Martinez will be patient as he seeks to bolster Everton squad

New boss looking for the right 'characters'
Roberto Martinez has indicated that the search for additions to Everton's squad is already underway but says that he will take his time in selecting the right "characters" that will compliment the core group of players he has inherited from predecessor, David Moyes.

The new Blues boss spoke to evertontv last week and he explained that he isn't looking to bring in just anyone as he seeks to build on last season's sixth-place finish, one he sees as a great achievement.

"There is some work going on already and over the next few weeks we need to make sure that we bring the right characters as well as the right players to the football club," the Spaniard said.

"It's important we identify the type of help we need in the dressing room and in the team. We must make sure they are a type of footballer who will fit in with the train of thought at Everton FC."

Speculation in the media has, predictably, been gathering regarding potential Everton targets this summer but Martinez is prepared to be patient: "It's more a matter of finding the right players and that will take a little bit of time."

The 39-year-old is currently in the United States providing analysis of the Confederations Cup in Brazil for ESPN North America and he admitted that he enjoys international tournaments, particularly as they can introduce new players and new ways of playing the game.

"It's always a unique experience to see footballers under massive, massive pressure of representing their country and representing the expectations of a country and being able to play their football," he continued.

"There are always footballers that catch your eye under those circumstances.

"I always like to follow the big events and to do that with the name of Everton and opening new markets with Everton, it will be a real enjoyment and something I'm really looking forward to."

I hope he isn't as afraid of selling to buy as Moyes was.

Our squad is small but it still has deadwood in it that could be moved on.

We need some players that will not bottle the opportunities. For all the talent we've had, we've always had players that will choke.

I must say I'm pretty glad he is at a tournament earning money punditting (???) on TV rather than trying to nail some early deals like the RS, Villa, Man City and Utd.

There was a nice spot yesterday, I think before or at half-time in Spain v Uruguay, when Alexi Lallas and the big buffoon who fronts the 'soccer' coverage on ESPN called out Roberto as the new manager of Everton, and as a trophy winner for securing the "FA Cup Championship" (sic) with Wigan.

Blow me if the big oaf didn't repeat it moments later! Somebody must have briefed him: "Yes, he won the FA Cup and a place in the Championship!" Whatever happened to the good old teleprompter?

It was a rather unfortunate Freudian slip that Our Robbie had the good grace to deftly sidestep as he took the chance to tell the whole of North America, with a beaming smile on his face, what a great club Everton are and how proud he was to be the manager of such a phenomenal institution.

The official Everton site is pissing me off with this interview.

It's just one interview stretched in 4 parts, and they've milked the interview as much as possible, just to make it look like something is going on at Everton, when it clearly isn't.

Run by amateurs seriously.

'Dithering Roberto' lacks the alliterative quality of 'Dithering Dave'.

Problem is, I don't thing there's a word, that means dithering, that begins with an R.

If he had that Roy Hodgson thing, he could have been 'Wavering Woberto' or 'wishy washy woberto' but he..um...hasn't.

He could be 'Running hot and cold Roberto' but it's a little long and more than a little awkward.

'Two minds Martinez'?

Naaaar, trying too hard.

Let's be honest, Kenwright has deliberately lumbered us with a manager who has a name that we can't do a thing with.

I hope he doesn't get too hung up on finding "The right characters", some of the best players ever have had let's say "Different" outlooks on life than their team mates.

Ratboy (not one of the greatest ever (but still not too shabby!)) who plays for that unmentionable team not too far away, has scored them a few goals here and there and is about to make them a huge sell on profit. Can we pass up players like him and the potential profits?

Roberto, love and harmony is ok, but don't let it get in the way of winning things and making a few quid?

Wow! There's the usual bit of healthy scepticism about as usual. What would TW be without it, eh? How long has RM been in the EFC manager's seat? Let's hope we can move in to positive territory in time for season 2013/14.

Personally, I'd prefer to see RM take a breath, consider who/what is already good and is not so good within the squad before paying good money for a "supposedly" good player, only to find he is a misfit........ then not having the cash (fee & wages??) to replace him.

Of course, it starts with an overall strategy plan and this means BK has to let him see how much (or, more like, how little) is in the "offing".

