Sylvain Distin, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Jan Mucha were among the overage players as Everton Under-21s took on Blackburn Rovers U21s behind closed doors at Finch Farm today.

There was some good passing by the Blues in the early stages as Grant and Gueye went close. A vital interception by Jones denied Rovers at the other end.

Grant and Hope were next to test the Blackburn goalkeeper before Rovers' took the lead on 24 minutes when a corner swung in deflected off Hallam Hope at the far post.

Jorge goes close to scoring a second for Blackburn Rovers with a curling effort, while Magaye Gueye's free-kick is deflected narrowly over.

Everton levelled things before the break, when Francisco Junior played in Conor Grant to finish neatly on 42 minutes.

Francisco Junior picked up a Yellow card after 53 minutes.

A Gethin Jones header beat the advancing keeper but it was cleared off the line by a retreating Rovers defender.

Luke Garbutt, returning form a spell out injured, replaced Ibou Touray at left-back on 61 minutes.

After twice going close to adding to his impressive goal tally for the year, defender Shane Duffy used his head to block a shot at the other end.

Blackburn finally took the lead when Bruno Ribeiro twisted and turned in the area to then lash a strike in off the upright on 75 mins.

Duffy went agonisingly close with another header, before Garbutt cut inside to try his luck on his weaker foot. His shot was on target but saved.

Everton U21s: Mucha; Browning, Touray (61' Garbutt), Junior (Y:53'), Duffy; Distin, Grant (83' Forrester), Hitzlsperger; Hope, Gueye, Jones (88' Kelly).
Subs: Taudul, Pennington.

No sign of Gibson which suggests he won't yet be in the squad this weekend.
