Trippier to fill that right-back slot?

22/08/2024 103comments  |  Jump to last

A Tweet from David Ornstein claims that Kieran Trippier wants to leave Newcastle Utd, with Everton interested in signing him on loan.

The former England International, now 33 years old, is looking to secure regular first-team football for the upcoming season and could be considered as a good candidate for the right-back slot where Everton are desperate for increased depth in the squad, with Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson both out injured.

Trippier has a personal relationship with the Everton manager, Sean Dyche, which stretches back over a decade to when he replaced Eddie Howe as Burnley's boss in 2012. They worked together for almost 3 years before the full-back joined Tottenham Hotspur, but they have stayed in touch since.

On that relationship, Dyche explained: "We got him as a little butter ball; he wasn't in the shape he needed to be in [but he was a] very talented young man. Just a bit loose, but he had a lovely edge about him. I love it; he's a little lovable rogue, not nothing terrible, not in big trouble or anything, just got an edge, and I really loved it on him.

"I just needed to push him a little bit, cajole him a little, but he listened. So therefore, you build a real rapport; he did fantastic for us, had an amazing time at Burnley before he went to Tottenham, and just always respected it.

"And now and again, he'll ring me for advice read, and we just sort of kept in touch, got to know a couple of his mates and his family a little bit. He got me tickets for the Euros (in 2021) and stuff like that.

"He still FaceTimes me, now and again, rings me, "alright, Gaffer, everything alright?" I'm going, "yeah, cool, what's happening, Trips?"

Being linked with Trippier in loan on Sky.

Only a rumour I know but that would be a prudent signing in my opinion.

Admittedly he is 33 though!

Robert.

He was deemed to be suitable to play at left-back for England, when his true position seems to be right-back.

And at 33 years old, he could be a good acquisition for us when we consider our full-back situation.

Yeh, Trippier would be good as he has a habit of gifting us goals with his glaring errors!

Stupid wages, but can play left and right back when fit.

A good player, but 34 and constantly injured. I guess on loan it's the best we can do

Although the Sam Allardyce and Sammy Lee of ToffeeWeb will love him.

Trippier would be an excellent short-term signing I think. If fit, he would be a big upgrade at right-back and is also comfortable covering at left-back.

Crucially it would also allow us to send Patterson on loan to the Championship which should let us to see if he has what it takes to be a Premier League regular.

Trippier has an excellent relationship with Dyche too. Let's hope Newcastle are not asking for a crazy loan fee.

Do we need yet another ex-Burnley player in our ranks?
Lester Yip

Indeed. He can cross and free kick is good too. Loan makes sense.
Michael Lynch

I'd love this to happen. Even at 33 he'd be better than our current options, and was good enough to play in a European Championships final a few weeks back. Great for set pieces and very positive going forward.

But he only has a year left on his contract, so I'm assuming Newcastle will be looking for a permanent signing with a fairly substantial fee.

Very sensible loan as a stop gap assuming he's fit.

So our next two signings would have a combined age of 69.

With Chelsea's new manager, both Ben Chilwell and Raheem Stirling don't even train with the first team.

As Everton appear to like the more mature players, why not go for either of them, or a least one of them???

Fred Quick

I hope that people realise that Sean will drop Mykolenko and start Trippier in his place, whilst Young returns to right-back! In my head, that started off as a bad joke but I'm not convinced that Dyche wouldn't do such a thing.

Recipe for relegation, a distinct lack of goals, an ageing defence, a club in financial disarray, disinterested owner, disgruntled support, upcoming ground move.

Just as well we have a manager who's used to these battles. Despite my previous protestations, I'll have to get with the program and very reluctantly accept things as they are and not how I'd like them to be.

33 is a bit young for us.
Paul Birmingham

I'd take a good look at the Chelsea lad Trevor Chalobah, who when I've seen him looks a very good player. But the price, wages and moving North could impact.

Tripper was once decent and reliable. Hopefully some transfer wisdom and a nice surprise for Everton. UTFTs!

Denis Richardson

Please make this happen. He may be 33 and injury-prone but is absolutely miles better than anything we have for right-back.

If we signed Trippier and Chillwell on loan, we'd be set for a tophalf finish. Both great at attacking and putting crosses in.

At least just sign Trippier. Hope he doesn't consider us too much of a step down though. One season loan would be perfect.

It's a No from me.

Andrew Clare

We have turned into the Stoke City of the Tony Waddington days. Signing ageing players past their sell-by date. Players like Dobing, Eastham, Elder and even our own Roy Vernon. I suppose at least they signed Alan Hudson who was younger and a class player.