RM may well want to see how well the under-20s perform as well as taking a good long look at Duffy, Vellios etc before deciding to splash the limited cash. If Barkley is going to be a regular first-teamer next season it's no good blowing what little cash we have on another central midfielder.

Hello Neil,

I suspect he's waiting to see just how big his war chest will be, to do that he needs to know if Fellaini is off or not and probably Baines also (oh and there may be a bid or two on Mirallas?), if the price is right?

There's also not much happening in the market at the moment, calm before the storm kind of thing.

Douglas (497) - Martinez might have both hands tied behind his back, but at least, unlike Alan Pardew, he hasn't had his legs tied together too and been forced to wear a gag and a blindfold.

Have a listen to the interview, genuinely desperate stuff.

If you were a Geordie, you'd be suicidal right now.

I mean, come on, Jay — we know you're not Martinez's biggest fan but how does he in any way shape or form make you worried already? What do you want him to say?

He's only just arrived and hasn't even met the squad yet – so I'm quite happy he takes his time in evaluating who and what he needs – especially given the uncertainty of who wants to stay and how much he'll have to spend.

He is his own man who'll hopefully make positive and decisive decisions – and not be BK's puppet.

He will be – Roberto "Martinet"!

Re the use of "phenomenal" by Roberto, I can't help but feel this is because of his Spanish background. In Spanish, "fenomenal" means "great" and is used when someone wants to really express something in a positive way. Otherwise they just say "bien". I don't think the Spanish language is as descriptive as the English one, so this could just be a translation thing. Just a thought!

I see nothing wrong with RM's comments. We do have great players and we do have an Academy with great players too (five with England in the Under-20 squad). The problem has always been DM not getting them to play attractive, winning football consistently and, despite his amazing reputation for promoting youth, leaving a dearth of promising talent lying in the reserves. It is to be hoped that, having recognised the talent, RM can do more with it.

I`ve been in warmer climes for the past month but nothing much changes at Everton, does it?

Not yet in office, our new manager is already spouting the asinine crap of his predecessor which means he is already a fully paid up member of the "Must Protect Bill's Arse" Society and so we can expect no purchases before deadline day!

I guess if you take Bill's money, you have to play by Bill`s rules — as I say, nothing changes.

The media have over the years tended to stress what a good manager David Moyes is — especially the way he "brings through" young players. Have I missed something? I don't think that has been David Moyes's strong point at all. If anything he has proved to be reluctant to give some of the young players a good run in the team. He has seemed to prefer playing an experienced player out of position, eg, Tim Cahill as a central striker, rather than playing a young player who is a "specialist" for that position.

Martinez has praised the academy and it looks as if he will be more prepared to give some of the younger players a chance. That is surely good news — the only way to find out if the young players can make it is to give them a chance. With 6 outfield substitutes allowed, it is a lot easier to give some of these young lads a chance these days. Harry Catterick gave young players an opportunity — with some like Joe Royle, John Hurst and Jimmy Husband to name but 3, it worked; with others it didn't. But it could well save Everton millions in the transfer market, So let him take his time and get to know his squad and bring in the right players.

If Liverpool offered us Suarez at a knockdown price, would it be right to accept it? A fine player yes — but also a renowned cheat and one that would be almost certain to miss several games through suspension and who would no doubt court controversy. That's why bringing in the "right players" is I think the correct approach.

Ged Simpson

Phil - what do you expect. A few days after appointment do you expect him to be giving his employer shit in the media? Many of us wish for change but if we had a manager that had started sounding off already, I wouldn't be very impressed. In fact I would think someone who did that was a complete prat.

Douglas (#497), I personally thought that being the manager of a club with very little to spend, Moyes would always be a bit cautious; who wouldn't? He can't spend willy-nilly and gamble that some signings might come off. He had to be sure that we were getting good players. To be fair, he's got them right more times than he hasn't.
James Marshall

For 'patience' read 'no money'.

Same old story as with Moyes (and I agree it was as much the board's fault as DM's with long-winded transfers), Martinez will have to wait until he either sells someone, or someone comes along on loan that wants to be paid in magic beans.

