Season › 2023-24 › General Forum No Pickford as England lose last pre-Euro warm-up 07/06/2024 Share: Gareth Southgate put Aaron Ramsdale in goal for England in their final warm-up game before the Euros in Germany. And Ramsdale was beaten after just 12 minutes as Iceland took the lead. A typically turgid England performance ensued, with Iceland celebrating a rare win at Wembley. Meanwhile, Vitalii Mykolenko tasted action for the first time since the Merseyside derby in April when he turned out for Ukraine for 45 minutes in their 3-1 friendly defeat to Poland. Rob Halligan 3 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:02:38 😂😂😂😂Think I'm a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale, and im 65 years old!! Colin Glassar 4 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:05:19 I don't doubt that England will win this match but, after 10 years in charge, Southgate still doesn't know his strongest XI. A sign of a bang-average manager. Brian Williams 5 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:08:46 Ring ring, ring ring… "Hello?" "Jarrad is that you?" "Err who's this?""It's Gareth Southgate, I think I may have fucked up." Jarrad putting on his mum's voice. "Sorry, our Jarrad's gone on holiday and I've, errrr, he's not taken his mobile with him." Kieran Kinsella 6 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:08:54 ColinIt's crazy. 8 years ago he suddenly decided to bring back 50 year old Ashley Young and try Walker as a third centre-back at the World Cup -- not beforehand. Now, he is toying with playing Arnold as a midfielder and looks like we will get the 33-year-old right-back as a makeshift left-back. Meanwhile, he can't figure out how to utilize Foden properly. I worry Foden will end up as an isolated winger and eventually be displaced by another square peg in a round hole. Colin Glassar 7 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:18:11 Southgate is a serial bottler, eg, Croatia and Italy. With so many brilliant young players available, his teams are dull and boring. And he lets the media choose his squads. Southgate out!! Paul Ferry 8 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:22:36 Southgate's lads would be nowhere right now without Palmer. Southgate needs to learn how to use Foden rather than keep going with his Palace love-in. Colin Glassar 9 Posted 07/06/2024 at 20:47:39 Who's the Geordie beanpole doing the punditry? She makes Shearer sound almost exciting. Paul Ferry 10 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:09:28 Wow, still 1-0, Good job, Gareth lad, you've clearly got it right with your decisions. Rob Halligan 11 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:17:17 So the Cunt (As per Andy Crooks), has only been on as a sub for five minutes, and according to the commentator, has made two chances already. Of course, they were very simple chances which any player could have made, but this commentator makes the Cunt (As per Andy Crooks) sound like he's the best player on earth!! Colin Glassar 12 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:25:54 If I was Bellingham, I'd ask for Spanish citizenship. What a waste of talent this is. Rob Halligan 13 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:39:34 Fucking Shite. 😂😂😂😂The likes of Germany, Spain, France etc must be shaking in their boots at the thought of having face this useless bunch of shit! ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ John Keating 14 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:40:12 Is really anyone interested in England unless they get in the final?Branthwaite out, Gomez in… just sums it up really. Duncan McDine 15 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:40:43 I'm not one for knee-jerk reactions, but Southgate should be sacked immediately. Paul Ferry 16 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:49:14 That was absolutely embarrassingly shocking. Those players were not playing for the Waistcoat Wonder tonight. A worryingly uncommunicative bunch of players if you actually care about the national team. Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 17 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:49:35 After tonight's performance, lucky Jarrad, think yourself lucky. Colin Glassar 18 Posted 07/06/2024 at 21:56:56 Is Mike Bassett available? Eddie Dunn 19 Posted 07/06/2024 at 22:00:07 The players and their manager were complacent.Kane drops off, goes searching, ruins Foden's game. Gordon was lively but on the left always cutting in onto his right foot.Saka came on, looked leggy and off it. Stones looks nice on the ball but he slows the tempo at the wrong times. In fairness to Trent Alexander-Arnold, he injected much-needed pace and tempo during his cameo. I was delighted to see his scuffed daisy-cutter go wide though! The defence looks a shambles. I'm afraid the hype is all wrong. This team should have lost three-nil tonight. Southgate is a total bottler.I expect England to struggle big time against Spain Netherlands, Portugal, France, Germany, etc. Don Alexander 20 Posted 07/06/2024 at 22:07:01 Two accurate attempts on goal in the entire match.Abysmal! Barry Rathbone 21 Posted 07/06/2024 at 22:12:36 I chanced 5 mins of the second half to see if the decades old script had changed – not a chance.Without foreign players to provide a cutting edge, English players are utterly bereft. Reasonable teams cede the ball in the middle of the park then piss themselves laughing at the sideways "going nowhere" passing. Just dreadful. Paul Birmingham 22 Posted 07/06/2024 at 22:18:52 That's a Sunday morning team, and wouldn't win the Ale House League in any country. If this is the end product, then England won't get close in this Euro Tournament. Danny O’Neill 23 Posted 07/06/2024 at 22:23:02 I only had half an eye on it as I was in a different room, so kept popping in to have a look occasionally… it didn't look good. I guess we'll see if they up their game once the tournament starts. For any England supporters travelling, as you come out of the station, head down the "Bahnhof Strasse" until you hit a square. Turn left and there is a good Schalke pub down on the left. You can then come out, turn right, and walk back towards the square but carry straight on and you will pick up the trams.Get off at the "Schalke Mile" just before the stadium or visit on the way back. A few bars there. Once refreshed, you can just hop back on the tram to the Veltins Arena.Coming out and getting back on the trams can be a nightmare with long waits. It might be different as the capacity will be reduced to about 54,000 in comparison to 62,000 plus for league matches due to the difference with safe standing for the latter.Gelsenkirchen isn't the greatest or prettiest of cities, so if you fancy an alternative, Dusseldorf is only about an hour away on the train, 40 minutes from the airport. For you England followers, safe travels and enjoy.Don't forget, if you happen to bump into any Schalke supporters make sure to say "Gluck Auf". It is an old miners greeting, which in English translates to Good Luck. It is common to say it. Tom Bowers 24 Posted 07/06/2024 at 23:08:02 By the way, did England play today?Sure they did and got frozen out by another lousy team. Why don't you quit now, Southgate? Klopp needs a job. Neil Copeland 25 Posted 07/06/2024 at 23:16:09 Tom #27, No idea… but I think Iceland won. Eric Myles 26 Posted 08/06/2024 at 03:23:31 Rob #13, shaking with laughter! Danny O’Neill 27 Posted 08/06/2024 at 06:30:30 England may be narrow favourites, although that may have changed. But I can't see past France, and I've said elsewhere, Germany on home turf will be in the mix.Spain, although also not the force they where? Outside shout, Belgium?Tournament football is all guesswork. In fact football in general is!! Rob Halligan 28 Posted 08/06/2024 at 10:18:51 Good news on Mykolenko, who played 45 minutes for Ukraine last night, and has made their Euro's squad. There were reports after the derby game when he went off with a serious ankle injury that he would miss the Euros. ðŸ‘👠James Marshall 29 Posted 08/06/2024 at 10:33:49 I don't tend to watch tournament warm-up games because they're largely experimental and dull viewing. Saw the news we lost last night, and I can't help feeling unsettled by the defensive issues. We're all biased on here, but not taking Branthwaite seems like a mistake to me. Left-footed, can pass, gets forward, a threat at set-pieces, can play in a 4 or a 3, and is clearly the future.Weird choice from Southgate – also weird him not taking Grealish in my view. Form or no form, you need a wildcard in tournament football and he can be that. Brian Harrison 30 Posted 08/06/2024 at 10:55:13 'Lacklustre' sums up England's performance last night; whether it was because players didnt want to get injured before the tournament started which led to such a poor performance, I don't know. I am not the biggest fan of Grealish but he is way better than Gordon, who looked like a kid stepping up to play with the big boys. Surely there has to be a better option than Trippier at left-back.Southgate leaves out Branthwaite who has played over 30 league games this season, yet includes Gomes and Quansah who have played a lot less. Also includes Mainoo and Wharton who have had less first-team appearances than Branthwaite. And when the subs were made, Alexander-Arnold didn't impress at fullback, the lad still hasn't learnt how to defend. Yes, a lovely passer of the ball and good at free kicks but his main job as full-back is to defend.
