Goodison's final game moved to Monday?

| 07/04/2025 100comments  |  Jump to last

I'm hearing plenty of rumours about when the final home game to ever be played at Goodison Park, against Southampton, will be played. At the moment, it's scheduled for Sunday 18 May (the FA Cup Final is 17 May). However, I'm hearing it will be Monday 19 May, 6 weeks today.

There are, as yet, no announcements on televised games for that weekend, and I believe Sky and TNT have to announce their games at a minimum 6 weeks in advance.

Under normal circumstances, I doubt very much our game would be chosen for TV, but this is not normal. So will our game be put back 24 hours for our final game at Goodison, and all the aftermath celebrations — bearing in mind West Ham's final game at Upton Park was shown live?

Rob. I've also heard it could be changed to the Monday evening which, in my book, would be a disgrace!

I've heard the rumours it's being moved to Monday — fucking disgrace if it is and Everton should complain and block it. 😡

Monday eh?

Ah well, I'll fuck off on holiday on Sunday now then and make a few quid on my ticket.

Jon,

I was talking at the weekend about the Todd Boehly resale site. At the moment, they have 12 tickets for the Southampton game for between £1,200 and £2,000!

EFC should ban whoever had these tickets originally. It's one thing making a few quid but those prices are shocking.

That would be a total disgrace – the decision-makers have absolutely no regard for fans. As the Leeds chant goes, 'Sky TV is effing shit'.

Jon 3, you're as bad! 👎

If what I heard is true and the club specifically asked for our final home game not to be on the last Sunday of the season, when everyone kicks off at the same time, then I think the club have messed up.

It should have been a guaranteed Sunday when everyone has time after the game to digest the significance of that final whistle in a top flight game at Goodison Park.

Now it could be people getting off handy to get home as they're up at stupid o'clock next morning for work or the kids need to be up for school…

Did the club liaise with FAB or any other fan group before asking the Premier League to make sure we didn't play at home for the last game?

Apparently they thought Sky wouldn't be interested in the goings on at Goodison Park because of more important games going on at the same time (that's not happening anyway); name an Evertonian bothered about Sky's coverage on our last game at Goodison Park.

Brian Williams
7 Posted 07/04/2025 at 13:45:14
Jeff, it is true.

The club specifically asked for the last game at Goodison to be the second to last week of the season.

The reasoning behind that was not wanting the occasion to be lost among possible last game drama with regard to the premier league winners and also relegation.

The club weren't to know that both of those issues will/should be well decided by then. Hindsight's a wonderful thing isn't it?

IMHO it was a decision made with the best intentions and makes sense to me.

With regard to your "name an Evertonian bothered about Sky's coverage of our last game at Goodison?"

Just about every Evertonian who can't get into the game or at least near the stadium.

You're talking about thousands upon thousands of Evertonians.

I'm surprised you even had to question that.

Jeff, Brian,

Yes, the club asked for our last game at Goodison not to be at the same kick-off time as everyone else on the Sunday. Probably because, at the time the first rumours came out, our position was looking precarious.

I don't think they specifically asked for Monday but, once they asked for a change, we are at the hands of the TV sponsors and the Premier League.

There are a few ways of looking at this:

1. A final game under the lights would be fantastic and memorable.

2. Disruption to supporters travelling from distance. That's hotels, relying on family members or coach journey's back into the early hours on a work day.

3. My personal preference. I know that TV dictates, but for the last game of the season, forget Sunday, why can't every game kick off at 3 pm on a Saturday.

I'm probably being biased on point 3 as trains of late on a Sunday are subject to a lot of disruption.

Brian, totally. Everyone will want to be there and thousands will travel just to be in the pubs around Goodison watching it. I hope the club keep the Fan Zone open throughout and have screens. Maybe put something up in Stanley Park?

Brian Williams
10 Posted 07/04/2025 at 15:55:30
Danny. The club only asked that the last game at Goodison would be the second-to-last game of the season, rather than the last.

They didn't ask for it to be at a different time from the other games on the same day, mate.

Sorry to be pedantic.