We don't have any money to splash about – as far as I'm aware, bugger all has changed on that front and these interviews & soundbites are merely designed to placate us lot and make us think there's 'lots going on' behind the scenes.

It's all hogwash – Martinez is working for ESPN, while BK is probably sunning himself in Fiji or somewhere while we all sit around waiting for summer to start (fat as BK chance). Of course Martinez will have one eye on the Tahitian players that we can afford, and will probably come back with 3 brothers all with the same name which we'll all be delighted about because it means the numbers are up.....

Oh and of course then there's Leroy Fer who's touting himself like some Amsterdam backstreet hooker, flaunting his wares in an attempt to sway Kenwright into jumping off his sun lounger with his Blankety Blank cheque-pen & book (showing my age) ready to sign him up.

Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.

Presumably all the other 19 Premier League Managers are at their desks, busy looking at reports of new signings are they? And it's only the Everton manager who does any TV work or goes on holiday!!!!

We have the evidence only very recently that spending money for the sake of it doesn't work – QPR!!! There are loads of rumours doing the rounds at the moment of various comings and goings – but in reality how many Premier League clubs have been active in the transfer market?

Does every club conclude their business before the end of June? Clearly the answer in No. So basically just be patient – yes we have heard that before. But, as I said, the reality is most of the clubs in the Premier League have yet to make major signings at the moment.

"Martinez will be patient as he seeks to bolster Everton squad New boss looking for the right characters" — sounds very familiar to what the previous manager has been saying for the last 11 years. Looks like the board have told him the same thing as Moyes — you have to sell to buy!

Luckily our scouting network is one of the best in the world so Martinez might be able to push some of the fringe players through into the 1st team or scout low cost but quality players straight into the team.

Paul Foster

To be fair Gerry, whatever you think of the old manager's approach (I had my reservations too) it was that approach that helped Baines become the best left-back in the world. Telling a player he's the best thing since sliced bread isn't always the best way to get the most out of them – but I take your point that there's already a distinct shift in tone.

Guys, this thread makes me laugh. We have that much spare cash that we cannot afford to purchase our own training facilities for £15 million.

Where are we going to fund any incoming players from?

The obvious answer is from the sale of some of our current squad: Fellaini, Baines etc..

All of the other clubs know this and will make us wait and wait to drive the price down and eliminate us as any threat!!

I hope Martinez is good at operating the fax machine on the last day of the transfer window because that is when we will do our business......

Patience is a virtue for any Everton Manager until Boys Pen Bill clears off....

My point was directed more at the lack of support from the board than at Martinez.

We supposedly have an extra £25 million from TV revenues and theoretically have the "Leroy Fer" money.

IMO it would be important to have any key additions with the squad early July for preseason.

Kevin Tully

Matt Traynor
66 Posted 18/06/2013 at 14:42:06
Jay #564, we didn't have the Leroy Fer money in January as the Jan TV payment was borrowed against. FC Twente refused to accept a low amount up front, that's why the deal didn't happen.

The August TV payment has also been borrowed against, albeit the payment amount is more than last season, therefore whilst there will be some money, it won't be available until later in the window. So the only way there will be funds before is if there are sales. Remember, we've had to pay out compensation as well for the new manager, and more for back room staff.

Phil Walling

I can see Finch Farm has been done to death on another thread but had the Club come out and said, "The transfer kitty for this summer is having to be seriously reduced because we have decided to invest in the future of the club by putting down a substantial deposit towards the PURCHASE of our training facility" — I for one would have thought they were, at last, moving in the right direction.

But would I have been alone in that sentiment?

Michael Brien
72 Posted 18/06/2013 at 16:08:12
Yes Man City have made a signing, but given that they are the richest club in the PL it's hardly a fair comparison is it? Arsenal aparently have a £70M transfer warchest –- and according to press reports Wenger has made at least 3 offers for players that would break their transfer record. I have yet to see any of those 3 players sign for Arsenal.

