Fabian Delph is almost certainly out along with Bernard

With the final international break of the calendar year out of the way, Everton return to Premier League action this weekend with the visit of the division's bottom club, Norwich City.

It's an opportunity for Marco Silva's team to record back-to-back league victories for the first time this season following the 2-1 win at Southampton a fortnight ago.

Since their stunning triumph at the Etihad Stadium last month, the Canaries have failed to register a win and have scored just two goals in their last five matches. It means that they come into this weekend mired in 20th spot, four points from safety.

That, combined with a run of three matches now without defeat in all competitions, has ratcheted up expectation among Evertonians that this should be a comfortable three points for the hosts. However, Silva's side have rarely made it easy for themselves and as such there are no easy matches.

Nevertheless, Everton will come into this fixture with a degree of confidence as they look to close the gap between themselves and the top five, which currently stands at just three points.

In addition to long-term absentees, André Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Silva is almost certain to be without Bernard and Fabian Delph, both of whom were rated as doubtful by the manager yesterday.

Cenk Tosun, meanwhile, has been cleared to play after he was forced to sit out of Turkey's two most recent Euro2020 qualifiers because of a minor groin injury.

Everton may have won their last game but it remains to be seen whether he keeps faith with the same starting XI, particularly as it was only after Alex Iwobi in particular entered the fray that the Blues found the cutting edge to carve out the winner for Richarlison.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott and Tosun were in the line-up at St Mary's but with Silva demonstrating little faith in Moise Kean as a starting striker and Dominic Calvert-Lewin having been named among the subs in each of the last three Premier League games, both the former Gunner and the Turk could yet feature from the start again. Iwobi, meanwhile, will push Sigurdsson hard for the No 10 role.

If results go the Toffees' way this weekend, they could well find themselves in the top half of the table heading into what has long been regarded as a daunting run of fixtures.

A strong performance against a struggling Norwich side that already looks doomed would go a long way towards providing the team with the confidence to approach December with less trepidation than they otherwise would.

Kick off: 3pm, Saturday, 23 November, 2019
Referee: Anthony Taylor
Last Time: Everton Norwich

Predicted Line-up: Pickford, Sidibé, Holgate, Mina, Digne, Schneiderlin, Davies, Sigurdsson, Walcott, Richarlison, Tosun

I'd be a bit more adventurous at home against a poor outfit
Pickford
Sidibe Holgate Mina Digne
Walcott Davies Iwobi Richarlison
DCL Kean

I tend to agree with your line up there John. Holgate for his pace at the back yes. Although he's prone to the odd mistake, he's improving and I think he's the future in that position.

Midfield is dictated by injuries and up-front, definitely go for them from the start.

We need to get Moise on the score sheet, preferably in front of the Goodison faithful. Not sure about the next few games with that line-up though...

It's been said before by so many, Paul #2, but you said it best.

I find it hard to believe that Silva will go with Tosun up top ahead of Kean or Calvert-Lewin, but he might surprise me. He certainly has by handing Keane's job to Holgate... I really thought he'd abandoned the youngster for good.

Mike #4,

It's a subjective opinion, but give Tosun 10 chances on goal he'll finish more of them than Calvert-Lewin. Kean probably has head problems at the moment and Tosun would out finish him too.

Tosun, because of his lack of outright pace has had limited chances under Silva, but his head has never gone down and in my opinion deserves a run in the team.

I do though expect more to come from Kean (maybe?).

Mike, I know Silva said Tosun is fit, but surely it's a gamble to play him if he's had a knock? Unless Tosun has pulled out of the Turkey games to give himself a run at a start here? Can't see that as he's a proud Turk. I'm expecting Calvert-Lewin to start.

They had better get the points tomorrow because the next 4/5 games are going to be really tough to get anything from unless they start punching above their weight.

After taking care of Soton they should take care of the Canaries... but, these days, we never know what to expect. With the injuries and Silva's team selections etc, we don't have reason for much confidence against any team.

Walcott and Tosun appear to me to have a good understanding so I would start with a front three of Walcott, Tosun, and Richarlison in a 4-3-3 as Lyndon has suggested.

The last thing Moise Kean needs is to be pulled early again but, without a doubt, he needs more game time.

I would bring him on for Walcott on 60 mins. Kean, Tosun, and Richarlison could prove a potent combination.

The midfield is a conundrum but I think I would go with Lyndon's starting line-up.

Surely a win is the only acceptable result and I think it should have to be a good one for us to take any confidence into the December fixture list.

