Moyes wants more from Mirallas

, 22 February, 42comments  |  Jump to most recent
David Moyes has urged Kevin Mirallas to recapture his impressive early-season form and score more goals to help Everton realise their European ambitions this season.

The Belgian has had a stop-start first season with the Blues, one significantly interrupted by hamstring problems that kept him sidelined for much of the middle part of the campaign.

The Belgian international is back playing regularly again now but his manager feels he has a way to go before he is back to his best and has challenged him to create and score more goals.

"I don't think he is firing on all cylinders," Moyes says. "I think he's not returned the way I would like him yet, and he's still getting used to the Premier League.

"He's got to create more goals and score more goals, and that's what I'm waiting for him to do. He knows that, I've told him that and we're hoping for more.

"I think his form at the start of the season was excellent. We saw what he was capable of. I don't think we've really had that of him since he's come back from his injury yet."

Well Dave, it's pretty fucking hard for the lad to be the sole attacking threat from the right hand side every game.

It's no coincidence that he was better with Coleman. At least he can pass forward and overlap to give Mirallas options. God I hope he's fit for tomorrow. Even half fit!

Oh, Phil, please tell me you're kidding. Mirallas is a class player, a true talent who is struggling to regain his form after injury. Coleman is a bumblebee who was third choice RB behind Hibbert and Neville, and whose lack of productivity at right mid was a big reason Moyes brought in Mirallas in the first place.

Saying Mirallas was better because of Coleman is like saying your steak was better because of the mashed potatoes.

Why not play Mirallas and Fellaini up-front? We could do with the height and the pace. Hopefully, with Coleman back, that will give us an attacking avenue on the right too.

How else will we get to see Mirallas get the goals that seemed to flow so easily in Greece? This may be the option that gets the best out of both of them.

While I am at it, a midfield of Oviedo, Gibson, Pienaar and Osman, with Baines and Coleman attacking down the flanks... As Delia once said "Let's be 'avin' you!!"

Fuck, gaffer, these sort of comments should be left between you and the player and anyone else who needs to know inside the club. Keep it within the club, behind closed door knobs. What is to be gained by airing these thoughts in public? Does it help him, you, the club? Big fucking No on that one.

Are these kindly and most timely words supposed to make you look decisive, incisive, on the ball, concerned, knowledgeable, sympathetic, empathetic, nurturing? Leave it on the training ground next time, Moyes, there's nothing you say in your cuddly warm words that is blind bleedingly obvious and has been said over and over again on these boards and the live forum.

So, you didn't need to open your mouth on this one you silly twit. Again, what is supposed to be the function of doing your dirty washing in public?

Mike, by Coleman getting forward and overlapping at every oppertunity it gives Mirallas more space to cut in which makes him more effective. Therefore Coleman makes Mirallas a better player. Have you not been watching Neville recently?

I hate it when they use the line "still getting used to the Premier League" — he is a professional footballer playing at the top of his game for Club and Country... What exactly is he getting used to??? It's not like we are asking him to play basketball on Saturdays.

The whole team has been below par since New Year, to be fair. If we can't beat Norwich tomorrow then we can forgot 4th place!

Ian, Mirallas was brilliant early in the season with HIbbo behind him, too. I think Mirallas is off-step for several reasons. I don't think Coleman is one of them.

Kevin Mirallas is a top player and Moyes is right: he hasn't captured his early season form. I see nothing wrong in a manager saying, "You are a special talent and we now need you to produce your early season form to help us challenge for fourth place." I think Mirallas should take it as a compliment that the boss rates him so highly.

Mind seems no matter what Moyes does the MOB oppose everything he does. Makes you wonder how such an inept manager could get a side regularly into the top 6. Something that neither Rodgers nor Martinez has managed — who many TW posters would have as our next manager.

Don't see any issue in challenging a player to do more, especially one with this lads talents and as Brian says above, he should take it as a compliment.

Any idiot can see he's not contributing to the same level that he was at the begining of the season and it's up to him to get that form back.

I think Moyes could level such comments against the majority of the team personally.
Most have under-performed since the first few months of the season.
I said we would finish 6th or 7th at the start of the season and I reckon that might be how it pans out now.
If we can win the FA Cup though I won't be bothered!!

Mirallas is certainly talented. My worry about him has always been whether or not he can shoot. His attempts so far look quite weak to me.

Mirallas is by far our best player. He makes things look effortless. It also highlights how much dross we have in the side as most can't play at his speed. Neville is awkward and out of place whenever in the opposition half so if KM is on the right then it's not an ideal pairing. Now if only we had a right rooted baines clone. I've no worries over Mirallas he will show his class again when fully fit.

I clearly stated that Mirallas was better when he played WITH Coleman. Not that Coleman is a right winger or that he should displace Mirallas.

Coleman is a right back and he showed signs that he can become an accomplished player there. His forward runs allowed Mirallas to come inside or give it outside to Coleman. When Mirallas plays with Neville he either takes players on, one-on-one, or is forced to pass it back to Neville...who in turn plays it back to whoever is behind him.

