Season › 2012-13 › News What next for David Moyes? Lyndon Lloyd , 10 March, 28comments | Jump to most recent Phil McNulty ponders Moyes's future after one of the most abject displays of his tenure saw Everton crash out of the FA Cup to Wigan Athletic. The intrigue surrounds how Moyes will react to such a setback. He has done much fine work at Goodison Park but there has been a simmering unsettled mood in recent weeks alongside the uncertainty over his contract. A chance had opened up for Everton in this season's FA Cup but it was squandered quite spectacularly - and how Goodison Park, or at least those supporters still inside a rapidly deserting stadium at the final whistle, let Moyes and his players know it. » Read the full article at BBC Sport Reader Comments (28) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Amit Vithlani 2 Posted 10/03/2013 at 08:30:55 Hopefully, what's next is that he does the decent thing and hands in his notice. We start planning for a post-DM era now, in terms of searching for a manager and jettisoning a few of the tired old legs. Mick Wrende 3 Posted 10/03/2013 at 09:41:20 What makes me smile is the media report Moyes' future as though it is his decision to make. Another display like yesterday with constant booing and a near empty ground at the finish and even the most stupid employers wont endure that. On your bike Moyes the loser and thanks for nothing. Steve Guy 4 Posted 10/03/2013 at 09:51:27 This should have been titled "What next for Everton". As has been typical of the reporting around DM and his contract, the imjplication is that it is wholly his decision to stay or go. It's not, it's the Club's and to some degree the supporters and their tolerance of appalling displays such as yesterday. James McGarry 5 Posted 10/03/2013 at 09:50:21 Three goals in 3 spectacular minutes and he looked out of his depth against a poor Wigan team who were hammered by the Shite the week before. Only one way Moyes can go now and that's out the back door as soon as possible. He was fucking clueless when they scored and couldn't see players walking around like they were on their summer fucking holidays. Neville, Fellaini and Osman were a fucking joke — POOR is putting it mildly — they were a disgrace to the club and supporters. Fuck off now Moyes and take that so called Mr Everton Kenwright with you. Gareth Fieldstead 6 Posted 10/03/2013 at 11:29:55 Sorry Mick and Steve, but do you honestly think the fans will have any say on whether Moyes stays or leaves? He has a job for life if he wants it, it is solely up to him. Short of taking us down or attendances returning to below 20,000, neither of which will happen, Kenwright will never sack him. The club will witness a lot of changes in May noticeably the playing staff, it will be up to Moyes to decide if he can be bothered to start again and try and build a fourth team. Personally I think he is refusing to sign to see if clubs will want to have him without having to pay Everton compensation. I think it is already obvious that they don't as the matter of a few million quid will not put a top club off signing him. Sadly we are stuck with him. Andy Parsons 7 Posted 10/03/2013 at 11:36:44 Given that we're still sixth in the league and two points off fifth place, where is this idea that the season is over coming from? It's far from over. Fifth is still very much up for grabs, but it's the negativity of supporters that will pull us back. Yesterday was terrible, but it's gone... let's move on. If we're going to let one defeat wreck the season, one where we have lost ONE league game at Goodison all season. That's the same as United and City. Some of the comments aimed at the players, both on Twitter and elsewhere, have been as classless as any I've ever seen. In fact, I'm ashamed to say I'm an Evertonian given some of the things I've seen and read. We all care, we all want the club to win something, but some people need to get a grip. Finally, Moyes has taken us as far as Kenwright will allow us to go. We knew what we needed in January and he failed us... again. If anyone thinks a new manager is going to change anything, it won't. Michael Winstanley 8 Posted 10/03/2013 at 11:41:37 Worse case scenario Gareth, Moyes signs for another five years. Kieran Fitzgerald 9 Posted 10/03/2013 at 11:43:32 Lyndon, read John Nicholson's article on football365 from February 27th. There are more and more articles in the media that actually have a sense of realism to them about Moyes.Somehow, I don't think we will see the usual shit being written this week about how he has no money and about how he is brilliant for achieving all he has at Everton. Andy, I think that the negativity of supporters is symptomatic of what we have been seeing on and off the pitch for months now, not the other way round. Also, I don't think it is just a case of Moyes having no money. A lack of a transfer fund does not limit a manager's ability to have more than one set of tactics, or to make a timely substitution. Yes, it makes it harder, but Moyes is that conservative that much of what is happening at present is as much his own fault as that of the Board's. Ian Bennett 10 Posted 10/03/2013 at 12:06:20 Perhaps him playing Neville was his way of proving a point over fer. Whatever, it was a terrible performance from Neville. The back pass, red card challenge, and comedy ball out for a throw in on the bullens road side has hopefully nailed that coffin. Andy Parsons 11 Posted 10/03/2013 at 13:07:42 @Kieran Fitzgerald I'd love to see this team win a trophy as much as anyone, but the reality is we are sixth in the toughest league in the world where money dictates everything. A team that has lost one game at home in the league all season. Since Christmas, we've not been as good as in the first half of the season but I wasn't the only predicting that when we did no business in January. Precisely for the same reason that our business in January last year gave us a boost in the second half