Late Barkley goals seals win

Dundee United 0 - 1 Everton
Everton's friendly against Dundee Utd at Tannadice goes ahead this evening after being postponed from yesterday due to heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch. Kick-off is at 7.45pm. Live coverage is available at evertontv (for £3.99 for tonight or an £18.99 package for six pre-season games).

Tim Cahill and Johnny Heitinga are back with the squad — although the Dutchman won't be playing and will be helping out on commentary instead — but Leighton Baines and Phil Jageilka are still on leave.

The rain held off, allowing the game to finally go ahead, in a fairy low-key manner befitting of the pre-season.

A lovely turn by Junior allowed him to quickly feed Rodwell who took a god shot on target. At the other end, Howard was lucky to be directly in the line of a quick shot from the Dundee striker, Gardyne.

Russell broke the Everton offside trap but lashed the bouncing ball over Howard's crossbar midway through the first half. Later, Russell got inside the area but again he lashed the chance well over the bar.

Marouane Fellaini replaced Jack Rodwell for the second half. Dundee United also made a change at the interval, Ryan Dow replacing Gary Mackay.

It was all pretty mundane until Francisco Junior produced a very aggressive tackle on Michael Gardyne and was lucky to get just a yellow card. Barkley replaced the rather exuberant Portuguese midfielder moments later.

Third Everton substitution as Conor McAleny makes way for Apostolos Vellios. Conor has worked hard up front tonight.

Fellaini gave away a free-kick but it was blasted over as Everton came under a bit of late pressure going into the last 10 mins.

With three minutes left Barkley fed Coleman on the right side of the area and dodged inside the defender nicely to clip a well-placed cross to the far post where Barkley nodded it back across goal and just inside the other post to give Everton the honours. Attendance: 6,537

Everton:
Howard; Hibbert, Neville, Distin, Duffy; Rodwell (46' Fellaini), Junior Y:52' (54' Barkley), Osman, Coleman, Anichebe (71' Garbutt), McAleny (65' Vellios).
Subs not used: Taudul.

Did anybody else notice that we have exactly the same kit as Dundee, only with a colour change?

It would be interesting to know how many Evertonians paid for the game but couldn't get it working.

The 'support' link was pathetic! I missed the whole game.

Funny thing is, I didn't even expect it to work! Typical Everton!

Fucking useless!

Yep, I did Chris. Keeper tops are exactly the same too. Our home kit has really grown on me. I like it a lot now I've seen the lads wearing it. That said, I'd welcome a bit more originality. At least Le coq sportif made us unique. Pink kit aside they did really well for us.

Just back in from the game. It was quite a sub-dued affair. Just before the game, I had to get a pass from the ground to go to the club shop for a Programme (£2) for someone, and saw a few players wondering up to the ground about 5 minutes before kick off. "You're late for work" I said. "We're not playing" said some fella in a Irish accent. Must have been Mr Gibson. They look quite different up close, and a lot leaner too.

To be honest, I was surprised by the amount of Scottish Evertonians who were there. Also lots of Ex Pats now living in Scotland.

When Naismith was leaving at the end there were chants of "Walkin' Away", then it was quite surprising to hear the chants from one section of "Hello, Hello we are the billy boys" Just young lads in one corner I think, but probably reflects the two horse race nature of footy up here.

In the first half with Hibbert and Neville as full-backs there was not much turf being chewed up down the lines and I don't think there was an over-lapping run I can recall. All I can say is it was a good goal by Ross Barkley and when watching live in a small ground like tonight, you can see he's the real deal. I think he really is. In the 2nd half a number 42 came on at left back with Phil Neville into a 5 man midfield. His name was not listed in the programme and no number 42 on the OS, but I think it was Conor McAleny who did get down the line a few times and put a few crosses in.

That's all.

Thanks for the Tannadice take, Tony.

That would have been Luke Garbutt at L/B who came on, the lad we nicked from Leeds. I know a few DU fans and although we have a nice link (Dunc and er, Alec Cleland?!) good to see Ross look good, score and most importantly send you boys back home with a win. Unless you're staying in Motherwell? I've been there. Don't.

Nice lead up by Seamus. What position was he in?
In fact anyone got the teamsheet with positions?

Anything to be read into Rodwell now wearing the number 8 shirt??

Ciaran,

Howard
Hibo Duffy [MotM, IMO] Distin Nev
Coleman Rodwell Junior Osman
McAleny Anichebe

Coleman was on right wing with Osman on left. Duffy won EVERY header and was solid and cool under pressure.

Thank God there was a goal as it was destined for 0-0 throughout! Barkley was awesome when he came on, proved to make the difference with strength and good hold-up play. I was also impressed with Garbutt and Junior. Anichebe looked disinterested and didn't even applaud the fans when he went off, like everyone else did.

Even in a pretty pedestrian game, Anichebe still throwing his arms in the air complaining how he was pushed/held/kicked/wronged in some way at every opportunity. Holding his leg/hip/stomach/face with his "Life is so unfair" face.

MAN THE FUCK UP

Rodwell sounded quiet. Early days but if he could impose himself on games like this it would help him secure a starting place for the beginning of the season.

Accurate comments about Duffy and big Vic. It was late last night when mistaking Conor McAleny for Luke Garbutt. Conor had a not bad first half and did ok when receiving ball to feet, but long punts up to him were no good. As for Jack, he seems to disappear for long periods of the game and you can forget he's playing, even when watching live. This was a complete contrast to Felli and Barkley in the 2nd half who dominated play. The game really showed what a big difference that quality players make.

