Pereira defends his record on unprecedented call with Sky Sports

Vitor Pereira took the unusual step of pitching his credentials for the Everton job with a live phone call with Sky Sports this afternoon as the club's search for a new manager verges on farce.

The Portuguese re-emerged as the favoured candidate to succeed Rafael Benitez late last night with reports in the media that he could be announced as the new Blues boss before the end of the week.

However, amid a backlash from supporters that included graffiti on a wall at Goodison Park against Pereira's appointment and in favour of Frank Lampard, the Daily Mail's website claimed that the 53-year-old was considering withdrawing from the running.

In his conversation with Sky, Pereira indicated that he felt his interviews with Everton officials went well and that he had laid out what he felt he could bring to the role. He also defended his performance at 1860 Munich five years ago and implored supporters to look at his overall record.

“I've had more than one interview with different people,” he explained. "We discussed everything. I gave my point of view about the club. What we talk about in interviews we keep with us. What I can say to you was that the feedback was a good feedback.

"I think they were enthusiastic about what I proposed to them — an intense, pressing game with possession. We need to give confidence again to these players, to approach the fantastic supporters again.

“I think the first decision from the manager in the club is to bring again the organisation, the way to press and the intensive game I saw a few years ago. To me, to watch at Goodison, to show other teams Goodison is a fortress and it's difficult to play.

“They have other candidates. I understand this is the time for decisions. They have told me to wait for the decision and to be calm. They are grateful for interviews and that was all.”

A journeyman manager since leaving Porto in 2013, Pereira is a controversial appointment with supporters because of his chequered record that includes that short stint with 1860 who were relegated from 2. Bundesliga under his stewardship. He has had a couple of unspectacular stints with Fenerbahçe but won titles in Greece and China.

“In my opinion, some of the critics are not for me because they do not know me very well. They do not know my work or me personally. I have worked in a lot of countries and at different levels. I've got several titles. I understand the feeling of the supporters because in the last few years they didn't get results.

“Of course, this is the first time in my career that I see this kind of things," he continued in reference to the graffiti at Goodison. "Never in my career have I seen these comments. My CV speaks for itself. I think these [criticisms] are not directly [aimed at] me. It's something to do with [the environment]. I don't take this as a personal attack."

“This passion is the power of the club. The spirit of the supporters can change the game. The passion in football can be on a positive side or a negative side. What a manager should do is bring the positive side.

“If you look at the top managers in the world, we have titles in different countries. Teaching young players. I started my career with 8 years in Porto. In Munich, it was a very difficult money situation, they were relegated because of the money, the money to pay the players. You must look at the titles I've won. You must look at the positives.

"I have built my career with passion, organisation, competence. This is what I can offer to the club. I give 100% of me, football for me is 24 hours. This is my life, my passion. All of my career I have worked under pressure. The pressure is to be at the best level.”

"I still want the job of course, now it's a club decision. I will move forward with my life. If they want me, they must call me.”

I suppose given the reports in various outlets saying he was ready to withdraw his application for the job, he has had to inform the general public and those who interviewed him, that he's still interested.

I can't see Lampard coming to Goodison for a short-term contract, so my guess is it will end up being Pereira who gets the gig.

Coming on Sky to try and justify your record speaks of desperation. Hopefully Moshiri and Kenwright will come to their senses for once and appoint Lampard.

Listened to Pereira on Sky. To me it sounds as though somebody's given him a list of bullet points to get the fans onside. This stinks of a PR exercise, set up by Moshiri. Could be my suspicious mind but I think this proves that he's a nailed-on cert for the job.

I agree; I think he feels like it's slipping through his fingers...

Any manager who does an interview before being chosen is trying to influence and should have his application withdrawn.

Knowing our board, they'll probably mark it as a sign of his passion. Not for me even more so now..

Nothing against the man, I just don't believe he's right for the position given where we find the club right now.

Chaos reigns. An owner with more cash than sense. Super agents seemingly making the decisions. The board all singing from different songs sheets (and seriously out of tune to boot). The fan base so disillusioned – some like rabid dogs waiting to pounce on whoever gets the poisoned chalice.

Who the hell would want it?

It makes the Ukrainian situation look a doddle. In both scenarios, flat jackets are a prerequisite.

Divine intervention required methinks.

Thought he was onto a winner, good package, including a good pay-out if it didn't work out. Well, it is slipping through his fingers now, after him thinking he had the job.

Intense pressing game??? You need to have the players and be able to coach them to do it. Everton have had neither.

The Everton situation has become like a circus for the media. I think they are enjoying it, making us look stupid. Moshiri looks more and more like an idiot.

