Story of the blues
26 April 2006

Here in my pocket, I've got the story of the blues,
Try to believe me cos' it could be front-page news.

We could have been a contender, but we're a bum. We are Rocky getting a result against Apollo Creed, La Motta not going down against Suger Ray. We are two-nil down against the Owls; we are the poor brothers on Merseyside... We don't win European cups but we have on occasion won the FA Cup — every 25 years on average. We may sneak an FA Cup by one goal or two and ONCE win a Euro cup of course... But here's the good part: "I WOULD NOT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY"

Think of Christmas; you wake up, you know the gifts are there. You always wanted your bike, your Endor Playset, your snake-eyed action man, so you open the pressies and its a fucking SMURF! Then another... and another... and you hate it, you want more but all you get are smurfs. You want to burn the little buggers as you want so much more... but you get a smurf.

Next year, you get a bit of cash; the year after, a little bit less. Next year, it's another smurf (National garage doing a great trade), 'til you're in your late teens and you're at Goodison Park and you realise, your mum and dad got you smurfs cos they are blue and white and that's all you went on about as a kid. You had a blue bulb in your bedroom, blue wallpaper, blue carpet and bloody smurfs everywhere and you think, I'm 33 now and my smurf days are behind me but I've got two sons, and by the love of god and eBay, they will get smurfs and they will come to Goodison. But no way will Papa smurf be there because he had red trousers; as much as I wanted him, my dad would never let me get him.

And you all know what happens next: every year or two, I'd love a blue surprise... And one day, smurfs will be back — and so will we. Be patient and we will rise from the ashes. It feels like we are in, 1933 won the FA cup, 1966 won it next, 1970 the league, 1985 next, and so on.

One day we will be back, but don't forget: we are above winning. We are the club that cares. Legends stay with us (Brian) and we don't care what the red shite say. When we next win something, hold it; keep it warm and think about it when you go to sleep. I often wake up with a smile on my face seeing Brian, Kev and Dave with the Cup then think who is next cos there will be more, just give it time

Well I find myself in reverie
bout what we might have had
And what might have been

We had something going once
That was such a long, long time ago