Will we ever get back to the top? I am sick of being in limbo as I am sure most Evertonians are, maybe… maybe not. Let's hope our new owners, whoever they may be, inject new life into the club.

Bill Gall

Colin @22,

Even the best have a nightmare game now and then.

Before the mistakes against Everton, he had been one of the most reliable full-backs in the Premier League.

Jack Convery
25 Posted 22/08/2024 at 14:47:44
Chaloboah is the better bet for me at right-back. He plays centre-back and defensive midfield too. When Tarkowski is over the hill, Chaloboah can take over with O'Brien as his partner, as Branthwaite will have left by then. Flexible players are what we need.

Chilwell is finished in my opinion. The former Leicester left-back has missed a whopping 446 days due to illness and injury over the past three seasons, missing 100 games for club and country.

Trippier is also a No from me. Unless it's a really low loan fee; otherwise swerve.

As per usual, nothing but negativity on here. All some can say is “Oh no, another ex-Burnley player”.

Forget the fact that he played for Spurs and Atletico Madrid and has won over 50 England caps. Can be deadly from free kicks and excellent crosser from corners etc.

But “Oh no, another ex-Burnley player"!

I'm not sure Chalobah is an option. We have no money.

Trippier, if fit, would be an excellent option. Shame it won't be in time for this weekend but I hope it happens. Many Newcastle fans not super happy at this prospect which is a good sign.

I'm not convinced Howe will want to let him go but let's hope player power wins out in this instance.

I suggest everyone watches Sean Dyche's press conference. He might be bluffing, but he said there was no more money, and he said that they wouldn't make knee-jerk decisions based on short-term situations. I doubt we'll be seeing Trippier here, but never say never and all that.

Dyche is also very clear about only playing a new player when he's ready. Particularly saying (and I guess this is a Catch-22 situation) that the worst time to throw in a new, or a young, player is when you have senior players out with injury.

He said Tarkowski was a doubt, so that also suggests that it is even more unlikely that we will see Roman Dixon or any of the new boys except Tim playing. Though I don't think Dixon was ever a serious option.

Mark Wynne
34 Posted 22/08/2024 at 15:44:27
So, according to Dyche, we are down to 14 “recognised players”…

So I'm guessing that doesn't count Keane or Holgate then.

Barry #26,

"He's alive and breathing which are the main criteria these days…".

Sam Bowen
41 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:23:04
A massive Tes from me. He would instantly be our best player.

He had a dip at the back end of last season following injury but was just fine in the Euros. He's been a superb signing for Newcastle in their transition from relegation candidates to where they are now.

I doubt he'd have as big an impact on us but would still be a ridiculously good addition and sort the back line out for a good couple of years.

Do it!!!

Andrew Merrick
42 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:24:44
Trippier wants out of Newcastle, he could do a job at either side, past his best but better than anything we have, and a former Dyche player to boot...

Short contract, loan or a swap for Holgate and Young.

David Bromwell
43 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:31:42
Our news gets worse by the day, but the fullback situation was predictable.

To my mind, we should have offered Coleman a non-playing backroom post, assuming one was available, and said thank you and goodbye to Young. The fact that we kept them both with so few other options was simply bad management.

Worryingly too Messrs Ndiaye and Lindstrøm both look lightweight and maybe not first-team ready. So, if the Trippier story is true, it would be the only bit of good news, and he would be straight in the team on Saturday.

Mihir Ambardekar
44 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:38:43
At this stage, any player would be an upgrade. Trippier on a year's loan would be good signing as he covers left-back and right-back.

I can't see us being linked with quality players. I think the early window optimism has faded; at present, it seems we could at the most sign players on loan or free transfer.

Derek Knox
45 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:40:20
Paul H @ 40,

"What the hell are we doing in training to have all these injuries?"

Well, it's certainly not by "kicking ass" as they say across the pond!

Even at 33 and even if just a loan, Trippier would be better than no right-back coming in at all.

You have a versatile but ageing player, who is great in dead-ball and free-kick situations. I would prefer a younger version but again, while we are in takeover limbo, and with the window running down, what alternatives do we have?

Dale Self
46 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:42:48
James 39, good line! I think to do that, knowing it is the opposite direction from what we need to be doing in transfer business is just too desperate a move for a full-back.

If it was a player that could up the goal count, maybe, but will Trippier get in position to cross enough to make that happen?

It is a gamble that would cause ripples in the wage bill right when we need to resist the temptation.

Stu Darlington
47 Posted 22/08/2024 at 16:44:42
My heart rate's just coming down after the excitement of re-signing Begovic, and here we are talking about signing a proper full-back! This club will be the death of me, or I'll have to get a new battery in my pacemaker.

