Barry confident on new faces before the deadline

, 11 August, 43comments  |  Jump to most recent

Acknowledging the growing frustration from many Evertonians over the club's lack of activity in the transfer window this summer, Gareth Barry says he is sure the Blues 'have something up their sleeves.'

The veteran midfielder was interviewed by PA Sport at the Everton In The Community annual Golf Day at Formby Hall and he was asked about the possibility of Everton bringing in new players to help improve a squad that limped to an 11th-placed finish last season.

"It is just about being patient," Barry said. "It is always hard to be patient being a fan. You want players joining your club to excite you and give you something different to look at.

"Every club does things differently and if that means leaving business till late then that is the way Everton do it.

"Other clubs have strengthened really well and spent a lot of money so we are up against quality teams but it is about getting momentum and that comes from winning games.

"If the manager can keep that core of players together and keep them fit we are capable of achieving good things.

Barry, himself a transfer deadline-day acquisition when he first joined Everton on loan two years ago, concluded: "I am sure the manager and chairman (Bill Kenwright) have something up their sleeves to excite fans."

It's ok everyone, Barry's optimistic!

We could do with a new face to replace him, he's so slow.

Clive#2, you're right there. I have been frustrated at the lack of movement in the transfer window like everyone else and its clear we are going to have to wait till transfer deadline day to get anyone.

I just hope we can pick up a few points and stay away from anymore injuries till then.

I'm of the opinion that if we buy Evans, Austin and An Other that this is realistic given the clubs current status. It may not be what we all want but we're not a top club in reality so these type of players suit both our budget and our standing in the current climate.

I'd welcome both of those signings. I think it's wildly optimistic to expect Austin though. Hope I'm wrong.

Mark, I agree. I think Austin will go to Spurs if only due to the London thing. He allegedly has dodgy knees and a jippy shoulder too.

We’re not going to win and build any momentum now are we Gareth. Fail to prepare - prepare to fail! We should have had players in before the season kicked off. Rubbish result and performance on the first game of the season at home, we play all the teams that all finished in the top 7 in our next 10 games.

I’m struggling to see where our next win is coming from, we could be in real trouble in the next couple of months. And to top it all, Stoke officially beat us to the signing of Shaqiri, says it all really!

It doesn't matter who we sign, we won’t finish higher than 8th. We need new owners, a new ground, not new players or manager. We’re just also-rans every year.

Guys I don’t think its quite time to push the panic button just yet, but am with the majority we need to get a move on. A few hard games approaching and we need to be getting players bedded in.

I’d love us to get Kevin Gamiero as our number 10, quick, mobile, an eases past defenders, not to expensive either.

Also I heard a few weeks ago about Dragovic, played great against us and fits the bill, I honestly believe we are a few players short of atleast the european places.

Outside of Arsenal, City, Manu, and Chelsea so is everybody else.

@Anthony

After Arsenals "rubbish result" maybe they should get rid of all their players and buy a new team..

Frank #11, the difference being that we have seen similar dismal performances like that all last season. The signs are worrying, especially with all the other mid-table teams adding quality to their ranks whilst we are being left to stagnate, but if you’re happy with that then that’s your look out.

Think Barry is speaking some sense here. It's disappointing and possibly detrimental to not hVe new players in already but they WILL come and if they are the right ones then I will forgive the delay.

My concern is that likes of Lennon, Evans and Austin may prove inferior to the likes of Payet, Ogbonna and Rondon. Time will tell.

Sensible words from a very sensible pro. It's true we're frustrated as other clubs around us seem to be adding to their squads with some real quality players, but, this is the Everton way ( it's not to say it's the right way, but, it is generally our way....)

Because we're getting so close to the death I would hope any potential deal for Jonny Evans would be a deal like Villa had with Cleverley last season - so that would be a loan for me.

Lennon - while not an imaginative signing, it seems a no brainer not to buy him given the impact he made last season. Hopefully he wont cost more than 5m

Austin - I think we're be lucky to sign him, but if we do, the goalscoring is isn't a doubt for me. He's not another James Beattie. He's been prolific at every level. Neither is he another AJ who was only a 20 goal striker for one season in his career, and about half of those goals were penalties. My only question mark would be the condition of his knee. As I said on another thread, if talks progress, he'll be lucky to pass a medical given our track record for cancelling deals on failed mdeicals. If it was to go through. I think a 15m fee is worth every penny as long as the payments are staggered, so we can protect our investment if he does get crocked.

Patience is a virtue. At least judge the board and manager on what they achieve by the end of the transfer window. We have done well late in the transfer window before (Baines, Jagielka, Pienaar, Cahill, Arteta and Martyn - to name a few)

Of course the club would like to sign players earlier, but agents like to leave it until as late as possible to try to get competing bids and a better deal for their player (and themselves).

Wise words Gareth Barry. A centre back and a no 10 has been prioritised for a long time now. Last week a forward was mentioned. This will happen, probably very late. So we need to be patient.