"To be honest, I was surprised by the amount of Scottish Evertonians who were there. Also lots of Ex Pats now living in Scotland."

Me and my two sons were some of the Scots Evertonians (their first of many Everton games to come) and even I was suprised at the amount of Scots in the away end. Most had the strips on etc although I think there was an element of local neutrals in there as well. But there's definitely a big support this side of the border.

If anything DU had more of the ball and chances in the 2nd half but I was glad at the goal at the end, always makes these trips worth it.

No Baines in this team; has he travelled or is he still stuck in Manchester?

I also agree about Duffy, I thought Coleman did kinda-ok as well, but it was hard to tell because United's left back wasn't very good.

I hate to sound like 'one of those people' - because I've always been a big fan of Hibbert's defensive ability (especially the way he's shackled players like Walcott and Ronaldo in the past) - but was pretty poor last night. Most of United's good work came down his side, admittedly he faced 2 good players (Gary Mackay-Steven is a player we might see in the EPL in a few years), but he's faced better.

I just think it's because it's pre-season though and he isn't at the races yet.

There was also 1 or 2 Dundee Football Club chants (the neighbours over the road) from the Scottish fans in the away end.

Can anything be read into playing 4-4-2 in the 2 games so far?

Coleman did have a decent game but I've still not made my mind up about him. I'm sure he's lost some pace. I remember him knocking a ball past Ashley Cole and absolutely blitzing him. He doesn't look like he has that in him these days.

In EvertonTV commentary Johnny Heitinga was asked what he thought about Coleman with regards to his attacking. Heitinga said, "I don't think he knows what he's doing at times." He said it in a jokey manner but I think there's a lot of truth in that. He gets his head down and hopes for the best.

Didn't watch the game but is it fair to say that Junior impressed more than Rodwell?

If Moyes carries on from last season's end (which seems advisable) and plays Fellaini behind Jelavic then I imagine it could be Junior and rodwell competing for the central midfield spot alongside Gibson. Osman and Barkley could also be options. So long as its not Neville. Shudder....

Tommy Gourlay

To me Junior looked better, although he put his foot in and made a few dodgy tackles which the Suarez's of the world would get him carded for. On his last tackle he was essentially red carded (he was yellowed then subbed immediately after, which is a red in a friendly).

Rodwell looked good when he came forward a few times, although I still feel Rodwell isn't a player who should be played in a fast-paced ball-winning position like he is played in in midfield.

Oh yeah, and Junior on the ball also made a lovely spin turn that left his man retracing his steps! :)

It's accurate that Coleman doesn't know what he's doing on the right wing. He hasn't the natural skill to get past a full back when marked tightly on the winger. When he plays full back he arrives later in the move and has a bit more time and opportunity to use his pace.

He needs to be given a chance at right back, where he successfully played for Blackpool, or sold and the money spent on an actual winger.

Sam Hoare
34 Posted 20/07/2012 at 12:08:42
Trouble is Jon, that Blackpool conceeded plenty of goals and we don't. No doubt Coleman would do well offensively at RB but what about defending? Sure you watched the semi last year...
Jimmy Sørheim
35 Posted 20/07/2012 at 12:21:09
I agree with you Sam. I watched Coleman while at Blackpool and while he did well going forward he struggled with defending, both his tackle and positioning was a bit below par.

To be honest I just can not see Coleman getting any better as a winger, he needs playing time as a right back because that is where he belongs. He probably has to be loaned out again to Blackpool if he is ever going to get any better. Any top team in the championship will do, but he certainly can not stay at Everton as a right winger that is for sure.

With regards to Junior, I have to say this guy looks very decent, also Barkley is showing better form now then during the second half of last season. We have cover in the central of midfield, perhaps it is time we sold both Anichebe and Coleman. That way we can afford to bring in a real right winger. Pienaar can not handle being the only creative player in this team, other teams will have learned from the past and stop us on the left hand side, then we are clueless.

I feel very certain that if we do not get Pienaar then we will struggle to create chances for Jelavic, and we will be out of contention for Europa League by end of season because of it.

Jon Ferguson
36 Posted 20/07/2012 at 12:45:02
Sam - I agree that Coleman needs to improve his defensive duties. The question is, do we gain more in attack than we lose in defence?

I'm not saying he is the answer. I'd like to see him have a go there though. He definietly, no question in my mind, isn't a winger; and so, like I said originally, if we aren't going to play him right back we should sell him on and use the money to fund an actual winger or right back.

37 Posted 20/07/2012 at 12:46:36
Just watched the highlights. Junior's tackle would've been a straight red in Premier League, but he looked like a decent player though. We really need a backup striker before season starts, I'm worried if Jelavic gets injured, where the goals will come from.

I'm not sure wingers are what we need, or at least not in the traditional 'wide man always an option/outlet,' as the modern game wont really allow it.

Donovan and Pienaar are both good example of Moyes attacking players in that they were pass well have quick feet but are always to be found grafting in support of the full backs. Trevor Steven was the same. His partnership with Gary Stevens wasnt just about overlapping in the final third.

Coleman has a bit of pace, determination and strength. Unfortunately at the moment he is headless, lacks vision and relies on determination rather than a footballing brain. This could change but I doubt it.
