I'm in absolute bits reading that, John, but thank you for writing it.

No, thank you for reading, Jon (I realise it was a lengthy one and took quite a dark turn).

For a long while I refused to even speak about what happened with my son, so I suppose it was a bit of a cathartic exercise on my part to finally write something down.

Tremendous stuff, John. Have been sitting on the train engrossed. Entertaining, poignant and moving.

Thanks.

John (2),

Yes I thought the last episode and this one was about your family and thought the boy who died was your son, didn't want to comment in case I was wrong.

A long and very sad ending for you and your family and especially for your son. RIP.

I think a lot of us are looking at how we introduced our sons into the Everton family now and how they followed up with bringing my grandchildren into this bleedin' mess that is Everton FC.

No regrets myself, I would do it all again, but I have seen us win many trophies as my sons have. But my grandchildren are still waiting for any sign of silverware and that is receding with every passing season. The present is the lowest we have ever been, even 1951 didn't seem as bad as it is now, to me.

So sorry for what you went through with your boy.

John, I think it's helpful to write things down, it helps to crystallise thoughts and feelings. I hope it has been beneficial to you.

I have been hugely fortunate so far in not having such a disaster in my life. We have suffered tragedy in the wider family and at that time a visit to a match at Goodison, mundane as it sounds, brought family and friends together.

All being well, a week on Saturday I will be travelling over to Sheffield for the game with my son and his two lads in their Everton shirts. We will travel to the ground with my two sons-in-law, their Dads, and my other grandson who will all be wearing their red and white stripes.

Sometime during the trip, I suspect drink will be taken. I shall raise a glass to you and Damian.
