Swansea will have to up Donnelly bid

Cliftonville chairman Gerard Lawlor is defending his u-turn over a prior agreement with Swansea City over a fee for Rory Donnelly as he invites the Welsh club to increase their bid to match Everton's.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers had had a £100,000 offer for the 19 year-old accepted and, with the striker impressed with the setup down there, Donnelly looked destined for the Liberty Stadium until Everton lodged a bid that was "considerably higher".

"Everton's bid is considerably higher than Swansea's," Lawlor says. "There is a major difference in the bids. They are miles apart.

"My job is to do the best thing for Cliftonville."

Though Rodgers has voiced his dismay at what he sees as a broken agreement, Cliftonville manager Tommy Breslin says the door is still open.

"Rory said that he was impressed by Swansea and by what Brendan Rodgers had to say.

"He said the facilities were good and that there was a great team spirit with no egos. The Northern Irish link with Brendan probably helped too.

"We expect the deal to be completed. We've got a fixture on Boxing Day and I'm planning for it without Rory."

Liverpool have also entered the race to sign the highly-rated teenager but have not as yet submitted a formal offer.
