Patterson makes late cameo for Scotland

Nathan Patterson got his first competitive minutes since the first week of 2023 when he came on as a substitute for Scotland against Cyprus last night.

The fullback replaced Aaron Hickey with 10 minutes to go of his country's 3-0 win over Cyprus in Euro 2024 qualifying, the latest step in his recovery from a knee injury sustained in Everton's home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on 3rd January.

Patterson has been in action for the Blues' Under-21s side recently as he works his way back to full fitness and could be ready to be included in Sean Dyche's matchday squad as early as next week when the Premier League programme resumes with Tottenham Hotspur coming to town.

His recovery could come as a welcome boost given that Seamus Coleman picked up a minor thigh problem in Everton's 2-2 draw at Chelsea last time out and missed the Repubilc of Ireland's friendly win over Latvia last Wednesday.

Coleman is to be given every chance of being fit for the Euros qualifier against France tomorrow but Dyche will be keeping a weather eye on the situation as he prepares for the visit of Spurs seven days later.

Meanwhile, Blues youngster Tom Cannon scored on his debut for Ireland Under-21s in their friendly win over Iceland.

We signed Patterson as a player with potential. Fifteen months later, that is what he remains. He has played so little first-team club football that he only needs one more international appearance for his caps to match the 13 appearances he has made for each of Rangers and us.

Hopefully Dyche, his coaching team and the senior players will help the player manage the huge leap to regular first-team action. For a club in dire financial straits, we paid a significant sum for a player who has yet to make a tangible impact.

Time is on Patterson's side but, in the meantime, we must be very thankful Seamus has been able to maintain his high standards.

There is always a worry when a Blue plays international football that he will come back injured.
With our 2 right backs it is doubly worrying. One is very much a veteran. The other has had repeated injury issues.
If the run out in Scotland helps the lad get back to match fitness it will be seen as beneficial. But, I hope the club team can work on his conditioning to help fend off future periods of injury.
As for Seamus. Wrap him in cotton wool and thank god we have him. Legend.

Seamus has been brilliant for Everton in the last couple of months both as a player and captain but I really hope that he doesn't play against France for the country he loves, this last fortnight should have been a welcome relief from the stress and strain of playing top class football and a time to gather his strength and concentrate his mind on Everton the club I love above any other, apologies to the many Irish fans on ToffeeWeb, if he plays let's hope he comes back fit to play for us.

I agree with that sentiment Dave.

Seamus has rolled up the sleeves and rolled back the years, but we need to preserve. As promising as Patterson looks, he is young and has spent a fair amount of time sidelined with injury. It could happen again.

This may sound daft, but looking at his physique, it's almost like he's suffering with growing pains.

I guess what I mean is he may still have a bit of physical development to do, which could be impacting him.

Just a thought from Doctor Danny.

I'm somewhat browned off about the PL story so I came over here to get right Btw, did I use that phrase properly Dave? I got it from you

Two things: Dyche knows how to assess long term readiness and Patterson is key to Iwobi's output on the right. If Dyche introduces him at the right time it could solve much of our offence situation. However, both Patterson and Iwobi have issues being effective defenders in Dyche's system. That side will take some time.

Dale (5)Not sure which thread you are referring to, I've looked at most of them but can't see where I've used any phrase, one that comes to mind is “ There's no fool like an old fool” so take no notice of me just to be safe!!

France get a hard-fought 1-0 win at the finish. Coleman was excellent again. Incredible save from the French keeper near the end to prevent an Irish equaliser.

Seriously proud of the lads tonight. Hopefully that'll shut a lot of people up. Need to back it up though.

Fighting spirit from the Irish, even when they where running on empty.

Seamus Coleman 34? To draw parallels with a Moyes phrase about a previous Everton centre forward years ago, he must be an Irish 34.

He was excellent. There was one scenario late in the game where he darted across the pitch to break up a French counter.

What a professional who gives everything every time he walks on the pitch, even when it doesn't come off. Never hides and comes over to the supporters regardless as to whether we are celebrating or giving it both barrels. He won't hide from anything.

Right, get him in an ice bath. Wrap him up, fly him back to Speke and then have him in saunas with foot and hamstring massages at Finch Farm all week.

Great to see Seamus playing out of his skin, and he is having a very good season at all levels of football.

Patterson, has had bad luck, with big injuries in his time at Everton.

I have concerns that he's played for his country ahead of playing for Everton, but I'd like to believe with Dyche, blessing, to prove his fitness.

This raises other questions, and let's see if he's named in any of the squads for the Spurs and United games.

I hope so.

UTFTs!

Any news of Garner?
He was in the England U 21 squad at the weekend.
Think he could be an interesting option on our run in.
