Contract distraction? Rubbish, says Moyes

, BBC Sport , 22 February, 14comments  |  Jump to most recent
David Moyes has rejected claims that uncertainty about his future is affecting the team after one win in five Premier League matches.

"I think that's rubbish," he said. "We're still realistically playing for a place in the Champions League."

"Most seasons we've tended to finish sixth, seventh or eighth and if you ask the people who know football they would say that's about as good as Everton can do," said Moyes.

"We've probably been playing at our maximum for a long time at Everton — foot hard to the pedal — and I'm hoping we can go a wee bit further this season and maybe do better in the FA Cup."

If you know football it's the best we can do under Moyes. He says it himself.
This is us at our maximum. Expect nothing more save a wee hope we can win the FA Cup.
Realism from the man.

It annoys me that Moyes seems to think he holds all the cards. January proved that he doesn't. He will see how we do before signing or not? Fuck off, let's see how you do, Davey, before Everton Football Club decide to offer you a contract or not.

Having the team look shit scared every time we go a goal up is embarrassing. We have results like yesterday every season, and he uses the tiredness excuse, or the no money excuse. He knows we have no cash and he knows we need fresh legs, so does he shuffle his pack?

Does he sell Fellaini and get Fer and Negredo? Does he balls, he digs his heels in to keep the players that he admits are tired, and wonders why the team continue to look stale and bereft of new ideas.

In his own words, this is why he shits his kecks every time we turn up at Anfield or Old Trafford.

The man has an in-built inferiority complex, and it all filters down to the players.

A winner? Don't make me laugh.

He's just not a winner. He makes a mess of the Carling every year. It's not took Laudrop long.

A manager who's contract finishes at the end of the season, and who publicly states he might not sign another, thinks this isn't a distraction! It beggars belief!!! You're lucky to be manager of this great club.

Remember this club stuck by you when your team recorded the lowest points total ever and lowest goals scored in a season. Maybe the next club you manage will not be so patient and loyal.

Time to go, Moyes. If you won't show your dedication to the club by signing a new contract, why should any of the players? Maybe we signed no-one in the window cos no-one wants to play for a manager that sees his future at a different club.

Hung by his own words is half a season Davey. The only way he can get results is by having his players going flat out. That's why we usually have a poor preseason. It takes time to get them up to speed. Even when the season starts, it takes time to build up the momentum. This time somehow he has managed to get them there at the start of the season but all to no avail, they have simply run out of steam. The reason we do so poorly against lower league opposition is that the players think they don't have to work so had against them. They relax slightly and that's enough to bring us down to their level. It's not rocket science, it's happened too often.

Davey boy is a one trick poney. It will be very interesting to see how he get on at a club where lack of money will be no reason for failure. Maybe he is the only type of manager that is suitable for a club with Evertons lack of resorces. Maybe I will regret thinking this way but I've had enough of this. It's boring Davey. Lets see how good you really are. Lets see you take a chance. You've never been a chancer while at Everton, far from it, go to another club. You have the safest job in football, lets see you take a gamble for once. I'm ready, are you?

Sell players just because they are tired?! (And you gave no other reason for selling). And wasn't Felli suspended part of January, so was getting over his "tiredness"?

Sounds a bit like "my car was dirty so I changed it"!

Brent, you read my post wrong. I wasnt saying change for the sake of change, nor do I have a problem with Fellaini, or him being tired. The point I was trying to make was ideas, and if Moyes has any. He knows we have no money and the team is running out of steam, so what does he do? To me, he does nothing, then moans. The Fellaini example was just an idea that could have crossed the managers mind, but I doubt it did. He could have freshened up the squad the same as he had done with the Bily money, or the Rodwell money, but this time he chose not to even though he and everyone else could see the team needed freshening up, and he had playing assets that he could cash in. The board having no money did cost us, but that has been the same for years, but our £4 million a year manager did nothing.

I have absolutely no doubt that he is going - even if he has to keep Adrian Chiles company for the first few months of the new season before the job in deutschland comes up. Thank god we are on 42 points as I can't see us getting many more points this season and think we will be lucky to finish in the top 8. I have respected DM throughout his tenure but he has got to realise that his situation will cascade through the team and ultimately will influence whether we play with confidence or not. I think we will win tomorrow night but will get done by Wigan in the next round despite being at home. Hopeful replacement Solskjaer, nightmare replacement Allardyce !!

Not a prayer another club would give him 10 seasons or more. The fans wouldn't put with it. Some Everton fans think we should be grateful we've got him. We are if you like watching one-dimensional, one-paced football.

"I think that's rubbish," he said. "We're still realistically playing for a place in the Champions League."

a) didn't the '08 contract saga course the team's form to dip? Didn't spurs de-rail last seaon when 'arry um'd, and ah'd about the england job? How can you motivate players if you're not sure if you're going to stay? How the f'ck do you attract new players if you don't know if you're staying? It's obviously affecting the players and the whole backroom staff (many of whom will loose their jobs with a change of manager)!

b) Mathematically still being able to get a CL place is not the same as 'realistically playing for a CL place'. If spurs win tonight, we'll be 9 points behind 4th spot and remain 5 points behind 5th with 11 games left. We will likely get no more than 2-3 points from the 5 tough away games we have so 'realistically' 4th is a pipe dream. (I don''t think we ever really had a chance over the season anyway). If we're really lucky we might hang on to 6th, which should be good enough for Europa (am not getting carried away by the cup just yet....).
