I sincerely hope that is not the case. He looks a very good prospect and while a loan will be good for him, I hope he stays with us and gets a game. Ian Bennett 2 Posted 20/03/2013 at 22:12:34 I hope the lad plays well and is fighting for a place with us next season. Doncaster are top of the tree, so fingers crossed he can make the step up a league or two. James Flynn 3 Posted 20/03/2013 at 23:34:52 Seen Lundstram's name a time or 2, but have no clue.Who's seen him go thru a game? Not asking for a projection. He's a teen. Just, if you've seen him play, you're general impressions of him. Sam Hoare 4 Posted 21/03/2013 at 01:39:53 James, I've seen him once or twice. He looks a very composed and hard working box to box midfielder with good passing off both feet, a good shot on him and a good work ethic. Sort of a Scott Parker/ darron Gibson type player in my view with strong leadership potential (in fact I think he captains England u 19s).He's still quite young and I think if Doncaster get promoted, which looks likely, then he would be well served spending next season with them in the championship. Of course if he's really setting the world alight we could recall him but I reckon it's hard for lads under 20 to force their way into central midfield for the top premier teams. Paul Andrews 5 Posted 21/03/2013 at 06:21:38 Sam,your right it is hard for young players to start for the top premier teams.Because they cant start for the top premier teams, doesn't mean they could not still be given a game for us.Not talking about Lundstram specifically, just in general. Phil Sammon 6 Posted 21/03/2013 at 11:49:21 Are we not a top PL team in your eyes, Paul? He's certainly running the show at Doncaster according to their fans. I think the loan will do him good. The lad's a great prospect. Darron Gibson is probably a decent comparison – though Lundstram is a bit more dynamic in my opinion. Great shot with both feet and exceptional vision and passing ability, just like Gibbo. Him, Junior and Barkley are as good a CM trio as your gonna get at U21 level. Let's hope they are given a chance on the big stage... Paul Holden 7 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:01:34 Can anybody explain why so few Everton youngsters break into first team football? There must be something seriously wrong with the set up in my view as we train most of them up, and then offload them! Paul Andrews 8 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:14:07 Phil 987No Paul Andrews 9 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:14:35 Phil,Your right about Lundstram's ability, and as important, his will to win.An absolute diamond of a kid off the pitch as well. Graham Mockford 10 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:30:51 Paul (#008):It is pretty simple and not peculiar to Everton. The majority of Academy players are British born whereas the majority of PL players are not. It is a question of maths really. Although we always have a clamour for blooding youth on here have a look at the squads of the Top 6 teams in the PL and see how many U21 players you can find. What is encouraging however is that this current crop of youngsters is without doubt the best group we have had in ages. The U18s have an upcoming Youth Cup quarter final and the U21s are coming with a wet sail and look nailed on to make the end of season play offs. Reasons to be cheerful. James Flynn 11 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:35:23 Sam, Phil - Thanks for the info. I hate projecting teenagers, just too many variables, but it seems we have a few good young'uns in the system. Graham Mockford 12 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:39:07 Just to add a bit more to my last post here is the current England U21 squad ie the cream of young footballing talent in this country. Some cracking prospects in here. Amos, Butland, Rudd, Steele, Bennett, Caulker, Clyne, Dawson, Lees, Robinson, Rose, Shaw, Smith, Wisdom, Carroll, Chalobah, Henderson, Lansbury, Lowe, McEachran, Shelvey, Sterling, Townsend, Delfouneso, Ince, Sordell, Wickham, Zaha. How many are playing regular first team football for one of the Top 6 PL teams? Phil Sammon 13 Posted 21/03/2013 at 16:46:32 Fair point Graham. It's interesting there though, looking at that squad. Every player is either sat on a bench for a 'top club' or playing regularly for a lesser side. The theory being, lesser teams have a smaller squad and are more likely to give their youth a chance. They are then either bought and loaned back, or bought and sat on a bench – John Stones. My trouble with Everton is that although we are a big club, we have a core of 14 players that the manager will not look beyond. He'd sooner shoehorn a 36-year-old