Rumour Mill — Week of 3 August 2025

| 03/08/2025 27comments  |  Jump to last

With Everton securing the wooden spoon in the Premier League Summer Series with an impossibly thin squad, there are strong suggestions that more players will be signed this week.

  • Adam Aznou, left-back from Bayern Munich (4-year deal)
  • Mark Travers, goalkeeper from Bournemouth (4-year deal)
  • Thierno Barry, striker from Villarreal (4-year deal)

Confirmation that Everton has re-signed five of last season's senior players:

  • Michael Keane has signed a new 1-year contract
  • Jarrard Branthwaite has signed a new 5-year contract
  • Seamus Coleman has accepted a new 1-year playing contract
  • Carlos Alcaraz, on a permanent 2-year deal

And for the next one on the clickbait conveyor belt I give you...

(drum roll please).

Akturkoglu of Benfica. Apparently we're looking at a £39M bid.
18 goals & 16 assists across all competitions last season.

England-born winger Ademola Lookman says Atalanta have reneged on that promise after "receiving an offer for a move to AC Milan in alignment to what I believe had been discussed".

"I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right and I feel that enough is enough," Lookman wrote on social media.
"I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request."

Lookman said Atalanta were "blocking the opportunity" of him leaving the club "for reasons I do not understand".

1. So he is not coming back
2. He hasn't changed since he left

Phil, he "hasn't changed since he left"??

In three seasons in Serie A he has 39 goals and 21 assists.

I call that one hell of a change.

But his attitude has not changed, only his experience (and hair style).

I dunno, Phil, I think 77 goal involvements in all competitions is pretty good evidence that he's no longer the immature underperformer he was with us. And I think he's entitled to want to leave a club that allowed the manager to publicly insult him, then lied to him about a transfer.

I'm all for the guy. Hope his Inter deal goes through.

Atalanta should give Lookman the move he wants, if for no other reason than him single handedly winning them the Europa League in 2024, when he scored a stunning hat trick to defeat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0.

MK, thanks for including Weah, but I'm afraid I'm keeping that rumour alive all by myself.

Although his move to Marseille seems to have fallen through... hmmmm.

MK, Aznou features on both the 'signed' list and 'linked with' list?, Omari Hutchinson appears twice, some names on the linked with list have already signed with other clubs - Evan Ferguson, for example?

But, this is all great fun, until you realise that with less than 2 weeks left for the start of the season, we have actually signed only 3 players - none of whom are unlikely to make the 1st XI - and let go of 12 players - out of which, arguably 4/5 players featured regularly last season;- Calvert-Lewin, Ashley Young, Jack Harrison, Orel Mangala (before his injury) and Doucoure.

At a stretch, you could argue that Harrison Armstrong seems to have made a strong case to start or feature regularly this season, which means that we still need to sign 4 quality players at least.

To restate the bleeding obvious -

Right back - Maitland-Niles, Rensch, Vagiannidis, Juanlu
Right Winger - Dibling, Kubo, Hutchinson, Doak, Fofana
2 x Midfield - Gallagher, Grealish, McGinn, Luiz, Mangala, Onyedika

If we get these deals done, we will have a squad capable of challenging in the Top 10.

Obviously we need players who can step up instantly into the squad.
However, we still must look to the future and buy potential for small money.
I’ve mentioned him before but Lennon Miller at Motherwell is one worth watching.
With the right coaching this lad could be a great buy

Let’s go full circle and sign Calvert Lewin and Doucoure.

Mal #11] Many of us would not be surprised to see that happen.

John # 10, Miller could be an excellent signing. It doesn’t take long before low cost high quality young players are high quality first teamers.

Robert, there are many young prospects we can get for nowt. There are very few who have proven themselves in first teams in various leagues.

Miller has been excellent at Motherwell last season. I still cannot understand why clubs haven't “taken a chance” a la John McGinn. Miller is a great prospect.

All five players brought in so far have been purchases. No loans in as of yet.

Do you think any loans will come in and will they arrive before Transfer Deadline Day?

Phil @ 4, I assume you know Ademola personally then?

Steve Brown

Now to someone who definitely is a knobhead.

Marseille are considering terminating the contract of Neil Maupay as they can't find anyone to buy him.

Steve, he came round for tea at the weekend.

Lookman turned out to be a good player. A few question marks over his attitude in his formative years, but that's common in young players. Read the same for Anthony Gordon.

I don't think there were doubts over his ability.

Everton were too early for him. Wrong time, wrong club in the situation we were in for a player wanting to establish himself.

Steve Brown

Hope he doesn't read your post then, Phil. He's be upset.

Lookman's only attitude problem was refusing to do what Allardyce wanted when he chose a loan to RB Leipzig over Derby County.

Smart lad.

Forest bidding for Dilane Bakwa. Him and Evan Guessand (just signed for Villa) were the two players I wanted for us!

No right-back links either at the moment, so perhaps Moyes is happy with O'Brien there?

Sounds like TFG are to offer new shares to new investors. This is surely a positive move, right?

Wilfred Ndidi has left Leicester City, with the midfielder joining Turkish side Besiktas for £9M after the club triggered his release clause.

Michael,

But none of the so-called Big 6 made a move for him, in fact I didn't see any Premier League clubs linked strongly with him.

Well, we have a new name at the top of the rumor list. Fichajes in Spain reports we're about to sign Dion Lopy, 23, defensive mid from Almeria in the Spanish second division. Senegal international for just a few minutes so far, and reportedly the best prospect on a club that missed out on promotion and now must balance its books. From Yahoo Sports:

Talks between the club and the player are said to be in the final stages, and a deal worth around €25 million is on the verge of being agreed. According to the report, Lopy has begun preparations to leave Almeria and, unless something goes wrong, he could be on his way to Merseyside within days.

Lopy is physically strong, quick in the tackle and has strong positional awareness. He is a master of keeping possession of the ball and is very disciplined in providing coverage to the defence... His athleticism, involvement in high pressing and quick recovery match Everton’s current needs. Idrissa Gueye could be used as a mentor, and Lopy could slowly be built up as a regular player. €25 million might seem like a high price tag, especially at a time when the club’s finances are not normal, but the investment does not seem risky.

Interesting statistical profile. In 73 appearances for Almeria (5400 minutes) he has one, goal, three assists... and 26 yellow cards. No reds, however.

Lopy's value on Transfermarkt is listed at just €6 million, but his contract runs through 2029, which may account for the high price.

Obviously we're looking at him as a potential Gana understudy.

Omari Hutchinson has been omitted from Ipswich Town’s squad.

What, if anything, can this possibly mean? Stay tuned…

And what's this stuff about Tyrese Campbell?

The 'kid' is 25 already and has been tearing out trees for, er, Stoke City and Sheffield Utd.

Surely not.