The managerial position is urgent only from the point of view of the transfer deadline next Monday. Even so, I think Kenwright is capable of signing at least 1 midfielder on loan, and then Moshiri can take some time and cast the net wider for the managerial appointment including looking at Favre, Garcia, Kovac, etc.

And at that time, if the Derby situation is not resolved by the Administrators and players are sold under Rooney's nose, that may force his hand and he may become available for consideration as well.

Impossible for us to really know what's going on.

Apparently Nuno Espírito Santo was told he had the job before Benitez got it, the contract simply failed to materialise. The board deciding his football was too negative so they chose dashing, free flowing football aficionado Benitez.

So even at interview and maybe even offer stage the club doesn't know or can't agree on what it's looking for. I'm afraid it's now pot luck.

We are now a reality-TV type of joke... Why not have a poll, let the Sky Sports viewers decide who manages us next. Or an "I'm a Celebrity.." type show where we throw C-list managers into a pit and ask them to eat bugs and decide team formations as we all look on in pity and bemusement..

Old Turkish proverb. “The fish rots from the head”.

The owner needs to sort out the boardroom and strategic decision making ASAP. Any manager that comes in will struggle unless it's fixed. Also, I would fire the PR people and bring in someone who understands PR and change management.

All these names being thrown around by the media are risky but my choice would be one of the young English managers who have had Premier League experience, followed by a tough high press type from the German league. No more Mediterranean managers. The Premier League is a different proposition unless they are backed with the big money and they can attract top talent.

Christy and Mike, yes, this most definitely smacks of desperation on Pereira's part.

Alan #3 and Steve #7, I strongly doubt that Moshiri or the club set this up. Having conducted about 15,000 media interviews myself, I can guarantee that Pereira got no coaching or prep for this. There were no bullet points or notes. His answers were vague, brief and disorganized, the opposite of what any decent PR person would have prepared him to say.

If the media-shy Moshiri didn't countenance this -- and I'm pretty damned sure he didn't -- I predict this will absolutely demolish Pereira's chances. This makes the club and its process look even more incoherent than it did before, and making your future employer look worse is not the way to land the gig.

This guy is a train wreck. Hopefully, he's toast.

If not, and we hire him, we're toast.

Just bizarre. A huge red flag.

Akin to announcing on Facebook your intentions to marry someone after matching on Tinder.

The guy is clearly unstable, and that I the exact opposite of what we need.

When you're in a selection process, publicly speaking to Sky Sports, Live, to waffle about how much you want the job and how much you would be a good choice etc etc. Just shocking.

But the worst thing is, this is also how Moshiri does his business.

I'm not big on any of the names currently linked, but if it was a choice between Lampard and this guy, then Lampard.

Vitor Pereira Sky Interview

His English has improved since I last heard him. He was barely coherent in the past.

To me, he also talked more about his interview process 8-9 years ago with Bill, rather than his more recent interviews.

Scroll down the page for a 90-second video by one of those 'European Football Experts' you've never heard of before.

As I wrote on another thread, the journo mentions he really doesn't have a great reputation in Portugal and that his Porto success was built on the work of Andre Villas Boas rather than anything he did.

I'm just baffled.

We were supposed to identify the kind of manager we wanted. Then draw up a list of suitable candidates. Canvas interest. Conduct interviews. Appoint someone.

Instead we took ideas from the media, conducted the process in public, and ended up with a candidate openly defending himself on live TV.

How do we do this?

What is happening to sport? It's not politics or something else as important is it?

I still think it would have been a better option for the potential manager to have kept his own counsel until the vacancy was filled.

As for this interview, well to my mind it wasn't quite the train-wreck I was expecting, but it was pretty terrible and a daft thing to do. He's made himself look a bit desperate now, and the more this goes on, the more I warm to the idea of Frank Lampard. I never thought I'd say that.

As I said elsewhere – if Bill loves this club, he needs to resign now and state that he totally disagrees with the appointment of Periera and that it is being driven by Kia Joorabachian, a friend of Moshiri*.

At that point, his life time reputation at this club will rise a few percentage points (not enough for some, I accept) and he may so scare Moshiri not to appoint him knowing he has now lost total connection with the club and supporters.

* I'd better not mention they are both have Iranian heritage as that is adding 2+2 and suggesting the answer is 4, when in truth it probably is and could be seen as racist.

I'm uncertain about the worthiness of any of the candidates but the one thing that is essential is that we cannot afford the luxury of giving the new man 10 or so games to "assess the squad". That'd be too long to avert disaster.

