Vellios ends Euro qualifiers on a high

Apostolos Vellios came on as a second-half substitute for Greece U21s as they finished their European Championship qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win over Cyprus.

Neither side could progress to the Finals but Vellios has been enjoying the experience that can only help his development as he seeks to break back into Everton's first team.

Besides his first pre-season game, he has not got any playing time at all. It is not like Jelavic has been as prolific as last season.

Seems like he needs to go out on loan to get playing time. This guy has goals in him as he showed last seaseon, but he needs playing time at a higher level then the reserves.

So you're saying we should drop Jelavić for Vellios?

Big fan of Vellios. Hope to see him get more opportunities this season. After a decent spell he seemed to just vanish. Seems to have the right attributes for a British-style centre-forward.

Phil (#936) - is that the only way to read Jimmy's post?

Obviously he should answer for himself for absolute clarity, but I would like to see 20 / 25 minutes for some of the young lads on a fairly regular basis, and it seems reasonable that Vellios could replace Jelavic.

Hate to say it (because he's a red) but the fact that young Sterling has just been called into the England squad indicates to me that the thing to do with young players is give them a bit of game time. They're never going to improve unless they get on the pitch now and again. I vote for giving Vellios a run out.

Kev, I agree... but let's be honest – Sterling got a call-up solely because he plays for Liverpool. Barkley could score 3 in every game till the next England fixture and not get a call up.

Not sure if we would want our young players to be distracted by senior international duty anyway, but surely the main thing about Raheem Sterling is that he hasn't looked out of place in their team, is obviously a better option than some of their senior players, and despite having made some errors he is still being encouraged to show what he can do.

Apparently Sterling was given a public dressing down about his poor attitide by Rogers on their tour of the States, but has obviously knuckled down and earned his stripes.

What! He was given a dressing gown? With stripes? The next thing will be slippers, no doubt. I really don't think that would work with Velios.

Hmmm.... Vic or Vellios — now ponder that, if you will?

WTF — Jelavic has not been as prolific?!?

We have played three games... he will get a bagfull again this season.

Vellios gives it everything but is not in the same class as Jelavic, simple as that.