of the campaign, it was totally inevitable that the reverse would happen this time around. I'm not one of those who looks at the positive all the time by any means and I know I'm daring not to jump on the bandwagon so run the risk of being shouted down by some wave of hysterical Blues still reeling from the result, but the reality is we're a team that had one bad day yesterday when everyone was mis-placing passes and everyone was lacklustre. Every single player. It happens. Kieran Fitzgerald 12 Posted 10/03/2013 at 13:44:58 Andy, I don't think you are one for dramatics or for being overly positive. You are right not to give in to complete pessimism. But I just think that many of us rightly feel that yesterday wasn't just a one off. You are right though when you say that the January transfer window was poor and I would agree with anyone who says that this did have an influence on shaping our season. Yes this was solely down to the board and it has hamstrung Moyes as the season has gone on. For me though, Moyes does need to take a lot of the criticism that is being levelled at him, both by fans and by the media at present in some articles. Dave Charles 13 Posted 10/03/2013 at 13:56:25 I've just heard Ray Parlour (Ex Arsenal) on talksport say that David Moyes should sign a new contract as that is what the fans want. Behave Ray will yer. Eric Myles 14 Posted 10/03/2013 at 13:59:01 Andy #424, the bigger problem is that those misplaced passes haven't just happened all of a sudden and in this last game. They've been a symptom of our poor play for a while now so how come professional footballers can't pass the ball around any better than me gran and grandad having a kick about in the back garden? And why hasn't the manager sorted it out already? Gavin Ramejkis 15 Posted 10/03/2013 at 14:54:08 I'm quite amused at the thought of Gollum holding out for a cushy job in the Bundesliga. As a fan of Germany I can tell you he'll be frog marched out of that league smartish for his disrespect to youth players and avoidance at all costs of playing them and pushing tired hasbeens out instead. The Germans simply won't stand it, look at how their view on developing youth has paid dividends in the national side. He's a one trick pony whose long odds game at looking not to lose games rather than go out to win them is soul destroying, wow look at all those draws over a season - no thanks you can stick his tired shite and send him packing, I really don't care where he goes, it won't be a better free ride than he's had for the last 11 years. Andy Parsons 16 Posted 10/03/2013 at 14:53:25 In my experience, players start misplacing passes and become careless with the ball when they are tired - not just physically, but also mentally. Moyes isn't blameless - Neville should never have replaced Gibson and why we weren't playing the passing game that we did against Reading, I have no idea. But at the same time, you can't legislate against the players making the amount of mistakes they did yesterday. Dave Charles 17 Posted 10/03/2013 at 15:21:40 Q Dave Charles 18 Posted 10/03/2013 at 15:21:40 Q Eugene Ruane 20 Posted 10/03/2013 at 15:35:30 With my luck? Kenwright offering (and Moyes signing) a new 5 year deal at 4 mill a year.(many a true word spoken in jest) Ian Bennett 21 Posted 10/03/2013 at 15:37:07 A long holiday and a spell on Soccer Saturday. Next. Colin Wainwright 22 Posted 10/03/2013 at 15:43:37 I think with Rangers still a few years from top flight football, Neil Lennon's job is safe, for now but Celtic is where he'll end up. Fuck knows how their fans will put up with derby capitulations. Actually, I know full well and so does he. Sean Flatley 23 Posted 10/03/2013 at 16:02:45 I have now been a season ticket holder for 10 years (since I was 5) and I must admit yesterday's performance was an utter shambles, possibly the worst I have seen the team play ever. There was no desire, no cutting edge, absolutely nothing coming through midfield but most importantly no drive to win! Not of the players then stepped foot on that pitch yesterday played well. Dismal. However, I have an inkling that next week against Man City we will come out and play football and possibly win the game. This for me is a huge problem at Everton, particularly in these past few seasons. We are amazingly inconsistent: one week we will play well, like against Reading, the next week we'll play shite, like yesterday. It seems that when teams like Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham etc come to Goodison Park and play attacking football and pass it around well, it seems that we can put in a top performance. But when teams that are around us or even below us in the league come and play against us, we simply fall apart. This is a major problem, and a problem that is caused by Moyes. He is not a great tactician, he doesn't know how to break down the lesser teams, he doesn't know how to do it! He needs to take a long hard look at himself and either needs to realise we have to start being consistent if we want to challenge or he need's to leave. Kunal Desai 24 Posted 10/03/2013 at 16:44:36 Love how the expectations from some of our fans have been lowered - Start of the season it was 4th and a trophy and now it's 5th, in the next couple of weeks some will be saying a top 8 finish will be a decent season. Mind boggles. Barry Rathbone 25 Posted 10/03/2013 at 16:58:22 p45 Ray Said 26 Posted 10/03/2013 at 17:00:11 Magnum.357? Harold Matthews 27 Posted 10/03/2013 at 19:35:51 Ian. He would be an embarrassment on Soccer Saturday. His lack of real football knowledge comes across loud and clear each time he appears as guest pundit. Frida Ericsson 28 Posted 10/03/2013 at 20:19:32 every match between now and the end of the season, we the fans need to let the ginger one know very loudly, his time is up, we don't want him. I couldn't bare another 3 years under this clown. Colin Glassar 29 Posted 10/03/2013 at 20:23:49 Oldham are looking for a new manager.
