Belgian gets a 4-year contract; takes No 11 jersey
Everton completed the acquisition of Belgium international forward Kevin Mirallas from Olympiacos for around £6m today, bringing the number of incoming players this summer to three.

The 24-year-old signs a four-year contract at Goodison after undergoing a successful medical on Saturday and joins David Moyes's other close-season acquisitions, Steven Naismith and Steven Pienaar.

The 24 year-old wasn't registered in time to feature in against Manchester United tomorrow evening but Mirallas, who will wear the No 11 shirt, told evertontv that he was happy to be on Merseyside: "I am very happy because Everton is a big club and for me it's a very good opportunity.

"I've known Everton have been following me for a while and after talking with the manager I decided that coming to Everton was the best opportunity for me.

"I know this is a great club with great supporters and a club that has the ability win a lot of games in the Premier League. That's why I came."

Mirallas attracted attention from Everton and Arsenal with a 20-goal haul in 25 games in Greece last season, having enjoyed prior spells in France for St Étienne and Lille.

He has also won 28 caps for his country, scoring five goals and will link up with his international team-mate Marouane Fellaini.

Mirallas Deal Done! Sounds like great news to me - in 8 months lose lose Cahill, Straq, Saha up front, gain Jelavic, Naismith, Mirallas.

And Pienaar instead of Rodwell.

That's a huge squad improvement - don't you think?

Awesome. Might take him some time to bed in but think this is exactly the sort of transfer we needed. Good work Everton.

I agree it was public but didn't think it was that protracted for Everton.
I'd only heard of this about 4 or 5 days ago.

Great bit of business.
JR out for £12m and Mirallas in for £6m.
And he's only 24.

Fear the Blues.

Happy he has signed, I also think we are not going to sell amyone else unless a bid comes in and a player throws his toys out of the pram, and just don't think baines is like that, fella maybe but I don't see where that bid will come from, it was rumored Chelsea but they have already strengthened there midfield.

Team shape totally transformed now, got to be 4:2:3:1 now - any back four formation, then Fellaini and Gibson anchoring midfield, Pienaar, Naismith and Mirallas with flexibility to inter change position and Jelavic up top. This would allow Baines and the RB to overlap and provide width. We might see Coleman transformed as an attacking RB.
Plan B - push Felli up to cause mayhem and feed off the knock downs.

Happy days !

What a brilliant signing. Looks the part on you tube. Let's not forget we beat the arse to his signature.

Getting really good vibe for this season!

Top 4??? Anyone agree? Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea nailed on top 3, then choose from us, Newcastle, Spurs, Red Shite and Arsenal. Arsenal looking weaker, average and don't have RVPs goals, red shite... shite! – and don't have goals in them.

I watched Spurs against Newcastle yesterday and both sides looked decidedly average. COYB!!

Yeah, tbf, interest announced tuesday/wednesday, signed by sunday...that's pretty fantastic going. I expect another senior will come in as well, either on loan if we end up managing to get Niang (although it seems a bit doubtful) or permanently. I think we could do with another creative player personally, who can play on the wings.

So first 11 this season? Howard, Hibbert, Jags, Heitinga, Baines, Gibson/Neville, Fellaini, Pienarr, Naismith/osman, Mirallas, Jelavic.

Bench of - goalie, Neville, Coleman, Osman, Anichebe, Junior, Distin and..?....the bench is the problem I think. If we add one or two more though, I think we an approach this season with as much optimism as we use to 3 or 4 years ago. Plus, if we can get Donovan and Cahill back in January, when other teams are dreading the African nations, we can benefit from it.

All I could do with now, is a mighty trashing for Liverpool...oo hang on!

Also, I know this should all be about Everton..but I can't help showing people this: http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/10-facts-about-oussama-assaidi - Look at number 9...they've actually referenced Fifa.

