Robert Tressell 2 Posted 01/07/2025 at 16:29:40 Most of these are poor, over the hill, injured or really old which is why their being released by their present clubs. None of them would really add anything other than a body who could occasionally play to cover injuries (assuming they aren't injured themselves). That said, Coufal, Reguillon and Walker-Peters wouldn't be bad signings as cover. I have lost track of what Zouma is like these days. Maybe others could comment - but presumably he's well off the form we saw when he was briefly with us some years ago. Eric Myles 3 Posted 01/07/2025 at 16:34:32 Would John Ruddy be decent back-up keeper? He has history with us but hasn't really done anything noteworthy since leaving. Peter Mills 4 Posted 01/07/2025 at 16:39:26 Eric#3, Im sure he would be delighted to double his career tally with us, 20 years after his only game! Paul Kossoff 5 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:05:13 Tell you who was good back up keepers for Jordan, Asmir Begović and João virginia. I could see letting one go, but two is pure stupidity. Have we only J P with first team experience now? Apparently Chermiti isn't going out on loan. It's a wonder with Angus Kinnear in charge. "Oh we have J P in goal, why do we need another keeper? Oh Beto is flying, why do we need another striker? I'll ring Stoke up myself". And before you say, Virginia didn't want to be number two, Kepa has just gone to Arsenal, and I think he's a bit better than Virginia. John Chambers 6 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:31:16 Paul the problem we have got trying to attract a back up keeper is lack go any potential game time. Taking Kepa as the example he has probably been told he will be their keeper for the League & FA cup games. With the new format Champions league there are probably a couple of games there he will get a game as well so he can probably expect about 10 appearances. Given our record in the cups and no Europe he'd be lucky to get 3 games!Virginia wanted to leave as if he doesn't get to be No1 somewhere now he never will so I don't see we could have kept him. I don't know what it would have taken to keep Begovic but he hasn't really played at the top level for sometime so perhaps the club wanted someone with a bit more recent "form", that's why I wouldn't be surprised to see Fabianski turn up for a year. Paul Kossoff 7 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:45:07 John 6. Fabianski? 40 yrs old. Why don't we get Ben Foster in as well, he's only 42. We could put him in cold storage and when Fabianski retires bring out Foster who would still only be 42. You should take over from Kinnear I think you would do a better job.😁 Ed Prytherch 8 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:50:30 Ben Mee is better than Michaei Keane, in fact we bought the wrong one from Burnley. Kevin Molloy 9 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:53:53 thank heavens Kinnear has brought in a committee to help with signings, the last thing we need is for Moyes to go around cutting deals for players Angus has never heard of. Danny O'Neill 10 Posted 01/07/2025 at 17:57:45 I think with all the talk of right flank, strikers, Gana and Keane, we're missing the goalkeeper situation. Surely the club hasn't overlooked that??I'm not particularly averse about an older keeper. Nigel Martyn came to us as backup at 37 and played until he was 40. Until Pickford came along, probably the best keeper we'd had since Southall.I still think he chose us over going to Chelsea because he saw Richard Wright was our number one and thought he'd get his chance!!The alternative would be a young inexperienced keeper, because it would be more difficult to attract one in their prime to be backup. Robert Tressell 11 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:14:16 Danny # 10, the GK situation is very straightforward. Come the start of the season we will have (at least) low cost / free cover to replace Begovic and Virginia. There are loads of options, far too many to bother listing out. We also have Tyrer who is probably no better or worse than Virginia (and has certainly played more competitive football recently) Mike Gaynes 12 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:20:02 A keeper's age doesn't matter. Watched Keylor Navas the other night against the USA. Still a legend at 37. Sven Ulreich from Bayern just went off contract. He'd be first on my list with nobody else a close second. Saw him in a game last year. Outstanding.Mat Ryan the Aussie another possibility. But I'm not worried. We'll find somebody. Liam Mogan 13 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:37:09 'A keeper's age doesn't matter'What if he's 78, MG? 🤣 Brent Stephens 14 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:40:49 OK, so he's a year too old at 78, Liam. You've got to have a cut-off point somewhere, I guess. Liam Mogan 15 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:43:57 If they are old enough, they are good enough, Brent! Brent Stephens 16 Posted 01/07/2025 at 18:49:57 That makes me very good, Liam! David Bromwell 17 Posted 01/07/2025 at 19:09:08 I think if Michael Keane gets another offer he will be off as I cannot think he would want to stay where he is always likely to be the fall guy when and if things go wrong. But these are nervous times as we need so many players, and it's hard to imagine how they will all be settled in for the start of the new season. Andy Crooks 18 Posted 01/07/2025 at 20:28:25 I know time flies as you get older but I would have imagined John Ruddy must be in his early eighties.Ben Mee would be a good choice if he his over his marriage breakdown. I understand he was briefly hitched to the lovely actress Mimi Rogers but felt she was a bit self centred.I'll get my coat!
