Season › 2012-13 › News Coleman: City saw the 'real' Everton Lyndon Lloyd , 19 March, 13comments | Jump to most recent Seamus Coleman says that the determined performance that overcame Manchester City just seven days after the horror show against Wigan in the FA Cup showed what the "real Everton" is all about. David Moyes and his players needed a big performance in response to their season's nadir against the Latics and they delivered an emphatic display that effectively ended the Champions' defence of their Premier League title and represented partial redemption at the very least for the previous weekend. “I think we showed what we are all about,” the Irishman said. “That wasn't an Everton team against Wigan — we just didn't turn up. “Going down to 10 men, we kept working hard for each other. We are all mates here and that showed.” “It was utterly disappointing to go out of the FA Cup,” added Coleman, who was many people's Man of the Match against City. “The manager got us on it this week and we went out there and we tried to repay the fans as much as we could. I think we did that." The win lifted the Blues back into sixth place in the table and keeps them within two points of Arsenal in fifth and Coleman's fellow defender, John Heitinga, says that the team is viewing each of their nine remaining games as must-win matches as they chase a European berth. "The way I see it now is that we have to play nine finals," Heitinga is quoted by evertonfc.com. "I want to go and play with Everton in Europe. "We have nine finals, and we must see it game by game. The squad is really strong, and the focus must only be on the next game." But please, please say all this at the end of the season when we have won or lost these games. Lets hope his words do not come back to bite him a week on Saturday. Paul Smith 2 Posted 19/03/2013 at 18:42:29 Call me cynical but how many times have we heard this? I know the players give interviews and have to big the club up. However beating Shitty 2 nil with ten men is fantastic but displays like Saturday, are all too rare, for it to be the real Everton. Phil Sammon 3 Posted 19/03/2013 at 19:06:49 FrankThey HAVE to do interviews for various media outlets as part of their contracts. What do you want? Absolute silence from the club between August and May?Lay off them. Patrick Murphy 4 Posted 19/03/2013 at 19:14:11 I must admit Johnny's comment that we must only focus on the next game might suggest that some of the staff have been guilty of not adhering to that tried and tested footballing strategy for example keeping Gibson on the bench whilst playing Neville for the cup match with Wigan. Frank Duffy 6 Posted 19/03/2013 at 20:02:37 PhilToo many of the players talk a good game but do they produce on the pitch?Maybe the Directors should say a bit more - silence!!! Phil Sammon 7 Posted 19/03/2013 at 20:43:04 FrankYes, they produced on the pitch. They have to do it and he's just said exactly what you'd expect. How can you get your knickers in a twist over this?! Lee Browne 8 Posted 19/03/2013 at 20:05:07 They played boss on Saturday... shame they couldn't do that against Wigan? Frank Duffy 10 Posted 19/03/2013 at 22:40:19 My Phil you must have got out of the wrong side of the bed. If you think the comments from Neville and his performance in many recent games are ok then fine. I don't. Ciaran Duff 11 Posted 19/03/2013 at 22:41:32 We can all be cynical and maybe with justification. The 24 news cycle demands that clubs produce some inane "news" for the fans. However, I do get the feeling that the Wigan and Man City experiences have genuinely affected the players. I think that they were under no illusions about how the fans felt after Wigan and the performance in the City game was, in my opinion, a fantastic effort based on a "pay back" to the fans. The key from now on will be whether we can sustain that and psych ourselves up for the remaining games. That is why I think JH's comments are very apt:-"Before [the Man City game], I told myself we had 10 finals, and now we have nine left. I want to go and play with Everton in Europe."I think that the team AND the fans need to treat every game as a final from now on. Phil Sammon 12 Posted 20/03/2013 at 06:31:25 Where did I say that, Frank? Or are you making things up? Brendan McLaughlin 13 Posted 20/03/2013 at 23:02:33 Seriously Patrick (#711):Johnny utters one of the most meaningless cliches in football ever and suddenly after years of players trotting it out... this time there really is a message? Alan Ross 14 Posted 21/03/2013 at 18:01:34 "City saw the Real Everton"Must have been in the stands during the Wigan game. They would have to have witnessed both games, surely.Everton have been Bi-Polar in the last 3 months to a degree.Their last 2 matches were the extremes. Ludicrously bad and Fantastically brilliant. What will be served up next? Mark Frere 15 Posted 21/03/2013 at 19:02:54 I'm not sure that was really the real Everton... I mean we actually held on to a lead, kept a clean sheet, and looked solid. We can't say that very much this season. The Everton team this season is the most fragile I've ever seen it in Moyes's time here. Yes, we've played some nice football at times, but we've lacked that killer instinct in front of goal and been unable to see games out. What has happened to all the clean sheets we used to get in previous seasons?
