Fan Article Right-back watch: 2025 I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this – but we could do with signing a right-back. Robert Tressell 19/10/2025 38comments | Jump to last I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this – but we could do with signing a right-back. Picture the day that we line up with fast, agile and cultured back 4 capable of playing front-foot, big club style football. The defensive line moves higher up the pitch, our midfield gets closer to the forwards – and our wide playmakers in Grealish, Ndiaye and Dibling have passing options on the outside. This is a key part of our transformation into a big club - and a key part of a transformation into a club that scores goals. In Branthwaite and O’Brien, we might well have the centre-backs for the job. In Aznou, who knows... we may have picked up our long-term left-back on the cheap. But at right-back we have no one. So, in the vain hope that we finally buy in (or loan) what we’ve needed since March 2017 (when Seamus Coleman broke his leg), here’s a quick look at what might be available in January. Not to be… Acheampong: elegant, classy 19-year-old at Chelsea who is surely destined for a brilliant International and Champions League career. I was hoping he’d be frozen out and available on loan but probably not to be. Bradley: dynamic 22-year-old with plenty of guts and skill. Despite Frimpong’s arrival at Liverpool, he’s also still getting plenty of games. Exactly the sort of player our fans would love. Seems out of the question that he’d leave Anfield for us. Boey: cultured French right-back for Bayern Munich who took a little while to settle after arriving from Turkey. Despite Bayern’s use of converted midfielder Laimer at right-back, he’s still getting plenty of games. Currently linked with Juventus. Seems a long shot. Short term options… Mazraoui: 27-year-old largely restricted to limited minutes as a sub at Man Utd. Cultured and versatile player – albeit not without flaws. Would be a bit underwhelming but could be quite good as a try-before-you-buy loan. Rensch: 22-year-old largely restricted to limited minutes as a sub, behind Celik and Wesley at Roma. Fast and dynamic player. Not a bad option on a try before you buy loan. I thought he might come in summer but it obviously didn’t happen. Assist kings… Costa: 5 assists in 6 games for Porto, the 22-year-old is a really classy option. However, he’s only just returned to Portugal in a £12m deal from Juventus in July. So would seem an unlikely move in January. Van Ewijk: 5 assists in 9 games for 25-year-old Dutch right-back in his third season at Coventry. Probably deserves a step up. Exactly the sort of player Moyes has done well with previously. Unfortunately, Coventry’s current promotion form means they might be unwilling to sell. Huescas: 4 assists in 10 games for the 22-year-old Mexican playing for Copenhagen. Obviously, it’s a weaker league than Portugal or the Championship so he might struggle initially. Linked to Dortmund before they bought Couto from City. Like a few I’ll go on to mention, he could be a brilliant buy if we already had a more established right-back – which would give him a bit of time to acclimatise to a much tougher league. Touted for moves… Sanchez: Seville right-back that we (and lots of others) have been looking at for about the last 18 months or so. 22 years old; currently linked with Napoli. Shares the right-back position with Carmona. Got 4 assists in 32 games last season. Looks like a good player. Possibly the best all-round option for us. El Ouahdi: 23-year-old Genk right-back, with 4 goals and 1 assist in 9 games this season – after a strong performance last year in Belgium. Linked with more mid-tier clubs like Wolfsburg, Rennes, Galatasaray, AC Milan and Benfica. El Hilali: 22-year-old Espanyol right-back. Classy defender and comfortable in attacking positions despite not being big on assists. Linked with the likes of Arsenal, City, Villa and Brighton in the last 18 months. He could be a not very glamorous but really sensible option as a mature player defensively with good technique. Read: Got 7 assists in 26 games for Feyenoord last season. Still just 19, he should have a big future. Currently linked with Real Madrid – following links to all the Champions League royalty clubs in the past 18 months. He’s all set up for a top career and could be a brilliant long-term signing. However, I suspect a right flank of Read and Dibling (talented though it would be) would be too immature initially and too big a risk. As per Huescas, if only we had a more established right-back as a stop-gap… Fisher: 21-year-old at Norwich. 