.”When questioned about his stamina, my spies said “Likes a kebab and a beer, I believe!” Come on, Sam – that's the level of detail we need! Ian Pilkington 46 Posted 28/05/2025 at 21:07:42 Sam,Many thanks for taking the time to write such a thoroughly researched article.Looking forward to watching “King and Conqueror”. A drama series on this hugely important period of our history is long overdue. Jeff Spiers 47 Posted 28/05/2025 at 22:15:42 Battle of Hastings was never fought there. The armies met at a small town called Battle. Steve Shave 48 Posted 28/05/2025 at 22:29:05 Yes, Sam, I forgot about Woltemade, I thought he had moving to Dortmund written all over him. Really interesting player, I think I read he is 6ft-6in but as you say very mobile and can dribble like Iliman. He'd cost north of £30M but, at 22, a really interesting option. If Chelsea steal Delap, then that might pave the way for the Strasbourg lad Emegha, 6ft-5in and very pacey, looks very good. Third option for me would be the lad from Nice you mentioned. David Midgley 49 Posted 29/05/2025 at 22:55:23 Can this page be sent to Moyes ? Eric Myles 52 Posted 02/06/2025 at 04:22:44 Andy #1 & Ian #13, what makes you think that Moyes would be building a squad for the next manager? If he's successful, he's in pole position to have his contract extended — so he'll be building for his future at the club. Matt Traynor 53 Posted 02/06/2025 at 05:57:25 Eric #52, I think you're bang on the money. Moyes was never coming back for the short-term. Whilst I think he's improved as a manager, and as a person, with his career and experiences since, there's some personality traits that will remain.I doubt very much he will follow the traditional DoF / Head Coach model - and that may not be a bad thing given where we are now as a club. The only way Moyes goes is if results, and to a lesser extent the play, go south. Rebuilds take time, he's 61 - maybe in 4-5 years he'll be at a stage where he's ready to hand over and step back or "move upstairs".He certainly isn't doing it for the money at this stage. Danny O'Neill 54 Posted 02/06/2025 at 06:12:36 Eric I agree to a degree.Moyes will have an influence on the types of player he wants and he knows which areas we need. That will be for the next season or two, building foundations. But I think, and don't claim to know, we will see the DoF/Director of Sport/Recruitment Team (whatever we're calling this week), will start to have more and more influence.Like I say, no knowledge, just a hunch. The manager/head coach probably won't have near complete control as Moyes has tended to operate, especially during his first spell with us.This is not Moyes bashing by the way. He will be with us for possibly the next two seasons. Maybe longer if he is successful. But I think, and again, I don't know, the owners will have an eye on longer-term future. They, and their appointed executive board will be calling most of the shots in my opinion, advised by Moyes with his input. He can get on with getting the best out of the first team squad, whoever that is comprised of.I hope that when we get to Wembley, he get's to bring a trophy home to Everton. Then, as well as rescuing us this season, his job is done. Sam Hoare 55 Posted 02/06/2025 at 20:50:57 Some links to Trai Hume today, a right back on my list. The Sunderland youngster had a good season and is a solid all rounder who would help sure up our right side whilst offering more on the ball than our current options. Six assists for Sunderland this season. Ian Bennett 56 Posted 02/06/2025 at 21:44:48 Eric 52 - purely that there will be good players left behind when he goes. Not hard, but its been diminishing levels for too long.Sam 55 - I watched a fair bit of Sunderland at the tail end of the season. I wanted to see what the hype was around Rigg. Cirken, Neill, Hume, Rigg looked to me as if you'll need a fair bit of patience. They might be out of reach come next summer, but equally not sure they're ready to go in the first 10, 20, 40 games. I am also not sure we can wait that long with our squad depth, it could be a tricky start for them. I really liked Jobe Bellingham. Casual, but the Premier league is letting one go if he's off to Germany. Good physique, good on the ball and a bit of edge. Feel sorry he"s carrying the name a bit, as hes good player without that comparison always put on him.All gone quiet on Juanlu Sanchez from Sevilla. 21 year right back/winger, 6ft 1. 4 goals, 4 assists in a stronger, more technical league. Sevilla are skint and out of Europe, so could be gettable. Sam Hoare 57 Posted 03/06/2025 at 07:30:48 Ian, it sounds like you've watched more Sunderland than me but statistically Hume was the best right back in the championship last season which bodes well as he's only just turned 23. From what I've seen he's hard working, and quick though not rapid with good reading of the game and a real determination to get the ball one way or another. Tidy though not super dynamic on the ball.Juanlu Sanchez is definitely more dynamic and could be an interesting choice if Moyes wants someone to carry the ball more and get forward. He's actually played more games at Amc (6) than RB (4) this season so would probably be risky as a full back aqcuisition but an interesting versatile squad player if available on the cheap. Ian Bennett 58 Posted 03/06/2025 at 07:51:47 Yeah, I was a bit disappointed by Sunderland in a lot of the games I watched. It's a young team, and I thought they would be more of a brighter, more of a swash buckling side. They weren't, but they have come a long way in a short period of time. They have a tough season ahead of them for a good fan base who have had it rough. For us, the combination of right back and right winger is going to need a fair amount of thought.I am not a huge Mykolenko fan, but I can see that he will continue in that position for some time. That allows a good attacking right back to play for us - and the ability to drop Obrien back into right back if you're being over run. That leaves the need for a two footed right winger that can go both ways, and that has pace and intelligence No easy task, but if Brentford and Bournemouth can sign mbeumo and semenyo for buttons, it gives hope that they can be found with effort. Sam Hoare 59 Posted 03/06/2025 at 09:22:18 Ian, yes. I'm really excited to see what we bring in on the right flank. It seems like its been a weak spot of ours for some time though Obrien did a great job at rb defensively. There's lots of great options out there. I still like the look of Givairo Read as stated above to be that dynamic overlapping/underlapping option but can imagine Moyes going for someone a little more tried and tested. He loves a Championship player which is why I can see Trai Hume appealing. I'd love someone like Daniel Munoz exploding up that right flank with hard working pacey right winger to dovetail with. Curious that we don't seem to have been linked with many right wingers yet, with the exception of Ben Doak who I like but would not spend more than 15-20m on with his injury history. Ian Bennett 60 Posted 03/06/2025 at 09:36:30 Yeah, Munoz has been a great signing for Palace. £6.5m, and up there as right back of the season. There scouting has done a great job. Just looked and see Dougie Freedman is now in Saudi. He will be a big miss to Palace. Sam Hoare 61 Posted 05/06/2025 at 14:42:34 I see Wolves have apparently bid for my first striker/versatile forward target Evann Guessand! Up to £25m which is a decent fee.