Brian Wilkinson
11 Posted 07/04/2025 at 16:00:17
Absolute joke if they switch it to a Monday night, who will want to leave Goodison after the final whistle, players lap of honour, possibly a lap of honour from players of the past eras, soaking in Goodison one last time after the final whistle? It has to be on the Sunday, to allow time for fans to say their final farewell,

Let us hope it is just a rumour; common sense says Sunday afternoon.

Brian Wilkinson
12 Posted 07/04/2025 at 16:04:17
Danny, I am pretty sure they will put something on in the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, either in the Fanzone, or on the big screens inside the stadium.

I will be gobsmacked if they miss that opportunity, a chance for both stadiums to host the game for fans… watch this space.

Brian Wilkinson

At the very worst, we know 25,000 can sit in the new stadium.

You would think so, Brian W.

Other Brian, nothing pedantic. Then I am not sure why Monday night is being rumoured, because the reasoning you suggest has been met.

I just hope whoever is calling the shots, tells Everton soon, so they can tell the supporters. Many will already have made travel arrangements they may have to change.

Rob,

Whatever happened to the FA Cup Final being the finale to the English season? I don't think this is the first time in recent years, but I've probably not taken much notice since 2009.

Regarding TV, they have the ability to show every match live on a selection process, so there is no reason they all can't be available.

Ray Robinson
17 Posted 07/04/2025 at 16:58:09
Well, if it did get moved to Monday night, it might deter many Southampton fans from gate-crashing the party. But it'd be criminal if any seats were left empty in the away end, so don't offer them the Upper Bullens allocation.

I'm sure many Saints fans have worked out that they could make a killing flogging their tickets on the secondary ticketing market.

Rob Halligan
18 Posted 07/04/2025 at 17:10:11
Ray,

I doubt very much Southampton would take the upper Bullens section, even it is a Sunday game. They will only take the lower section and the paddock section.

Ray Robinson
19 Posted 07/04/2025 at 17:28:10
I agree, Rob. However, could we stop them taking the Upper Bullens if their fans realise that they could make a fortune on the resale market?

And what happens if they don't fill the Lower Bullens? Empty seats at the last match? Doesn't bear thinking about.

Rob Halligan
20 Posted 07/04/2025 at 17:41:47
Ray, tickets sold at an inflated price are easily traceable to the original buyer. When we buy away tickets, the club know exactly which seat has been allocated to us.

It was like when we played Leicester away, the year they won the league, and they were being presented with the trophy following that game. There were quite a few Leicester fans in the away section that day, and although there was no trouble, I don't know if any Leicester fans complained about the price they paid for tickets?

Should Southampton opt to take the Upper Bullens, and a few hundred are sold online at inflated prices, Southampton should be able to identify who the ticket was allocated too, and take the appropriate action.

There's nothing Everton can do about any unsold seats in the lower Bullens and Paddock sections. I think there is access between the two which cannot be cordoned off. The other alternative is to give Southampton tickets in the Upper Bullens, at a reduced allocation, and somehow segregate them from the Everton fans. The Lower Bullens and Paddock are then given to Everton fans.

Danny O'Neill
21 Posted 07/04/2025 at 18:00:32
I wouldn't underestimate how many away supporters actually want to attend Goodison for the last occasion. It may have its posts and lower visibility view in the lower sections of the Bullens Road and Gwladys Street stands, but it's got a charm that a lot of visiting fans want to experience one last time.

Not just Southampton, I've heard that from supporters of many clubs.

Danny, not sure that I'd have wanted to travel to the Dell on a Monday night when my side had already been relegated but maybe you're right.

I know of one Saints supporter who intends to travel up – at least he intended to for the Sunday kick-off.

Anyone else ordered it from the Red Echo?

Danny O'Neill
24 Posted 07/04/2025 at 19:35:39
Colin, I used to collect programmes and memorabilia like what you mention when I was in my teens. Not just Everton ones and even matches I had never been to for collection purposes.

There was a great little shop on the corner of Walton Breck Road near the Kop. When my step-Grandmother used to go to the butchers across the road, I would always go in and got to know the owner well. He had a great collection and if you'd missed one, he usually had a copy.