0 goals and 0 assists in 8 games. Linked over summer. Not sure if he is really ready for Premier League football. Doubt he’d get in the first XI for a single other Premier League club and would possibly remain behind Garner and O’Brien for this position – which doesn’t really take us forward. Others: There are probably about 25 or so other very credible right-back options for us – good players with some pace and quality who would be available at modest price (i.e. up to around £25m). I’m not going to list all them. Reader Comments (38) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer () Mike Gaynes 1 Posted 19/10/2025 at 18:06:32 Robert, of course we need a right back at some point, but the one alternative I strongly oppose is what you call the "very credible" version. We tried to spend £25m for Kenny Tete and James Justin, and fortunately failed, because neither would have made us better. Sitting either Jake or Keane to make room for Tete would have weakened our backline, not strengthened it. In my view we need both a right back who could instantly change the look and feel of the team on the pitch and a youngster with high potential like Aznou who could be the long-term answer. (The only one I read about this summer who was in the former category was Juanlu Sanchez, and both Tuttomercado and Gazzetta dello Sport report that he already agreed terms with Napoli.) I just don't see our management spending for that in January. The need is obvious, but not urgent in their view. Moyes clearly believes in Jake, and Coleman and Patterson seem to be considered adequate cover. I doubt we'll see buying activity until next summer, so the only possible route in January would be a loan -- your two short-term options for starters. As always, your research is appreciated. Rob Dolby 2 Posted 19/10/2025 at 23:40:38 Rober,t the right-back answer could be under our noses. We have healthy competition for the centre-midfield places with Gana, Iroegbunam, Röhl, Dewsbury-Hall, Alcaraz, Armstrong and Garner.Garner has great delivery, is calm on the ball, and has a great engine. I would have no hesitation in starting Garner at right-back, I think he has all the qualities we are missing. Si Cooper 3 Posted 19/10/2025 at 23:48:29 Sorry Mike G, but I'm not sure Tete wouldn't have improved us or would have weakened us.Despite his better form this season, I'd still bench Michael Keane (or James Tarkowski) in a heartbeat if I could replace him with someone better. I think Jake O'Brien has that potential and his development as a centre-back is not necessarily helped by having to cover the right-back position.Tete was moving on a free, wasn't he? Where does the quoted £25M come from? The few occasions I've seen Mazraoui, all I've really noticed are his flaws.Rob, Garner is okay but not outstanding in the position and I think there must be better full-backs out there somewhere. Sam Hoare 4 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:27:40 Young lad at Preston has been doing well playing at right-back despite being nominally left-footed. Quick, agile and gets up and down the flank all day long. Only 21 but one of the best young full-backs in the division so far. Goes by the name Thierry Small. Ajay Gopal 5 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:30:48 Rob, (2) I agree with you. Garner is a very accomplished right-back, Lee Carsley used him in that position with great results for the England U-21s, I believe. And he gave an inspired performance in that relegation escape game against Bournemouth as a right-back. I would consider him as having the defensive capability of Tony Hibbert with a lot more ability in terms of crossing or dead-ball situations. Plus he has a great engine and can move up and down the flank all game, which is I think a prime requirement for that position. I think it is a brilliant idea, and Moyes should seriously consider it. In midfield, Gueye, Rohl, Iroegbunam and Dewsbury-Hall can compete for the 2 places. When everyone is fit:PickfordGarner Tarkowski Branthwaite MykolenkoGueye Dewsbury-HallDibling Alcaraz GrealishNdiayeSubs: Travers, Keane, O'Brien, Aznou, McNeil, Röhl, Iroegbunam, Beto, Barry. Ajay Gopal 6 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:37:51 Sam, there is a nice ex-Everton club forming there at Preston NE: Thierry Small, Lewis Dobbin, Lewis Gibson, Harrison Armstrong. They seem to be having a very decent season so far. Mike Doyle 7 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:43:31 Robert. Thanks for this - as always I'm very impressed by the amount of effort posters like yourself and Sam H put into identifying options.Out of interest, can