If we fail tomorrow, I'll be throwing darts at pictures of Silva and the players and also letting a bout of thunder and lightning loose on this forum.

If Norwich play deep, then there's no point in playing Kean up top. Anyone see his performance against Sheff Utd? It's not his game.

11 Posted 22/11/2019 at 22:14:43
One thing for sure about Silva. He doesn't like to change a winning team. I'm not expecting any changes, why would he?

I think Tosun deserves more than just one game. Holgate won his spot. Anyone else wanting to win theirs will have to wait for a chance. As it should be for now.

Rob @5, I bet Kean's head is just fine. Think about what the last week has been like for him.

1. Smacks back at his father for making dumb comments.
2. Scores a brace in his U21 qualifying match.
3. Gets a full, public backing from his manager.

I'd say his head is held pretty high right now, no? I know you rate Tosun, but if you put any stock at all into statistics, Calvert-Lewin's are significantly better per 90 minutes (in terms of expected goals & shooting percentage). It's a fairly small sample size, however.

Steve @6, I'm near-certain Tosun didn't play in the Turkey matches this week.

Ernie @10, Norwich don't play deep, so nothing to worry about there.

What a treat it will (I hope) be to be back to Premier League footy after the latest interminable international break.

In fairness to Silva, it is great to see him give Holgate his chance and the lad looks pure class. I'd even put him up there with Stones. Imagine if we had Stones and Holgate now. In fact, those two would be better in midfield than Schneiderlin and Delph.

Phil # 16

Yes, in trouble with many of us, but he's here until at least the New Year, they're not sacking him.

Defeat tomorrow is unthinkable, but it's apparent that those in power at Everton FC are working to a different timetable to the rest us fans.

Oh bloody Hell is it time for Everton again? I was quite enjoying the Euros, Trump's impeachment, Randy Andy's demise.

Hopefully, the break won't disrupt the little bit of momentum we got going. Norwich early on looked like a team who'd score a lot but concede a lot. Now they're not scoring a lot so it should be a win. Don't really care if it's 1-0, or 10-0 but anything less than 3 points and I will be very disappointed.

Mark #15,

It's worth noting that Kean has been here a few months now and the squad has gotten used to him in training, the players around him will now know how to better control him in training on the pitch.

He probably doesn't look as good in training as he did when he first arrived or feel as good; he now has to perform in training as good or better to get his chance in the team and, considering what I've written in the first chapter, that won't be easy.

This could take time...

In an otherwise frustrating season so far, Holgate and Davies have begun to shine. If Kean can follow suit, along with a couple others, perhaps then l'm sure we will all be cheered up. It's always great to see some younger players come through.

I can't see Marco Silva gambling or changing his system for Norwich, so it will be the old 4-2-3-1 again:

Pickford
Sidibe Holgate Mina Digne
Schneiderlin Davies
Walcott Iwobi Richarlison
Calvert-Lewin

I'd put ten bob on it.

Mike Gaynes
24 Posted 22/11/2019 at 23:35:55
Steve and Rob, I was speaking about health rather than merit. I assume Silva has just as much faith in Tosun as the other two at this point, but I'm skeptical that he's 100% fit.

And Rob, I would point out that while, yes, Tosun will finish more of those 10 chances than Calvert-Lewin, he will take a lot longer to get that many. Calvert-Lewinjust gets in those positions more often on a per-minute basis. And it's my opinion that he also does more to help the attack in general with his hold-up play and passing. Tosun to me is a last-15 sub at this point.

Tony #22, that list of names sounds like the characters on a children's cartoon series.

Mike Doyle
25 Posted 22/11/2019 at 23:44:42
Agree with Mike G. Tosun is an impact sub. He doesn't have the strength or pace to worry most Premier League defences as a starter. Calvert-Lewin – despite his short-comings – gives them more to worry about.

A 2019 version of Bob Latchford would give them more to think about.

For recognising his club would not make the top 4 unless action was taken, Man of the Week award goes to Daniel Levy.

It is anybody's guess who Silva will select. A lot will depend how the players will come back from international duty and on Silva's own erratic selection process.

When the team is named, expect a few surprises, which is what normally happens.

Derek Thomas
27 Posted 23/11/2019 at 00:47:44
Yes, we have injuries and, for all I know or care, so do Norwich. But we should win at a canter, though it would be no surprise, seen as we're prone to giving away daft goals to the least likely of opponents, if we struggled to get any result at all.