Delighted with the signing, but has anyone read the comments on the Echo slagging the Blue Union and praising Kenwright? What exactly did he do to earn the plaudits? We released nine players, sold Cahill and Yobo for around four million plus got rid of a player that the league champions think will go on to do a great job for them. In return we have brought a player in on a free bought a player for more money than we sold him for despite him being two years older and a relatively unknown winger. No guarantees Moyes will have any further funds despite us still having a small squad and still Kenwright doesn't feel the need to inform the fans how he will take the club forward with genuine funds for our manager.

IF, and I say IF for a reason, but if our team stays as it is and lines up something like this against Villa...
Howard
Hibbert Heitinga Distin Baines
Gibson Fellaini
Mirallas Naismith Pienaar
Jelavic

Does anybody else agree that this could POTENTIALLY be our strongest and most potent first 11 under Moyes' stewardship?
I'd like to see it in action but it does get me a little excited. We do need to bulk the squad up though, as our subs bench may need a few 'rabbits out of the hat' to come on and change a game.
What do you think folks?

I think if we pull off Niang as well we will finally have some depth in attack. I'm very excited.

It means also that next year we should only have to strengthen the defence, which is cheaper. So hopefully we can hold on to our best players and not have to sell.

Finally we can be optimistic before the start of the season.

Don't get too excited, everyone — I just heard an interview with the red-headed bug-eyed one and he thinks he's not ready for first team action yet. Probably needs a couple of seasons under our number one coach Stubbsy to get him defending corners and learning to get back and not forward.

Looks like we are going to try something different from the usual 4-5-1 with these attacking players on board.

Naismith and Mirallas playing alongside Jelavic will give any team a run for their money.

If Jelavic can weigh in with 20 goals this season, who knows where we can finish ?

Rodwell was never going to be a prolific scorer, so this may prove to be a very shrewd move. Good luck Kevin and now let's ruin the Sky love-in for the Mancs tomorrow.

P.S. Thank you Mr. Henry for giving £120m to Kenny to waste on utter shite !

Great value in the transfer market this season after the sillyness after past few years.

Not convinced about Niang, not sure we can spend 6 million on a player who will maybe make it, prefer to spend it on a player who goes straight in the team.

Kev Tully, depends if you call 4-2-3-1 (as I hope to see us this season) or 4-1-4-1 the same as 4-5-1. 4-4-2 is stone dead. It's a very long time since any successful team used it. Even if two strikers are named on a teamsheet, one will always be behind the other or on the wing.

Good player, but will need time. When I look at the team we have quite a few new boys - Jelly, Nais, Gibson and now Mirallas. Unlike other sides, we don't have the luxury of being able to blood new players slowly, so I expect us our team to fire on all cylinders after 4-5 games.

After that - no excuses really. Moyes has done a good job shipping Bily, Saha, Rodwell and Cahill and bringing in Jelly, Gibson, Mirallas and Nais with change left over to bring Peanuts back.

Kevin Tully
34 Posted 19/08/2012 at 15:54:14
Aidan, we may even have 3 strikers on the pitch from the start of some games this season !

It will be our most interesting season so far if we do. Moyes played Cahill behind our main centre forward for many years, but he had to cover midfield duties trying to break up play etc.

I definately think Moyes has had a change of heart by signing the top scorer in the Greek League, we may see a real 4-3-3 in some games - something we have been crying out for on here for some time, mix it up a little !!

Aidan Wade
35 Posted 19/08/2012 at 16:14:40
Agreed Kev, I like 4-2-3-1 as a formation with 3 good attacking players behind front man, should mean it looks like 4-3-3 when attacking (at pace? would be nice...) without the ball we have the bodies to press high up the pitch and if need be, crowd out the midfield. At the same time have 2 breaking up play in front of the back 4 so not as vulnerable to opposition breaks.

Sounds deadly on paper, hopefully we can execute it properly. Pre-christmas last year the was problem was an utter lack of movement, if everybody is just standing around it doesn't matter what formation we use.