It's the silly season time with all kinds of rumours. Even involving Man City — is Tevez staying or going? There is plenty of time for RM to make a move in the transfer market,

In my memory, our most productive summers in terms of signings were 1981 & 1998. When Howard Kendall took over as manager, we signed 7 players in summer 1981 and in 1998 when Walter Smith took over we seemed to make a new signing every week. How did we do in both of those seasons? It's not about how many players you sign that's important in my opinion — it's whether or not those players are the right players that is really important.

I think we all tend to look at our paltry bank balances and think "money is money is money"... but I don't think buying Finch Farm outright would have made any sense. However, somebody else far wiser than me made the point that borrowing against a fixed asset like the land, bricks and mortar of Finch Farm, is far easier and cheaper (interest-wise) than say borrowing to buy more players.

Yes, we would have probably had to find a down-payment of what £1-2M... (Hmmm... that's what we forked out to Dave "broken leg" Whelan for Radical Robbie...) but running the numbers out long term on the mortgage payments versus rent to LCC must surely have seen a much smaller total outlay?

I was only alluding to the transfer window, not anything to do with finances or anything else.

Patient? So this means nothing will happen till mid-August? Typical. We must be the shitest run club in the prem.

It would appear that the doom-mongers are already showing us all what they're made of... Dithering! Are you serious?

Give the man a chance and a bit of respect. He is clearly a highly intelligent and articulate individual even if he does tend to overuse the word 'phenomenal'. I'm sure he would spend any funds received from the sale of Fellaini on quality replacements.

When he says that we have not received any offers for our prize asset, do you not believe him? Or maybe you think he should send out e-mails to prospective buyers. Get real and try and adopt a shred of his integrity and optimism.

Eric #505 So what? We've had numerous players earmarked in the past and you know how that went! Eugene #498 thanks for the link m8! Made me chuckle and thank God I'm not a Geordie!

Jay, at least he speaks better of the club than Mr Loyalty did.

What would your reaction have been If he came out and said that the club was crap, the fans are idiots and are completely ignorant when it comes to football and that we haven't got a prayer of top 10 next season?

He is showing more ambition for the post than the last one did and at least we won't be getting any" knife to a gunfight" or "underdogs" or "get to 40 points and go from there" quotes.

If I was RVP I'd leave and sharpish because his goals ratio will fall off the scale completely, believe me.

Most of us realise that with `good` players demanding £50K a week, a signing on 1 July can have added costs of half a mill to his fee by the time the window shuts.
Too many of those and another trip to BVI is inevitable! Cheaper, then, to shop in the clearance market in `very` late August, then the next (or the one after`s) season`s SKY money is coming in or can be borrowed against!

He brings a Spanish football brain to Everton FC.
It will be magic. I can't wait.

Sign Leroy Fer and i'll be happy, we owe him after messing him around. Then hopefully he can pay us back by becoming a legend for us.

With all the moans and groans that we Evertonians have – don't you just love Newcastle United!!!! Yes their ability as a club to do totally stupid things, in the full glare of publicity, is something we have been able to rely on these last few years to give us all a laugh.

Joe Kinnear as director of football!!! And apparently he is higher in the club hierarchy than Alan Pardew!!! Despite all we have to complain about or some Evertonians have to complain about – it surely pails into insignificance with the soap opera that is Newcastle United!!!! I think Roberto Martinez speaks better English than Kinnear!!

Latest rumour is that we are interested in signing a Brazillian left back – is this good news or bad? Obviously there is the worry that RM is interested in signing him in case Baines leaves. But can this guy play in other positions? Does anyone know much about him?

As I was "rambling" through this thread I started to think about a nick name beginning with "R" for our new manager.

He has said something during his short time with us about "achieving the unthinkable" at Everton - I like that attitude. That would really be something - in which case we could call him Real Roberto.

Michael (786) - Well it's clear, as well as Kinnear being a shit-stirrer and alehouse lawyer par-excellence, he is also an incredible Tom Pepper .

In fact so advanced is he in the art of "Honest to God!" spoofing, that BK must be worrying about keeping hold of 'The Aldridge Pryor award for Britain's biggest liar'.

According to Joe...

"I got over 10k letters when I had my heart attack" - REALLY!?

"I thought I'd done an excellent job there" (Newcastle) - win percentage: 19.23%

"And I am not saying all of the Geordie fans but many of them were sucked into it. If they looked at my job, what I done, carefully they would have said I done a good job" - repeat, win percentage: 19.23%

"I've never been sacked in my life" - Luton.