We Evertonians know that certain players, for a variety of reasons, are not up to it. The new man needs to hit the ground running. I'm sure Lampard is already aware of the strengths and shortcomings of our squad as he will be fully up to date with the English game.

Having a foreign manager who takes time to adjust to the Premier League and attempts to instantly implement a new philosophy, will be disastrous. You do that at the start of the season – not half way through it – so that you have time to fix things if it goes wrong. Time is a commodity we don't have right now.

Mike Gaynes
61 Posted 26/01/2022 at 23:35:42
Jay #34, my "train wreck" comment was less about the content of the interview than the fact that he gave it at all, clearly without preparation or the approval of his desired employer. If you're gonna do that, you'd better do it very, very well.

He didn't. The interview was awkward and not very enlightening. His answers were off-the-cuff and tended to be either jarringly short or meandering. The obvious intent was to lay out his case for being the manager of Everton, and in that, it failed miserably.

Nobody would hire this guy based on that conversation with Sky. Nobody.

Thank God for your comment. I swear to God I'm so sick and fucking tired of the 'Kenwright Out' crew. Criers that seem to have nothing to offer than a jump on the bandwago opinion. Moshiri holds far, far more responsibility for the shitshow we are experiencing, than Bill.

How many of you have been to any of the board meetings. You know what Bill does on a day to day basis in terms of the 'ruining' of the club? No. Didn't think so. It's fans like these genuinely make me reconsider almost 40 years of support.

There's really no pleasing some people and I think some just want to complain about and stir the pot. Sack the board? What the fuck will that achieve, especially now when we need stability? Naw, fuck it just sack everybody, brilliant logic.

I agree we need change, but now is not the time. And if anything needs to change it's not the chairman, it's the owner and whoever is in charge of recruitment and strategic planning.

Sorry about the rant but I'm so fed up with this shite. I get the frustration of fans, but it's for the most part very inaccurately directed.

All this "Bill Out" stuff is so boring, redundant and sounds like little more than a personal vendetta with little merit. With every year that Kenwright's power and control diminishes, we've gotten deeper in trouble, on and off the pitch, yet it's all his fault and he's destroying the club. What?

If you want to blame Bill for anything, it's that he was involved in bringing in the wrong Billionaire, but like all of us, couldn't have envisaged anyone being so inept at chucking money at a club.

I hate to say it but we're in this mess for the long haul unless Moshiri decides to just cut his losses and pisses off... but I doubt that's gonna happen any time soon, he's invested too much... or if we get a kick-ass manager that turns things around.

For me, I think Lampard is the best option, but we need to give whoever it is time to actually build something. I know a lot won't agree because it's Bills 'good ole days' but what I'd give for Moyes again, doing a cracking job at West Ham.

Sorry everyone, I just needed to get that off my chest. The chance of me replying to anything else now are about as slim as us qualifying for the Champions League. Ragged, stressed and just finished a mamoth day at work. You're all getting the brunt of my venting, haha.

Moshiri has ploughed money into the club, I get he has not been a success so far, we can say it is not getting better on his watch, I will totally accept that. But what I will not accept is the 20 years before he was here, cannot and should not be put down to him.

This great football club has been stagnated, ever since our Chairman stepped in, some are still defending our chairman, how can anyone possibly defend over 20 years of punching above our weight, accept this shite and feel pride in "The People's Club."

Our club has been rotting away, long before Moshiri came.

The board have to accept full responsibility of how disgraceful our demise has become over the last 20 years, we are being run like a charity shop.

Without Moshiri, the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock would have been a no go, we would still be cap in hand, begging Tesco to find us a stadium.

Until this board are removed, and professional people, with the knowledge how to run a football club are brought in, nothing will change.

To have a Chairman wetting himself with excitement on trying to bring Martinez back says it all, he will throw anyone under the bus, blame everyone else. Oh yes, I cannot doubt his love for Everton, but that alone is not enough to keep onboard, after so many years of failure.

Moyes more than anyone got this club stable, buy decent players, sell them on, buy more players, sell them on again, it's how Kenwright survived. He was very lucky to have Moyes working on a sell-to-buy basis.

So sorry for anyone who still has full support for our board and chairman.

Rian, your self-confessed rant and the work stresses you allude to suggest to me that you urgently need help from a psychiatrist, or even a hypnotist if you see any merit at all in what Kenwright has done to our club in the decades he's been either 100 or 95% in charge.

If you haven't noticed we're on the verge of relegation.

People on here with experience working for Everton point to the total dysfunction for yonks from Kenwright and very latterly Moshiri, and business-savvy others point to similar operational dysfunction going back decades, under Kenwright directly.