Aidan Wade
36 Posted 19/08/2012 at 16:23:23
Adding to that, what I like most about the indications of Mirallas, he doesn't do standing around.
Lee Courtliff
37 Posted 19/08/2012 at 16:22:05
Mirallas doesn't even need to be all that great.

As long as he is quick and technically sound he will add another dimension to our play.

I definely agree we should line up with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

I've got my ticket for tomorrow night and I can't fucking wait.

Pienaar to score first and us to win 2-1.

105/1......definitely worth a quid. COYB.

Mike Gaynes
38 Posted 19/08/2012 at 16:22:38
Kevin, why is it a change of heart? Last year Moyes signed the leading scorer in the Argentine league and the leading scorer in the Scottish league. But I don't think we're going to see a 4-3-3 except when we always have -- we're down a goal with ten minutes left.

"Can the people in the Lower Bullens please sit down" will be a common announcement this season.

Having a few players who can weigh in with 10+ goals is a real possibility. I'd love to see Jelavic (20+) and 10+ from Pienaar, Naismith, Mirallas, Fellaini....and Baines from all those lovely free kicks were going to get outside the box. I just really hope we get off to a good/reasonable start.

It's going to be a big year.

Kevin Tully
40 Posted 19/08/2012 at 16:34:11
Mike, for the first time we have got 3 bona fide strikers who can all bring goals to the team - surely we will won't be leaving 2 of them on the bench ? We may not start with all 3 every game, but I can see a change of formation this season on the cards.

If you are referring to Straqualursi as a top centre forward - I have seen better players turning out for Cammell Laird's !! He was a last ditch loaner because he was the only option - along with Drenthe.

Aidan Wade — I get what you are saying about immediate impact but to my mind Niang will be worth the initial outlay simply if in a couple of years he is worth 3 or 4 times what it costs us. I don't know whether he will be but I imagine that will be one of the factors the club will consider when making a decision. Any deal is a gamble (including Mirallas) until the player has shown they can consistently perform in the Premier League.

We'll see Si, Niang is described assomething special, and interest of some top clubs is flattering but (according to wikipedia) with 5 goals in 30 games for a tier two French side, I'd be a bit nervous investing so much in him. Moyes will have had a good look during the trial, I (and I imagine Moyes) would like to get him on a loan-first-fixed-price-later deal if we can.

Lots of question marks with Niang if Wikipedia is to be believed (one of which is his actual age) but that wasn't really my point, Aidan.

What if we lucked out and happened across the next Messi in a lowly Continental league when everyone else was looking the other way. How much would you pay to bring him to the club even if he wasn't ready to go into the first team straight away? I am not saying that Niang is THAT good, but he may be worth the £6 million we currently have to spend in the long term. If that leaves us a little weaker this season, but a lot stronger 2 or 3 years further on I would hope the club weigh things up very carefully.

For some strange reason, the Kevin Mirallas transfer reminds me of the Bilyaletdinov one. Both transfers came out of nowhere. Moyes consulted with a third party before concluding the deals for Mirallas (Fellaini) and Bilyaletdinov (Hiddink). Let's hope Mirallas works out better than Bilyaletdinov.

And Ray Roche, Kevin Campbell was not The Bolloxs. He had a good loan spell where he scored 9 goals in 8 games. That was the stuff of legend and helped save us from relegation but in the years that followed he never managed to score more than 12 goals a season.

And personally I think 12 goals a season is very average. To put that into context, Andy Johnson got 12 in his debut season and James Beattie got 11. You would hardly call Johnson or Beattie 'The Bollox'.

I am pretty sure Man Utd will return with a big bid for Leighton Baines before the transfer deadline. Probably a bid so big that David Moyes will not be able to turn it down.

I fully expect Leighton Baines to be a Man Utd player before 1 September. I think Moyes will be sad to see Baines go but the cash will be a big bonus and I also think Moyes might already feel that Luke Garbutt is ready to step into the hole left by Baines.

