McManaman wants Everton in next round

Callum McManaman is desperate Everton beat Oldham to land Wigan an FA Cup quarter-final against his old club at Goodison Park next month.

McManaman, 21 — a distant relative of another former young Blue (turned red), Steve McManaman — began his career at Everton before joining the Latics at 16 and would love to return to Goodison Park, even though Oldham might be easier oppsition for Roberto Martinez's men.

“Personally, I hope it's Everton,” said the England Under-20 winger, who was the star of Wigan's fifth-round win over Huddersfield. “When I saw the draw I was made up. I'm really happy with it.

“We're only one game away from a Wembley semi-final and a couple away from going the whole way.

“You never know what might happen. It would be great if the club could reach the Final for the first time and hopefully we can do it.”

Wigan have won three straight away games in the FA Cup this season.

Absolutely great lad by all accounts. He went into the Holt pub in Whiston (where he's from) with his Dad to open his MOTM champagne bottle from the Wigan game on Sunday night. I was in there last night and the bottle's being kept behind the bar I believe! Proper down to Earth bluenose.

Apparently though he gets really nervous before the games he starts in so Martinez had to tell him he wasn't playing just so he'd be able to sleep the night before. He only found out he was actually playing 20 minutes before kick off. Still a big blue who tries to get to Goodison when he can.

Best of luck to the lad.

Didn't know he was a blue he stood out a mile in Wigan's last game - another one got away I'd suggest.

What is it about our youth system?

Nick - Baines jags Barton who are playing at a high level now, then there's people like Ruddy who went when older

Baines and Jags only trained with the club among many others at an age much younger than McMananana.., on his release, and Ruddy was hardly a slip through the net.

I'll give you Johan Barton, though.

I'm not sure we lose that many youth players tht actually go on to better things.
Bound to lose some, as every club does e.g. livpl-tom ince

He was actually at Everton at the same time as Rodwell. He was told that he was the most technically gifted player at his age but was let go because he was too small. Obviously a pacy skilfull winger wasn't what we wanted. Saw him play for Blackpool on loan and he stood out then. Best of luck to him for the future but not for the cup game (providing we get through against Oldham!)

Everytime I see this lad play for Wigan in cup games, he is always the stand-out player. I am amazed he never gets more playing time in the Premier League.

I'm pretty sure the average age of our first team must be the oldest in the league. I think it's one of Moyes's biggest flaws that he never tends to give the younger lads more playing time.

We'll need Hibbert or Coleman to mark this little rocket.

Noel. Early in his career Moyes would give the younger players a chance but they would have to be pretty special to be called upon today. This came across quite clearly in a recent Sky football show when he repeatedly emphasized the importance of experience. It frustrates us all but it's the only method he trusts. Look at young Duffy in the Oldham match when he was sent on in the last few minutes with the specific job of marking their big lad Smith, and his failure to do so made Moyes look stupid. It wasn't even a hard job. No need to try to out-jump him or do anything fancy or clever. All he had to do was block his run but he wasn't up to it and Moyes will be kicking himself for trusting someone who lacked experience.

Bayern Munich don't lack experience. What a machine. Knowledge, confidence, skill, physical strength and real pace all over the pitch. Wish we had a few of those attributes.

He looked good in the cup game. Wigan should play him against Stoke in the PL when Crouch is playing. That's the long and the short of it!

Ex-Evertonians worry me. I always expect them to score the winning goal against us. I wish, once in a while, they would do us a favour by scoring a decisive last-minute own goal! Hold on, let's play out that scenario...

Everton 2 (Gibson, Baxter [og]) v Oldham 1 (Smith)

Everton 3 (Anichebe, Baines [pen], McManaman [og] v Wigan 2 (Kone, Di Santo)

Everton 2 (Mirallas, Rodwell [og]) v Man City 1 (Aguero)

Everton 1 (Rooney [og])) v Man Utd 0

Ah yes, happiness is a warm "Everton 2013 FA Cup Winners" souvenir scarf. Order early to avoid disappointment.

Kevin @956 - If only it was so simple ! I wonder what odds you'd get on that particular set of results happening with OG's from all those boyhood blues !

By the way I know Rodwell was born up the road in Southport and came up through our youth ranks but I've never read anywhere that he was of the blue persuasion, but i'll take your word for it he was and still is a blue !

Harold #918, you're right about Duffy, of course; but in my opinion what was wrong was that when he came on it should have been Distin or Jags who marked Smith/blocked his run, with Duffy filling in for D or J.

Craig - put it this way. I won't be popping down to the bookies any time soon!

I was counting as an ex-Evertonian anyone who has played for us, even at youth level like McManaman, so Rodwell has to qualify. It's a pity Newcastle are out of the cup, as a Gosling own goal would cause a merry riot among the likes of us.

The scarves are available free from www.kevjohnson.co.uk. Just quote the reference code "TWBLUE". Please note, to cut down on costs at this end I have made them invisible.

(PS: It's not Kevin, it's Kevan.)

Fucking hell, he's had one game against a shit Huddersfield side and all of a sudden he's the next Messi. Hands up all those who would've mentioned him if he hadn't of played on Sunday and we'd have then drawn Wigan. Yep, thought not. Now I'm sure he is a cracking lad and a great Blue and all that. But I can't really remember his name being mentioned too many times before.

Nobody said he was Messi mate. Just pointing out he's a blue is the jist of the OP.

Anyone remember JP Kissock? He was supposed to be brilliant, quite often though these players can be world beaters in the reserves but the step up to the Prem is too big a jump. Phil Jevons? He was prolific in the reserves.

Liverpool have got a lad up front now in the reserves banging them in left right and centre and he doesn't get a sniff of the first team.

If Duffy was sent on to specifically mark Smith, why was he not sent on at the same time as him?? Or was moyes half asleep to notice Smith going on as a sub?