While the transfer window remains open, as I’ve stated, it isn’t the lack of signings that’s letting us down. Its the injury list. Add Baines, Gibson, Besic, McGeady, Pienaar and Deulofeu to what we had on Saturday and Im sure we would have won.

The problem with signing players at the end of the first month of the season is not just the matches they have not been available for in August, it is how long during September before they get used to our way of playing and working with new team mates.

We have just twelve outfield players to choose from next Saturday if Mirallas is unfit.Besic and Deulofeu are only hopefuls.

We are being run in a very amateurish way and it is difficult to get my head around the club reasons for delaying. No one of any authority is speaking out.Martinez and Barry are just employee’s.

If we are right then the rest of the league clubs are wrong !

Trevor, has it ever occurred to you that it's not out of choice? There's nothing shady going on, just business with people who are outside their control.

Chelsea, for instance, are another club who haven't bought lots of players.

If results were based on talk instead of action we would walk the league every year.

Just go and get the players instead of talking about it.

And BTW if we get Johnny Evans I will kick the cat and I have even got one.

The lad is useless and has been sussed by Van Gaal.Even currently Distin is a better player.

WE need Van Dijk, Charlie Austin and someone like Nolito or maybe Hallovic on loan.

We have surely left it too late! The season has started so who wants to sell their players now?

I'm going to challenge myself to stay off TW, Twitter , SSN for 24 hours?! Then when I log back on surely there'll be some positive news!

Simple question - why don't we have as much money as some of these clubs? Bristol City, Stoke, Crystal Palace?? Very depressing!

Didn't Martinez once sign McCarthy, Deolefeu and Lukaku on deadline day two years ago? Pundits went from saying how badly were we in the transfer market, and after deadline day we managed to do the best business of all the clubs.

I would be happy with Van Dijk, Charlie Austin and Lennon.

Barry is the new Phil Neville.

Senior pro who gets wheeled out to say everything is fine, don't panic! There's a huge storm brewing at Goodison and if we aren't careful we are going to get pissed wet through.
Even lads around me on Saturday who aren't in anyway 'moaners' were saying we can't keep playing like we did on Saturday and somethings got to change.

(Jay Harris 21) You are spot on, especially about Evans. He has been one of the most error prone defender in the premier league, when he is not injured. He will fit in well with our defence or lack of it.
Brian Porter

Colin @24, I agree there is a storm brewing above Goodison at present. What really concerns me I that not so long ago our manager was telling us and the world he had already identified the players he wanted to complete his squad, and since then the silence has been deafening. Was that just another of Roberto's now famous 'phenomenal' soundbites? It's beginning to look that way. Most of the really marketable talent has, lets face it, been snapped up already by the likes of Stoke, Palace, West Ham, etc. We look like being the runt of the litter come deadline day, scratching around under the table trying to pick up the scraps not wanted by the bugger, more astute and aggressive members of the pack. If the PL was a wolf pack, we'd be the weak and weedy little one tossed out and left to fend for itself as winter approaches, as we have little or nothing contribute to the overall strength of the pack. Worried? Damn right I am!

Our next signing should be Eva Carneiro, the Chelsea physio. She has one of the healthiest squads in the prem, she is cute and, it would be a poke in the eye for the mysoginist Mourinho. Let's get Eva!!

Alex #20 are you seriously comparing Chelskis transfer policy to ours? The mind boggles!!

The problem I have with late signings is, aside with the bedding in period, is the wasted games. There will have been 4 by the end of the transfer window and whilst the team may astound me and pluck a few results out of the hat, doubtful I know, its likely they don't and if thats the case then that will probably be 1 point from the first 4 games before finalising your squad. Ridiculous by anybodys standards.

Dave #28 , my point is that we don't want to sell Stones to Chelsea, so despite their riches, haven't been able to get their target. You don't see their fans berating their board.

Yes, earlier transfers would be better, but don't be so quick to blame the board for something that is almost certainly outside their control. See #17.

There is a clear indication that money is the problem. Martinez has stated that he wanted Shaquiri. We offered a loan deal only for Stoke to come in with the cash.

Alex #29/17. Chelsea fans don't berate the board/Abramovich due to their multi titles which have been bought for them. If a rich benefactor came to us and gave us all league titles, Champions league glory and FA/League cups I don't think I would complain much to them either.

I see your point in post 17, however all the players mentioned were Moyes players. Whilst I agree that McCarthy and Lukaku were good buys (if a little overpriced) I don't really trust Martinez to make quality last minute buys. Moyes had a great scouting network and whilst he dithered in the transfer market, generally (although not all by any means) his buys were spot on. Pienaar, Cahill, Fellaini, Mirallas, Jags etc were not household names. Could even throw in Arteta too. Martinez doesn't appear to have any kind of worthwhile scouting network thats why I'm concerned

James you say 'we're not a top club in reality so these type of players suit both our budget and our standing in the current climate'

I 100% disagree - if Newcastle, West Ham, Swansea and Stoke can sign the likes of Wijnaldum, Payet, Ayew and Affelay, I simply don't accept that we are unable to sign a similar calibre of player. The likes of Lennon and Evans are no where near this type of quality and it's not surprising they are both cast offs and the fact they are now our only serious targets is frankly embarassing. Both players are desperate to find a new premiership club.