Still, if Kenwright is your version of a good ol' Toffee, you're more than entitled to place a picture of him on your bedroom wall, presumably right next to Alex Nyarko's.

Mike @60,

Everton would and will.

Rain Magee... David Moyes done a good to fair job... never won a trophy.. don't think he ever won at Anfield even when they were as shit as us... he will do the same at West Ham.

As for this whole debacle of possibly our new manager spouting the Everton sound bites... it's laughable.

If we go down we all have to take responsibility... too little too late to get the board out.

Who ever takes the managers job is fucked either way... they are starting the race with a handicap of crap players who don't have the pride for a fight

Good luck to all the fans who live in eternal hope that we will one day be at the top.

I have been trying to keep my spirits up over Everton but this latest saga is draining me.

Moshiri, Usmanov, Kenwright, Barrett-Baxendale or this character Kia Joorabchian are not capable of solving our immediate problem.

What I want for Everton is for a manager to come in who has enough fire in his belly to get these players playing to their full potential. If he can do that we will live to fight another day.

So we are down to Pereira and Lampard it seems. My question is, given the make up of our current squad, who out of the two of them is most likely to be able to deliver that?

Lampard has missed out on four potential jobs since he left Chelsea – notably Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Watford have passed him over.

Putting aside the question of whether our board have a clue about football, I can't help asking myself the question: Why?

Everton should have held all interviews and candidates names in confidence, merely announcing, when asked, that the process was under way and hope to be in a position to make an announcement very soon and in the meantime the caretaker manager will continue.

If nothing else, all those involved from the club should then know who is leaking confidential matters. This just feels like somebody trying to placate the supporters rather than getting on with the job.

Alan J, don't assume all, or even most, of the leaks are coming from inside the club.

The managerial candidates all have agents, reps, advocates and hangers-on who are eager to get the word out whenever they are brought in for an interview. And if no interview has been arranged, they're planting stories with their favorite reporters in their home countries, trying to make it happen.

In fact, this guy Joorabchian apparently knows how to keep things close to the vest. Nothing about either of his two candidates, Cannavaro and Pereira, leaked out until the day they were interviewed.

Mike (#71);

Without wishing to sound too defensive, I did say "would know who was leaking" but did not necessarily mean from inside the club alone. But I take your point, although it might not always be in their client's best interest.

Any thoughts on him being alone in accepting a short contract with an option for the club to offer a further season?

It has to be repeated that, whoever gets the job, their appointment is going to be a risk given the circumstances that the club finds itself in.

None of the candidates mentioned would be on a hit list of the Top 4; we just have to come to terms with the reality that teams in the bottom of the Premier League have to shop at one of the discount stores and hope they get lucky.

If we could get the former Lyon manager at the end of the season, I would let Duncan continue until then.

Christoper #73,

Unfortunately you're absolutely right. I don't envy whoever gets the job. It's a mess. The amount of spinless deadwood that needs replacing is gonna be a struggle, as too many aren't up for the fight we're in.

Don, blah blah yawn yawn. I hope you're feelings have recovered from someone having a different opinion than yours. Chin up lad. 'a good ol toffee' is the last thing I want, that's been part of our problem; combined with utter hypocrisy from some of our fan base. I'd rather someone with fire in their belly and the expertise and knowledge of how to successfully run a football club.

I think we're looking at a Barry Horne special again.

Having a Sky interview before you are appointed is very bad form. (Unless he has the job in the bag!)

Lampard now sounds like a very sensible choice. If EFC were more cunning, Periera could have been a left-field candidate used to make an ordinary appoinment seem better; however, I don't think our club are that sophisticated.

Whilst Bill Kenwright has built his power base over the years and cronyism rules in the corridors of Goodison Park, the Royal Liver Building and Finch Farm, the Moshiri influence is more worrying.

His associates and contacts fill me with dread. His letters to season-ticket holders, his chats with the odious TalkSport's Jim White, and messages through Sky Sports News.

This is how a millionaire living in Monaco imagines how you communicate with your fans... The future of our great club is under serious threat.

Can we all just calm the fuck down please regarding Pereira. I cannot believe he did that interview off his own back, if he is hired then we know for sure Mosh set it up.

Some of you are treating this guy like a leper. He is not without pedigree, I think what annoys me most about all this as it has now propelled Lampard into some sort of glowing stand-out candidate in the eyes of some of you. Careful with that pedestal: only one way to go when you are sitting on it and that ain't up.

If Mosh put Pereira up to the interview then it has backfired and Pereira has been wronged in this situation. I feel for the guy to be honest. He may yet come and is going to be met with vitriol from so called fans who are really angry about something and someone else entirely.