"I have played in five cup finals, I have won the lot" - whatever way you frame 'I have won the lot', not true.

"I had over 400 games for Tottenham Hotspur" - 196 league games.

"Been manager of the year three times" - Once.

'..look when you're at Wimbledon, there ain't no budget, you find the players yourself - there ain't no budget" - Signs John Hartson for £7.5million in 1999.

"So they say I haven't had any experience in buying and selling players - sure I have. I bought Dean Holdsworth for 50 grand" - £650,000.

"I sold Marcus Gayle, Leonhardsen, Micky Harford, John Hartson, Hans Segers, most of them were free transfers" - Gayle wasn't. Leonhardsen wasn't. Harford wasn't.

"I played with some of the best players in the world at Tottenham, in the best team in the world in Tottenham" - I'll pass no comment on that.

When we play Newcastle next season, the competition might be just as stiff in the boardroom as on the park.

BK: 'I can eat 14 packets of cream crackers in 17 minutes"

JK: "I can do 15!"

How did we fail to appoint Mr Kinnear in some capacity? He sounds perfect - mind you we can bring him in when we next decide to change badges , move ground or make fictitious bids for £50m players. I can't see 'honest' Alan Pardew staying beyond September. I wonder if Joe thinks that the earth is flat, the moon is made of cheese and that Newcastle are the greatest club in the history of English football despite not winning the league title since the season before Dixie scored his 60 goals.

Joke Kinnear is a clown. I'm sure Yohan "Kabab" and Hatem Ben "Afri" will be getting out of that club in a heartbeat. Most of the things he was saying on Talksport was laughable. So much so that Derek "Lambizi" has left the club.

Sign players, he can't even bloody pronounce them for christ's sake!

By being patient he actually means that he is waiting for his chairman to get Fellaini sold so he has half of the money from the sale to spend. You're kidding yourself if you think there is a decent transfer kitty unless the afore mentioned happens. Despite finishing 6th and receiving a fair few quid from TV rights we will still operate in a sell to buy policy. Welcome to Everton Football Club Roberto.

Honda looked amazing again for Japan tonight, there were rumours about him in January for £5m but I think we missed the boat. I can imagine the list of clubs wanting him now to grow significantly after tonight's performance.

Available on a free transfer now as well.

Don't like the sound of this at all. It's becoming obvious that there is no money and someone will have to be sold before anyone can be signed. We are already looking at a Brazilian left back. Baines replacement presumably.

Can anybody else see our beloved Chairman going back on any promises he made to the new man re team building and being told to stuff his job where the sun don't shine?
Ross Edwards

"Bill "and "promises" are words which shouldn't be used in the same sentence Andrew. This backing for Roberto he was going on about at the press conference, did he find that cash under his bed or something?

New manager changes nothing, Boys pen Billy has just spun him the same
lies as he did Moyes.

We all know there is no money, it will be a couple of free,s late in August and
maybe one signing for cash if we move someone on.

Welcome Roberto.....

Studied patience is all well and good and in principle I approve but as many on this thread have said it is not about deadline day alone.

I must confess that I wince and shudder when I see that the shite are already naming and chasing and in cases signing their targets nicely ahead of pre-season training and friendlies and 2 months ahead of the kick-off.

Quite frankly I feel know that Bobby might be keeping tabs of the odd Mexican, Japanese, or Tahitian or four, but I would rather he was in Blighty setting a different modus operandi to what we for the most part have done - waited, waited, waited ...

Now I know this might all/will be conditional on outgoing - get rid of fuzzy hair, I say - but I wish that Bobby was paying as much attention this minute to incoming and outgoing as the new Man-U gaffer.

Yes, phones, internet, skype WTF and I know he is not on the books yet (I assume his contract starts July-1?) but he is in all but contract our gaffer now as Moyes spends 24/7 to boost manure.

When is this pointless and worthless Confederations Cup over?

Ross Edwards

Paul, Hopefully he is NOT keeping tabs on a Tahitian. What next? Shall we sign a San Marino player?