Everybody knows we definitely need cover at full-back, the only question marks for me are his fitness and his wages. If we could get a couple of good years from him, it would be a good move and take the pressure off for a bit… but, with all players of this age, it is a gamble.

While we are at it, Ben Chilwell at Chelsea is available and he's not a bad left-back when he stays fit; he could be another loan option.

However, with just a week or so left of this window, I don't believe we will get any more incoming… but what do I know?

Ian Bennett
49 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:01:42
Dyche has said we've no money and 14 fit players for the weekend. So, unless Newcastle eat some of Trippier's wages, that ain't happening.

Presumably no bid gets turned down for anyone in the squad, with many out of contract next summer. The morale of all the staff must be on the floor.

What a fucking mess... we need the takeover to happen and soon.

Steve Brown
50 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:11:47
Dale, I agree.

Trippier earns £140k0 a week and is 33 years old, but we are baulking at meeting Calvert-Lewin's wage demand of £130k a week?

If there is a football philosophy being developed at the club, moves like this make it hard to understand. As does renewing the contract of Ashley Young on a weekly salary of £83k and Seamus at £68k.

Paying £291k a week in wages to 3 players with an average age of 35 makes no sense from a football or financial perspective.

Nicholas Ryan
51 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:20:45
Are we better lining up with Trippier at right-back, than Young at right-back...?

Too bloody right we are!!

Robert Tressell
52 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:27:29
Steve #49, you make a good point about the value (or not) from Ashley Young's wages. Obviously looks like a very questionable use of £83k pw.

As a wider point though, if the Tripper deal happens then we won't be paying his full wages. Just the same as Ipswich aren't, I am sure, paying £165k pw to Kalvin Phillips.

The parent club with still pay a healthy share of the wage, with the loaning club responsible for a share.

Billy Shears
53 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:30:29
Not for me... I'd rather have Holgate at right-back!

Chilwell and Stirling on loans would fit the bill, playing a 5-3-2 with Mykolenko as an emergency left-centre-back, but most importantly playing two up front!!

Steve Brown
54 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:41:50
Of course it makes the option more palatable, Robert.

But back to my main point.

If we extend contracts on and make loan signings for players on higher wages who are well into their 30s, what is our football philosophy and how do such decisions help make progress towards it?

Robert Tressell
55 Posted 22/08/2024 at 17:56:41
Absolutely, Steve. Ideally we'd have moved to a more sustainable model already whereby we bring through lower wage, younger players.

We missed a very good opportunity to do that, 2016 to 2021 but short-termism (and vanity and being a bit thick) triumphed instead.

At the moment, we're living hand to mouth and it must be very difficult to implement a strategy. I think both Dyche and Thelwell have their heads screwed on, they're just operating in really crap circumstances.

Hopefully the takeover happens soon.

Jay Harris
56 Posted 22/08/2024 at 18:42:15
We should have got him before he went to Newcastle. He is past his best now and prone to errors, like Young and Gana.

More hopeful for that lad Mbimbe and a hope that James Garner is fit for the weekend.

Not for me. Three right-backs with a combined age of 108.

Where's Hibbo when you need him?

Ian Bennett
59 Posted 22/08/2024 at 18:51:15
Raheem Sterling's wages are £300k a week, that's £15M a season plus £10M a year in amortisation.

I can't see him coming to us, as Chelsea aren't going to subsidise 80-90% of that cost.

Colin Glassar
60 Posted 22/08/2024 at 18:57:19
I'd take Trippier any day of the week over the three stiffs we currently can't count on.
Christy Ring
61 Posted 22/08/2024 at 19:00:08
Trippier can cross a ball, but on massive wages, Chilwell also big wages and always injured.

With Tarkowski doubtful, why not bring in John Egan on a free? He's training with Burnley, very accomplished centre-back. Everyone we've been linked with, Ipswich have signed them.

We got £50M for Onana, Iroegbunam was more or less a swap for Dobbin, Lindstrøm on loan, O'Brien and Ndiaye £35M, so can we not afford a couple more players, who are badly needed?

Denis Richardson
62 Posted 22/08/2024 at 19:15:16
Young and Coleman are not on that type of money. Young is on about £40k pw and Coleman £50k pw.

Still a fair old wedge admittedly. I imagine you could have signed some much younger up-and-coming full-backs for that sort of money. Especially from the Championship or on loan from another Premier League club.

Bordering on incompetence to rely on Young and Coleman as first back-ups for the whole season.

David West
63 Posted 22/08/2024 at 19:29:56
A loan wouldn't be bad. Let's not give him an actual contact though.