It cannot be a money issue as we definitely get at least an extra 30m odd a year now from sky, which will increase even more in 2016.

It cannot have anything to do with the timing of the sky cash pay out. (If I know for certain I will get 100k in 1-2 months time, it doesn't stop me from buying things now - especially when I can defer the payments over x years.)

There is either a refusal by the board to back the manager (for whatever reason but not financial) or these types of players simply don't want to play for the manager (it cannot be the club as I don't accept that Swansea, Stoke etc are considered 'bigger brands' than Everton). It also has nothing to do with the 'London thing' given Stoke and South Wales aren't exactly exotic locations (no offence to any Welsh or people from the black country btw).

We simply cannot attract players of the proper quality right now and that has to have something to do with the manager. Players all talk with each other and gossip about which club/manager is good to be at. The fact that Mirallas, Garbutt and McCarthy all signed extended contracts does not mean that much either, doesn't necessarily mean they fully buy into Martinez's 'vision'. At the end of the day they are getting significantly more money and it's good for the club as their transfer value is higher. The club didnt want to sell two of them and Garbutt is not even with us this season. The rumours about spurs being after McCarthy could have just been bollocks from his agent to get a better contract. No bid was ever made at the end of the day as far as we know. The contracts in no way mean they will be here until they expire.

I hope to be proved wrong in the next 2 weeks but it's certainly worrying that we don't seem to be able to sign anyone of real quality that would significantly improve our side.

Was it in the middle of one of his two and a half minute replies? I generally doze off after an average of 53 seconds.

Dont know how true it is but i'd heard that we were never in for shaquiri because he's a shandy andy in the making. Makes sense when you realise he's been at 4 clubs in 4 years and Inter were desperate to get shut.

Personnally i'd be aiiming to get Bolassie in from Palace, it would at least stop him ripping Coleman apart twice a season.

I don’t know why we don’t look in the Championship or equivalent lower leagues in other countries. There must be some talent good enough there that wouldn’t be too expensive either... so everyone's happy. Even if we picked up a couple of these it would reinforce the squad at a low cost while we wait for our main targets.
Dave Whitwell
47 Posted 12/08/2015 at 13:14:14
Dave Ganley, I'm with you.

Its the scouting network that is extremely concerning, Moyes had a habit off plucking players out of a hat, and famously had extensive dossiers prepared on many more. Of course we still had to wait until the last minute to capture them, but somehow I had more confidence then.

Martinez just doesn't seem to have the same network, Kone & McCarthy, players he had worked with previously, Lukaku & Barry known premier league talents and if I'm not mistaken Lukaku was one of those on Moyes radar even before Chelsea went in there for £18m. Mcgeady & Besic have hardly been great successes although I would like to see Besic given more opportunities. Perhaps the only one you can really credit Martinez with is Deulofeu.

There is nothing in any of these signings that suggest Martinez has a plan or direction for our club. Added to that are the extremely confusing press conferences and interviews, I mean seriously watch them back, I wonder if they even make sense to him. I am fed up with hearing its about "positive experiences", about "getting to that level". The season has started and we should be ready, and its not about experiences, primarily its about results, the experiences come later!

This is not a knee jerk reaction to Saturday either, I have been concerned ever since the opening day of last season.

Why is it OK for us to settle for two cast offs when both of those clubs are buying better players now! If Lennon and Evans suit us then give up anymore idea’s of top ten finishes. Clubs who receive far less revenue than us are well out spending us. Watching Swansea and others at the week end depressed me as I see how much they have improved with their new players already bedded in.

Acquiring Evans and Lennon will not lift the team and excite the fans. We should have been trying for Ayew and Payet who are both decent players. We are crying out for a similar player to Payet . These two alone would fill our stadium and lift the fans.

Some guy on here actually touted Barry as a full back to cover for Baines. We are losing out one by one on every player of any use that we have been linked with. I reckon the board are to blame but I may be wrong !!

Anthony dwyer
49 Posted 13/08/2015 at 14:22:11
I myself admit to being one of Barry's biggest critics, he is slow, he gives too many fouls away, and he gives the ball away quite often. Despite the above he does not hide, he is always looking for the ball and is happy to take it on when ever possible.

The biggest problem with Barry is he is being over played. Martinez can not field a team without him, whether he is in the centre of the park or if he’s is moved to the back in a centre back roll or left back roll.

Barry would be a much more effective player for us if we tried to start football matches in the manner we end matches. This way we could play quicker from the off, gain a lead then bring Barry on to shut teams out late on.

Barkley would be ideal to start next to McCarthy especially when we are at home to any team outside of the top 3 sides.

As for signings, we won’t sign anyone to excite us, I don’t think, Shaqiri was the only name that truly excited me; all the other names are names anyone would expect to be linked with us.
