Everton vs Aston Villa

With the damp squib of the January transfer window out of the way, Everton are back to business on the pitch for the visit of struggling Aston Villa, just four days after their Midlands neighbours West Bromwich Albion left Goodison Park in defeat.

The Blues' 2 - 1 win put them squarely back in contention for a coveted Champions League qualifying spot, one point behind fourth-placed Tottenham — against whom the Baggies can do Everton a favour at the Hawthorns this weekend —and three points above erratic but improving Arsenal.

David Moyes may not have been able to add the personnel he wanted before the transfer deadline and time will tell if the Blues' squad is strong enough — or, more accurately perhaps, deep enough — but there is no question that the return to action of Darron Gibson and Kevin Mirallas on Wednesday will come as a massive boost.

Gibson's importance in a central midfield that has looked ponderous and unimaginative at times recently is hard to understate; Everton have yet to lose when he has played more than 60 minutes of the game and his assured passing and vision will be crucial down the final stretch of the campaign.

Equally as important will be the presence of Mirallas, the one player with the pace and invention to unsettle opposition defences and create chances out of more than just quick passing or a devastating through-ball. Somewhat surprisingly — but no less welcome — given that he didn't make it past the 20-minute mark at Bolton, the Belgian completed an hour against West Brom and will likely make only his 10th Premier League start for Everton this weekend.

The situation that Aston Villa find themselves in coming into this game presents an ideal opportunity for Everton to record their third win in the space of seven days but just because Paul Lambert's side are in the middle of an awful run of form does not mean this will be a formailty or even an easy encounter by any means.

Since winning on their last visit to Merseyside, a 3 - 1 win at Anfield in mid-December, Villa have been hammered 8 - 0 by Chelsea (the first result of a three-game run where they shipped 15 goals without reply) and have won just twice in 11 games in all competitions. Both of those victories came in cup competition and one of them, a 2 - 1 home win over Bradford City in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final, was ultimately in vain as they lost 4 - 3 on aggregate.

In the past week, Lambert has seen his side dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall and lose at home to Newcastle, their 20th League defeat of the season, although their second-half performance against the Magpies should serve as a warning to Everton that the fight has not gone out of Villa's players yet.

Moyes will know that the key for his side will be to get at the visitors early and hopefully get an early goal or two to crush their spirit. In terms of selection, there is talk in the press of a return to the starting XI for Nikica Jelavic but Victor Anichebe gave his manager no reason in midweek to drop him so the Croatian may have to settle for the bench.

If Gibson is deemed fit enough to start, Phil Neville would surely revert to right back, allowing Phil Jagielka to move inside to centre-half at the expense of the error-prone John Heitinga. Elsewhere in the side, few changes, if any, are expected.

With Spurs and Chelsea, the teams immediately above and below the Blues in the table, both playing away this weekend, the possibility for either or both to drop points is strong so victory for Everton is paramount ahead of next Sunday's trip to Old Trafford. More of the form on show in the first half against the Baggies — or, indeed, that which destroyed Lambert's men at Villa Park in August — and they should have too much for a Villa side in crisis.

Would fully expect us to twat these and to do so royally. No great insights there, granted, but Villa are exceptionally poor these days and we should have way too much for them. Couple of confidence-boosting goals for Jelavic wouldn't go amiss in long overdue Goodison goal fest - COYBB!

They might be going down, humiliated by lower league teams in two cup competitions but at least the manager has faith in his kids and is giving them a chance.

Graham what are you saying?

That you would rather be in Villa's position than ours?

I'm with Anthony on team selection and totally agree with you Lyndon that Johnnie has been too consistently error prone in recent games he has played.

I would give Mirallas the first half to get us ahead and then bring Jelly on for the second half.

One concern I have is for the state of the pitch and someone like Ossie who is not firm on the ball in 50/50s, however he does have a good scoring record against Villa so lets hope he's wearing the right boots on Saturday.

Come on Graham, nobody is asking for us to field a team full of kids. I'd just like to see some of the younger lads given a game now and again. It's not unreasonable and you know it.

Good overview.

I think the Gibson return is vital not only for his own contribution, but also for the fact that it removes Neville from midfield. Although Neville is often cited as being an undroppable Moyes favorite, I actually think that he's not a part of even Moyes' preferred starting XI, but he is considered second choice in both the right back and holding midfield position. He's far better suited to doing a solid job covering at right back than in midfield.

I think it's important that in some game soon we get a couple of goals up quickly and starting bossing the match with confidence. Our lack of ability to do that directly hampers the blooding of youngsters (because Moyes is always going to lean conservatively in a close game). More currently, I think the best time for Jelavic to get a scoring touch back is in a situation where the pressure is off. A two or three goal lead by the hour mark, and control of the game, would be the perfect opportunity! (...we can always hope)

We need to take advantage of any possible slip up by Spurs and Chelsea this weekend, particularly with next week seeing both those teams having very winnable home games while we travel to Old Trafford.

