Euro heartbreak for Young Lions

, 12 July, 7comments  |  Jump to most recent
Despite dominating 10-man Greece, backed by impressive displays from Everton's Ross Barkley, John Lundstram and Luke Garbutt, England U19s lost 2-1 to Greece in extra time of their European Championship semi-final.

Barkley, in particular, shone in a game that looked to be England's to win after goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino was sent off just before half time.

His replacement, Sokratis Dioudis, put in an inspired display to keep the Young Lions at bay, though, and after looking like they were playing for penalties, the Greeks capitalised on a slip at the back with 12 minutes remaining to score what proved to be the winner.

Good lad, Ross. I hope we'll get to see a bit more of you this year in your proper position.

Didn't see any games of the tournament but heard nothing but praise for Barkley and Garbutt. Lundstram also seems to have done well. Hoping now they can push on and challenge for a first team place in the next few seasons.

I watched yesterday's game. Lundstram looks very decent, he could turn out to be a very good midfielder if given the chance. Looked to me like he was similar to Jack Wilshere type player. I didn't watch any other games but commentators on Eurosport raved about him for his performances all tournament. Garbutt came on as a sub and has a sweet left foot but I couldn't really give an opinion about him to be honest.

I was thinking to myself during the game that Barkley has no hope of making it at Everton; it's fairley obvious the boy has serious potential, shows great balance and an eye for a pass, as well as a great shot, but his work rate is and his concentration will never pass the Davie Moyes eye test! I think his best position would be behind a main striker.

Anybody know if the three Everton players got much of a game last night? I was pleased to see that Garbutt got included in the squad. I'm hoping that he gets a lot of game time next season for us.

I happened to stumble upon the Greece match during extra time when trying to catch up with the tour de france. As soon as I spotted Barkley I sacked off the cycling and watched the remainder of the game.

Barkley seemed to be in the role of a central midfield playmaker, picking up the ball from deep and looking to make things happen. He gave the ball away 3 times in extra time. Twice with loose passes and once where he tried a nutmeg after dribbling around 2 players. On the upside he nearly scored with a header and seemed to ooze confidence every time he got on the ball.

Garbutt was deployed as a left winger ahead of a fullback named Robinson. He was neat and tidy in possession and although he never really committed the rightback he did put in a couple of dangerous curling left foot crosses. I didn't get to see him defend too much as England were mainly on top and as I mentioned he was positioned futher forward.

Lundstram was not on the feild during extra time.

I watched about the first hour of the match, before the kids overpowered me and put Scooby Doo on! Barkley was relatively quiet, although when he was on the ball his class stood out a mile. Didn't see much of Garbutt, not sure if he had come on by the time I turned over. Lundstram was quality. This is the first time I have seen him.

I recorded the game against France but didn't bother watching it when Barkley and Garbutt weren't starting only to miss a wonder goal by Lundstram. In the first hour against Greece he looked superb. His touch, passing and movement would have fit in with the Spanish way of playing. Admittedly the whole England side were fluid right across the front six.

Hopefully we'll see the emergence of Barkley and Lundstram this season as they looked definitely good enough to play in the Premier League. Hopefully not stuck out on the wings. Garbutt will make a good backup for Baines this year also.

Thanks for the updates above, have not seen anyting of Lundstram or Garbutt but great to hear we potentially have another two youngsters who cold step up with Barkely this season.

Hey, its like 3 new signings!

(Assuming the manager gives them some game time....)