Silva, main architect of the above inconsistency, due to lack of a serious candidate, sadly, is going nowhere until the end of the season.

The recent Spurs thing is only the 1st leg in a game of big league managerial musical chairs... so, as such, won't have much bearing on us. We won't even be in the running for the last man left standing without a job.

Yes I'm pissed off. Yes I'll still watch at 1am.

Sort it, will you, Moshiri.

Andy Peers
28 Posted 23/11/2019 at 01:59:38
Let us attack and give our forwards some confidence.

Pickford
Sidibe Mina Holgate Digne
Davies Sigurdsson
Richarlison Iwobi
Keane Tosun

This team could hammer Norwich. Give it a try!

Please don't play Schneiderlin... there is no point against Norwich.

Andy #23

You should read Dereck's post #27 reference 'last man standing', because that is exactly the perception most Managers have of Everton as a career prospect and potential p!ayers perceptions is not far behind. Even some of our best players will be considering their prospects in the new year. I don't entirely blame Silva for this state of affairs , this has been the position before he arrived. .

If Pouchettino joined Everton I would eat my hat. The reality is that potential Managers are illusions bandied about on ToffeeWeb.

Always interesting to read into suggested lineups. Who should play where and when and how. All an essential part of being a football fan. Even more so supporting Everton in the most unpredictable of seasons, when a team can actually win away 9-0. I am always cautious about making predictions but I we will go out on a limb and predict that we will not win 9-0. I am actually happy when we just manage to score one as long as the opponents score one less.

It is impossible to watch Everton this season and actually relax.

Paul Birmingham
31 Posted 23/11/2019 at 05:42:54
John@1, Id start with that line up. Hopefully we start on the offensive from the start and play with out fear.

The international break tends to stifle any momentum we ever make. I hope it's a game where Kean, can make a statement.

With Norwich, you never know but they are in a rut but many times in the past theyve turned us over, hopefully not today.

Going for 4-1, for us. We need to tale spirit in to the oncoming run of very tough games, which will have a significant bearing on this season.

Brian Porter

There's definitely never been a better time to give Kean a start. Play him for the first hour and I don't think he'll feel bad if he's subbed at that point for DCL or Cenk.
Silva's finally come out with some good words about the lad. Now let's see a bit of good management by him showing some confidence in him.
Lose today, and it has to be the end for Silva. Tottenham have binned a much better manager. Dare Moshiri be as bold?

Kean scored 2 for Italy playing wide right but not in a 4231 where wingers have to defend more but in a 433 like the RS play. I'd very much like us to give that formation a try with Iwobi and Davies as the more aggressive forward box to box players and Delph or Schneiderlin (will be Gbamin when fit) sitting deeper.

Pickford
Sidibe Holgate Mina Digne
Davies Schneiderlin Iwobi
Kean Calvert-Lewin Richarlison

Paul Setter

I'm hoping Schneiderlin and Delph are no where near the squad I would rather play 2 goalkeepers there than 2 of the worse players I've seen in years both aren't fit to lace Tom cleverlys boots. But knowing the charlatan in charge both will start and it will be a struggle
Derek Thomas
36 Posted 23/11/2019 at 08:00:07
Brian @ 32; Spot on, all things being equal, its Norwich City, not Manchester City today and in theory, if Kean can't show a bit of an impression Vs them, then either he's not up to it or the team he has around him isn't up to it or - this being Everton; both.

They're all big games, but for all three; Kean, The Team and the Manager, it screams out - Make a Statement.

Hugh Jenkins
37 Posted 23/11/2019 at 08:11:07
Sam (34) that is, more or less, the team and set up I suggested on another forum. I would like to see Schneiderlin replaced though. I am not certain with whom, at the moment - but on recent reports I wouldn't mind giving Baningime another try as CDM.

Silva has to play Kean or what was the point of buying him. I think he will be under pressure to start the youngster and a few goals will take the pressure off. He has to impress in December or there's a good chance he'll go back to Italy in January.

We should easily beat Norwich the only question is can we score lots of goals or will it be a 1-0 win. Silva should pick an attacking formation despite his usual temptation to play safe. This time I think he will give it a go and attack, he really has no choice, given the position we are in.

Derek @27, we sadly ain't in the same bracket as Spurs et al. Our managers tend come come with relegation on thier CV or from the likes of Preston and Wigan. If Newcastle landed Benitez, why cant Everton do such things?

Nevermind winning silverware, it's makes me wonder if we will ever play in the Champions League even.

