It’s just about getting through...

Leighton Baines has been talking to the local press ahead of this weekend's big FA Cup tie against Oldham.

“We saw what a tough game that they gave to Liverpool in the last round.

"We played them ourselves a few seasons back and they beat us, so we know what those Cup ties are all about.

“It's just about getting through. Liverpool will have been aware of what they were in for as well.

“You know you're going to be playing in difficult conditions and sometimes things don't go for you, but we've just got to go there and be professional.

“You've got to make the right decisions and not get caught up in the different style of play which they'll try and force on the game.

“We need to play our own game and if we can get the first goal then that can make a big difference.”

Apparently their big lump centre forward is pretty doubtful and their pacy right back who scored vs RS has finished his loan. Plus obviously the have sold Dickov.

All in all some good portents but the players need to turn up and get the job done. I would make very minimal changes if at all. I expect physicality will be a part of it so perhaps something like:

Howard
Neville Jags Distin Baines
Anichebe Gibson Fellaini Pienaar
Mirallas
Jelavic

The big centre forward I believe has been passed fit, Sam.

This will deffo be a physical game – and quite right! The pitch is shite, not much chance of playing any footy on the deck and believe me they will go straight for the jugular.

I think your team will be not far off.

There's no way Davey Moyes will drop Osman for this match. It's these minnow crappy teams Osman usually has a half-decent game against. He can't compete in the Premier League versus the top guys so Moyes will want his favourite little waster playing for sure. The only game since October Osman has shown up for was the Cheltenham one. Just about sums up Moyes and his bezzie mate.

It should be comfortable but as it's Everton it won't be!
Be happy with a draw haha

I don't think Dickov went for a fee, Sam.

If the team is tired, then as I posted on another thread I'd happily play...

Howard
Stones Duffy Heitinga Oviedo
Gibson Hitzlsperger
Naismith Barkley Mirallas
Jelavic

There is no increase of risk with that line up. The outfield come under three categories – desire to impress, regain fitness, regain first team spot... and in Heitinga's case recapture reputation. They'll be more motivated and physically able than tired legs.

Nick - if that tall centre forward is fit he'll destroy Heitinga. He can watch the game on the box like the rest of us.

Not Duffy though...

And my knowledge of all things football is brilliant. I've just won my second bet in a row - and both have been on Liverpool to lose! Go Zenit!

"if they play Heitinga we're in with a shout." — that's from an Oldham forum I was just looking at (http://www.owtb.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=41363).

We know; they know — the question is: does Mr Moyes know Heitinga has lost his footballing mojo?

That's debatable after that mourinho scribe... Liquid lunches and gambling, it's down hill from here nick.

You say that Ian but I just had an in-play bet on Genk to force an equaliser against Stuttgart, and on 91 minutes they did. What really are the odds on Mourinho... hmmmm...

Kev (340) - Is that from the Oldham manager, a player, or just someone like us?

Nick I wouldnt let Heitinga anywhere near the first team on the basis of the last 3 games where IMO he has cost us 6 goals.

Plus they will be lumping balls forward and we know he has no pace.

Their pitch will not suit a short passing game so I would play Jelly and big vic up front and pack our MF with Felli Oviedo Pienaar and Gibbo.

Ossie needs to sit this one out and if Stones is eligible I would also give Pip a rest.

If we're not 3 up with 30 minutes to go bring Mirallas on to use his pace against tired defenders.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Johnny H will be moved to midfield for this fixture to bulk up on physicality. Will Moyes be inclined to start Stones at RB? Probably not but he is well experienced at this level, used to playing on imperfect pitches and has the height to deal with crosses. In that case the likely team would be:

Howard
Stones, Jags, Distin, Baines
Mirallas, Gibson, Johnny H, Piennar
Felli
Jelly

Mick #367, move JH to midfield to "bulk up on physicality"?? Sorry mate but I think on the basis of the last few games he's been involved in, it would render the opposite effect!

I thought Stones was cup-tied ??

Anyway, it would be nice to see Duffy or Barkley play but keep as near as the same squad against Man Utd.

Two changes: Oviedo for Pienaar, and Distin for Johnny. JH is a class player but has been warming the bench. He needs a run of 5-6 games to get match fitness and then he will he our hero again. It was good to see Jags giving him cover but it's a team game and when a man is down they should be all covering him just in case. It's all down to form and confidence. FFS he was our Player of the Year — have we conveniently forgotten that?

Woops a big hole in my post, Stones is cup-tied. What I suppose I'm saying is that Johnny has a strong physicality relative to Ossie and Pienaar. Hitz is another midfield option for height and strength and give Ossie a rest. We will be brought down to their level and this game will be a physical battle no doubt on an inferior pitch no matter what way we try to out play them. They bullied Liverpool for most of the game and that is what they will try to do to us. We need to be up for the physical battle to win the game, and show our superior fitness as we cant rely solely on our better ball-playing ability.

Howard
Neville Duffy Jag Ovideo
Gibson Fellaini Hitz
Barkley
Jelavic Mirallas
