Picking up a bargain in the January sales
04/12/07

David Moyes: Has an eye for a bargain which he may need again in January

When the festive season has passed and we can no longer face the turkey left-overs, the same old stories from grandparents and the disappointment of getting socks once again, the shops will all reopen, trying to lure us in with special offers and sales; if only we’d waited an extra fortnight before buying the widescreen tv.

There are only a few who will visit the more expensive boutiques with their credit cards — the Portuguese Playboy and his Russian Sugar-Daddy, or Lord Ferg and his rich uncles, so long as they don’t leave a horses head in his fridge. For the rest, fingering their way through the bright shiny goods on gold lined shelves is just a dream. Maybe they can borrow an item that is taking up valuable space for a few months, but inevitably they will get laughed away when they wish to buy - they can only window-shop and will be pointed in the direction of Poundland to see what bargains can be picked up.

Lets not scoff though, bargains can be found. Last year David Moyes picked up a real steal – a second-hand Nigel Martyn who had been gathering dust on the shelves at Leeds Bargain Basement, having been overlooked in favour of Neighbours business tycoon Paul Robinson. Indeed many people profited from the Leeds “Everything Must Go” sale, boasting “Crazy Prices cant last” and in some cases “Buy one get one free” – well everyone benefited that is except Leeds.

If rumours are to be believed then David will be given 10million pounds worth of footballer gift tokens by Uncle Bill this Christmas. So where should he spend it?

The long established luxury German boutique “Borussia’s of Dortmund” are currently in a spot of financial trouble – 120million Euros worth of trouble at the last count. They are up a similar s**t creek as Leeds, albeit a German one. I would certainly be looking to pick up a cut-price Czech international Tomas Rosicky if I had the means. In a mood of caution however, the last thing we want is to pick up a bargain and then find that the goods have passed their best before date – especially in sales where returns can not be given, even with a receipt. In a season where a world-class player has not been performing, in fact the whole team is failing to perform and the owners are unable to pay the staff wages – offloads seem inevitable and it would be great to see David and Uncle Bill benefit from the situation.

Like the Alba stereo in the Dixon’s sale, don’t just buy something because it is cheap. Bargains can be found in the January sales, it’s all about looking in the right places.
