Gravesen – Garbage or Gold – Get over it…
2005/01/15

Thomas Gravesen: more garbage than gold during his time at Everton?

I’ve said it once or thrice before, and I’ll labour to repeat myself. If you don’t want to play for Everton FC then quite frankly I am not in the least bit concerned about what it is that you want to do, or where you want to do it.

On the whole Thomas Gravesen has been garbage rather than gold. Sure this season he has played to a level that comes close to his performances for Denmark, but he has never reached in Blue the levels he did at the World Cup nor indeed at Euro 2004. I was happy to see him perform at the level his wages suggest, and I have always admired the effort he put in when his mind was on the task at hand.

Smith signed him and consistently played him as a midfield enforcer, which is where his erratic form verged on the truly beguiling. Now this site has written a better article than I could write on the ups and downs of his career, but I wish to raise another point, and that is I do believe Madrid have signed the wrong player, as a holding midfielder in the ilk of Makelele he is not – Carsley is the one they should have signed.

But on to what Moyes should do now that the media are trumpeting with glee that our most creative player has left us for a European Superpower. Sound familiar?

I would like to congratulate those of you who far from lamenting the shameful lack of loyalty nor indeed professional pride in taking a team written off and onto the fringes of Champions League football, but who see the sale of Gravesen as what it really signifies. Corporate business. Moyes is going to have to react to this situation in exactly the same way as when Mr. Rooney left. This should bond the players even more.

We are not one player down, remember we signed Beattie – who by the way has and will score far more goals than Gravesen ever did or could have. I also believe that Osman is more naturally gifted than Gravesen, and so I say to you all – forget Gravesen, I don’t begrudge the man for being blinded by the bright lights of Madrid, good for him, I am sure he will forget that it was his time at Everton that put him into the spotlight.

Moyes will move in the market when the time is right, whether it be Tonge, Faye, Parker, Van Bommel, Petrov, Savage – or even a whole string of surprise buys, Moyes will reinforce the team, but the loss of Gravesen does not worry me in the slightest. Toffeeweb’s assessment of him was too positive in my mind, to the list of AWOL games I would like to add Chelsea, as he was invisible there as well – whereas Carsley, Cahill, Osman and Kilbane ran their guts out.

So he’s gone – more garbage than gold. The real question is, where is the Fortress Sports Fund money Bill?
