Season › 2012-13 › News Osman also set for new deal? Lyndon Lloyd , 4 January, 14comments | Jump to most recent According to The Telegraph, Leon Osman will imminently join Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman in signing a new contract with Everton. The suggestion merits just a brief mention in Chris Bascombe's report on the release of the Club's 2011-12 accounts and there has been no confirmation elsewhere of contract negotiations with the 31 year-old midfielder. Jagielka, 30, signed a two-year extension to his current Goodison deal and Coleman, 24, signed on for another 5½ years. Osman's current terms expire in June 2014. I hope, given that he's 31, he gets 4 years. He's one of DM's favourites so I would be shocked if this goes through and then Moyes wasn't to sign on for longer. Especially with Jags and Coleman already in the bag. Steve Edwards 2 Posted 05/01/2013 at 00:05:36 Well, fancy that. Never thought that would happen. You could knock me over with a feather. Next! Bjørn-Ivar Pedersen 3 Posted 05/01/2013 at 00:10:08 If we really are trying for CL, then we need Osman to fulfill our quota for players coming through our academy....that's the reason we need Osman and Hibbert...because the younger talents we had we sold.....so I cheer this one. Anthony Jaras 4 Posted 05/01/2013 at 00:45:49 It makes me laugh that our supporters still can't see how important Leon Osman is for Everton. He retains the ball, slows down play, links the defence to the midfield, scores goals, makes goals and most import mostly, bleeds Everton.I really don't know what else he is expected to do.Top player, top professional, top re-signing.Baines next please. Paul Ellam 5 Posted 05/01/2013 at 09:23:04 I hope he does. I know he has his off days but I see him as a very important member of the squad. He also contributes some very crucial goals. A 4-year deal should be fine! Tony Cheek 6 Posted 05/01/2013 at 09:46:17 Great to see Leon in form, a very important player for us now. I have criticized him in the past, but AT LAST playing week-in, week-out in the position he is best in, showing us what a skillful player he is. Now... if he could just score goals...! Ian Bennett 7 Posted 05/01/2013 at 11:55:06 Good news I guess, but I can only see the wage bill increasing, with the TV money going out through the door. New contracts = agent fees and further player payments.... Greg Lambden 8 Posted 05/01/2013 at 12:04:39 Ossie still gives the ball away in important areas far to often for me. He can't / won't tackle and isn't a centre mid. His best position is just behind the striker but we have at least 3 players who are better at that role. Mr Osman meet Mr Bench..... Graham Lloyd 9 Posted 05/01/2013 at 16:46:27 Ossie is a great team player. I hope he signs for the rest of his career. Christopher Kelly 10 Posted 05/01/2013 at 17:54:17 LOL Greg...To me this isn't the news we need.Blah blah sign up Coleman, Dystin, Ossie etc. great. We need NEW players.. Fuck this board that avalanches us with contract extensions as the transfer window opens. This will not close the gap and get us into the CL. Real news, please. John Ford 11 Posted 05/01/2013 at 18:09:07 Fair point Christopher. I'm glad Leon is re-signing but the timing of these contract extensions isn't a coincidence. If the only real business we do in January is to re-sign existing players, it will be a great shame. Do the board think fans are daft? This is active inertia! Giving the appearance of doing something but actually doing nothing at all. James Martin 12 Posted 05/01/2013 at 18:14:20 Ha, Greg — good one 'he isn't a centre mid' — he's only been playing there all season where we've stayed in and around the top 4 and wiped the floor with most teams' midfields. Who was that along with Pienaar putting Mata and Hazard in the shade? Running the derby game alongside Neville against Gerrard et al? As for goals, he should have had 3 this season, how many more do you expect from a deep lying midfielder? Along with Baines, he's been comfortably one of our best players this season. Yet people still see him as a Moyes favourite, surely Fellaini, Jelavic, and Gibson all fall into this category as well, or do they not count? Greg Lambden 13 Posted 05/01/2013 at 18:27:47 James 603 – we are 5th despite Osman IMO. He has cost us more points than he's won us. He makes a habit of losing the ball in the middle of the park and teams break quickly and are at our back 4. He's lightweight and easily gets knocked off the ball – if everyone's fit he's good for a bench spot at best. Saying that, he's been a good servant to the club and more than deserves his contract extension. James Flynn 14 Posted 06/01/2013 at 00:52:47 Anthony (442) - Well said and leave it be. The little guy who can pushed (kicked, trampled, elbowed, shoved... depending on the referee) will always be open to the ridicule Ossey gets.Peculiar, he's playing well for us, well enough for a call-up to the National Team, but fellows on this thread want him gone.
