Everton Season Review, 2000-01

Season Review, 2000-01

The third season of underachievement under Water Smith.  Where to now?.

 SEASON REVIEW

I think (questionable poll results aside) that Evertonians by and large believe season 4 under W.S. as a bridge way too far (although, as I posted earlier, apathy rules the day). It's not just the constant crick in the neck staring up the table at clubs with no pedigree to speak of but also the feeling that the team, with Smith at the helm, is incapable of expressing itself - a result of inconsistency in team selection and game-to-game tactics which predates the much (very much!) talked about injury-crisis. There's a sense now, IMO, that one-step-forward and two-steps-backward is built into the fabric of Smith's tenure as club manager. This lack of confidence in the manager from supporters mirrors the lack of respect you identify amongst the pro.s at the club. I take your point about the loss of Dacourt and Materazzi and other players which was out of Smith's hands and also your point about a spell in season 2 when things looked as though they were coming good. Smith is obviously not the worst manager in the world (it's never been my assertion that he is) but his overall performance at G.P. leaves a lot to be desired. At the risk of labouring the point, I just get the feeling now that enough is enough and W.S. should be made to stand aside. Kenwright, however, will have the final say on that one and I fear that the great/grate communicator is suitably out of touch with the clubs supporters to let Walter see out his contract.

Walters post match comments yesterday were a laugh to be perfectly honest and sum up exactly why I dislike him "Our season is to be expected after the problems we have had, no other club have had the problems we have had" OK we've had a few injury problems but it wouldn't have taken Mystic Meg to call that one, Gazza,Ferguson and Pistone are hardly the three most reliable players in British football, basing your defence around a 39 year old is hardly a recipe for success either is it, 10 odd starts for a million quid a year, no wonder hes in no hurry back to America. The thing about Walter is that theres always something to blame for the shortcomings of his side, in his first two years he consistently said that it would take two full years before he could say that the side was his, now in the magical third year, its been the devastating injury list which had hampered the progress that his forward thinking and tactical genius would surely have provided. He is as they would say in this part of the world a "spoofer" and no doubt about it we'll get caught out by the Nationwide trap door very soon unless something is done. He is ruining this club for me, I have less enthusiam for Everton now than at any other stage of my life, Billy Boy thinks the sun shines out of his arse so we are stuck with him unless Ibrox comes calling in some capacity, don't worry though cause if they do he'll be back up the road before you can say "the sash my father wore", Walter please do us all a favour and leave now, if not expect Rodney Wallace, Vidmar and probably Daniel Prodan as our three "big" signings this year, Fulham and Blackburn will certainly be better than the sides going down so if everyone thought this year was a struggle it'll be a picnic compared to next. What a depressing thought!

 ALL CHANGE!

*Rubbish, yes well ok, we are that...... *But I've seen us beat Arsenal and Chelsea at home..... *I've seen possibly the greatest act of sportsmanship I ever witnessed, when Di Canio caught the ball..... *I've seen the cockiest piece of skill I've ever witnessed from an Everton player (sadly too young to see Alex Young), when Gazza strolled between two players at Leicester then immediately thrust his arm in the air to acknowledge it..... *And now I've seen a frustrated fan offer to swap shirts with Alex Nyarko, surely one of the most gutless performers ever to have claimed to "play" for Everton.
