Cahill seals New York switch

MLS side confirms signing of Australian

New York Red Bulls have confirmed the acquisition of Tim Cahill from Everton.

The 32 year-old leaves Everton for a nominal £1m ($1.5m) fee after eight years and 278 appearances in all competitions for the Blues to link up with the likes of Thierry Henry in New York. As at Goodison, he will wear the No 17 jersey.

The Australian underwent a medical yesterday and agreed terms on a three-year deal with the MLS side.

Cahill was pictured at the MLS All Star game last night, during which Fox Soccer, citing their source, reported that Cahill will earn $3.5m per season with the Red Bulls.

His arrival won't be official until the Red Bulls receive his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC) but they plan to unveil him to the media in a press conference on Monday at Red Bull Arena.

He took part in his first training session [video] with the New York team today, though, as he settles into his new surroundings.

Cahill said of his new move: “I am very happy to start a new chapter of my career with the New York Red Bulls. As we have seen over the past few years, MLS has developed into a very competitive league with many talented players.

"I am impressed with what the Red Bulls are trying to accomplish in MLS and within American soccer and I am looking forward to this new challenge. I will do everything I can to help bring New York its first MLS Cup.

“I also want to thank everyone at Everton, from the club to tremendous supporters. It has been a privilege to be an Everton player for the past eight years and it was a very difficult decision to leave. I will always support Everton and I wish the club the best of luck in the future.”

Assuming the formalities of visa and international clearance are completed, Cahill's first chance to taste MLS action would be on Friday 3rd August against Houston Dynamo in Texas.

Before that, though, is a friendly against familiar foes in the form of Tottenham Hotspur in New Jersey that could see the Aussie icon make his bow in red and navy.

Steve,

Completely agree.

The legendary status and good memories were in serious danger of being tarnished should he have stayed longer.
However with both Cahill and Arteta gone it really feels like the end of an era!

Good Luck to him, I hope he wins them over in the Big Apple.

The fact the lad will probably be emotional when he clears his locker at Finch Farm says it all for me, players don't give a shite these days, he is one of a tiny few.

Watching the 'fans thank Tim' video just now made me remember how many goals he scored against the so-called 'top teams'. Man City must have hated him. A good player and great servant of this club.

Good bye, tiny Tim, and good luck, gutted you have left and even more so that I won't have you in my Fifa 13 Everton team when I go online. I might just go the Red Bulls now and again. You were not born a Blue but you have turned out to be a True Blue and a legend.

Thank You Tim Cahill. True Blue and a modern day legend (I reserve that tag for very few). Always gave 100%, and popped up with not just goals but big goals in big games. I wonder how many players have scored away at City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, the RS? The corner flags of NY won't know what's hit them.

For those who aren't so young but aren't so old either: I'd say there are the obvious heroes of 84-87. Then there's that clutch of outrageously talented players (whatever we think of some of them as people) who never won a pot with us but would have walked into the 84-87 sides, e.g. Rooney, Beardsley and Kanchelskis.

And then there's that next bracket – with the likes of Dobbo, Big Bob, Nigel Martyn, Lyonsy (for sheer grit), Limpar, Big Dunc and Tim Cahill. All the above being players who just made the Royal Blue heart soar. That's the lofty company Tim Cahill is in. Just delighted with the send-off he's had.

I wonder if we can get a loan deal for him come the end of the MLS season? Both him and Donovan and perhaps Henry to come and play the last few games of the season? Shit I hope not but you never know.

Always difficult to adjust to a different league. The pace is probably going to be slower and of course Tim might not necessarily get the best service to use his head. However if he can build good form I would like to see him back at Goodison Park on loan.

With regards to the video, it's surprising the difference between bulked up Cahill now and how he looked (small and nimble) when he first joined the club.

Disapointing to see the lad leave, he really deserver the support he is getting from the fans and best wishes.

One puzzling factor is he wage. I was always under the impression that it would be for one last big pay day and he's only on 42k ish a week once converted back to sterling and im sure he was on considerably more with us.

Love this video...it's probably one of the most impressive things I have seen a football player do. After Cahill helped Australia get their first points in a World Cup match. The players do a lap of honour. Cahill spots and Evertonian in the crowd, runs over to him and swaps his Australian Jersey for it.

