Surely Materazzi would be the choice from that kind of era given what he went on to achieve? John Raftery 2 Posted 27/07/2024 at 15:37:15 Good list, Andy. I would add Colin Todd who was brilliant for Derby but average for us. Eugene Stalker 3 Posted 27/07/2024 at 16:24:55 John #2,I read an interview with Colin Todd only the other month and it was clear he hated his time at Everton. In his own words, he described Everton as a "cold club" and he couldn't wait to get away. Not sure why he thought this but he didn't stay long. Andy Crooks 4 Posted 27/07/2024 at 16:42:40 John, I totally forgot that Colin Todd was with us. My God, Todd, Gough, Ginola and Eto'o!Eugene, I think the biggest asset our club has had in a generation is to be welcoming.Lindstrøm is going to be a star. Alan J Thompson 5 Posted 27/07/2024 at 16:43:32 Would you add Materazzi(?) to that list? Touched by the head of Zinedine Zidane… One of three who played for us and in a World Cup Final. Eugene Stalker 6 Posted 27/07/2024 at 18:51:24 Indeed, Andy, you are right. Steve Hogan 7 Posted 28/07/2024 at 08:12:11 Andy, I'm not sure our 'timing' was wrong.Sadly, we were only in a position to recruit these players when most of them were on the tail end of their careers and available on a free transfer, or certainly cheap enough to match our sparse budget. Denver Daniels 8 Posted 28/07/2024 at 08:50:57 I'll chuck in a well past his prime and aging Mark Hughes. Andy Crooks 9 Posted 28/07/2024 at 10:15:05 How could I have forgotten Norman Whiteside! Les Callan 11 Posted 28/07/2024 at 19:42:24 Kenny Samsom. Paul Hewitt 12 Posted 28/07/2024 at 19:52:26 Wayne Rooney Ian Bennett 14 Posted 28/07/2024 at 19:57:07 JenningsSamsomGoughMatterazziKoeman 👀GascoigneWhitesideRodriguezRooneyLinekerEto'o Dave Dann 15 Posted 28/07/2024 at 19:57:36 Brian Kidd Kevin Naylor 16 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:01:02 Nigel Martyn.Although we got him eventually, we could have had him several years earlier but somehow let him slip through our fingers. Tony Abrahams 17 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:07:15 In his first season at Everton, I'd say Richard Gough was at least as good a central defender as any of the other great centre-halves I've witnessed playing for the Blues. If my memory is correct, he was outstanding at Anfield the last time we won there with a crowd present inside the stadium. He was the one player that I cursed we didn't sign much earlier in his career but then he signed another contract and was injured for much of his second season. Kieran Kinsella 18 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:14:55 Tony,Gough was over here playing for Kansas City when we brought him in and people thought he was finished after a mediocre spell at Spurs years earlier. But you're absolutely correct: he was brilliant for us and pushing 40. We always seemed to have one really good centre-back in those lean years of the 90s: Watson, Gough, Weir. Each played a major role in keeping us afloat. Tony Abrahams 19 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:25:47 I think the reason why everyone has been very impressed with Jarrad Branthwaite is because he has got such great composure and his positional sense is also very good for one so young. These were the two main attributes that Richard Gough brought into a poor side, Kieran.Going off track (sorry Andy!) but the signing of O'Brien, to compete with two other very good central defenders, has given me real hope. My brain has just thought whilst writing, that maybe Dyche will consider playing all three, especially with players like Lindstrøm and Ndiaye, who might be more suited to playing slightly inside? Paul Hewitt 20 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:28:12 Peter Beardsley. I know he was a good signing. But if we could have just signed him sooner, and had him for longer. Tony Abrahams 21 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:31:50 And the other fella who also scored in the same game against Liverpool in the only time we have ever come from behind to beat them in my lifetime, if my memory is correct, Paul. Maurice Johnson was another very good player who we got too late, especially because he was already enjoying partying much more than playing football by the time he signed for Everton. Jay Harris 22 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:47:32 Paul Power played well for us but if only we had him at his peak. And of course, let's not forget James Rodriguez. Paul Birmingham 23 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:47:52 For me, there's Mike Pejic and Dave Thomas, good players who always put in a shift for Everton. Gordon Lee could have been great but fate and bloody bad luck and a certain referee put paid to Everton's fate. The wait for success was still a few years away but those were the days! Now