The last game before a hellish schedule.

Proverbial "must win".

As I was cracking through the December fixtures of death this morning, I realized we play on December 1st, and then the derby is played on December 4th. Very short rest going into the derby.

The Evil Empire play on November 30th.

Any particular reason they get an extra day of rest before the derby? You gotta be kiddin' me, right? Why do they get an extra day's rest? Seems awfully convenient.

Steve Ferns

How can we possibly go in to a game against the League's bottom team with only one defensive midfielder! We should have the bus parking team out with instructions to kick it into the no-mans' field in the middle if there isn't a pass back to the keeper or a sideways pass. Come on, Mr Silva, you know you have it in you well, from what we've seen so far.

Come on, pull the pin, blow the bugle and CHARGE!

Steve, have a look at Liverpool's fixture list. They play more games than us with Champions league committments and still have to reschedule the world club fixture. We can't use them having one day more off, when their schedule is so busy.
We don't need excuses in advance - we just need to go out and beat them, start their slide and watch Klopp implode in control-freak ego meltdown.

Early morning - - a busy day ahead - - had a late night last night at The Dark house - -70th Birthday Celebrations surrounded by True Blues - - Everton friends going back more then 40 years' and family - - wonderful evening - - and have to leave early this morning - - back at TDH with same gang for the game later - - and tomorrow another Birthday Celebration with family and The Yellow House Gang.
Any TW's feel free to call into TDH before and after the game.

Sitting in my writing room - - and some Satie playing in the background - - everywhere is grey - - the surrounding sky is dull but there are slithers of brightness trying their best to break through - - lines of Turneresque rose coloured yellow illuminating the light grey of The River - - I am told that it will “brighten up later “ and I believe it.
Just stopped and listening to Maria callas - - Carmen - - Wowwww - - spirits lifted - - floating above the grey - - Into The Blue - - reminds me of Old Percy Bysshe Shelley - - another great Evertonian:

“Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.
Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the belovèd's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.”
I think it's time for a bit of Walt Whitman here on TW:
“THAT music always round me, unceasing, unbeginning--yet long untaught
I did not hear;
But now the chorus I hear, and am elated;
A tenor, strong, ascending, with power and health, with glad notes of
day-break I hear,
A soprano, at intervals, sailing buoyantly over the tops of immense
waves,
A transparent bass, shuddering lusciously under and through the
universe”
Or maybe:
“I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.”

So although it is only 10.00 - - I have to go now - - to meet my daughter - - Helen who has been going to the match with me for nearly 40 years' - - and then onto TDH.

As always, I look forward to going to the game - - the experience - - the sheer delight of meeting friends to forget the worries of the world for a while and talk only Everton for most of the day - - a delight - - a joy.

I am reminded of Joni Mitchell - - a regular at TDH - - she sings and plays guitar and I play harmonica in the background:

“Hey now, now
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
Til its gone
They paved paradise
To put up a parking lot
Why not?
They paved paradise
To put up a parking lot
Hey hey hey
Paved paradise
To put up a parking lot”
Sitting for a moment letting My Soul and Spirit Float into The Mystic - - its what I do to get me through each day - - no matter what life throws at me - - poetry, music, art - - -words and music - -and silence and images and colours - - colour suggesting mood and dreams and words and music - - where “sound and perfume swirl in the evening air” - - and now:
“Day after day I'm more confused
Yet I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
(Won't you take me away?)
Beginning to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
I'm countin' on you to carry me through
And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along makin' me strong”
Say It's All right - - have a good time cos It's All right.

Cosmic grooves sent over the astral from New Brighton to All Blues Everywhere - - keep it cool - - with a firm and warm handshake - - I tieing up my boots going back to my roots - - George.

I believe that Marco Silver will put out a team that is as big on experience as it is on form and fitness.
We have a very busy and tough looking December looming up and it would be folly to risk aggravating injuries by playing today with men who are not fully fit.
Young Kean will come on in the second half when the points are safe and will score to cap a wonderful afternoon and put us in Blue Heaven.

These are the sort of games we lose or draw though, aren't they ? when an out of form team comes with a bit of fight - and we expect to win easily.

We'll have to earn the win, I hope he puts out a team that is willing to.

Unfortunately we are kind of stuck with Schneiderlin in midfield now, aren't we ?

This has to be a game for DCL - Norwich have been conceding lots of aerial chances. Unless Zimmermann is back then they'll be playing with a DM at CB again.

Their LB is out too, so they'll have someone very inexperienced there.