Does any one know if there are plans for Timmy to say farewell at Goodison?? It would be a travesty of justice if he were not given the opportuunity to do a lap of honour and say goodbye to the supporters in person.

People will say giving Tim legend status may mock some of our elite, but I disagree. Ok, he didn't win a medal with us but the he always gave 100%, always put the fear into the oppositions defence and more importantly gave us supporters a feeling of pride. He took on the mantle from Big Dunc and served us with class both on and off the pitch. In these days of triple flips and robot dancing the only goal celebration that got the hairs on my neck tingling was Tim's beating of the corner flag.
The MLS are going to love Tim and he deserves every plaudit and thank you that is coming his way.
The club need to make sure he comes back as a guest so us supporters can give him the ovation he has earnt.

Adam Carey@240,
Interesting point you make about "legend status" for Cahill could be seen to "mock some of our elite" and point out that he never won a medal. Dave Hickson is often considered to be amongst our elite but I don't remember him winning anything either. Regarding someone as a "Legend" is like your own favourite player or hero, a personal choice.

Ray #247, and I'm sure we could list any number of players who have won medals, but the majority wouldn't consider "Legends".

Ray @247,

I agree totally. If you give everything for your entire career with a club and don't win anything, you have to look at the entire setup and the players around you; only so much you can do as one man.

It is personal choice assigning legend status to any player, if lots of people feel the same way then they are more likely to be remembered as one.

Tim Cahill in my opinion has been Moyes's best signing and what I deem a proper old school footballer: passionate, committed, loyal. Gutted he is going but he fully deserves legend status and to milk the American gravy train for the last few years of his career.

Matt, that is my point. Personal choice. Ferguson, for me, would never be considered a "Legend". Maybe an iconic figure for fans to identify with, but never in a million years could he be regarded as an Alex Young or an Alan Ball.

Just churlish to be anything but positive about the man.

Lionel Messi he wasn't and his public exhibition of support for his criminal brother wasn't clever but overall, and that's how you've got to judge people, he was fabulous.

For a period of time when anyone not a supporter would struggle to name an Everton player he was the public face of this club - a genuine star.

Many many thanks Tim Cahill your name will never be forgotten.

Great having you in our team and you have been the best value for money we have had. I hope that you have a really fantastic time playing in the MLS.

I just wish that we could find some more talent from our 'scouting system'... I also wish that we could acquire players as quickly as we seem to lose them!!

Ray@251 and Matt@248, you both make valid points. Tim was a personal favourite of mine much like Duncan Ferguson before him. They both had the ability to get more passion from the fans which some better players couldn't do. I can settle for Icon status for both players though.

The Yanks have bought a real bargain and Tim will do well over here. I can't wait to see him play and will be in Toronto to watch him against our 'local' team, Toronto FC. We will, of course, be wearing our Everton gear to the game. As for the lad himself, I have already had my say on the loss of a fantastic True Blue and wish him every success.

Tiny was a monster. Priviledged to have seen him play and give so much for the Blues. He will be a great scout for us for years to come and if he can find another like him that would be great.

No, definitely not the most talented we've had but, my god, what a player... what a servant... and what a lad!!!

I've never known an Everton player get as many accolades as Tim has got – and that's all due to the magnificent service he gave the club while inspiring others around him. Can you just imagine the reception he'd get if he ever came back? The roof would come off the place.

Some bitter red bastard summed him up in work yesterday when he said, "I'm glad to see the back of him, he's terrorised us for years." Yeah, them and many others... Good luck across the pond, Tim... and I'm sure, like many other Blues, we'll all be looking out for the New York red Bulls results in future.

Corner flags beware!!!

Managed to get 2 tickets for next Friday's game Houston Dynamos v New York Red Bulls even though it was "sold out" on the home team website. Coincidentally it is in area130 - right by the corner flag.

Tim, we will be the ones with the #17 shirts ready for your autograph!!!

Any other Evertonians going?

Gerry - will he be able to play? Won't he have to serve a ban for that red card or are they not transferable?

Not sure, Nathan - but I will be sat where the players enter/exit the pitch, so hopefully he will notice my shirt and come over - I'll have my camera ready for y'all :)
