Everton name 19-man PL squad

, 5 September, 21comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton have named their Premier League squad, comprising just 19 of the allowed total 25 players over 21. The squad must contain no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the homegrown criteria; the remainder of the squad must be homegrown.

The players listed in Everton's squad are: Anichebe, Baines, Gibson, Hibbert, Jagielka, Neville, Osman, Coleman, Distin, Fellaini, Gueye, Heitinga, Howard, Jelavic, Mucha, Naismith, Pienaar, Mirallas, Oviedo. Of these, we calculate that six would be classed as homegrown.

The published lists do not include registered Under-21 players, there being no limit on the number that can be included in the full squad.

Looks like, at a glance, that officially makes Everton's "threadbare" squad the smallest in the Premier League. Although moneybags Chelsea have named just 20. In fact only five clubs have named the full 25, and that includes none of the Sky 4/5/6 (oaky, maybe Spurs... but they don't count, do they?).

According to Sky, however, Everton have registered a whopping 29 players under the age of 21!!!

Michael, only 29? You do realise that we need to fatten them up and sell them on just to stay still don't you!

So they haven't included the new Belgian midfielder?! I don't understand...

So what about Ofoe?

I guess you can't include a player who is not technically yours yet. I am sure if Ofoe gets ratified today he can be added easily enough.

If you register less than 25, you have spare places left, for Ojidja-Ofoe etc.

U21 Ryan...

Interesting that even a club like Everton with a strong youth setup and a record of bringing through young players we only have 6/19 "homegrown".

The fact you can still have 17/25 foreign players makes this rule an absolute farce in my opinion and I think that if somebody (for example, a young foreign player kept out of the squad due to this rule) challenged it in court it wouldn't be upheld. Just lipservice UEFA pays to the future of the game, much like the financial fairplay rule that City's sponsorship deal urinates on.

I thought I heard somewhere today that a PL club is having problems trying to "add" someone to the squad they have submitted? Was it Stoke and Owen?

It's a bit confusing, ie, once submitted, regardless of size of squad, is that your lot? Or is it that if you are under the 25 limit, and ok on the homegrown / foreign balance, you can add players up to the limit? ie, free transfers?

I'm struggling a bit with our VOO late late loan deal as, if approved by Fifa, he's not a free transfer – so can he be added?

What few digits I have are crossed as the news today on Dazza is worrying and I'm not looking forward to being without him for a full month... if indeed that's the case.

Mark (818), what I heard regarding Stoke is that they had submitted their 25 so would now have to drop some unlucky kid for Mercenary Owen to take his place. Wonder how Mickey feels about that and if he can look the fella in the eye...

Your 'homegrown' players tend to be Under-21 though, so not on the list. Also, we sell ours for lots of money.

Owen more likely to look the fella in the kneecap.

I make it seven 'homegrown' players:

Neville, Jags, Victor, Ossie, Baines, Hibbert, Gibson (been on Man Utd's books since 2004).

Will Naismith class as homegrown due to his time up north? I thought that they count the four nations as the same for these purposes.

Does anyone know when the decision on VOO is due by FIFA?

Forget the young players: they're bottom of the U21 league, thanks to our great backroom boys, defensive maestro's Stubbs, Weir, Holden etc. Until we get decent proven coaches, who may even have the temerity to question King David's tactics, we are never going to have the successes of the past with the likes of Rooney and Jeffers. DM prefers yes men who don't question his or BK's rule.

Would they be the coaches that brought through Rodwell and Barkley Mick? WOuld that be the same generation that just won the under 18s? Perhaps Merseyside is just strangely more talented than the rest of the country and have just been destroyed by our coaches? Maybe, however, they're still just as talented and have had a few bad results. If that coaching list read Sharp, Gray, and Ferguson then regardless of results no one would have a word to say about them. Instead people who know nothing about the coaching set up are deriding the professional expertise of a person based on nothing mroe than the fact they don't like defenders. Arsenal's set up is packed with them. Why would DM allow some junior back room academy coach to question his tactics? How about he just puts his team sheet up on ToffeeWeb and take the majority poll? DM doesn't need any yes men, they coach the reserves and he picks the team because he's the manager like it should be at a football club.

I must say that our youngsters have not done so well and winning brings confidence. I cannot see any of our present bunch of youngsters knocking at the first-team door.

Testimony to the above is the sight of McFadden being brought on before them. Barkley and Junior must break through soon.

Is it true that Anichebe was on the verge of being sold for around £3 million or was that all paper talk? I personally was hoping he was going to be sold in the transfer window; he seems very injury-prone and the money could've been used elsewhere.
