Coleman plays as Ireland hold Sweden
Leighton Baines weighed in with three assists and Leon Osman made his competitive international debut as England walloped San Marino 8-0 this evening.

Baines was included in the Three Lions' starting XI and had a hand in three goals as England went in at half time 5-0 up. Osman was named among the substitutes by Roy Hodgson and replaced Tom Cleverly after 55 minutes to make his competitive debut for England.

Meanwhile, as his star continues to rise at Everton, Seamus Coleman was in action for the Republic of Ireland in Stockholm this evening for a Group C World Cup qualifier against Sweden that ended 0-0, a good result for the Irish in their bid to make Brazil next year.

Elsewhere, Marouane Fellaini started for Belgium in their 2-0 win over Macedonia (Kevin Mirallas was on the bench), Nikica Jelavic was an unused substitute for Croatia who beat Serbia 2-0 in Group A and Steven Naismith also failed to make the pitch as Scotland lost 2-1 at home to Wales.

Bainsey's having a blinder. He's worth at least £20m IMO. Come on Bainsey, get yerself a goal.

The most important thing is to score against San Marino.
Thank god for international football, its so much more important than domestic football, just ask our international manager.
Yes, I agree with you all, I also think we will win the next world cup, keep it all going, its so interesting isn't it??!!

Hardly a "thrashing", even in that shite game many years ago where the minnows of San Marino scored in 8 seconds against olde engerland that shower of turd still scored more than five in response.

Training exercise but good fun. 1987 being the last time England put eight goals away.

I'm heading to Podgorica on Monday for the Montenegro game; Bound to be a moody game, but a win will put us in control, and on the way to Rio.

We should beat Montenegro and go on and qualify with ease. Baines looked like he picked up a knock so cashley will probably start. Come on England!!

God Gavin..you really write some crass remarks...always so negative !!

What's so upsetting to your delicateness Trevor? The headline of a thrashing is melodramatic given a past shite side put 8 past them, if you want only rose tinted you really should stick with pravda and bluekipper and whatever you do, never turn on the news there's some really scary stuff called the real world on that every day.

It would be melodramatic if you're a San Marino fan, I suppose, Gavin, but an 8-0 win against anyone is a thrashing no matter how expected the result.

Zzzzzzzzzzz....

Southport would've hammered them.

Baines is the best LB anywhere on earth. Hopefully Hodgeson will use him accordingly, right thru the WC.

And Osman will do quite nicely against Euro/S. American teams.

Don 't be melodramatic Trevor. How can 8-0 be a thrashing? Gavin obviously knows what he is talking about. And don't be delicate – ask Gav about the 'real world'. He's a switched on kind of guy who knows about Russian newspapers and stuff like that like. You know what I mean?

OK, ok, this some new rule? Guy, sorry, Gavin, can't post after he's had a few on a friday night? What's TW coming to?

Final score: 8-0 England. Leave it be.

Seamus had a great game tonight, bombed forward as usual and defended really well. He took a couple of chances all the same, tried to nutmeg Zlatan on the edge of box one time and almost got caught but the referee didn't see his foul on the Swede. Surely he his now first-choice right-back for us.

Great to see Coleman raking the back of Zlatan's calf! He played well defensively but a little quiet going forward. Good result, pity Gibbo wasn't there...

They should change the qualification format. All the "minnow" teams should be in groups by themselves and let the top team in each group progress, just like the Pacific group with the likes of New Caledonia.

These are ridiculous games totally of no value to England or any of the top nations. All we see is a team chasing shadows for 90 minutes, hardly ever creating a chance at goal. That is not football in my book.

Baines and Osman will be benched for the Montenegro game for sure.

Whoahh — what's all this 'us' and 'we' business about England??? Most Blues I know don't care about them.

And let's be fair — we could get 11 ToffeeWeb posters to give San Marino a game...

And while I'm on the subject of international football, I see Naismith was on the bench for Scotland and yet Moyes says he's a top player and a top pro... Ahem?

Kevin Hudson : "on the way to Rio"

Knowing England's luck, the games will be in one of Porto Alegre (temperature about 4°-12° in June), Curitiba (2°-10°) or Manaus (35°+ no matter what, but the worst, most disorganised city in the country).

Neymar and Brazil will be in Rio for sure. If we get to the quarters, we may just see Copacabana.

Great performance by Bainesy, he might just have added a few million quid to his price tag. It will be tough holding onto him as he is definately the best left back in the world in my opinion. Cashley should move over and give him his starting spot as he is a much better player now.

Fran,

Obviously 'we' or England, (in deference to Andy Meighan) haven't qualified yet... but, if they do, you're right: we probably won't play the group games in Rio.

But, qualification pending, I'm going to Brazil, and, like Karl Pilkington, a visit to Christ the Redeemer has to be on the bucket list!

Also, totally agree with Tom's point.

Bainesy's backup wasn't bad yesterday either. Oviedo was excellent for Costa Rica against the United States in conditions he surely had never experienced before -- a blizzard in Colorado. He handled himself well defensively and caused the US some problems overlapping in attack from the LB position.

And Lyndon, I'm surprised you missed that one. You never miss anything!
Mark Frere

Come on, Lyndon, you're as bad as Moyes for overlooking Oviedo!

Seriously though I've only ever seen and heard good things about this lad's performances. I really hope Moyes gives him a chance in place of suspended Pienaar, but we all know it's gonna be the dire Naismith instead, with Neville brought in some how to cover Fellaini's absence. A dreppressing thought but the most likely outcome.

On Oveido, agree with the comments. Near impossible to see the game, never mind individual players. But his name came up several times and always with a compliment attached.

Why anyone wants our players risking injury in international games is totally beyond me. If Eng-er-land were playing in my back garden, I'd close the curtains.
