Moyes frustrated after goalless draw

David Moyes cut a frustrated figure after his side were held to a goalless draw by visiting Swansea at Goodison Park.

He said: "It was frustrating. We had quite a few opportunities and made some chances but it was not enough, not clear enough chances really. On another day you take one and go on to win the game.

"We had three or four good opportunities to get a goal and we weren't able to take any. They did really well against Chelsea in the cup and did well again today.

"But I can't fault my boys, we made chances but didn't get behind them enough times and get the goals.

"In the main we score the goals but it was good to get a clean sheet in the end, maybe we used all the goal chances up at Cheltenham in the cup.

"I've said to the players that it's not the end of the earth. We should have taken three points but credit to Swansea they came and defended well and got a point, what they wanted.

"We had lots of opportunities in the first half, but they made it hard to play against after that and deserve a lot of credit for what they're doing at the moment."

".....maybe we used all the goal chances up at Cheltenham in the cup." - a truly bizarre and worrying comment from the manager.

Hope he means for this game only, and not for the rest of the season. ;)

Seriously, however well you think he has done, he doesn't half come out with some guff at times.

Anichebe is not a Premier League standard striker. He just isn't. He disappeared completely in the second half. He's a classic passenger in almost every game. Why he is consistently preferred to Vellios I cannot imagine. Vellios saw more of the ball in the ten minutes he was on than Anichebe did in the previous hour.

Look on the bright side: we are almost on the magical 40 pts. I can't see us being relagated now? All-in-all we are 5/6th in the EPL, have a few key players to come back in, and we kept a clean sheet for the first time in ages. It's all good. How many of us thought we would be here in this position at the start? We really need to put on a winning run of 4-5 games back to back.

Too right, Si... Sounds like a man with no idea of how to fix the problem.

I can't understand how he can be so proactive at Newcastle and then go back to sitting on his hands again yesterday. Why did Vellios only get 8 minutes again? What doesn't Moyes like about Oviedo? What does he see in Naismith?

Still, Swansea are a decent side and it was never going to be a roll over. As I said yesterday, Liverpool will probably have spent £20m to cure their lack of creativity. We will spend nothing on ours. It simply is sickening.

I'm pretty sure Moyes was being fatalistic rather than literal with the Cheltenham comment.

Sometimes I wonder at some people on here. Moyes was being humourous, lightening the mood, making a funny.

He has got to pick his players up after yesterday's match and cannot do that unless he picks himself up first.

Swansea are a well organised side who played with 10 men constantly behind the ball. Chelsea, with all their magical midfield talent, couldn't break them down in midweek.

I despair sometimes watching the hurried passes to nowhere and could kill Neville at times; I wish Ossie could find the final ball when under pressure; I wish Jelli could find his billy boots...

But we are in the top 6, playing some half-decent stuff with a pacy winger to return and only one game a week to play.

My God — Sweeney being positive!!!

Didn't see the game but on MOTD it looks like we were by far the better team. We're a whisker away from converting these draws into wins and putting together something really special. Perhaps just a slightly out-of-sorts Jella or the return of Mirallas. Can't help worrying Europe is fundamental to retain Felli though (and maybe one or two others).

Nice run of fixtures now to put a run together, COYB!

Not as frustrated as me, Moyes Still not every side will park the bus like Swansea. Not all bad news though: our loveable neighbours have just lost their cup final... ho ho ho. A beer or two for me, I think.

Andy (#469),

Re the Hitzlsperger thread advice... I tried the darkened room treatment but it only made things worse. Seeking blood after sunset in the murky corridors of ToffeeWeb is fast becoming a habit.

Only last night I came upon the contented figure of Mr Moyes as he lay peacefully under a brand new wallet shaped duvet. A figure which turned out to be completely bloodless. It was,in fact, an android... a Model 4 stubborn type Replicant from the outer planet of the Dreamland Zone with memory implants of goals aplenty and silver trophies.

Do android managers dream of triumphant fans and elecrtic chairmen?

Peter (347) Victor is not a right midfielder were Moyes seems to alwasy play him. He is a striker and when he came off the bench to pay as a striker (i.e Newcastle twice this season) he scores. I don't know why Moyes never starts him upfront. I do think people are being harsh, as this season he's improved. I'm not saying he's Van Persie, but no one would play him right midfield would they, no striker should.

Harold (#480) — classic response! You've obviously got the same sense of humour as me, pal. Big up, mate!

Regardless, Moyes was clueless when Swansea bottled us up on our LHS. It doesn't take a nuclear scientist to work out that we were so obvious in our play that they just had to play an ace or a jack whenever they thought it was required. Jees, we are so F ing clueless at times. We had zero on the right to distract them. We are so FFF ing amateur at times.

That's frustration!

Cutting edge, cutting edge, cutting edge!!

I think the worry for me is we arn't finishing these these teams off, in a season that promises so much. We won't get many opportunities like this, I think we can comfortably be challenging for europa cup places every season but this year the champs league is there for the taking.

The teams around us are so inconsistent, where we are playing well nearly every game, creating numerous great chances in front of goal.

We seem to either make a silly mistake at the back which always costs a goal, or can't finish up front, or both! yet play fantastic! Throw in a load of shit refereeing decisions (first half dozen games) which I am still waiting to be 'evened out' and I am very frustrated.

10 draws now, and even without the blue tinted glasses we ought to have won at least 4 of those. I can't help feel that this season is slipping away, and so much at stake.

Moyes, will he sign on again? is he waiting to see where we end up, or if he's backed in the transfer market (which I don't blame him for given the last ten years).

Money, we have extra money coming from Tv deals, but we are reaching critical mass financially, champs league money, I think, will keep us only at the level we are at now. No champs league and the stars have to go, luckily Felli is worth a fortune just now and will go if we don't get 4th anyway, his cash may save us for another year but its a star a year till the cash gets sorted.

We are so close, we just lack the cutting edge, who is sat on the treatment table by the way (Mirallas), I just fear its gonna slip away.

Cutting edge, cutting edge, cutting edge...........if I say it enough we might get one!

I agree we're playing a lot better than we were 12 months ago and are a lot more consistent but the difference is last year we had a sharp goal scorer that was full of confidence and nearly everything he touched went in. This year, he's working much harder for the team but he can't get back that crucial striker touch.

Compare him to Michu and you'll see he's getting into the right areas but he's fluffing most of his shots. If he had scored half of what he missed this season we'd be pushing for 2nd I'd say but hopefully we can get Mirallas back for a good run and maybe get another striker who can help out with a few goals.

I'd like to see Vellios get more of a chance as well but looks like Victor has laid ownership to that role now.

There were media reports that Mirallas could be back for the Swansea game but he was not even on the bench. The last I heard he was going to Germany for specialist examination. Since then there has been no further news!

Why doesn't the club give us a progress report on our injured players? We just get 'return date unknown' week after week. Mirallas and Gibson are very important first team players, and so is Hibbo, so is it too much to ask for??

All this Talk about CL or Europa League, well if Swansea beat Chelsea the only Europa League place available could be for finishing 5th.

That is if one of the Top Five don't win the Cup.
