Saha needs to earn new contract

David Moyes has said the onus is on Louis Saha to demonstrate he deserves a new contract at Everton as the club's leading forward enters the final six months of his existing deal at Goodison Park.

The 33-year-old is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1 January and, as yet, there has been no approach from Everton regarding an extension for a striker who, despite his age and injury record, is the club's only proven and experienced centre-forward.

Moyes remains open-minded on Saha's future and has not ruled out a new contract for the former Manchester United and Fulham striker before the end of the season. But the Everton manager admits he is looking to Saha, who has scored only twice in 14 appearances this season, to present his case for an extended career at the club during the second half of the season. "With respect to the older boys we tend to wait until later on before offering them contracts," said Moyes.

"We are not always throwing contracts around just because of their age. I think the boys know how we work. Davie Weir had a one-year contract every year for about four years. If people perform, the chairman always rewards them here.

"I am very open minded about Louis's future. We are not saying anything about it just now. I have never really given it an awful lot of thought. But there is an incentive there, as there is for anyone else. It's up to Louis to show what he is up to."