Norwich haven't actually scored a league goal away from home since the first league game of the entire season, when they 'won the second half' at Mordor! However, most unusual results seem to happen immediately after an international break...

Come on lads

At home against the bottom team, surely Silva has change system and played just the one holding midfielder. Play 2 up front.

If we lose this today he has to go

The bookies have us as massive favourites for today. For George's favourite score , 4-0 is only 14/1.
We've only scored 13 goals all season !!

Happy birthday, George, and may you have much to celebrate. Had one this week myself -- I'm 7 years behind ya and hoping to reach your milestone.

Drift Away is one of my anthems as well... the essential Tom Rush version, if you please, when the rain is pounding the windows.

Norwich a very small team. Get on Mina to bag today.

Was at the Southampton game. Holgate looked good. Walcott was good too. Todun worked but didn't offer a cutting edge. Davis started well but faded. Scnieds did ok. Sidibe struggled with pace but did well going forward. Mina was always talking a cajoling others around him Richy tried hard to stay on his feet and did well. Iwobi did well coming on. I expect the same team. Saints were very poor. Expect a comfy win.

We badly - nearly said desperately - need 3 points today and should be good enough to get them.
This is Everton though isn't it, what we are used to is a slap in the chops at times like this!
So its behind the couch again for me.

Happy Birthday George.

Here's hoping the blues don't ruin your day. We wouldn't would we ?

Full support.
Onward Evertonians. 💙

Jamie @46 / Steve @47 will you be reasonable, jeez, lol.

Liverpool has a CL game on Nov 27th. So they have 3 matches in 7 days. Maybe if we were used to watching European football, we wouldn't come up with these insane conspiracy theories.

Edit: I see that Eddie @49 pointed that out already.

George @50 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Happy birthday George. I met you at TDH at our last home game v Burnley last season.

Let's hope for a win today, which should be within our capabilities.

No plans to get over from DC just yet but when I do I look forward to a pint with you.

Steve

Happy birthday(s) George and Mike. Let's celebrate with a win and convincing performance. Seemingly still a lot to play for this season, not least the confidence of prospective BMD investors. One of these years our goal will be to challenge for the title again but need some signals of progression in the club's mantra from the top down that's reflected on the park.
Hope our lot were sat down to watch Howard's Way followed by a visit from Peter Reid this past week. Could do with an infusion of passion and brawn.

Pickford
Sidibe Holgate Mina Digne

Walcott Sigurdsson Richarlison

Don't understand what direction Silva is taking with his selections style wise. Understand Norwich are relatively small statured, but Tosun??

Two defensive midfielders & one striker at home to Norwich. It just never changes. What's Pochettino up to nowadays?

Silva does not change a winning team. When has he, and why would he? We have players on the bench that will want to make an impression. As they should.

We need to win today. If we don't l want Silva gone. If he does... well then l can see him getting another 4 games. We all know how well we did last season during a run of tough games. Weird season.

All the best to Mike and George.
2-0 Everton. Walcott first scorer (he's been due a goal for about 3 months).

Paul(79)

I think Tosun has played his way into the team, he's in there on merit along with Davies, Sidibe, Holgate, Walcott etc

I'm less enamoured at seeing a midfield 3 with Sigurdsson and Schneiderlin in it. Davies is going to need a strong back carrying those 2. Hopefully Sigurdsson can find some form. I've given up on Schneiderlin...

Silva wont put a team out without a holder in MF regardless who we're playing. Drives me effin nuts

85 Posted 23/11/2019 at 14:10:57
The worst part is that it's still likely we'll win, but 1) I doubt we put it to bed early, meaning he won't put Kean on until late, if at all, and 2) it's going to be an ugly game
Derek Knox
86 Posted 23/11/2019 at 14:11:43
So it looks like we're starting with ten men, bloody Schneiderlin, how negative can you get?

Where's Silva's sense of derring-do? Oh forgot, he doesn't have it, sooner he's gone the better.

Sigurddson and Schneiderlin play...I'll come on here to eat humble pie if we win, but jeez that annoys me.

88 Posted 23/11/2019 at 14:12:40
Danny @83 he has no choice but to play Schneiderlin, I don't think we can fault him there. But insisting on Sigurdsson over Iwobi is an awful decision. As for Tosun, he's not the guy you want playing against a high-pressing team. He doesn't have the pace, simple as that. Not that anyone cares, but based on 90-minutes, his offensive attack numbers are worse than DCL's too.