on the cusp of a brilliantly designed new stadium and hopefully a robust business to take over the ownership of Everton, the good times will be back very soon. Liam Mogan 24 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:48:56 Another player who played in that derby game, Billy Kenny, was another whose talent was lost to partying. The 90s were still a big time for that for footballers, as anyone who ever frequented the Conti could tell you. Regular blizzards of snow on the top floor VIP area. Danny O’Neill 25 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:50:00 We got Martyn and Beardsley too late, but great players. I also wish we had kept hold of mad Thomas Gravesen longer.I agree, providing we keep Branwaithe and make this new signing, I can see a back three. Ray Said 26 Posted 28/07/2024 at 20:53:16 Andrei Kanchelskis — 1996-97. What a season he gave us. Scorching pace, mazy dribbles, great crosses and dynamite shots. Wish we had him 2 seasons earlier when he was unstoppable for Man Utd. Danny O’Neill 27 Posted 28/07/2024 at 21:04:15 Probably the last top-drawer player we signed, Ray. Joe McMahon 28 Posted 28/07/2024 at 21:04:28 Danny, I felt Peter Beardsley still had fuel in his tank, he was useful for Newcastle. I was also pissed off when we sold Tony Cottee, Gary Speed, Martin Keown and Craig Short. Paul Birmingham 29 Posted 28/07/2024 at 21:18:56 And Wayne Clarke, along with Paul Power. Both were key players in the 1986-87 campaign. Paul Hewitt 30 Posted 28/07/2024 at 21:29:34 Anders Limpar. Another we got to late Colin Glassar 31 Posted 28/07/2024 at 21:48:45 Slaven “sick note” Bilic. Billy Shears 32 Posted 28/07/2024 at 22:01:27 We also should've signed Stubbs from Bolton not Celtic too! After all he was a Blue and a Scouser as well, who was seen in the stands before he signed for Celtic...sigh. Andy Crooks 33 Posted 28/07/2024 at 22:33:30 I might be wrong, Billy, but did we sign Short instead? Richard Duff 34 Posted 28/07/2024 at 22:38:56 Jesper Blomqvist was dynamite before going to Manchester United and would have been a good replacement for Kanchelskis. Yakubu 3 years earlier would also have been helpful. Laurie Hartley 35 Posted 28/07/2024 at 22:54:51 Andy I am still getting over Samuel Eto'o leaving. How to score goals Brian Wilkinson 36 Posted 29/07/2024 at 19:33:40 David Johnson, £31,000 and Rod Belfitt for fuck's sake, dropped a clanger there, as usual got him back too lateTheo WalcottGareth BarrySylvan DistinKevin CampbellMark HughesPaul RideoutAndy GrayPeter Reid Paul PowerNigel Martyn Most of the others already named. Billy Shears 37 Posted 29/07/2024 at 19:56:45 I think so, Andy... if memory serves, from Derby methinks?Great thread this, jeez. we've had some top players at our club, sadly most past their best or riddled with various injuries.Just imagine a front three of Kanchelskis, Campbell and Beardsley now at their very best!!! John Keating 38 Posted 29/07/2024 at 20:15:37 Stubbs, Weir, Kanchelskis, Gascoigne Joe McMahon 39 Posted 29/07/2024 at 20:16:11 And another Brian and Billy, Anders Limpar and Norman Whiteside. I also liked Pat Nevin. Ian Bennett 40 Posted 29/07/2024 at 20:40:17 Steve McMahon Liam Mogan 41 Posted 29/07/2024 at 20:55:34 McmanamanFowlerOwenCarragherAll boyhood blues we missed out on in the 90s. God knows what our youth coaches were doing, as all of them were scouted and recommended to the club. Fowler was given a "take it or leave it" derisory offer as we had 'a big lad up front from Sefton who comes from a good background'. Whilst the Red Shite bent over backwards… Joe McMahon 42 Posted 29/07/2024 at 21:01:01 Liam, I couldn't stand Fowler, but he certainly knew how to score, also many crackers outside the box. Neil Copeland 43 Posted 29/07/2024 at 21:03:38 Nick Barmby Danny O’Neill 44 Posted 29/07/2024 at 21:19:49 Neil, Barmby was my lad's hero as a youngster. You've met him.Probably very childish, but we threw a made-up model with his face onto the fire on Guy Fawkes Night. He was gutted at the time. Liam Mogan 45 Posted 29/07/2024 at 21:25:02 I lived in the street next to Fowler, Joe. He was mates with my brother and played youth football together. How Everton missed out on him I'll never know. He once scored 16 in an U12 game with a scout watching! He was a die-hard blue.He was never a likeable kid though. Arl arse with a big mouth. Neil Copeland 46 Posted 29/07/2024 at 21:40:14 Danny, I doubt you were the only ones to do that. Barmby turned out to be a proper Judas, such a shame as I thought he was very good. Brian Wilkinson 47 Posted 29/07/2024 at 22:41:43 Dele Alli Jon Harding 48 Posted 30/07/2024 at 09:22:49 Olivier Dacourt — one decent season with us early in his career before going on to have a solid career including 2 Serie A titles and 20-odd French caps.He loved a tackle as well — almost as much as he loved a yellow card!