Moyes mentioned the pitch on Everton TV today. I got into the ground about an hour before K/O on Wednesday. The sprinklers absolutely soaked the pitch. I can understand getting it 'greasy', but this was ridiculous. The turf was bound to cut up. Really daft management from the ground staff.

Benteke looks pretty good, so we need to keep an eye on him. Other than that, Villa have no one who's worryingly good.

I agree we need to get into them and assert superiority early on - but look what happened when we got a 2-0 lead against West Brom! We put our slippers on and made a cup of cocoa.

Ideally, then, a 1-0 lead at half time, keeping us on our toes. Then two goals in the last ten minutes, leaving the last 30 seconds of the match for the players to swan around smugly and for our supporters to actually enjoy watching the game.

Their results haven't been good, we're at home, I shouldn't be in the least nervous.

Three things make me a little apprehensive though

1) I like the cut of Benteke, he seems to work hard and even in a shite side he scores goals (same as our top scorer, more than Torres etc).

2) Their new signings (Sylla, Dawkins) will be like..um...new signings. I thought we'd tonk Southampton until I heard they'd elbowed their manager. Then I thought 'Bollocks, they'll be running their plums off to impress the new feller" - and they did (don't like any new energy in our opposition - when they're down, I want them down AND out)

3) This is Everton.

Hopefully we just go at them from the start, keep it on the deck, keep possession and repeat the away performance.

That's what SHOULD happen.

Villa were awful in the first half against Toon. In the second half they were so aggressive it seemed that nothing could stop them (except a few red cards).
If they get that kind of spirit again it will be hard to contain them.
We have got a better team so there should not be any problems but what do I know.
We have drawn so many times because we could not finish the game
Villa is fighting for their ives ( in the prem that is) and it wont be easy.

Not confident about this match at all. I hope for a couple (yes we definitely need a couple) of early goals and cut out the stupid mistakes... looking at you, JH!

If we win 1 - 0 and Jelly scores then I will be well please. Any win will do considering our present form. COYB

As we all keep seeing games this season in the Prem where the form guide goes out of the window, we have to somehow do the most obvious & score more than them over the 90 minutes plus! They looked like a relegation team, Villa did in the 1st half against the convicts; the 2nd half they were full of fight & we do not want to make this game a fight, we have to try & play footy to win the game!

I would sooner have the 3 pts right now, yes we should hammer them, but — as it has been mentioned numerous times — this IS Everton... Although I actually think we have some luck going with, or for us for a change, I believe, starting at Man City I think...

But recently in reverse order, WBA hitting the bar at 2 - 1 (At 2 - 2, we could have easily bottled it after being up 2 - 0); Pienaar's goal at Bolton; Saints away, we should have been 4 or 5 goals down at the half; Swansea at home when late on in the game Michu hit the bar; Toon away with them hitting the post whilst we were down 1 - 0, followed by a few glaring misses by them; West Ham & Stoke, we had some luck with us again, whereas early in the season we were all bemoaning our bad luck with Toon (H), Reading & Fulham (A), Norwich & Arsenal (H)....

So let's hope we keep getting the rub of the green in our favour with a win... Yet again, we cannot afford a slip up, we need the 3 pts... end of... COYB!!

I think he may go for a similar approach to the West Brom game:

Howard
Neville, Jags, Distin, Baines
Gibson, Fellaini (Felli more attacking of the two)
Mirallas, Osman, Pienaar (very fluid)
Anichebe (bull in China shop time!)

Pip Jag Distin Bainzinho
Gibson Osman

Jelavic

That's the team I want. Finally all the pieces starting to come back together. I reckon we're in for a cracker. Money on 3-0 but I think we could absolutely smash them.

This site is a fair and fantastic place to share opinion but what we need to help this small but talented squad is a big wave of positivity to help us achieve what we all want — European football.

We have ultimately achieved 5th position without two key players for 50% of the games. Gibson and Mirallas are absolutely vital to the end-of-season push. Mirallas will be the key to the away games at Old Trafford, Anfield, The Emirates and Stamford Bridge when we will be soaking up pressure and hitting on the counter.

Gibson will ultimately keep Phil Neville out of centre mid given Moyes's support of Osman but we must stop the negativity and criticism of Phil Neville — the stats suggest we are a better TEAM when he plays. As for his limitations, he is a leader, a winner and he respects this club and what we stand for. I'm suggesting that Phil is more used at rb going forward but if he plays centre mid then you know he will never let us down.

We must spread a wave of support throughout Goodison for every home game; no game is a given... take Swansea at home 0 - 0... Yes but even Chelsea with their £100+ millions of attacking players could not break them down so the criticism of the team after that game was unjust given the resources we have.