I did have every home game from the 86-87 title-winning season, all bought at Goodison, which I used to cherish and look after. God knows where they are now. Lost over the years.

I started boycotting the Echo years ago. I have no time for it and their website is awful.

Danny 21: I think that I mentioned this somewhere else, there was a Saints fan on yesterday's 606 who was saying how much he loved Goodison Park and couldn't wait to be there for the last game which he said would be very special.

I'm feeling that another 8-0 is on the cards.

I wouldn't pay £1,200 for a car — never mind a ticket for a football match.

The move to Bramley-Moore Dock, as exciting as it is for some fans, also means the end of going the game for others. Me arl fella is giving his season ticket up which he has had for 50+ years and he's only missed a handful of games since he started going in about 1962.

The logistics and trouble to get to the ground has put an end to that; he's making out that he's not too bothered as he doesn't really enjoy modern-day football… but I know how much he loves Everton and it will leave a massive hole in his heart.

Here's a thought. Why send any tickets to Southampton at all? It's our ground & club after all and an extra special occasion. An additional 3k seat to Evertonians.

What's the worse that the powers that be could do to us? Dock us points?

Oh, hang on…

"... I am pretty sure they will put something on in the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, either in the Fanzone, or on the big screens inside the stadium."

that's not really the point though Brian, is it?

Its BEING at Goodison for the last ever game. The match itself is, at least to me, irrelevant.

IF (as is extremely likely) I cant get a ticket for the game at Goodison I will be standing outside the ground at least at the kick off and the end.

I may nip in the Wilmslow to catch some of the game but its being at Goodison that is pulling the heartstrings.

Alan @29,

Every club has to offer 3,000 tickets to visiting clubs if their capacity is over 30,000. Less on a percentage basis for those with smaller capacity stadiums.

It's up to the away club to return tickets if they don't sell them, or don't feel they will sell them. We couldn't just not give Southampton tickets. As sometimes happens, the Upper Bullens section allocated to away supporters becomes available to Everton fans.

There are also loose rules that stipulate the home club must position the away section in a location that has pitch-side seats. Only two clubs get away with not doing this: Newcastle and their 197 steps into the clouds, and Manchester United. Newcastle apparently have a permanent exception from the Premier League. Manchester United had an exemption, but no-one seems to have questioned it.

Mark, I suggested the idea of the match being screened at the new stadium, but you're right, this will be about being in, near or around Goodison on the occasion.

Unbelievable reasoning to put OUR last league fixture at Anfield. Ok. it holds more specs, but it's all about Goodison Park. OUR ground for 132 years. OUR history in the iconic Old Lady. Can't believe this is happening. Surely we could have made use of Bramley Moore, and at the same time put more money into the Blue pockets.

In a normal season, there are usually still 'things' to be decided...but this year( barring a miracle or 2) everything is more or less sorted. So every chance our game will/should be selected for live broadcast. Or will they want one more chance to 'suck up' to the RS?

With one month to go this fixture is still getting shown as a 3pm kick-off on Sunday 18th May. How short a notice do the television companies need to change a fixture?
Barry McNally
38 Posted 17/04/2025 at 10:15:01

Rob Halligan
40 Posted 17/04/2025 at 10:41:10
Tony and Barry……I think all tv fixtures have to be announced about six weeks before the original scheduled date. I received a WhatsApp message from a mate showing when tv games must be “announced by date” for the entire season, and games scheduled for match week 37 shows all tv games must be announced before April 4th, nearly two weeks ago. This was a schedule released by the premier league back in July though, so maybe it’s changed? The league is won, relegation places as good as sorted, with only CL places to be sorted, so I can’t see what the hold up is? Apart from anything else, it’s unfair on fans who have to travel as their travel plans could be disrupted. We’ve already got train tickets for Chelsea, Fulham and Newcastle, but only after it was confirmed the date and kick off times for those games, although Newcastle was always going to be a Sunday 4pm kick off.

Thanks Rob.

The Europa League final is on Wednesday 21 May so they must be waiting to see if ManUre or Spuds progress tonight to the semis , and if they do, not to schedule those teams in for MNF on the 19th in case they make the final.