Hibbo is probably 1st choice RB, but I didn't see the point in discussing him when he's seemingly injured long term.

I have no problem with what Moyes said, what I did find strange is who he decided to say it about. At least Mirallas is just a few games back from injury, what have Pienaar and Osman done lately to escape criticism?

If you want to attack and create chances from the right and watch exiting football, then you play Coleman and Mirallas. Anyone can see that.

Moyes must surely know that Finch Farm is the place for this stuff and I can only assume it was a deliberate ploy. The man to man chats have obviously made little difference and perhaps DM is hoping this public airing will do the trick. All the hogwash about getting used to the Premier League and recovering from injury is camouflage for what is really going on. The lad is just not putting it in.

I know the permanent gloves don't help but there have been moments when he has actually looked quite chicken. We all know how positive and dynamic he can be but something between his ears is causing him to lose focus and falter. Will the real Kevin Mirallas please come back.

Mirallas is a striker and was signed as a striker after scoring 20 goals in Greece last season. he had never played on the wing till he came to us. The first four or so league games he came off the bench and played alongside Jelly. This was our best spell.

When it was obvious he had to play from the start, Moyes stuck him on the wing so he could stick to his one -up-front policy. He has lost form because he is yet another player being played out of position.

He's not a good crosser of the ball and is far more comfortable through the middle. He has not scored a goal from the wing. His only goal (I think) was in September when he came on as sub and played centre.

He was a winger when he joined Olympiacos. He scored 20 goals in a very poor league.

He's a good player, and I'll trust Moyes to find his best position.

He said in an interview in the Echo he had never played on the wing before. He must have meant at senior level. He can't cross the ball at pace.

I agree with the above he should be given a chance up front. Can't do any worst than Jelavic at the moment so whats to lose

Mike Gaynes #415 “Saying Mirallas was better because of Coleman is like saying your steak was better because of the mashed potatoes”.

Drawing analogies between players and food types (mirallas and steak, Coleman and potatoes), what would be your analogies for other players?

Heitinga – Gruyere cheese – full of holes.
Distin – mustard.
Baines – ?
Jelavic – blancmange.
Naismith – neeps, turnip.
Pienaar – obvious, that one!
Anichebe – and we’ve already got a certain fish for him.
Fellaini – dogs bollocks (never tasted them? You should try – but only once they’ve been cut off).
Howard – one-legged kangaroo steak; or American pate (play on words, that one).
Jags – ?
Velios – ?
Osman – lion (Spanish link here) steak; petit pois.
Neville – fudge.

Mirallas is still shit, and has a lot to learn before he can be called a good player, but yes, he has some talent that can be developed.

He need to upgrade his vision for the game, and he need to learn how to cross properly, and most of all he need to become a team player. I must admit I saw the potential in him when he had Coleman behind him on the right side, Everton seemed like a balanced team with attack down both flanks.

Paul (#423). Spot on. I think it comes down to man and "team" management skills. Not many PL managers have this. They can pass "coaching" exams but they have NFI when it comes to people skills. It's the same the whole world over.......... etc.

I agree, he needs to upgrade his vision to the latest UV-3000 Opti-focus package. The model he uses at the moment doesn't even have a laser sight mode for gods sake!

I've never understood the hero worship of Mirallas by some. Sure he's had a couple of decent games, but In general when he's not been injured he's failed to deliver. He's not scored anything like enough goals and on many occasions chooses the wrong option i.e. is greedy.

He obviously is very talented and confident, possibly over-confident at times which I think is why Moyes has deliberately come out in public with his comments as he thinks Mirallas can handle it (whereas some players might not) and he will hopefully respond.

You have to manage different players in different ways, some need an arm around the shoulder, others a kick up he arse, I suspect Mirallas is the later type of character.

Moyes has made a similar statement in this morning's Guardian about Jelavic. Along the lines of "If Jelavic starts scoring again we could have a great end on season; if he doesn`t we could struggle." No pressure there then.

Play Mirallas behind a forward, give him license to go where he wants. Then you will see the best of him. Balance that by playing Fellaini deeper in midfield – his preferred position by the way.

I rate Mirallas very highly, two great feet, a great shot and one of very few players that will take a defender on and get around him (conspicuously missing at Everton). Since that buck-toothed cunt did his trademark Achilles stamp on him, which he does in virtually every game and gets away with it, Mirallas is worried about pulling up with another injury. Give the guy a break and support.

I thought this was just a kick up the arse but seeing Mirallas on the bench today must mean Moyes was being serious. Mirallas hasn't been playing well since he came back from injury but i'm disgusted that Pienaar has played every second for months despite being shite and I don't remember Moyes having a bad word to say about him and a few others who have been shit.

Brent Stephens, I would have put Baines as the vegemite/marmite sandwich.
Vellios is a hot dog and Jags is bread-and-butter pudding.

Moyes is zucchini. Leaves a foul taste.
