Lampard expected to block any predatory moves for Calvert-Lewin

Thursday, 02 May 2024 34comments  |  Jump to last

Ahead of his appointment as the new Everton manager, reports are claiming that Frank Lampard will push back against any moves from other clubs seeking to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Monday's transfer deadline.

The striker, who has only returned this month from a 4-month layoff with a serious muscle injury, has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle over the past few weeks, with claims that the Gunners had agreed a £60m fee and were hoping to lure him away before the window shuts.

Lampard is believed to be a big admirer of Calvert-Lewin and has reportedly made it clear to the club's hierarchy that he must not be sold, particularly so close to the deadline, as he hopes to build the team around the powerhouse England striker.

Calvert-Lewin himself has made no secret of his ambitions and there are fears at Everton that the club's failure to push on towards Champions League qualification over the past few years will have him looking at other opportunities more likely to deliver him success, and some sources already talk of possible moves for him this summer.

However, the appointment of Lampard rather than a more controversial choice like Vítor Pereira is seen as a positive step towards keeping Calvert-Lewin at the club.

I wouldn't sell him this window. But £60 million in the summer I would.

Selling Calvert-Lewin, either now or in the summer, would be lunacy in my opinion.

You don't sell your top scoring, England international striker unless it's to ward off administration, which is one problem we don't have.
Who would you get to replace him for that money?

Interested to know why you would sell him in the summer for £60m. Who could we get for that money?

And furthermore, who would want to come to a team who sells their top players. Nice to see ambition on here still.

Neil@3. I would only sell because we will need the money in the summer for future transfers. We will still probably be over our FFP.

£60 million in summer, yes, but as Paul says not in this window.

We could get an Italian international from Juventus for nothing, or are we not supposed to tell Frank about him?

Why would you even consider selling Calvert-Lewin, even for £60M?

Yes, it's a big return on the investment, but has anyone else seen how hard it is to find a decent striker? Tosun? Kean? Rondon?...

But it makes no sense to sell our best players. We have plenty of deadwood who we could sell, that’s surly like saying we’ve given up trying to become a big team. There is no player of his calibre who would seriously consider coming to us at the moment. So saying we could improve our team is nonsense if we’re going to become one of them teams who rollover and let the big teams shaft us over by selling them our star players

£60 million in the summer makes sense but it will be a lot less than that if he doesn't start scoring goals again and soon.

Yes I agree, it would be lunacy to sell him now when we don't have many attacking options, but in the summer for £60 million would seem fair.

The only thing is that the money being offered is just paper talk at the moment and realistically the way the market is at the moment would probably be much less.

It'll be hard to keep Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin in the summer. But it'll give the new manager a lot of scope to sort out a team with the out-of-contract drain on resources.

I'm not keen on letting Calvert-Lewin leave. Expect Richarlison will go for circa £50M or maybe a touch more. That plus the £28M Juve owe us for Kean will fund a decent spending spree.

We don't need to sell Calvert-Lewin so we shouldn't unless a huge bid comes in. £60M is not a huge bid.

To replace Calvert-Lewin would probably cost more than £60M, that's if we want a similar type of player or even an upgrade. For fuck's sake, Newcastle just paid £25M for someone over 30 years old, and that's the type of player we will end up with if Calvert-Lewin goes.

Keep him at all costs, and the only time to start worrying is if he hands in a transfer request.

Shouldn't even be contemplating this; same for Richarlison.

Some short memories on here, remember the last striker we cashed in on and how long we went without anyone half-decent in that position?

We need to keep Calvert-Lewin at all costs. Hopefully we can bring young Dobbin through and Simms back from his loan at Hearts in the summer.

We might have to sell Calvert-Lewin but, if we get our act together, should be able to replace him and begin to rebuild our squad with the proceeds.

Most clubs sell to build, especially clubs like ours, the RS bought Fabinho and Alison after selling Coutinho.
We just need the strategy and plans in place to make it a successful way for us to move forward as a club, eg, Richarlison leaves for £60M, Gordon comes in for zero, use the money to buy player x... Like our neighbours have managed to do so successfully.

No sale. This window or the summer.

Lampard will be wanting to build a team.

I think Mina will be gone in June as he has a year left on his contract so that is sound business. PSG will be in for Richarlison, he may well want to go there and play CL footy with his mate Neymar Jnr.

We need to be looking then to building our midfield. Frank will be onto it. We need a N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Kelvin Philips, Declan Rice, now, but it’s going to be June. We may have to pay big for the right player. That’s if we can source one. Then replace Mina with a new quality CB.

There is a route to building a new strong Everton, but selling DCL shouldn’t be on the agenda. Every player has his price but I’ll guarantee Arsenal won’t be paying it.