we look forward to 'Centre-Forward watch: 2025' coming soon? Sam Hoare 8 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:47:18 Ajay, yes indeed! Definitely my favourite Championship team at the moment. Danny O'Neill 9 Posted 20/10/2025 at 10:53:27 Let's not beat around the square pegs in round hole bush. We are playing with make-shift right-backs.I said a few years ago, Matty Cash... but we missed that one. Being a local to where I live, I watched his football development through his teens. You could see then. Brian Harrison 10 Posted 20/10/2025 at 11:04:19 While we need a right-back with pace, we desperately need a striker as well. But for me the most worrying thing is, in about 7 weeks, both Ndiaye and Gana will leave to join the Senegal team for the Afcon. They could be missing for 6 weeks including the busy Xmas period when games come thick and fast. I know Beto now plays for Guinea-Bissau but I don't think they have qualified for the Afcon. Andrew Ellams 11 Posted 20/10/2025 at 11:18:42 Brian, no Beto will not be off to Afcon. But young Aznou may well be with Morocco which is another space on the bench to fill during a busy fixture period. Robert Tressell 12 Posted 20/10/2025 at 12:03:15 I can do a centre forward watch - unless Sam beats me to it (!)I doubt we'll get one in January but there's a good chance we upgrade Beto in summer. RB seems a possibility for January though -- especially the loan options. As we've seen over the years, you don't always need a brilliant player to make a difference -- so a square peg in a square hole like Mazraoui might be underwhelming but still pretty good. John Ballinger 13 Posted 20/10/2025 at 14:29:13 Agree with Rob 2. I'd have Garner at right-back, O'Brien, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, and Keane competing for two centre-back positions. Midfield could then be two of Gueye, Röhl, Iroegbunam, Alcaraz. Also, I'd like to see Beto and Barry dropped and use Ndiaye as a false 9, making a place for Dibling in the front-line. Mal van Schaick 14 Posted 21/10/2025 at 12:45:43 Terry Devlin, Portsmouth. 21-year-old, good stats, and we would probably get him for a million. Robert Tressell 15 Posted 21/10/2025 at 14:44:09 I'd never heard of him, Mal, until you mentioned. Having checked, he has terrible stats.Since we now appear to have both rich and competent owners for the first time in our Premier League history, I am hoping we can just do what other clubs do and buy genuinely good players. They might not be expensive £70M plus signings but hopefully we will see a lot more moderately priced £40M-ish players and fewer low-cost sub-£25M players (except excellent development players). We're becoming a big club again. Jay Harris 16 Posted 21/10/2025 at 15:24:21 Robert,I have watched Kellen Fisher in a couple of games this season and have been very impressed. He looks calm and assured in his passing, movement and defending. II would take him in a heartbeat, especially with Ndiaye or Dibling just in front of him.The link-up play would be a joy to watch. Robert Tressell 17 Posted 21/10/2025 at 15:57:41 Jay - I'm judging Fisher off 1 game, a few highlights and some stats. Your judgement is much better informed! The right-back slot is possibly even more essential to sort out now that Branthwaite is out longer term and O'Brien's mobility is sorely required at centre-back. Here's something to ponder: Would the squad be in better shape overall had we sold Branthwaite for circa £65M or £70M last summer? Rob Dolby 18 Posted 21/10/2025 at 16:50:11 Robert 17,The only way we should sell Branthwaite is if he insists on leaving. I don't believe in selling the best players to strengthen the squad.Danny 9,Wasn't Cash a converted winger whilst at Forest?Gary Stevens converted midfielder to right-back.Ian Snodin converted centre-mid to right-back.Without labouring the point too much, I do think Garner could be a top-class full-back. Conor McCourt 19 Posted 21/10/2025 at 18:04:29 I enjoyed reading through this. Thanks, Robert.I do however feel differently about the right-back situation and agree with Mike that both the manager and club don't feel it's an absolute priority.Firstly, it would be difficult to get one to improve us. Moyes has Garner and O'Brien for the role, plus we have 2 others in Coleman and Patterson on the payroll.Mazraoui is a good shout because he could come in instantly and is at the level to make it worthwhile, letting Jimmy concentrate on making the Number 6 position his own. The downside is that he has a history of injuries so, with heavy wages, it would be a big commitment. Also, I think they still need him. By the time the