Let's just pray our game is on the Sunday at a reasonable hour and televised.

I’m not a season ticket holder any more, and I’m not prepared to pay £800+ for a ticket for the match, but I’ll be there for the last game, just to soak up the atmosphere.

A couple of pints at the usual matchday haunts; half chips, half rice and curry sauce from Lucky’s Blue Dragon, and then hang around the stadium just to hear our fans roar at Goodison one last time.

As a kid, if I don’t go to the match then I used sit in the back yard at my grandma’s house on Stuart Rd in Walton and listen for those electrifying roars, trying to guess the final score.

Fantastic memories of a very special place.

Finally some logic from above! I find it so irritating that the EPL have most derby matches at midday and then poor Southampton or Newcastle fans, say, have to travel hundreds of miles once their game finishes in late evening, especially on a bloody Monday or Friday. Money and bias towards the "so-called" rules with that feckin EPL lot...clubs should boycott the buggers until they sort it out! It's good that it isn't a Monday night Gerry, although I loved Goodison under the lights. They've been some of my best memories. I can't believe I'm now saying that in the past tense.

The early kick offs are tricky. Okay, I'm lucky and have family I can stay with in Liverpool or stay in a hotel, work dependent. But for many who travel hundreds of miles, they may get home earlier, but it will be a ridiculously early start.

Just kicking off at 4pm would have been the right balance.

Waiting on the club’s announcement as I’m sure there’ll be a programme of events for those outside GP.

I have a, cough, ‘sound’ business idea.

Fans with tickets leave the ground at half time to visit the free bars and screens of any pub within 1/2 mile of County Road. 40,000 fans without tickets leave those same pubs and pay cash for the second half (all proceeds to the participating pubs as a final hurrah).

Full time, the drinking fans return to GP directed on to the pitch for a final send off.
GP attendance record v R/S broken, no fan misses out and drinks all round. What could go wrong?

If this was the other way round our fan base would be rightly outraged.

Once again TV showing they have absolutely no respect for the fans who go to the games.

As always fans are the last to be considered over kick off times, and again this time. I am lucky living in Liverpool it will take me longer to walk to the ground from our car park than it will to drive to it.

Like Dave I will remember my 2 mates who have passed away, we had season tickets together and went to all the Cup Finals together. I had to move from my original seat I had next to them for 30 years as it was to painful so I am still in Upper Bullens but at the other end by the away fans. I guess there will be many of our great players invited to share the moment. I guess with a 12.00 kick off the ex players coming on the pitch will take place at the end or at half time.

I know some wont agree but I think we should let bygones be bygones and invite Sharp to these celebrations, he may refuse. But I would hope he wouldn't refuse.

Wonder if TFG namely Dan friedkin will be at Goodison for the last game. You would think he'd want to get to Goodison for at least one game before it shuts

Yes, I agree Sharp should be back in the fold - I've heard all the arguments for and against - but we have class - Let's show it, and let's remember the good times he gave us.

Graham Sharp the player will always live in my mind.

There are two that stick in the memories. Scoring the opening goal right in front of me in the 1984 cup final at Wembley and getting the right side of Lawrenson to smash that one in at the Anfield Road end to spark a pitch invasion. Everton were back.

There are probably more.

Sharp isn't, and never has been, told to keep away from Goodison by the supporters.
It was his, and his alone, decision to stay away after resigning saying "It wouldn't/ doesn't feel the same.
Ball's in his court!

I'm glad I'm 14,000 miles away, I won't have to remember where I stood, I won't have to feel the exhilaration of running down Goodison road, the laughter, the jokes, the thrill of seeing the velvet green under the floodlights, the pride of belonging to something so wonderful it takes your breath away. I won't have to remember Alex Young, Alan Ball and so many others, I won't have to remember the incompetent and greedy who nearly destroyed my dream, a love of my life. I won't have to remember running down the valley back to Portland Gardens, I won't have to look up at my Uncle Tommy's seat and see another face staring back, or the spot I stood admist Gwladys street so many years ago on a special day, I won't ever see the fog roll in through the floodlights, wonder who scored. I will never feel these days, these moments again. I'm glad I am so far away on that day because my heart will crack, the tears will flow and I will know how the world ends, But in my heart those days will continue, I don't need to know she.s gone because she will always remain in my heart and the hearts of millions. The Pride of Merseyside.