He can do a job on both sides and is 100% better than Young.
I'd prefer us to be looking at the massive list of players frozen out of the Chelsea squad (but not Sterling on £350k a week).

Maduweke… Chukwuemeka…

Dale Self
64 Posted 22/08/2024 at 19:33:37
I might have been a bit hasty. If we can get him in with a fair share of his wages picked up by the Skunks, it could be a decent deal to get us through these times.

Knowing that he and Dyche are compatible does make a difference. As long as he does the defensive responsibilities, it could be a solution to using Harrison.

Steve Brown, curious as to where you get those wage figures from? Spotrac (not necessarily reliable) has Young on £40k and Coleman on £55k which seems much more likely. I'd be astounded if we were paying Young £83k per week!

As for Trippier, we'd be lucky to get him. I reckon he'd have better options and is pretty unlikely to come but the fact there are people on here saying "No, thank you" speaks a lot to the collective delusion.

Everton has no great pull right now and even less money!

Bill Gall
70 Posted 22/08/2024 at 20:52:31
Funny thing it is difficult talking about the actual weekly wage the players receive at Chelsea.

Sky Sports had a chart up last week trying to explain the amounts of all clubs' players actual weekly payments were, as it was spread out over the number of years they were signed on for.

What they actually got was made up of appearances, goals scored and other agreed payments.

This must be to get over what Everton were deducted points for. I don't know if it is still available but it showed that Chelsea players were signed on an average weekly wage for 99 years. Everton were shown as over 5 years.

Peter Moore
71 Posted 22/08/2024 at 21:18:19
We can't make other clubs buy the players we are needing to sell to refresh the squad: Calvert-Lewin, Holgate, Doucoure, Keane. Without one or some of these going for money, it seems we are stuck with virtually no wriggle room.

For some to call for Dyche's head is in my honest opinion disgusting. The mess he has had to deal with was not of his own making, yet he just got on with it. In today's world, some managers would have jacked it in, as it can't be easy managing with his hands tied behind his back.

The Premier League is an unforgiving testing ground for unfit or unproven players. Looks like things could well get worse before they get better, but Dyche is not a quitter.

With a fit squad, perhaps after the international break, I suspect he can get the home form back as he did towards end of last season, and pick up points on the road as well.

It's a mess in the back line right now though, isn't it, with Jarrad out and possibly Tarkowski as well this weekend, plus no right-back. Spurs must be licking their lips.

Here's hoping we find a way.

Martin Farrington

Gotta laugh at that team news press conference from Dyche.
We don't need a full-back replacement for just one game.
Erm??? What!

Young is a liability, not good enough and not the answer or future. Coleman is good but only in patches due to age and injury. That leaves Patterson who isn't good enough — Dyche's assessment. And Dixon was out of his depth at Tranmere according to reviews.

Left-back is also an issue. If Mykolenko goes under, who is his cover???

Then he says we purchased players not fit enough nor capable enough of being in the first team to replace first-team players who have left.

With a series of injuries to first-teamers leaving him with 14 first-team squad players fit enough, no new arrivals will be coming in. (Uh oh).

Factor in his assessment of a successful preseason (are you kidding me?) he thinks the team is in a good place. When asked about Saturday, apart from some mistakes vs Brighton, it was a strong performance.

He was asked about throwing in a few of the new signings and categorically dissed that. They aren't up to the Premier League, he repeated. Which begs the question…

I have backed Dyche. Strongly. But what he said today in the press conference left me seething. Oown it, Sean!!! Your team selection and tactics stank. Your fault.

Then, why buy players that are not Premier League quality and need to be "brought up to Premier League standard" when it's clear as day we needed players not auxiliaries.

Worse still, it's Spurs next; his words "reaction" reinforced my biggest dread of who is going to be starting…

I think Dyche should think about what he has to say at these team news conferences.

We are supposed to sign players that should be at least ready on the bench to play if needed; if they are not Premier League standard, why are they in the squad?

We only have had one international player in the squad who plays at left-back in the Premier League and with no recognized left-footed back-up with Premier League qualifications for the last number of seasons. Whose fault is that???

At right-back, we have a reasonable excuse as both recognized right-backs are injured with one near the end of his career and the other not considered to be Premier League standard.

Is he now saying the players we signed from Villa and Italy are not ready for the Premier League ready and need time on the bench? How that will help them is a mystery to me…

They say that this Dyche no-ball training regime was supposed to get them fitter than other teams over the season, it didn't look that much before Young got sent off.

With the situation we are in, they say working with the Director of Football you are supposed to bring in players that are ready to play, not sit and learn what the Premier League is all about before they are considered ready to play in the Premier League.