window will be open, hopefully Jarrad will be back, so it wouldn't surprise me if Garner will solve this role by default as I originally thought he would do so by design. Much will depend on Röhl.One surprise absentee (and perhaps there is a reason?) is Doue of Strasbourg. I watched the game against PSG the other night and he looks a talent. Totally different player to his famous sibling but I was really impressed with him (and their manager), all the same. Looks like a complete modern full-back and, on that performance, like he could be the long needed heir to Seamus. Jay Harris 20 Posted 21/10/2025 at 19:40:58 My feeling is it is a priority as full-back has become one of the most important positions in the modern game.Just look at the difference Kyle Walker made to Man City, Julien Timber to Arsenal, and I hate to say it, Alexander-Arnold to the other shower. Jay Harris 21 Posted 21/10/2025 at 19:43:35 Just wish we had got Denzil Dumfries when he was going or even Wan-Bissaka. Denver Daniels 22 Posted 21/10/2025 at 21:17:16 Why is Patterson still here? Did he turn down a move in the summer? He's an actual right-back but 4th choice behind a midfielder, a centre-back and a 37-year-old. If Moyes rated him at all, surely he'd be ahead of at least 2 of those. Is he just going to see the rest of his contract out from the bench? What a waste of a career. Mike Gaynes 23 Posted 22/10/2025 at 03:28:23 Dumfries is another stain left on this club by Benitez. Brands reportedly had a £13M deal in place, but Benitez wasn't convinced and Dumfries went to Inter instead. I watched him again today... what a player he has become. He would have changed the course of this club. Danny O'Neill 24 Posted 22/10/2025 at 06:49:54 Dumfries would have been a great signing.I suspect, though, he always had his eye on, and was holding out for, a big European move. Ian Bennett 25 Posted 22/10/2025 at 06:55:12 If we signed Dumfries or Gabriel, neither would still be here now. Instead, we bought very poorly in Patterson and Godfrey. Robert Tressell 26 Posted 22/10/2025 at 08:33:10 I think Moyes or the club decided in summer that they might fix the right-back position on the cheap (Coufal, Tete or Walker-Peters on a free) and if not, they would manage with a square peg in a round hole. However, we can all see that the shape isn't working as fluidly as it did when Moyes first turned up. This is because of the absence of Branthwaite and because opposition teams have figured out how O'Brien operates as a right-back.Priorities may now have changed -- who knows? As for Doue, I agree he'd be a good signing. I am not sure we could get him for less than my arbitrary ceiling of £25M though due to Strasbourg being a pretty wealthy sister club of Chelsea. They are commanding big fees for their players now. I was genuinely surprised when Bakwa (who Sam H sensibly pointed out as a good option) ended going for much the same price as Dibling. Like I say there are probably about 25 other genuine options. Danny O'Neill 27 Posted 22/10/2025 at 08:41:56 I'd agree with you on the cheap label, Robert. I actually think we tried to go cheap with no outlay. Keep O'Brien in the right-back position and play two from Tarkowski, Branthwaite and Keane. Kunal Desai 28 Posted 22/10/2025 at 09:16:58 Right-back has to be a priority in January. Hopefully we can bring in someone on loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer. One or two loans are likely to be the only feasible options in what is a very difficult window to do business in. Michael Kenrick 29 Posted 22/10/2025 at 09:42:58 Not Branthwaite, Danny. Not for a long while, sadly. Brian Harrison 30 Posted 22/10/2025 at 10:08:04 This highlights the problem of why was Seamus given an extended playing contract. We all love Seamus, he has been brilliant all the time he has been here, but wouldn't he be better used coaching the youngsters? Yes, we need a pacey full-back but for me we need a striker way more than we need a full-back. Conor McCourt 31 Posted 22/10/2025 at 11:44:17 Fair enough Robert. I thought you may have identified a weakness in his game or that he had been lined up somewhere else as his stats suggest that the performance the other night is a regular occurrence for the player.I would suggest Robert that had we signed Tete or Coufal I don't think they would have played much. Moyes played Lescott over Baines and even the likes of Pep has preferred Ake and Gvardiol over specialist full backs over recent seasons and won titles doing so.Moyes will have wanted to improve us as an attacking threat but more importantly have done so without sacrificing the defensive structure of the