I agree with Danny #77 Elton john would be brilliant way to end Goodison. It was when we beat his team at wembley we went on to great thing. He re leased that new single Guess that why they call it the blues came out on cup final day

Danny 77,

Sharpe has never paid to get into a game in his life. If he stays away so be it.

We are Evertonians, anyone who doesn't pay their way needs fucking right off, including every hanging on player we have ever had...including sheedy.

That's a bit harsh Rob @82. I think as a club, whether it be differing views on the current manager, or the almost universal view of the previous leadership, we are in a healing process after decades of neglect.

Christine, memories never go away. We live with them every day. They are imprinted in our brains and ingrained in our hearts.

Don't give a toss if Sharp is there or not. It's up to him. Brian W is spot on. If Sharp wants to sulk round at Owey's for the match then that's up to him.

Dear God! Elton John at the Old Lady's last match singing the goddam awful dirge "I guess that's ... " with its deep meaningful footy- and Everton-related-lyrics disguised as sentimental twaddle:

"Laughin' like children, livin' like lovers / Rollin' like thunder under the covers / And I guess that's why they call it the blues"

Dear God. It gets worse.

"Picture my face in your hands / Live for each second without hesitation / And never forget I'm your man"

Rabble-rousing stuff. It continues:

"Wait on me, girl / Cry in the night if it helps / But more than ever, I simply love you / More than I love life itself"

Saccharine tripe but so much better for us at Everton than the timid mousey Thousands are Sailing, Waterfront, Into the Valley, In a Big Country etc.

"Rollin' like thunder under the covers".

But, as I have said before - apologies - how on earth could that Watford dirge ever ever for even a single second be considered ahead of a song that came out the year before: the magnificent anthemic "Story of the Blues".

They nick ZCars; we nick "And never forget I'm your man".

Given his stance and behaviour in recent years Sharp to me is as welcome as a turd in our Goodison swimming pool, forever.

He took everything from us pay-wise in the certain knowledge that our club was being ruined by those paying him.

Just lately I've come across, innocuously, FB reels of that other shyster Scottish striker who stole a living from us for years and years, namely Ferguson, chuntering on with Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright and boasting of his horrible "exploits" whilst at the same time NOW acknowledging what a c**t he was in terms of producing on the pitch, albeit he still laughs about it.

Indulging the likes of such people has for decades reduced us to the mediocrity of where we've been throughout that time, so let's hear no more at all in praise of such 100% feckless pricks - please.

If we fans can for once imbue a winning desire on our current alleged owners I'll start having faith again in football being a sport to enjoy.

Oh no! Please Sheedy no!

When we beat Aston Villa in next years FA Cup final it begins as the final whistle fades away, scarfs held high: 'And it won't be long before you and me run / To the place in our hearts where we hide'. Stop it; stop it. 'Rollin' like thunder under the covers'. Please stop. But it gets louder. 'Just stare into space / Picture my face in your hands'.

Us: 'And never forget I'm your man'.

Hibs: Sunshine on Leith.

Elton Welsby asked Ray Clemence "did you nearly save it ?". The brilliant Clemence responded with admirable honesty - " I nearly saw it"

They were of course talking about A Graeme Sharp waste high volley from just inside the angle of the box which screamed over Clemence's shoulder and into far corner. one of the greatest strikes ever seen at this Iconic stadium.

Sharp proved repeatedly that he was one of the games most outstanding exponents of the volley, but there was so many other aspects to his game. Every player who ever played alongside him had the best spells of their careers. No Everton player has won more medals. His goals against QPR and Bayern will be remembered for very nearly bringing the Goodison House down. His contribution to our success and trophy winning surpasses that of greats like Ball, Kendal, Harvey, Dean, Lawton, Young...and just about everyone else really

Sharps decison to take the Kenwright shilling is well documented, but hundreds of others who took that same shilling will be welcome at Goodison on the last day. it's hypocritical bollocks. We all have to make the best living we know how and if every body who has worked for an arsehole was told to stay away, the place would be empty.