The window has come and gone, we have got a good young player in, we didn't really expect any major players in before and since then we have Gibbo and Mirallas back, have a great chance to put a gap between us and 6th if we beat Villa; if Jelavic can somehow recapture some form imagine the points we will pick up....

We all love the blue boys... let's prove it. Stop wasting our energies on the board as ultimately we cannot affect that but what we can affect is those 11 men who cross the white line for us every week and deserve and need us to drive them on.

COYB.

People are underestimating the opposition, the only reason villa are down there is because they can't string together a 90 minute performance, they tend to have a very good first half and a crap second or vice versa.
That said, I would be very very disappointed if we didn't get the 3 points today, they are there to go and win and see us getting 3-1

Graham (888) - If I am pessimistic (which I don't dispute for one minute) keep the following in mind.

I almost certainly wasn't born that way, therefore my pessimism is likely to be a (normal and natural) learned response to certain repeated events.

I'll leave it to you to figure out what some of those repeated events might be.

29 Posted 02/02/2013 at 09:40:34
I don't think it will be 0-0; although Villa will see that as a good result, if they do park the bus it's up to us to get around it, so get used to it, most teams, between 14 and 16 of them, will have seen all the publicity and react accordingly...and we know that Wenger doesn't like it up him. So no knife to gun fight rubbish, 4th is not out of the question and with the wind behind us and the FSW infront nor is 3rd.

I notice everyone happy to stick Neville at RB. Ok, it gets him out of midfield, but how do you fancy him against N'Zogbia and Agbonglahor? He will be absolutely ripped to shreds. Then again, I don't fancy Heitinga against Benteke either.

The rest of the team picks itself really. Lets get right behind Anichebe guys, he's a different player when the crowd are behind him.

Fingers crossed their new signing play like... new signings... in a bad way. (Respect to Eugene @ 857.)

Like: "Where am I? Who am I playing for today? Who am I? Why am I playing so badly? Why are my team mates all teenagers? Why are the blue-clad opposition so imperious in possession and deadly in front of goal? Is there any chance I can cancel this marriage of convenience on the basis of non-consummation?" That sort of thing.

Eugene,
Fair call but I learnt Latin and it was fuck all use to me. Had to laugh when I read some opinions and quotes about optimism. Basically there are two schools of thought, the optimists think it is a good thing and the pessimists don't.

We should win today, if we don't it is not the end of our CL aspirations but it would be a big dent as we still have to play away from home the four sides around us in the league table. They will probably be the games that decide our final position

Mark Press
36 Posted 02/02/2013 at 10:26:23
Maybe Phil, but apart from the Norwich game which comes after OT every game looks difficult.

I took into consideration the fact that we have already lost to Reading once this season (so the onus is on us to win the return fixture), and also the idea that when we meet Fulham at the end of April, they will possibly be fighting relegation.

Sam Hoare
37 Posted 02/02/2013 at 10:28:54
Not many games in the Premier League are a gimme and I don't think this one will be. Villa are fighting for their lives and are certainly capable of scoring goals with Benteke, Agbonlahor back and N'zogbia beginning to look again like the player we all quite wanted to sign before he went to Villa.

If our boys play to their best we should take it but if they're complacent it could well be like the first half vs Southampton.

John Crawley
38 Posted 02/02/2013 at 10:26:00
Phil I share your concerns about Neville at right back. He wasn't the quickest anyway but I think he's lost a little bit of pace. I don't mind Neville in midfield I think he has played pretty well there over the season, it just depends on who else is in there with him. Problem is with Coleman/Hibbert both out none of the choices are great at right back.

If you play Jags at right back then it takes something out of the middle and Heitinga's form this season has been very poor. On balance I'd go with Neville at right back and keeps Jags/Distin together.

Gavin Ramejkis
39 Posted 02/02/2013 at 10:31:29
As long as Moyes doesn't revert to type and go all touchy feely play it safe; two goals and sit back and defend. The other night at two up against West Brom Everton only needed one more goal to go ahead of Spurs on goal difference. A game against a poor failing team like Villa should be the ideal opportunity to bury them with a handsome score line, does Moyes have the balls for it?

He should have the option to push on and even go two up top later in the game pairing Anichebe with Jelavic to bolster both their egos, I agree with Anthony's starting eleven then kick on and a crushing victory rather than switching off with a one or two goal lead, Villa are woeful defending set pieces in their own area.

Brian Harrison

Form would suggest an easy home win for the blues, but I worry more when we are playing a team in the bottom 6. The crowd never seems to be up for games against teams everybody thinks we should beat, then add in the negativity that seems to be engulfing our fans over not getting any of our targets in the transfer window. So lets hope we can put all these thoughts to one side and get behind the team and they respond with a convincing win.