team.i think he is still perfectly happy with Jake there and only through Jarrads injury that this may change.I understand why you have limited your search but I feel that won't necessarily be a barrier when we do address the right back situation which I feel will be during the summer (all going to plan with Jarrads recovery).Last window we had so much to do with a limited budget to do it. I suspect our future spending will be aimed at 4 or 5 players with a few outgoings and if we do identify the right quality then £30 or £35 million won't be unworkable. Robert Tressell 32 Posted 22/10/2025 at 12:05:33 ps: Danny really good to see you posting again. Hope all is well. Your personality is a good influence on this site. Mike Doyle 33 Posted 22/10/2025 at 12:31:46 Robert, When you post your 'Centre-forward watch: 2025' list will you be including a cheeky loan move for Richarlison -- who seems to be fit again but back on the bench at Spurs? Robert Tressell 34 Posted 22/10/2025 at 12:33:17 Hell be in the “by popular demand” section, Mike Michael Kenrick 35 Posted 22/10/2025 at 21:40:13 Good one, Sam @4.For who don't recall, this is what was said at the time:Speaking after the fact, David Unsworth stressed that Everton did everything they could to keep hold of the starlet, but ultimately it was his decision to move on to pastures new. “In fairness to the club, we did everything we possibly could [to keep him]”, Unsworth told the Liverpool Echo. “We made him an unbelievable offer; we didn't want him to leave.“We never envisaged it coming. Up until he actually did leave, we fought really hard to keep him. But, when a player doesn't want to be at your club, it's very difficult to try and keep him. He's got his way, and that's usually the case these days.” Mike Allison 36 Posted 25/10/2025 at 10:25:05 I'm coming round to the solution of Garner at right-back in the short term, especially in home games. I think Moyes keeps O'Brien in because of long throws and set piece threat so is willing to sacrifice some of the open play quality. We also then have Dewsbury-Hall, Rohl, Iroegbunam and Gana to fill two spots in deep midfield.Long term I'd like to know what Robert and others think of Brooke Norton-Cuffy. He's England U21 and Genoa; I've not seen much of him but he's looked quality when I have and I think he's probably affordable.Just spotted the mention of Thierry Small; as Michael alludes to, he screwed us over and is now a substitute in The Championship, so he's a non-starter for me. Robert Tressell 37 Posted 25/10/2025 at 11:09:24 Mike # 36, I've been doing articles (or at least comments) about right-backs for some time now. Brooke Norton-Cuffy is someone I mentioned a few times before when he was coming through at Arsenal. He's had the usual career trajectory for a modern academy player. As soon as he showed potential aged about 17 he was shipped out on a series of loans -- Lincoln, Rotherham, Coventry and Millwall -- where he did well alongside his regular appearances in the England youth set-up. I only ever saw him play live for England U20s where he was a good, pacy outlet on the right flank and an aggressive defender. He would have been an astute signing from Arsenal for the €2.00M Genoa paid at the start of last season -- and still only 21 has cemented himself in the starting XI, albeit for a team rooted to the bottom of Serie A under Patrick Vieira. He would be a good right-back to have as 2nd choice. And he might well start for us because of our problems at right-back. But I am not sure he would start for any other Premier League club. The fact is that we are not the Premier League's poorest club anymore. We shouldn't need to build up the squad on cheap scraps and should be hunting out genuine quality. Even Sunderland managed to get not one but two Champions League regular right-backs in Mukiele and Geertuida this summer. This puts Hulme (a player we have been repeatedly linked with as a step up on what we have) as Sunderland's third choice right-back.This is frankly ridiculous. Hopefully we bring in a player of the quality of, say, Sanchez or El-Hilali as well as someone at least of the standard of Norton-Cuffy as cover. Tony Abrahams 38 Posted 25/10/2025 at 11:20:08 I watched Norton-Cuffy a few times at Millwall, mostly coming off the bench, and he used to do okay.He also came on a few times in the summer for England Under-21s, when they defended their European title. I thought he gave a good account of himself in those games. He reminded me of another Arsenal product, Iwobi, although I think Iwobi is possibly better on the ball whereas Norton-Cuffy probably has a little bit more pace.
