McCarthy bid knocked back

£10m offer short of Wigan's valuation

Everton have had a bid for James McCarthy rejected by Wigan Athletic.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that an offer of £10m, believed to be worth £7m with £3m in appearance-related add-ons, is nowhere near Wigan's valuation of the player. Media speculation, led by ITV Sport, suggests that Everton have come back with a bid closer to £12.5m.

With Marouane Fellaini looking increasingly likely to join Manchester United tomorrow, Roberto Martinez is in the market for a replacement and is following up his long-held interest in bringing McCarthy to Goodison Park.

Whelan confirmed earlier that he has been in discussion with a club regarding McCarthy today and comes as no surprise that the club in question is Everton.

Martinez knows the midfielder well from his time at the DW Stadium but could be forced to pay well over the odds for the 22 year-old given that he is up against the transfer deadline.
