Star defender commits until 2017
Phil Jagielka has again committed his future to Everton after signing a two-year extension to his contract that would keep him at Goodison Park until 2017.

The England international has become an indispensable member of David Moyes's squad since arriving from Sheffield United five-and-a-half years ago.

Always thought he would be an excellent signing back in 2007 when we brought him and Baines in (who have progressed together). He's had his ups and downs (Fiorentina, the Semi, the terrible injury) but he's been our best centre back under Moyes and, when in top form, has kept world class forwards quiet. Glad he's signed on for more.

He has always had Torres in his arse pocket every time he marked him.

I like Jag, he is easy our best centre half but I wish we would stop tying down players on big contracts well into their mid-30's.

Great News!!!!

Jags will be our captain in two years or less. One of the best defenders in the league and a committed player on and off the pitch.

Lets hope we can bring in a long term partner for him either now or in the summer.

He needs to get back at CB with a partner he can work with. 2 clean sheets so far in the season is an embarassment considering the supposed quality of defenders we have. At the start of the season it looked as though Jags was getting back to pre-injury form but recently (before his switch to RB) he seems to have dropped in standards. Well worthy of a new contract though as buying osmeone even half as good as him would cost big money.

I heard it was a 4yr contract but it doesn't really matter as he'll be here for longer! Gr8 news! Over to you now Moyes!

Ofoe coming or not — you would have expected a move immediately; there hasn't been... so there is a message in that.

Very good player, now let's see who we can get in to be his partner in central defence. Shame Forren seems to go Fulham... Distin ain't getting younger, Heitinga is on his way out and Duffy is probably too limited a player yet.

No.1 CB we have after a shaky spell last season. Needs to be CB again asap as Heitinga is a disaster at the moment.

My instinct says all these players wouldn't be signing contracts if they already didn't have an assurance from Moyes that he would remain, too.

Im in two minds about this. On the one hand im glad one of our better players will remain at the club, however, on the other he would have been 33 when his last contract was to expire and now we have signed him until he's 35. I would have though the club would have waited and seen how his performances and injuries would pan out over the next season before just offering yearly extensions. Now we have a high earner on the books until his 35th Birthday, for a club with our debt getting larger because of wages, thats typical business sense by our leaders!

I think centre backs, of all outfield players, can go on for longer. Experience certainly outweighs athleticism. Personally I think Distin is playing as well as he ever has done and he's 35!