Lots of displaced anger here and it may well put off any potentially good candidates for this shit-show of a job. I'm going to lie in a darkened room until its all over.

Definitely a set-up opportunity I think and I don't blame him for doing it.

If it wasn't a planned thing by the club to try and get the fans on side then it could be that he is frustrated by how long it is taking.

It was all very bizarre, you would tell your missus or best mate how an interview went not the whole media world!

Everton is just shambolic, very badly run and unable to make timely decisions which is why this type of thing is creeping in. Amateur-ish.

Don't panic; as they say in Dad's Army. We have a squad of very good players; from England's goalkeeper to Brazil's striker. We just need to get them to gel.

Leave Ferguson in charge till the end of the season; take time and make a good, long-term appointment.

Minimum: a new manager with something on his CV.

Am I the only person who doesn't want Lampard appointed????

Dennis, England's goalkeeper has already been relegated once with Agent Moyes. The squad has some (but not many) good players. The table doesn't lie.

Andrew @ 80,

You're not... but it's starting to look like we are being conned into a position where he gets it and we all say "Well, it could have been worse..."

I told you all that he was a bit mad, outspoken in all things and at least he ain't a boring bastard (like so many nowadays) and wants the job!

Just get him signed up 'cos the real hard work starts now, we need wins ASAP to stay in the Cup and more importantly the League, we still have three very winnable games in hand.

So let's start getting things done to avoid the unthinkable eh? Let's just support and get behind the new Gaffer and the lads. I am sure we can Rideout (ha) this current storm in our beloved club's history.

I'm hoping he gets the job.
1. He has won things.
2. He's passionate.
3. He plays youth.
4. He sorts defenders out.
These are all things that every supporter has been crying out for. Who says if lampard gets the job he will play youth. He only did it at Chelsea because he had a transfer embargo. As soon as he could he splashed 220 million on Chilwell from Leicester City for £50 million. He was joined by Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva and Hakim Ziyech. I don't think the youth thing stands up really.

Dude is disqualified. Just read excerpts and this stood out:
"“This is the first time in my career that I see this kind of thing” said the former Porto and Fenerbahce manager of the graffiti. “I never had in my career this kind of comment about me. My CV speaks for itself but I think this criticism is not to me, it's the environment now because the club is not in a good position."

You don't fucking say that out loud. Goodbye Vitor.

I've said it before, I'm saying it again; Give the job to him for remainder of the season and then evaluate. At least he has won a tiltle or 2 as a manager (please don't mention 1860 Munich again) and knows how to tighten up a leaking defense! Lampard will still be available come May! Between the 2, Lampard is the more riskier option right now with our league position hovering above the deadtrap.

Not sure why stating that the club is not in a good position should disqualify you? Or giving an interview to say that you think criticism of you is unreasonable?
Everyone can see the club is not in a good position and that is the whole point of the protest groups that have been created. It's not really airing the clubs dirty linen in public and suggests the guy has a firm grasp of what he is getting into.
I quite liked the idea of Lampard in the summer, definitely contrasted to appointing Benitez, but now that would appear to be the biggest gamble. Don't know anything about Pereira, but if he is not just an egomaniac and is still backing himself then I don't see that we are likely to attract anyone significantly more qualified who is keen to have a go.
It's a Hobson's choice but it reflects the reality of where the club is at the moment.
I'm just hoping he's not just an unemployed chancer looking for a nice little earner. That's what the interview process should be finding out and eliminating.

We need to hire a Director of Football first. In the meantime, Dunc will do until he has a chance to go through the running of the football side of the club. Set a system and a plan from juniors to the first team, then hire a manager that fits that system and plan.

The managers that are out of work now, will be there at the end of the season as well. We need to get this right; otherwise, we will be doing the same thing in 12 months.

Let's set this up right now instead of chasing managers who are available now, without any thought to the footballing structure of the club. Development of the players from juniors to the first team, playing the same system throughout the teams.

Ferguson should be able to keep us up and, at this stage, that's all anybody has to do; it's not like we are challenging for the Top 6 and who knows? Ferguson might surprise everybody.

We have to hire a director of Football now and that will give him at least 5 months to get the footballing side of things sorted, allowing him to watch first-hand training sessions and matches.

He then has to get together with the board and agree on a playing style followed by a training structure that is implemented from youth to the first team and is focused on that playing style. Then hire a manager that they feel will develop and enhance the footballing direction that the club goes in.

The DoF would have had a decent amount of time to put recommendations to the new manager of which players should be moved on to accommodate the new footballing direction the club goes in. If we have to take huge losses on offloading players to bring new ones in, then so be it.