Youtube and Championship Manager accolades aside, Fellaini raves about this kid and possibly more importantly Mo helped to persuade Kev to join us, so surely he wouldn't then go and promptly leave himself.

A bit like I thought it was less likely Baines would leave once we re-signed Pienaar.

Seriously people, I believe our squad as it stands has the potential to be something quite special. Please don't let us lose another big name, and then hopefully bring in a couple of decent loans to add depth and this could actually be an exciting season to follow the Blues!

We seem to have a couple of strikers who have the know-how to do well. Only time will tell but my concern is that Naismith comes out of the blocks fast. I assume he will play just behind vić tomorrow with a midfield of Pienaar, Gibson and Fellaini. Oh! I nearly forgot Osman.

If Moyes plays Naismith as a fifth midfielder, then it's pretty obvious he is going to play it very tight. Personally, I see Naismith as more of a forward player with the option of Mirallas when he is available.

The back four is picking itself these days with the options of Distin, Duffy, Coleman and Pip. I do hope the runours about Baines and Man Utd are untrue otherwise we may not get a genuine performance from him tomorrow. Remember the Lescott affair?

We almost have a team now. Good players in all positions except right back, no offence to the ones we have. The bench needs a bit of strength for when we get the inevitable injuries, hopefully Moyes still has some moves to make before the end of the transfer window.
Ernie Baywood
68 Posted 20/08/2012 at 01:56:27
The thing is, will he still pick Osman?

The team looks strong, even to the point where we've arguably got the ideal players to convert 4-5-1 to 4-4-1-1 and even the fabled 4-2-3-1 when we attack. Pienaar is made for those positions. The attacking 3 behind Jelly all completely interchangeable if we need to mix things up. Options - Fkin hell where did this come from? And the best part... no prospect that big Fella plays anywhere but smack bang in the centre of midfield where he can be one of the world's best rather than an awkward gangly forward.

I'm excited. And I just can't hide it.

Barkley doesn't make mistakes, he's the second coming of the messiah and the messiah doesn't make mistakes. Suarez wears number 7. If 7 were a lucky number he would have been born with teeth that fit inside his mouth.

Why bring back Stracq when you can bring back Brett Angell?... Or better yet, Chris Angell, mind-freak. Cahill could jump pretty high to head home crosses but Chris Angell can levitate. Sign him up.

Sorry Ray. Bit harsh, I know. No one was less of a hit than Ray Atteveld.

You're definitely on the list of all-time Everton greats (called Ray) – somewhere between Rayne Rooney and and Ray Kanchelskis.

Rahman Talib #535, the number 3 is as well. All we need now is a black cat to moon walk out in front of us carrying a rabbit's foot in it's mouth that it hacked off with a horse show and we'll win the league!

Seems a bit odd to me that we beat Arsenal to his signature. Apart from being way ahead of us financially even before they offloaded VP they would have jumped at the chance of signing such a talented replacement, so did we get lucky? Obviously time will tell... I just hope the lad lives up to the label.

Any idea when Mirallas comes available for Fantasy League inclusion.
I do the BT Yahoo one and no sign of his name yet.

Sounds like a great signing - positive news.

I'm a qualified coach and some of the multiple formations some of you lot have come up has tied me in knots!!!! I think one of you mentioned football manager earlier.....too much watching dots on screens and thinking its real!!! That said, at least many are now realising that 4-4-2 is gone; by throwing on another striker in the traditional "subuteo" style formation you expose yourself in other parts of the pitch.

Who said 3-4-3? Sorry, despite Wigan's risky but impressive and gung-ho escape last time around, over the course of a season that is footballing suicide.

Talking of transfers, I see Sunderland have just bought Fletcher from Wolves for £12m... So that's Sunderland down this season. He's a jink that bloke.

Ha-ha. Good call, Brendan!

Michael or Lyndon - how is possible to post anonymously? It's not in the proper spirit of things, surely?