We have a youth team that are learning about football and honing their skills, so how will they ever get a chance without any Premier League experience, if players we bring in can't even get a chance?

Yes, given our position at right back, take him on loan if we can at least for one season.

Jonjoe Kenny — never got a proper chance.

He's still only 27.

I watched Jonjoe Kenny closely and hoped he would succeed at Everton, but he wasn't going to play ahead of Seamus.

I also watched him play for Schalke. In a match against RB Leipzig, playing wingback, he got absolutely roasted.

It doesn't mean I would be against him coming back, it's just whether he would want to. He seems settled in the Bundesliga.

A 65 million red shite bid for Branthwaite is being reported with 7 million add ons.

PF - although in the cold light of day, there is absolutely no reason why Branthwaite wouldn't jump at the chance to join that lot (or any other successful team), I think if that happens, it will push me off the ledge I'm currently tottering on…

Agree Mark mate - seriously Dyche has me on a tightrope, I hate it, I've never felt this drained and topsy-turvy in 5 decades since my first match.

Bollocks that Jerome. Mark is sound.

I'll wait to hear from Rob Mark with his direct line before believing anything.

But JB to the shite would be demoralising.

Bill @ 76;

I think Thewell is signing apples (footballers?) and Dyche only wants runners, aka, Lemons.

This could point to a (absence of) power vacuum. It's not as if they've been on their holidays and only signed yesterday, they've been here 3, 4? weeks.

I think somebody is playing egos / silly buggers here and they want bringing to heel and / or fucking right off.

Tripper would be an improvement but his age would only add to the 'just play the kids' narrative

I was refering to the signing of Trippier.

I hope that Braithwaite stays. He is badly needed.

Apologies regarding the vagueness of my post, suffering from the same fatigue as Paul.

Loan not a bad option, he can play right- or left-back, would certainly make a good stop-gap until we move to the new stadium and hopefully by then have new owners in.

Worth a punt for me, given the options we have at right-back with injuries, and no cover for Mykolenko at left-back.

To think we let Antonee Robinson go for £2M, doing alright at Fulham.

I was talking with a couple of Geordie contractors in work yesterday. They said leave well alone — not as good as the media make him out; both were season ticket holders as well.

When I pointed out he was our best player in the 3-0 win last season, they both laughed.

On a more serious note, do we need another 30-odd-year old player clogging our squad up? For fuck's sake, Dyche don't you ever learn?

According to Transfermarket, Trippier has played 404 games at RB and only appeared at LB once. This, in Club games. Only in International matches has he played at LB.

He missed 10 games last season with a calf injury. In Newcastle's last 3 leagues 23/24, he played 1 minute, 63 minutes and 9 minutes.

He last played in Premier League 2 for 45 minutes on 19th August against Sunderland. He was on the bench for the EPL home game, versus Southampton, last weekend.

The way that Roman (Ramon?) Dixon played today we may not need to bring in a right-back.

Drunk on optimism, based on our early transfer dealings, I wrote an optimistic article about 6 weeks ago. Since then, we've watched a succession of transfer targets be scooped up by rivals, or by clubs like Aston Villa, who probably won't even play Jaden Philogene (that one still stings).

Sean Dyche, after some teething problems last year, eventually steered a similarly limited squad to what would have been a very stable 12th place finish last season.

Come the end of the international break, we should have some players back, and will hopefully have done some successful player trading. Some of his starting eleven choices have been annoying, and his comments haven't been ideal. But that's the price of doing business with the man. The same man who's performed miracles keeping us up the past 2 years.

The last two matches have been tough watches. Brighton, because of the way that the early performance was so badly squandered, and yesterday because of mistakes and because we were fucking awful.

But we'll improve. Keep the faith, boys and girls.

I see Ipswich now trying to sign Ogbene who had a great season and who Luton signed on a free.

He wouldn't be costly and would give us pace on the right wing? Tom Cannon could be off to Sheffield Utd?

Another RB is being linked to us (in addition to Trippier). Argentinian international Gonzalo Montiel who plays for Sevilla. £9m apparently. Age profile is probably a better fit long term than Trippier. I guess we'll know in the next few days if there's any truth to it...

Chelsea have signed yet another goalkeeper. Someone called Mike Penders from Genk for £17M, and give him a contract until 2032.

What is it with goalkeepers with that club?

Haha, if it is wrong, I blame the editors.

Although £40,000 a week appalls me just as much for a 39-year-old.

As for £140,000 for a 33-year-old ex-Burnley and Newcastle player who played badly last season and wants to move because he got caught cheating on his wife? I can't imagine any sensible club would make such a move.