full back into midfield than give a teenager a go. Even in the last 15 minutes of games we get Naismith, Hitzlsperger and Heitinga instead of talented academy graduates who are chomping at the bit. These players need playing – particularly as we don't have the money to bring in ready made stars. They are our footballing future and our financial future and I don't think Moyes manages their development well enough. Sam Hoare 14 Posted 21/03/2013 at 17:07:16 Interesting that we have no players in the England U21 squad. We have a good few around the age of 16-19 but not that many corkers age 20-22. Bit of a gap in the assembly line? Mark Frere 15 Posted 21/03/2013 at 18:24:24 I would love to see some of our youngsters get more of a chance. Considering how poor the likes of Neville, Heitinga and Naismith have been, would Duffy, Barkley and Junior of fared any worse in their place? Paul Andrews 16 Posted 21/03/2013 at 19:43:08 Graham@020How many of them were being kept out of the side by a 36-year-old full back playing in midfield?Question applies to midfielders in the squad. Graham Mockford 17 Posted 21/03/2013 at 19:56:13 PaulOther than Caulker (a defender) none of them are playing for a Top 6 side on a regular basis. You remember that Top 6 side the full back playing in midfield has been an integral part. James Morgan 18 Posted 21/03/2013 at 20:00:44 Good point, Sam. Maybe if Barkley was getting game time he'd be in there, who knows? Is a bit strange we haven't got a single representative. Ian Bennett 19 Posted 21/03/2013 at 20:06:37 That U21 squad is bobbins. It's a bit like Scotland years ago, they used to have loads of good players. Now not so much. Paul Andrews 20 Posted 21/03/2013 at 20:55:43 Graham,What would you consider "an integral part" to be ?Please don't refer to " we get 1.67777 points with him in the team and 1.3555565 points with him not in the team. Barry Rathbone 21 Posted 21/03/2013 at 20:41:48 The lack of decent footballers coming through is almost universal in the UK leagues. It goes back to the 70s; it suddenly became a crime to be skillful in this country... flair players like Osgood, Hudson, Currie, Bowles, Worthington and loads more were treated as lepers by coaches looking to follow the "grafters" Liverpool model.Gordon Lee famously called such players "tanner bob ball players" and our last remaining link with pure skill (Duncan Mackenzie) was shipped out by him.Gradually the functional players who thrived from then on, have graduated to become the insipid coaches of today – Allardyce, McLeish, Moyes, Pulis etc.I imagine there's still kids with skill but they're treated like aliens in this country, particularly as clubs can buy in skill. Strikingly only Southampton have produced skillful academy players over any length of time and now Palace are doing the same – the common factor being they were bust and had no option. Andy Crooks 22 Posted 22/03/2013 at 00:51:24 Great post, Barry. Look again at your list of players beside the coaches you name. Flair, talent and non-conformity versus staid dullness. There is another way of putting it ,however. Lazy, don't give a fuck bastards versus model pros. Which side are you on?Actually, I've just found the definition of greatness, who fits both? Messi and Pele. Graham Mockford 23 Posted 22/03/2013 at 09:00:00 Paul,As in having played in most of the games. But don't worry – I get it: you think he is shit. Paul Andrews 24 Posted 22/03/2013 at 12:12:02 What, 'shit' as in "can't pass a ball 10 yards, cant run, mistimes every tackle and floats every cross either over the bar or into the keeper's arms"?He is good at shouting though so you may have a point. Graham Mockford 25 Posted 22/03/2013 at 14:20:29 Well PaulApart from being factually incorrect on all four points you make you might have a point. Paul Andrews 26 Posted 22/03/2013 at 15:15:33 Which four?I named six. Graham Mockford 27 Posted 22/03/2013 at 15:47:31 Paul I appreciate it was hyperbole but I think you will find he can pass a ball 10 yards, he definitely can run, he doesn't mistime every tackle nor does every cross go over the bar or to the keeper. Now if you had said he misplaces too many passes, is too slow, mistimes too many tackles and is generally a poor crosser of the ball you would have least had an argument you could stand behind. I'd would then have probably disagreed with you rather than being able to say you are definitely wrong. Unless of course the quotation marks indicate you were quoting somebody and then I could have disagreed with whoever said it.Hope that helps. Paul Andrews 28 Posted 22/03/2013 at 16:31:00 He is generally good at shouting, but not all the time. Graham Mockford 29 Posted 22/03/2013 at 16:44:34 Agreed!!