It would be madness to sell any of our best players right now, as there's a mountain to climb to stay in this league. Calvert-Lewin, to me, doesn't look fully fit and dare I say looks to have his mojo, compared to last season.

Regardless of every ones views on Lampard coming in, at least hopefully now this season can take some solid shape and Everton can turn the corner from bring on the edge of the drop zone.

Onwards Evertonians.

No game this weekend but tonight is worth a few beers if we've got a new manager, and some more if there's a few players arrive before the window shuts.

Everton are that short of good strikers, Frank will not want any changes, as a better one coming in is unlikely.

Calvert-Lewin isn't as valuable in the transfer market as most think. On the ground, he has poor finishing ability. His strength is one touch, which Ancelotti identified. Ans attempted to get him in position. Something that Calvert-Lewin does not realise the importance of.

Lampard will not be building a team around Calvert-Lewin.

Didn't he sign a new contract? He's only 24, if we have any ambition and want to move forward, why would we sell him or Richarlison.

I agree with Lampard, who'd you replace him with...? Rondon, and a top striker would cost you more than £60M.

Lampard will not have any say in the matter. The 2020-21 financial results will be out soon and they don't make pleasant reading. Selling the crown jewels will unfortunately be necessary.
Tony Hill
24 Posted 30/01/2022 at 16:58:47
I think that's right, John @23. But Lampard should know it and we need to start being astute with our dealings and we also have to build from within. Easy said, of course, but longer term it will be to our benefit.
Rob Halligan

Christy, Calvert-Lewin is contracted until June 2025, so there's certainly no rush to sell him.

Robert #14, the Juve money for Kean won't arrive until June 2023, per news reports. Not this summer.

If it is Arsenal, we should say 60 million plus take back Iwobi and return the 30 million we paid for him. 90 million minimum! I don’t believe DCL and Richarlison play well together. We need to encash on one of them to build the squad. Hopefully El Ghazi has a storming season with us and proves his worth. Then we can let go of Richarlison and Mina and build from there.
Will Mabon
28 Posted 30/01/2022 at 20:49:08
Ajay, what is the logical basis of this let go of and build from there?

A team is built by working towards populating it with as many of the best, most suitable players possible. This involves replacing the lower quality players or unsuitable players with better, whilst keeping the better players, surely?

You're not the only one that says/has said this so not having a personal go at you - but I've never seen this world where teams sell their better players then somehow magically find better or more equal-quality players with the money.

You said it yourself there; "Hopefully El Ghazi has a storming season...". But what if he doesn't?

The team should be coached and structured to use Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, not just flog them off. They've worked well before.

We need to keep the crown jewels. We need to offload the old and crocked and build a quality squad if we want to get into the top six. That means competition for each place in the matchday team. We have suffered from lack of competition and complacency for far too long.
Andrew Keatley
30 Posted 31/01/2022 at 08:50:04
Eddie (29) - Tub-thumping rhetoric is all well and good on an internet forum, but it has no real practical application in the world of Premier League football, where the bottom line is inescapable. Yes, we need to offload underperforming players, but those players will not bestow us with the funds we will need to rebuild.

The reality is that any and all of our best players are for sale - particularly at the higher end of their market price - and once we've accepted that then the focus has to be on acquiring a group of players that can give the club a greater framework from which to compete in the top half of the league.

If the price was right, I’d sell. I’m not sure £60m for a young England international forward is the right price though!

Putting my Football Manager cap on, I’d sign someone like Brereton-Diaz from Blackburn as an immediate replacement, and put efforts into finding the next DCL (easy, right!) and sign a couple of young options. A strategy along those lines would leave us with a considerable chunk of change to help with the balance sheet.

I don’t like selling good players either, but we are where we are.

Barry Rathbone

Trouble is, we have to sell to improve. The neighbours do it regularly but, for some reason, we just don't seem capable.

Plus, in today's game unless at the, very top players seem to lose the appetite after 3 years... presumably they get complacent. Deffo sell Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

If Arsenal are looking for a forward, we could sell them Rondon. He's a good player – just scored a hat-trick for Venezuela.

It totally baffles me that any supporter would want to or be prepared to sell the club’s top scorer from last season, aged 24! for £60m. This after nurturing him from the age of 17, to become understudy to the countries number 9 & one of the best strikers in Europe or indeed the world, why? If we want to challenge the top six we need to keep our top players, pay them what there worth & build a team over the next 3 years. DCL in my opinion is crucial to that, alongside others who are under the age of 27 such as Pickford, Alli, Richarlison, Gray, Gordon, Godfrey, Branthwaite, Patterson etc. Have some ambition dare to dream, continually selling your best players ultimately leads to you just treading water. I think FL will use that above as a nucleus & build for the future from there, I’m optimistic (finally) that things might just get better. Get behind him & our youngsters we might just be onto something COYB, UTFT.