Well Neville actually found himself in a RB position against West Brom. He backed off and backed off and allowed their lad get from the touch line to the edge of our 6 yard box.

I take your point though, I probably am being harsh. I also can't tolerate those aimless bloody clips down the line that he does EVERY time he gets the ball at RB.

#828 - Anthony - I'd go with that team selection as well.

On paper we should be looking at 4 or 5 goals today.
However, I think Villa will be tough to break down as they'll come for a draw.

Villa were crap first half against Newcastle but rallied with a change in formation to 4 at the back second half. They've also signed some French defender in the transfer window and he's allegedly built like a brick shit house.

Hopefully, a clean sheet for Tim Howard with Mirrallas and Anichebe on the scoresheet for us.

Come on Blue Boys.

That's the one I thought of, although if I remember the game, it was a bit of a travesty of a result. We should have been 5-0 up at half time, two cast iron penalties not given. We didn't exactly 'lie back'
My point being it isn't 'every time', it isn't 'always end bad teams runs' in fact it has happened once in the last year therefore pretty rare I would say.
But hey who am I to stop people managing their own expectations!

Well everyone seems more or less in accord with team selection, which in my opinion speaks for itself, the only difficult decision being who plays up front, Jelly or Vic? Vic when played up front this season looks a totally different prospect than previously and even scored a few goals ealier on. Jelly has worked had in my opinion but his finishing abaility seems to have deserted him entirely and his confidence looks shot. While Vic had a good game and worked hard against WBA he didn't score and my view was his performance in that game was the same as Jelly's performances this season, hard work but not enough goals. Maybe now that we are getting nearer our stronged team available and perhaps more creativity again maybe Jelly will refind his form. Personally I find it hard to decide which one I would play out of the two. Forced to decide I think I would start with Jelly and see how it goes to half time.
Denis Richardson

Pretty much a full squad, playing at home against a team dropping like a stone and low on confidence. This really should be 3 points, no disrespect to villa.

No place for complacency but I would expect a win by a couple of goals here. Am going to go against the grain and say we should start with Jelavic up front. He had a break in the last game and hopefully will be able to regain his shooting boots against one of the worst teams (on current form) in the league.

With Gibson and Mirralas back, we should hhave more control in the middle and Mirralas will provide Jelavic iwth help up top. Anicheb may be playing better but he is no where the striker that Jelavic (on form) is. Really need Jelavic back on form ASAP after the pathetic transfer window.

Graham, James is right, no matter how good/well Everton are playing you can guarantee that most times in games where we are playing a team in a desperate situation where on paper we should win comfortably we manage to blow it. Similarly you can also guarantee that if we are playing a team whose striker hasn't scored for 20 or 30 games, he is almost cetainly guaranteed a goal against us. I know this isn't the case every time but it is the case more often than not. I imagine that perhaps suporters of other teams may be able to make similar cases regarding their teams. However after supporting The Blues for over 50yrs and watching them for over 40yrs it seems to me that this happens to us on a regular basis far more than other teams. I did send a post prior to the WBA game that I thought we would beat them but could easily see us losing or drawing with Villa. I certainly hope this is not the case today and we go out and put in a strong performance and score a few goals. COYB.

Brian...# 022

"Reading" - thats your best shot out of the 24 games the blues have played this season.

Did you go? Because Reading did not roll Everton. Everton took the lead, missed two sitters should have had a penalty and then came out in the 2nd half looking to carry on. Reading got a corner, Coleman lost his marker and their boy scored. We continued looking for the winner with something like 28 to 30 shots at goal. They got a penatly on their 3rd (repeat 3rd) attack at our goal and basically nicked the gamed.

So, there you have it, Reading did not roll Everton. Neville did not even play so how he gets shite for not even turning up probably sums up this thread.

No team has rolled Everton this season, not one. With or without Neville, with or without Nai-fucking-smith. I will say that Chelsea gave us a slap for not putting them to bed after we dominated the first half, but then again thats what you get from the European Champions.

If you want slag off the blues, go to a game, form an opinion and then let rip but don't pull a team, out of the bag of three teams that have beat Everton, and hope you get lucky.

Bill,

I understand the sentiment, that feeling you should really be beating a time is accompanied by the little voice in the back of your head saying ' we going to fuck it up, just watch'. That's being a football fan. However the facts just don't back up your pessimism.

Goodison has been a difficult place for teams to come to for a long time now and most come away with nothing. The last year in all competitions is P21 W13 D6 L2. The two by the way were Arsenal and Chelsea in extra time. So keep the faith, the odds say you will be celebrating three points tonight..........., but then again!!

Villa = Bogey Team. Haven't beaten them at Goodison since 2006. Today's the day?
