Heritage Trail opens on Saturday

On Saturday, the new Everton Park Heritage Trail will be formally opened at a ceremony at St George's Church at 10:30am.

This will be followed by a guided tour within the park at 11:45am when a horse and carriage will transport one of the area's most senior residents, 91-year-old Bob Draper, along with other VIPs, from the gates at the back of the church to the first information board within the park.

The circular route is just over a mile long and features 13 boards highlighting the ancient, social and football history of the district.

Trail walkers will discover the site of the Queen's Head pub on Village Street where, in 1879, St Domingo's adopted the name Everton Football Club.

Further up the trail is Rupert's Tower featured on Everton's crest. Then comes the story of the famous Toffee Shop.

This is a local initiative, delivered by a group that sees Everton and its regeneration at the centre of everything they do. It is a free event and everyone is welcome.

Local guides will soon be available to take official groups or interested individuals around the trail. A comprehensive educational pack is being prepared for local schoolchildren to give them a real pride in their famous district.

Great idea. Well done to all those who have given up their time to make it happen.