Brian 78

Whilst I normally agree with much of what you say. I cant agree with post 78. Take a look at Laughing Larry post 88 for instance.

Life will always throw up bitter, vindictive, motherfuckers. People who will overlook every bit of goodness in others in order to focus on a few mistakes they may have made.

So Sharp fucked up and chose the wrong side after he finished playing. Few people would be able to walk away from the security it offered to his family...but even fewer have made the old lady shake to its foundations as he has done. He is and remains a Goodison legend.

For me. Any party celebrating the history of Goodison without Graeme Sharp would be like a wedding your best mate didnt come to because he was made to feel unwelcome by a bitter minority who you didnt want to be there in the first place.

Colin (91), If you find out that Sharp hasn’t been invited, which I doubt, then you’d feel better not going yourself. If he had turned up at Goodison those last few weeks of the season when he was “ frightened “he would have been in no danger, he was at the Grand National walking around without the slightest bit of trouble.

I appreciate Sharp the player, not as much as yourself going by your write up, not the man but if he comes to the last match he will be made very welcome, I’m sure fans will be remembering happy, positive times rather than any negativity on this sad but very special day.

Finally some people stick to their principles no matter what the circumstances are, some forget their principles and take the money.

Is right Dave.

Remember the player. I agree with you, as good as he was and an important part of that all conquering team, he's down the pecking order.

When I met my wife, she found it odd the other 3 I shared a barrack room with had page 3 models plastered all over their "pit" walls.

I had pictures of Sheedy and Sharp and had to explain who they were.

So began her introduction to Everton and rivalry with the other woman in my life.

Dave

the guy who tells Graeme Sharp that he isn't invited doesnt work at this club. Nor does he support them. Nobody would have the right... or the bottle.

My post was aimed at the usual non contributing snipers who say he wouldnt be welcome. Who the fuck do these people think they are ?

I accept that some (like you) would not rate Sharp the player as Highly as I do, so I kept the things I wrote about him as factual as I could rather than offer mere opinion.

I agree with you. I don't think Sharp was in any sort danger going to Goodison or anywhere else in the City. Not physical danger anyway. In fact I've personally seen him twice since he left. However ! I have no doubt he would have been subject to vindictive vile abuse from people hiding in the crowd who wouldnt dare say it to his face. I suspect/believe THAT is what he feared. Confrontation...Hassle

As a fan base we were enraged by the fuck-witted allegations of death threats and Headlocks. It was one mans attempt to take the moral high ground and blacken the character of the fans who had grown to hate him. I think Sharp as been tarred with the same brush... Guilty by association.

I have lost track of the number of fans and "legends" who have fought Kenwrights corner and have been glowing in their praise for him... are none of those welcome either ?

Principles ? I used to think people who crossed picket lines were people without principles. Even got myself into trouble with the law when I was younger. Now I'm older and wiser and I realise they simply had different principles to me. They saw things one way I saw them another.

Maybe Sharps principles told him to he should be loyal his colleagues and the fella who gave him a job when nobody else would.

Like him or not...Nothing can ever extinguish his magnificent achievements with this club.

Some strict selling arrangements being implemented by Southampton for this final game at Goodison

Saints take on Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday 18th May 2025 – 12:00pm Kick-off, live on TNT Sports. We have received the maximum allocation of 2,976 tickets.

With the high profile surrounding this game, we will be forcing the final 500 tickets sold, as well as a random 500 tickets, to be collected from Goodison Park with photographic ID. Supporters selected for collection, will receive details around the process via email, by Friday 2nd May. As a reminder, away tickets should not be passed or sold on and should be used only by the named assigned to the ticket at the time of purchase. The club reserves the right to withhold any tickets that are being collected by someone not matching these details.

Colin (101) Fair enough I agree with a lot of what you but not others—— A scab is exactly what it implies and when it came to striking over pay rises I doubt if any scabs refused the rise albeit there might have been extreme cases where a man crossing picket lines had a good reason to.

I wrote a lot more about Sharp and his connection to Kenwright but erased it and think it is better to let sleeping dogs lie.
